RECOGNIZING OUR DONORS To be recognized as a leadership giver, a donor must direct his or her gift to United Way’s Community Investment Fund or one of our current funded partners.

We go to great lengths to make sure each and every member of the Tocqueville Society, Peaks Society, Women’s Leadership Council and Highlands Circle, as well as all Diamond Donors and companies are recognized in our annual Leaders In Giving book.

Some donations, however, aren’t received in time to make it into the book. To make sure we show our appreciation to everyone, donors whose gifts are received after March 31 will be listed in next year’s recognition book.

* Indicates deceased throughout this book.

If you find any mistakes, or have updates as to how your name should be listed, please contact Elizabeth Allen, Leadership Giving Manager at 239-1048.

Dr. Leon Elliston2015-2016 BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHAIR

I want to make the world a better place and I love to be surrounded by people that want to do the same. Is that so much to ask?

I’m Leon Elliston and I’m serving as board chair of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. While we may not be able to change the whole world, we do have a big impact on the lives of those who live and work here in Buncombe County.

I hope you will take some time to review this book in its entirety. Among the names of your fellow Leadership Givers you will find stories about how your donations and your time continue to strengthen our community.

CONCENTRATING OUR IMPACT I have been a leadership giver since 1986. I’ve seen first-hand how, through United Way, we enable our neighbors to become better educated, financially stable and healthy. But this past year, during the creation of our new three-year strategic plan, we asked ourselves the question:

What can United Way do to be even more impactful? We made a key decision to elevate our Middle School Success Initiative. What does that look like? A better description can be found on the following page but the short version is this:

It is critical to every child that they achieve a high school diploma and have a plan for their life. Research tells us that if they do graduate, they will have better job opportunities, better health, more stable families and healthier children. Middle school is a critical period in that journey and is often referred to by educators as the “last, best time” to reach students. Middle school is the tipping point and as we conducted our own community assessments, we saw there was a marked lack of support for middle school youth.

In our community, children who live in poverty graduate from high school at an average rate of 77% while their classmates graduate at a rate of 90%. These

numbers have improved greatly in the last few years, but a clear disparity still exists. At the same time there are more than 700 children who are homeless in Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools. Every one of these children is trying to navigate an uncertain home life AND their homework.

Supporting kids so they do well in school is clearly important but just as critical is making sure their whole family and neighborhood is strong. That’s why United Way is working with others to wrap support for them all at three pilot middle schools - Enka, Erwin and Asheville, by 2017.

We already have three years of work under our belt at Enka Middle and are thrilled about what is beginning to unfold. As we move forward, United Way will do what we do best - gather resources, align support and serve as an organizer so that our nonprofits and schools can do what they do best - help our students, families and

cherished community succeed.

WILL YOU HELP US TELL OTHERS?I want to thank you for saying yes to our call to action. Whether you’ve been saying yes for the past forty years, or are new to United Way, you are all important to our story.

I have a request. We need YOU, our Givers, Advocates and Volunteers to help extend this invitation to others. Be it your family, your friends, co-workers, Facebook or Twitter following, we hope you will help us spread the word and ask others to join us.

It’s easy to extend this invitation. Just share your story about why you give, why you volunteer and why you choose United Way, and then connect them to us.

Thank you again for your continued generosity. Thank you for Living United!

I am proud that our board and staff created a major strategic plan in 2014/15. We adopted a new role that elevates our Middle School Success Initiative: organizing nonprofit and community support for students, families and neighbors, and helping lessen stress for our teachers. I am so excited about this effort’s power to change our part of the world!

MIDDLE SCHOOL SUCCESS

WHY MIDDLE SCHOOL?We invest in a number of programs serving students of all ages. But in 2010, knowing there was a gap in services for middle school youth and just how critical this period is for the future success of each student’s life, United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County’s board of directors agreed that it was time to concentrate our efforts and approved the creation of our Middle School Success (MSS) Initiative.

Our goal at the time was to help our community increase the quality and quantity of programs preparing students to enter high school, ready to succeed. Our purpose has grown to encompass a strategy to support students, families and their community - using the middle school itself as a hub of supportive services for all.

CONCENTRATING OUR IMPACT United Way is partnering with Asheville City Schools and Buncombe County Schools, nonprofit organizations and institutions of higher education to create collaborative approaches to our common challenges. With three years of work already underway, we are all working together to establish a community school strategy at Enka Middle, and will do the same at Erwin and Asheville Middle schools by 2017.

As we move forward, United Way will do what we do best - gather resources, align support and serve as an organizer so that our nonprofits and schools can do what they do best - help students, families and communities succeed.

In 2014, our board of directors approved a new three-year strategic plan. Among the many details of this plan are exciting developments for our Middle School Success Initiative, our community and kids like Becca.

Without intervention, middle school students with ONE OR MORE “INDICATOR” only have a 25% CHANCE OF GRADUATING from high school on time. What is an INDICATOR? attendance - Missing 18 days or 10% of school; behavior - 2 or more mild or serious infractions; course performance - Failing English or math in 6-9 grade. Early intervention is key... and it’s what United Way’s Middle School Success is all about.

DID YOU KNOW?

When her school counselor suggested she attend an after-school club called “Girls In Charge,” Becca wasn’t

exactly thrilled. Becca is quiet and doesn’t like big groups, but she went anyway, and by the end of the 8 weeks admitted to having had fun.

Her teacher at Enka Middle School is amazed. “I can’t believe how much more confident Becca is since she’s

been in this group. She’s raising her hand in class and less

afraid of making mistakes.” Becca’s overall attitude, confidence and grades are improving. Which is the whole point of “Girls In Charge” - a self-esteem building program that members of United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council help run.

Best moment? When the group ended, Becca stood up and told the volunteers “I know you are busy ladies and you could be anywhere but you chose to be with us. Thank you.”

United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County’s Alex de Tocqueville Society was created in 1990 to recognize individuals and couples who invest $10,000 or more each year. Since that time, members of The Tocqueville Society have generously given nearly $12 million to change the lives of their neighbors in need.

“I must say that I have seen Americans make a great deal of real sacrifices to the public welfare; and have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend a faithful support to one another.”

Alexis de TocquevilleDemocracy in America - 1835

“Where would our community be without United Way? Keith and I appreciate how United Way brings together donors and volunteers so that we can connect and respond to the needs in our community. “

ABOUT THE TOCQUEVILLE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

In 1973, United Way of America began honoring an individual or family who had demonstrated extraordinary commitment, leadership and service and made a broad impact on their community and/or the nation. Previous winners of the national award include: Ambassador Walter Annenberg, Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, Senator and Mrs. John Glenn, and Bob Hope.

Local United Ways followed and soon began recognizing one of their own. Our United Way began the tradition in 2002, with Buddy and Marilyn Patton and Barbara Blomberg being honored as the first winners of our Tocqueville Society Community Service Award.

This award is given to a Tocqueville Society member who has demonstrated the following:

• Outstanding contributions to the nonprofit health and human services of our community.

• Commitment to the work of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County with gifts of time and money.

• Sustained contributions over a period of years to a variety of nonprofits.

• Leadership that promotes philanthropy throughout the community.

Past honorees in Buncombe County:

On December 12, 2014, George and Barbara Groome recieved the Tocqueville Community Service Award. Their leadership and financial support has transformed our community, having a long lasting and far reaching impact. We are grateful for their work and friendship. Thank you!

CONNECTING PEOPLE// GIVE HELP & GET HELP

HANDS ON ASHEVILLE-BUNCOMBE, the volunteer center of United Way, connects thousands of people to ways they can give back to our community by volunteering with United Way or with one of the many nonprofits that list opportunities in our database.

NC 2-1-1 ASHEVILLE CALL CENTER connects people within a seven-county region in western North Carolina to needed community resources. This service is free, confidential, available 24/7 and in all languages.

call toACTION

Tell people about 2-1-1! Invite us to speak to your neighborhood meeting or faith community. Visit unitedwayabc.org/2-1-1 and copy and share the video link that explains our service.

Last year, our referral specialists handled more than 50,000 calls and thousands more visited our on-line database to search resources on their own.

CONCENTRATING OUR IMPACTBOTH HANDS ON ASHEVILLE-BUNCOMBE AND NC 2-1-1 do a great job of providing lots of ways for people across

our area to give or get help. As we elevate the work of our Middle School Success intiative and our increased emphasis in supporting students, families and community, we will develop special roles for these two resources within the three pilot schools of Enka, Erwin and Asheville middle schools.

Concentrating community volunteer power may look different at each school but the behind the scenes organization and promotion is much the same. We will work with each school to identify their exact volunteer needs (and capacity) and find the community members and groups to achieve their goals.

In addition, our 2-1-1 staff are already hard at work building special school-specific resource pages on our website and eventually will provide on-site services at the schools.

This is an exciting time for us - as we find new ways to partner with others and increase the success of our kids, families and communities.

I deeply care about education and being a part of United Way gives me the opportunity to channel my resources and directly make a positive impact in my community. The Middle School Success initiative is just one of the ways United Way helps students in our community move through middle school and on to graduation.

- Himanshu Karvir Holiday Inn West

The impact United Way has on our community is phenomenal. It is powerful to know that both our time and money stay local but it’s just as powerful to know that because of my involvement I am helping to set an example for my three girls about what it means to care for our neighbors.

MARQUE ELDIAL

Help us spread the word about 2-1-1. Tell your co-workers, faith community, neighbors and family that anyone can dial 2-1-1 to connect with a network of over 18,000 resources right here in North Carolina.

Althea has Alzheimer’s. Ron just learned that she would no longer be able to attend the day center due to her growing violent outbursts. He was given the name of someone who might be able to help his wife, but didn’t have a number or know where she worked. That’s when he called 2-1-1, United Way’s 24/7 information and referral line.

Our 2-1-1 referral specialist did some investigative work and found the person he was looking for. The call could’ve ended there and been a success, but our specialist understands just how hard it is to be a caregiver and offered information on additional resources. She also offered to check back in, to see how things were going for the couple.

When 2-1-1 contacted Ron a few weeks later he gave a wonderful update. They have an appointment scheduled with the person he was searching for. And, based on the information provided, Ron had his wife re-evaluated by a doctor. Althea’s medications were adjusted, which has greatly reduced her outbursts and alleviated much of the stress they were under. In fact, Althea is back at the day center and doing well. Ron will attend his first caregiver support group in June.

Middle schoolers with a supporting community are more engaged in class, get better grades, make attendance a priority and enjoy learning about all kinds of new things. They’re also more likely to be prepared for high school and go on to graduate. We all have something to contribute. Join tutors, mentors, and others who care.

Asheville is my hometown, and I want to see our city continue to flourish in a conscious, mindful way. Successful communities are possible when people are drawn to work together for its greater good. Being a part of United Way allows us to work together towards the mission of providing access to education, financial stability, and health to all of our residents

- Joanne BadrWard and Smith, P.A.

Being a part of the Women’s Leadership Council affords me the unique opportunity to interact with amazing women who want to make a difference in our community. We do this by supporting United Way financially and focusing our time and talents on the success of our Middle School youth and it has been powerful to see what we’ve already accomplished.

“Young professionals in Buncombe County have always had compassionate hearts and philanthropic spirits. Over the last ten years, Highlands Circle has enabled those young professionals to make an even greater impact with their gifts than they would have made individually. By contributing $128,674 this year alone, my peers have made sure that their desire to make our community healthier, more financially stable and better educated is being heard. Highlands Circle is 170 members strong, up 25% over last year, and there is no shortage in the potential of this group to bring about lasting, meaningful change for us and our neighbors.”

TAKE

ACTI

ON• MAKE A GIFT OF STOCK. Some benefits:

• claiming market value of the securities as a tax -deductible contribution,

• avoiding capital gains tax, local and state taxes on the profit from the sale of securities, and

• lowering the cost basis of the gift.

Contact Elizabeth Allen if you have questions: 239-1048.

• MAKE A LASTING GIFT. Endowed gifts create tangible and sustainable resources that are dedicated – forever – to our mission. Some ways to create an endowed gift: Retirement Assets, Savings Bonds, Life Insurance Benefits, Cash and Securities. Talk to David 255-0696 to learn more.

• HELP US DO MORE! Ask your friends to join you as a donor and send them to unitedwayabc.org/give

• LIKE US! No really, please go and like/follow/join us on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. You can find all our pages here: unitedwayabc.org/social_media

• SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT NC2-1-1 Does your workplace have a public lobby? Would you be able to distribute information to your employees? Contact us for brochures or schedule a presentation at your next staff meeting.

• FIND YOUR NEXT VOLUNTEER ADVENTURE Visit handsonasheville.org where you can sign up for all kinds of volunteer opportunities. We’ve got kid-friendly, one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities... pretty much anything you could ask for!

We know the benefits to corporate volunteering— retaining top talent, improved skills, increased employee satisfaction, and a positive public image to name a few—but sometimes it can be challenging to connect with a nonprofit or coordinate a project.

HANDS ON ASHEVILLE-BUNCOMBE has been the volunteer center of UNITED WAY since 2003. HANDS ON can help you build or expand effective volunteer programs that work with your employees’ interests and schedule. You can engage your employees and learn from other leading companies with fun, flexible service projects that provide meaningful experiences.

Great Things Happen When We LIVE UNITED!United Way is committed to reducing the impact of poverty on people’s lives and strengthening our community. We do this by focusing on the EDUCATION, INCOME and HEALTH of our community but to be successful we will need everyone to answer our call to GIVE, ADVOCATE AND VOLUNTEER.

Each year, 700+ local middle school students participate in Students @ Work Week, a joint project of the NC Business Council for Education and the NC Department of Public Instruction. The goal is for businesses to help students connect career interests to their daily school experience. We are one of seven organizations that help coordinate activities.
