Unit 1: Critical Thinking Unit Length: 2 Weeks
Mathematics Unit Plan
Teacher: Christopher
Grade: 11 Course: Algebra II
Unit Title: Critical Thinking -‐ Systems of Equations LEARNING TARGETS LT 1: I can build a function that models a relationship between two quantities-‐CCSS (F-‐BF.1/2) LT 2: I can create equations that describe numbers or relationships-‐ CCSS (A-‐CED.1) LT 3: I can represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically-‐ CCSS (A-‐REI.11) LT 4: I can solve equations and inequalities in one variable-‐ CCSS (A-‐REI.1/2) UNIT OVERVIEW Overall summary of the unit, activities, tasks, and/or content.
In this unit the students will develop their critical thinking skills while learning systems of equations. They will do this by learning to take real world situations and be able to build functions that represent those situations. We will then expand it to two variables. They will then learn techniques for solving those systems. We will then extend systems to more than two variables and develop methods that can more easily solve systems with 3 or more variables. The end result will be that the students using their critical thinking to access, use, and apply any information they need to take a real situation with many variables, translate it into a system, and solve it using the best method. MOTIVATORS Hooks for the unit and supplemental activities. (PBL scenarios, video clips, websites, literature)

What are the components of a linear function? How can I create an equation to represent a real situation? Set: Give the students teacher created word problems that need to be solved with Algebra. Introducing why it’s important to learn to solve for variables in the first place. Introduce how applying critical thinking we can solve these problems. Give the students access to their iPads to help them solve the problems if they forgot. Teaching Strategies
• Students and teacher will follow the program for this lesson http://map.mathshell.org/materials/lessons.php?taskid=554&subpage=concept
• Students will complete http://map.mathshell.org/materials/tasks.php?taskid=293&subpage=novice individually and we will go over them together as a class.
• Students will complete http://map.mathshell.org/materials/tasks.php?taskid=263&subpage=apprentice individually and we will go over them together as a class.
• Students will be paired and required to explain to their partner how they arrived at their answers, each student will be given structured time to talk to their partner. They will then come to a consensus among themselves and we will then come together as a class and come to consensus.
• The teacher will have the entire class sign up in Khan Academy. The teacher will sign up as a coach and have the students join the teacher’s class. The teacher will give assignments via the recommendations option.
• Unless another activity is planned the students will work on their Khan recommendations. The process should be; assign the work, students initially work individually, if they get stuck they can watch the khan videos, if they are still stuck they work collaboratively, if they are still stuck they seek out the teacher for direct instruction. The goal being that they learn to access and apply the information on their own leaving the teacher as an absolute last resort.
Summarizing Strategy Create word problems that force the students to create equations and inequalities and solve them. Have the students work individually, and have the students, in writing, explain their reasoning. Collect it as an exit ticket and give remediation, if necessary, based on the results. Homework Finish any Khan Academy recommendations that they do not complete in class.

Enrichment Any students that are getting ahead on their khan work will have a choice of extra khan assignments that will get them ahead for Pre-‐Calculus. students. Require them to be finished before they take their summative. Exit ticket for the week’s summary.
