Universal Design for LearningAs stated in your prior reading, for the purposes of thisprogram, we will maintain a broad vision that can guide yourplanning butn then progress to a more focused look at yourspecific course and teaching praxis. We began by looking atnational standards and guidelines for distance learning andnow turn our attention to guidelines for supporting studentlearning and success - these guidelines can apply to face toface, hybrid, and purely online learning.

These principles can be so effective when applied diligentlythat I encourage you to revisit them periodically throughoutyour career, to share them with colleagues in the field, and toapply them to your teaching to the fullest extent possible.

The premiere resource in the field of Universal Design forLearning is the Center for Applied Special Technology(CAST). CAST is a nonprofit research and development organization that works to expand learning opportunities for allindividuals, especially those with disabilities, through Universal Design for Learning. CAST has earned international recognitionfor its innovative contributions to educational products, classroom practices, and policies. Its staff includes specialists in educationresearch and policy, neuropsychology, clinical/school psychology, technology, engineering, curriculum development, professionaldevelopment, and more.

While there are a few excellent printed texts on Universal Design for Learning, we have found CAST's documents to be muchmore practical than theoretical and easier to implement as they provide quick tips, samples, and material that has been usedsuccessfully by others.
