1 Most college students go through relationships and break-ups throughout their college careers. There is
a good chance this means students will be spending Valentine’s Day alone at some point during their four
years on campus.
2 This notion1 spurs2 the “Singles Awareness Day” movement that single people all over the world have
embraced3. This concept sheds light on4 the other side of Valentine’s Day: People that have been hurt in
relationships and have had the single life thrust5 upon them.
3 I want to propose a different way of thinking about this. I’ll be “alone” on Valentine’s Day, but I won’t
be desperately wishing I was cuddling6 in a lover’s arms or dreaming about “what could have been”. I’m
choosing to focus on what I’ve learned through past experiences, and how I’ve grown because of them. In
my interviews, I encouraged the broken hearted to take this mindset7 as well.
4 Keith Weinstein, a senior, discussed his experience with love and break-ups with me. Keith came to JMU
with a girlfriend that was attending a different college. Despite the common advice to enter college single,
Keith admitted to being “blinded by love”.
5 This story does not have a fairy tale ending. Like many
long distance relationships, Keith’s floundered8 and did not
last. As he says, “sometimes the love is right, but the timing is
off.”
6 Long distance relationships make building love much
more difficult. Keith still has negative feelings about college
relationships, but he was able to get over that hurdle9 to
discover how he benefited from his break-up.
7 “The early 20’s are where we are supposed to learn what
we want in a companion through trial-and-error,” Keith
explained. Like every relationship, Keith’s had its ups and
downs. They were really good together, but not perfect.

8 If you reflect on a relationship, you can find things you
would do differently. Keith decided that he “would want to
have more space, as well as give my significant other more
space.”
9 While this won’t help Keith rekindle10 his past love, he can
use it in his future relationships. He was able to learn more of
what he wants in a companion, the key to moving on and up to
a stronger relationship.
10 Second semester senior Steve Busby is currently bearing the fresh pain of a recent break-up. He had
been dating a girl for over a year and a half, until they broke up after winter break.
11 He has persevered11 through this with his hope for the future. Steve realized, “she’s 95% of what
I’m searching for in a girl.” Instead of seeing that as a terrible dilemma, Steve viewed his situation from a
different perspective12. He continued, “It just makes me excited to meet the next girl that is 96% of what I
want, then 97% of what I want, until I find my 100%, the perfect girl for me.”
12 This isn’t easy for anyone, especially a college student. You learn that through meeting and
familiarizing yourself with new people that have distinct13 personalities from what you’ve grown
accustomed to.
13 Break-ups are painful, and it’s not easy to get over them. Time will gradually relieve the pain and a
contrasting outlook will help you move on.
14 In the words of senior Julia Henderson, “pain is the pathway to happiness.”
15 I want to change peoples’ perceptions of break-ups. Start a different conversation. The end of one
relationship is just another learning opportunity to grow through, to help make your next relationship a
little more successful.
16 As senior Evan Beach wisely expressed, “Love is a battlefield. You just have to keep fighting.”

their love story unfold like an upmarket soap opera.

1 Every look, kiss and brush of the hand has
been studied carefully and analysed. Yet this couple
has remained extraordinarily ordinary.
2 As in all the longest lasting relationships, the
pair started as just good friends. Berkshire-born
Kate, who studied Art History at the University of
St. Andrews, would often join William for a swim
or a run, and took notes for him if he missed a
lecture.
3 Then, in March 2002, everything changed. Kate
took part in a charity1 fashion show, sashaying2
down the catwalk in a black mini dress that
left just enough to the imagination. It showed a
different side of this otherwise wholesome3 young
woman. Suddenly, 20-year-old Kate was a serious
contender4 for the young prince’s affection. The
prince moved in for a kiss in the after-show party,
despite Kate’s boyfriend Rupert Finch being nearby
(and not happy). For once, William was rejected.
4 That only made him keener and, several months later when both were single, she finally relented5.
5 Few were fooled when Kate was described as William’s “flatmate” after moving in with him and two
friends. The media agreed not to photograph or shadow the prince at college, which gave their romance
room to breathe and develop at a natural pace.
6 In April 2004, Kate joined William, Prince Charles and other friends at Klosters, the Royal Family’s
favourite ski resort6 in Switzerland. A photograph of the prince tenderly kissing Kate’s neck in the queue
for a ski lift meant the royal cat was definitely out of the bag.
7 The pair could live a relatively normal life together at university, where they shared a flat. Back
home they settled into a domestic routine. Officially they still shared their home at 13A Hope Street with
William’s friend from Eton, Fergus. In reality he spent less and less time there. William and Kate became the
first royal couple to live together before marriage.
8 The fact that they have been able to live in relative privacy
is one reason that, despite the extraordinary attention they
receive, they are such a grounded couple. They have rows
like the rest of us. In summer 2004, William suggested a trial
separation. Kate stayed at the flat but moved into a separate
room, and the pair spent less time together. By the time
term started again that autumn, William had moved Kate’s
belongings back into his room and they were very much back
together.

Kate and her parents watched William’s passing-out parade7 from Sandhurst Military Academy. By now,
Kate had moved into her own apartment in Chelsea.
