Hospitality lies in the very heart of Arabian culture. Visitors today experience a welcome unmatched anywhere else, from the traditional serving of Arabic coffee to an absolute dedication of the highest standards of modern service.

Abu Dhabi’s unique charm is reflected in the blend of ancient 19th century traditions and modern 21st century economy and lifestyle. Old world courtesies still prevail and traditional culture is very much alive. Visitors can see craftsmen demonstrating ancient skills or experience camel riding, falconry, ayallah dancing, and henna painting, and can earn

about age-old customs from local people who enthusiastically share their traditions. The meetings industry may well trace its routes back to Arabia’s ancient past. For generations, business has been conducted in the pleasing surroundings of the majlis – a tented meeting place – where hospitality abounded before negotiations began.

The tradition, which dates back to ancient Silk Route trading stops, and characterised the early signing of petroleum concessions, lives on today. The meetings industry can now relive the traditions of Arabia’s past in a thoroughly modern context.

Welcome to our meeting place where travellers from all over the world receive a warm greeting and experience the respect of UAE residents.

The ‘majilis’ (“place of sitting”) as social gathering place is a cornerstone of Emirati culture.

Welcome to our Meeting Place“Ahlan Wa’sahlan Fi al Majlis”

The UAE is a singular contributor to WEC’s mission of promoting sustainable supply and use of energy.

A central player in the global hydrocarbon economy, the UAE has simultaneously emerged as one of the world’s leading investors in low-carbon energy, with pioneering projects and policies in renewable and nuclear energy, as well as energy efficiency and carbon sequestration – both abroad and domestically. The UAE moreover deploys a highly successful international partnership model. We work with the world’s leading energy companies and voices, not least the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) headquartered in Abu Dhabi, to ensure that the industry continues to meet demand while continually improving its environmental and cost profile. With a long history of touchstone international energy events, such as the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) and the World Future Energy Summit, we are also uniquely placed to host the WEC community. The UAE looks forward to working closely with the Council and each committee to design the best possible Congress for 2019.

A Reliable Energy Partner

For more than half a century the UAE has been a reliable, stable supplier of energy to world markets. The UAE is the world’s seventh* biggest oil producer and exporter. Our current production capacity is approximately 2.9 million* barrels a day, expanding to 3.5 million* barrels per day by 2017. This will give us the capacity to respond to supply disruptions or spikes in global demand. The UAE is moreover committed to being one of the most efficient oil producers in the world. We were the first oil producer in the region to ban gas flaring wherever technically feasible. Recently, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) was ranked as the world’s best-performing oil company in terms of emissions per barrel of oil. In producing energy, we also work closely and uninterruptedly with international partners, in joint ventures going back 75 years in some cases – a mark of international confidence in the UAE as a long-term partner.

Embracing Diversification

The UAE foresees increasing diversification in global energy markets – and opportunities in the changes. We are applying the same principles of partnership and sustainability from our oil and gas experience to the booming fields of low-carbon energy. On the civil nuclear side, we are creating a new, replicable model of transparency, with full involvement of the international community and adherence to the highest standards of safety, security, non-proliferation and operational openness. The UAE’s nuclear program will deliver 5.4 GW of energy by 2020, which will account for about 20% of the UAE’s projected electricity demand and eliminate an equivalent percentage of the power sector’s carbon footprint. The UAE is also making notable investments and policy interventions in energy efficiency. We established the first mandatory green building codes in the Middle East, which are cutting water and energy consumption by over 33%. The UAE has also enacted the Middle East’s first mandatory appliance efficiency standards, as well as the first smart metering program. This year, we additionally introduced the region’s first regulatory standards for energy service companies.

Why United Arab Emirates?

UAE Member Committee Bid for the World Energy Congress 2019 Abu Dhabi 2019

Changing the Game

The UAE has been a vocal advocate for new clean energy technology. We set the first renewable energy targets in the region and have steadily increased our investment portfolio as renewable costs continue to plummet. In 2013, we inaugurated the 100 MW Shams 1, the largest renewable energy project to date in the region, as well as the Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, with the region’s largest PV installation.

Our activities are not just at home; the UAE is also a major investor in renewable energy projects and companies in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, Spain and the United States. It is also a major donor, committing over $450 million of concessional finance for renewables

and delivering projects in Afghanistan, Mauritania, Seychelles, and Tonga in 2013 alone. We are also investing heavily in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, which will allow even deeper carbon cuts in the future. ADNOC and Masdar are today developing the region’s first commercial-scale CCS project, which is set to re-inject 800,000 tons of carbon annually.

Internationally, Masdar City, a multi-billion dollar clean technology cluster, is a model for ground-breaking building, construction and energy efficiency technologies. It also houses the Masdar Institute, the graduate university established in partnership with MIT, which is producing both new intellectual property and the next generation of energy leaders.

International Cooperation

The UAE is an international center of discussion on the future of the energy industry. Our capital notably hosts ADIPEC, the largest oil and gas event within the region and the largest outside of North America. Abu Dhabi is also the home of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) and its anchoring World Future Energy Summit, constituting the world’s largest annual sustainable energy and water event, with some 30,000

participants from over 160 countries in 2013, the $4 million Zayed Future Energy Prize, is being awarded annually to recognize and reward the achievements in renewable energy and as a catalyst for innovation in sustainability. Abu Dhabi also hosts the headquarters of IRENA, the first major intergovernmental organization to be headquartered in the Middle East.

World Future Energy Summit (WFES)

Since inception in 2008, the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) hosted by MASDAR, the Abu Dhabi government’s multi-billion dollar clean energy initiative, has emerged as one of the most important global events, focused on renewable energy. The annual event, with His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, as its patron, combines a powerful conference track. It features some of the world’s leading experts in (renewable energy) policy, technology and resource development and, a trade exhibition, showcasing the latest products and services. In total, WFES 2011 received more than 26,000 attendees from 112 countries including 35 government delegations and more than 700 international and local media personnel.

Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC)

Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference is the world’s third largest oil & gas event and, the biggest and most prestigious gathering for the petroleum industry in the region. In addition to the exhibition and conference, ADIPEC features allied events such as the ADIPEC Golf Day, site visits and educational tours. 1,500 exhibiting companies and nearly 40,000 industry personnel from 89 countries were in attendance. Energy ministers from the UAE, Bahrain and Oman as well as other VIPs including the then British Prime Minister Gordon Brown delivered speeches at the show. The ADIPEC conference regularly features in excess of 2,000 delegates.

Zayed Future Energy Prize

The Zayed Future Energy Prize came to fruition as a result of the vision of the late Ruler of Abu Dhabi and Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In 2008 at the World Future Energy Summit, His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the UAE, announced The Zayed Future Energy Prize, to honour his father’s legacy of environmental stewardship.

Finalists are nominated by experts across the globe while the winners are chosen by a jury chaired by HE Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, President of the Republic of Iceland.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Tour The Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque is one of the world„s largest mosques and is a truly international architectural masterpiece. It is home to the world„s largest hand-made carpet, designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi and woven by more than 200 workers who spent 12 months completing the spectacular piece of art in 28 different colours. The Mosque is a magnificent addition to Islamic architectural splendour and is a landmark in the United Arab Emirates and the whole region. The main prayer hall, under three large domes, can accommodate over 6,000 worshippers and the whole mosque can accommodate 40,000 worshippers. There are complimentary guided tours of the mosque with trained Emirati guides every day. The tours are an excellent platform for cultural and religious understanding.

Safari into The Empty Quarter’s Sounds and Colours of Silence For the most spectacular desert experience, there is nothing like a safari to the Liwa region in the south of the emirate where sand dunes are as high as skyscrapers. Starting from the edge, you will drive through the golden dunes of the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter), the largest desert of the region, and stay overnight at the Liwa Hotel or stunning Qasr Al Sarab (Mirage Palace), surrounded by some of the world„s highest sand dunes and overlooking a breathtaking oasis.

Socialize with Emiratis The UAE is a young and vibrant nation. The people hold their ancestors, who worked hard under the harsh desert environment to cater for their families and community, in high esteem, particularly of the late UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan who is revered for the great strides the emirate took under his role. Emiratis are well educated, widely travelled and well versed in English. Living up to old Arab traditions and customs, they are hospitable, friendly and like to share their culture with visitors. For guests who are interested in meeting and socialising with locals and gaining first-hand knowledge of their customs, nature, thoughts or way of life, this will be a unique opportunity. Embrace Arabia is a specialised company that provides seminars and training programmes on communication in diverse and multicultural communities.

Tour The Camel Market The Al Ain Camel Market is famous throughout the country and attracts breeders and buy-ers from all over the UAE. It has recently been transferred to a new site on the Mezyad Road. The camels are kept in a series of fenced paddocks according to their intended use. Young camels, reared for meat, are separated from older animals kept for breeding and milk. The lively, bustling market provides an opportunity to hear traders extolling the merits of their prized animals, discussing prices and negotiating sales. The close relationship developed over many centuries between Arabs and their camels has given these extraordinary animals a special place in the UAE„s heritage.

Carpets Buying a carpet can be a fascinating experience; most carpets found in Abu Dhabi originate from Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, China and Central Asia, and come in an exquisite array of designs and colours. To ensure you are buying the genuine article at a good price, it is advisable to learn a bit about carpets before making your final decision. Visit a number of shops to get a feel for price, quality and traditional designs. As a very rough guide, the higher the number of knots per square inch, the higher the price and the better the quality. Silk is more expensive than wool, and rugs from Iran are generally more valuable than the equivalent from Turkey or Kashmir. Check also whether the carpet was made by machine or by hand; handmade carpets are never quite perfect and the pile is uneven, yet they are more valuable than their machine made counterparts.

Gold jewellery Gold jewellery is in abundant supply, whatever your taste. Gold is priced according to the international daily gold rate, and is available in 18, 21, 22 or 24 carats. Shopping for gold is a fascinating activity, due to the wide range of styles available, from clean and classic western designs to opulent, ornate Arabian wedding jewellery. You can also buy gold ingots in varying sizes, either for investment or to have moulded into your own design. In addition to the weight price, a small charge is added for craftsmanship, which varies according to the intricacy of design. The Gold Souk in Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre has many jewellers, including some of the Gulf’s largest. Apart from the souk, you’ll also find some big name jewellers in the shopping malls, such as Cartier, Chopard and Tiffany & Co. Regional jewellers to look out for include Damas, Pure Gold and Rivoli.

Modern souks Part of the Shangri-la Hotel complex near Abu Dhabi’s Mangrove Village, The Souk Qaryat at Al Beri is a contemporary adaptation of a typical Arabian market and home to local and international retail brands, coffee shops and a diverse range of restaurants. Abras (water taxis) take you around the souk via meandering manmade canals, and the stunning waterside complex offers alfresco dining in beautiful architectural surroundings. The Souk at Central Market is a must visit destination for residents and tourists. Take a trip to Abu Dhabi’s Al Markaziyah district and explore a variety traditional and regional products ranging from jewellery, carpets, antiques to traditional tailoring, fashion and diverse restaurants.

Shopping Malls in Abu Dhabi Spacious, modern and air conditioned, Abu Dhabi’s malls are a welcome escape from the summer heat and a world of choice when it comes to shopping. In Abu Dhabi, malls are a place to catch up with friends or for a family outing - and the fun can go on until late at night. With their imaginative designs and wide range of outlets, shopping malls are perennially popular. The bigger malls buzz with activity as people meet, eat, pose and parade. During festive occasions such as Eid or Ramadan, malls are venues for special events such as dance or cultural shows, often featuring international acts. They also hold numerous raffles, often with huge prizes such as luxury cars or cash.

Shopping & lifestyle Shopping is something of a national pastime in Abu Dhabi, perhaps because it’s so diverse: everything from ultra-modern malls with the latest brands, to small, souk-like outlets where you can buy traditional perfumes, handicrafts, spices and carpets. You can spend thousands of dollars on a bejewelled designer watch, or pick up a basic timepiece in a supermarket. You can splash out on an ‘haute-couture’ designer outfit, or buy fabric and have a local tailor make up your very own creation for a bargain price. You can buy a treasured Arabian antique, or a technology busting super modern home entertainment system. Prices are often excellent in comparison to those abroad, especially for carpets, textiles and gold. If you are a good bargainer, you can get even better deals. Most shops open from around 10am to 10pm, and later on weekends. Although most malls work straight through, some independent shops close for an extended lunch break, usually from 1pm to 4pm. Hours usually change during Ramadan, with many shops closing for the afternoon and reopening from 7pm until midnight or even later.

We invite you to explore the many attractions of the United Arab Emirates during your time here.

To the east, there’s the „Oasis City’ of Al Ain – lying near the Oman border. This tranquil city – Abu Dhabi’s heritage heartland – lies under the shadow of Jebel Hafeet – the emirate’s tallest peak at 1,340 metres. Take a ride up the winding highway which mounts Jebel Hafeet and take a break at the three-star Mercure Hotel to savour the views. Seven oases surround Al Ain – which means spring – and water from the mountains trickles down, guided into traditional ‘falaj’ irrigation systems, to feed the dense date palm groves in the oases. A walk through the preserved Al Ain Oasis is a calming pastime and takes the imagination back generations. In Al Ain you can visit numerous heritage sites and museums, play golf on an all-grass course lying in the shadow of Jebel Hafeet, take the kids to Hili Fun City for a bundle of very cost-effective fun or the Arabian Wildlife Park to see some the world’s last remaining white lions and tigers or visit one of numerous modern shopping malls or traditional souks.

In the Western Region – Al Gharbia – you can find unspoilt beaches and some of the best desertscapes around. You can visit Mirfa and seen the quaint fishing harbour, Jebel Dhanna for a five-star break, take a trip to the Desert Islands Resorts & Spa on Sir Bani Yas Island and join in any of a range of activities, including tours of the Arabian Wildlife Park or relax in the unique architectural splendour of Qasr Al Sarab (Mirage Palace) amid the simply breathtaking dunes of the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter).

For those inclined to bask in the sun, the beaches of the United Arab Emirates offer family fun or relaxation to suit a range of budgets and tastes.

Louvre Abu Dhabi Due to open in 2015, Louvre Abu Dhabi will be the first universal museum in the Arab world. Born of an agreement between the governments of Abu Dhabi and France, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will display art, manuscripts and objects of historical, cultural and sociological significance. Spanning millennia, the items on display will originate from societies and cultures all over the world, but universal themes and common influences will be highlighted to illustrate similarities arising from shared human experience transcending geography, nationality and history.

Zayed National Museum Opening in 2016, and at the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District the Zayed National Museum, is the centrepiece of the island. Fittingly elevated above the rest of the cultural district at its highest point, the museum tells the story of the region’s history and the unification of the United Arab Emirates through the life and person of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, father of the nation. Inspired by the dynamic of flight and the feathers of a falcon, the design reflects Sheikh Zayed’s love of falconry and creates an iconic symbol for the nation. Cutting-edge design, materials and construction methods are combined to create a spectacular addition to the Saadiyat Island skyline.

UAE Pavilion Another monumental new structure on Saadiyat island; the UAE Pavilion, which was relocated to Abu Dhabi after hosting the UAE’s national exhibition at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Reconstructed under the instruction of Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), the master developer of major cultural, residential and tourism destinations in Abu Dhabi, and commissioned by the National Media Council. The pavilion is now a landmark exhibition and events venue, hosting some of the UAE’s most important cultural functions, in its permanent home adjacent to Manarat Al Saadiyat. The structure, which was originally designed by the award-winning Foster + Partners, resembles a golden sand dune, and has received praise for its sustainable design, which ensures a large reduction in external heat gain.

Dr. Christophe Frei Secretary General World Energy Council 8th floor Regency house 1-4 Warwick Street London W1B 5LT

Dear Dr. Frei

2019 WORLD ENERGY CONGRESS

I write to affirm Masdar’s support towards the co-operative efforts of the Ministry of Energy, the UAE National Committee of the World Energy Council and the bid for the 2019 World Energy Congress to be hosted in the UAE capital.

As you are well aware, the energy sector is one of the strategic and economic pillars of Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Our emirate’s economic diversification initiatives are also beginning to bear dividends, with Abu Dhabi increasingly recognised around the world as a key business and tourism hub. Having successfully hosted major international events and conventions such as the Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, World Future Energy Summit, World Ophthalmology Congress, and with world-class infrastructure and services in place, I believe that Abu Dhabi has all of the right credentials to host the World Energy Congress in 2019.

As one of the key organisations within the emirate’s energy sector, Masdar will fully endeavour to support the Host City’s efforts for the congress, should Abu Dhabi be selected by your membership as such.

We look forward to welcoming the World Energy Congress and its delegates to Abu Dhabi and together inviting the world’s leaders in the field to discuss energy issues and solutions from a global perspective.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber Chairman
