Dr. Lockhart Interview--PrincipalResources to enhance multicultural education:

• Lake Erie Prep’s student population is 100 % Black• Multicultural education will come from the teachers

teaching their culture and the teachers being willing to learn the culture of their students.

• The key becomes the teachers learning the culture of the students first because once students realize that you care, they’ll learn anything. But, if you don’t care about their culture, you’re going to have a rough year.

Unique Cultural Experiences that Students Will Bring To the Classroom:

LEP African American students bring with them alternative capital; bring different skill sets into the classroom. Teachers need to understand what they are and how to tap into them.

Skills they bring:• Navigational Skills: students can read signs on the poles and

navigate routes home and alternative routes if there is impending danger from gang activity.

• Understanding what teddy bears on a pole mean or shoes thrown over an electric line as a part of their culture and community.

• Linguistic Skills: they understand the different nuances in language as they transition from place to place, and home to home.

In this environment…Everybody learns, students and teachers.

Page 18: ICAN presentation

Challenges: As with many urban schools, teachers come from middle

class America who are white that do not understand the culture and refuse to learn the culture of their students.

However, a teacher who can keep their own identity and yet learn the culture of her students can flourish in this type of community.

Example:Math teacher who teaches math by using popular

music and students’ culture to connect students to curriculum. Has the highest test score across middle school in the network because she is culturally responsive in her teaching. This is also called CRCM: culturally responsive classroom management.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR FINALIST

Ashley Faller, first grade teacher at the Lake Erie Preparatory School, has been named a Teacher of the Year Finalist by the Ohio Council of Community Schools (OCCS). Ashley Faller has been teaching first grade at Lake Erie Preparatory School since 2013 and has demonstrated a commitment to the mission and vision of Lake Erie Preparatory School by truly embodying the components of doing whatever it takes to ensure her scholars are prepared for second grade and the future. She creates a safe and inviting environment where all scholars feel comfortable engaging in the learning process.

Scholars in Ms. Faller's classroom are eager to participate and show what they know because they are truly proud of their learning and success. Ms. Faller creates rigorous and relevant lessons in which she makes age appropriate connections to potential colleges and careers for the scholars. One hundred percent of Ms. Faller's scholars can actively recite the school's mission and explain what it means to them now and in the future

Connection to Text

“When teachers—regardless of their own social class backgrounds—are consciously prepared to be aware of, to think, and to act in multicultural ways, they are more likely to be effective in teaching students from a variety of backgrounds” (Cushner, et al, 2012).
