Rocks and Rock Cycle

Lesson 1

Bell Ringer:

Listen to the song and then

explain what you remember

from 6th grade about

weathering and erosion.

• It’s a Hard Rock Life: Weathering and Erosion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGZa1n-9e6o&feature=player_embedded

Teacher’s Answer:

• Weathering is the breaking

down of rocks into smaller

pieces, eventually becoming

sediment.

• Erosion is when rocks or

sediment get moved from

one place to another.

Notes from Brainpop: Erosion

• Weathering occurs when rocks are broken down into fragments and eventually sediments.

Page 4: Unit: Weathering, Erosion, Rocks and Rock Cycle Lesson 1 ......2016/01/14  · Unit: Weathering, Erosion, Rocks and Rock Cycle Lesson 1 Bell Ringer: Listen to the song and then explain

• Erosion occurs when fragments or sediments from rocks are moved from one place to another place by wind, rain, or running water like rivers and oceans. ▪ Erosion can create floodplains,

sandbars, river deltas and canyons and can change shapes of mountains.

▪ Beaches are formed from weathering and erosion.

Examples of Floodplains

Page 8: Unit: Weathering, Erosion, Rocks and Rock Cycle Lesson 1 ......2016/01/14  · Unit: Weathering, Erosion, Rocks and Rock Cycle Lesson 1 Bell Ringer: Listen to the song and then explain

River Deltas – areas where a river meets a large body of water like the ocean or a lake. Deposition of sediments occur at where the river meets the body of water.

Notes from Brainpop: Weathering

1. Mechanical and Chemical Weathering a. Mechanical Weathering – breaks

down rocks without breaking down its chemical composition. Forces like growing plants, expanding ice, mineral crystal growth are all examples of mechanical weathering

b. Chemical Weathering – happens when water, air, and other substances react with the minerals in rocks, soil and/or building materials to change their chemical composition

• An example of chemical weathering is a cave because carbonic acid reacts with the calcite in limestone and over thousands of years can create caves.

Formative Assessment: Critical Thinking: Erosion or Weathering?

1. A man is driving by a cotton field during a very strong rainstorm. As he is driving he notices a lot of dirt draining off the field and onto the road.

What is this an example of? Why?

2. Niagara Falls is a big waterfall on the border of

Canada and the United States. Each year the edge of

the waterfall moves back a couple of centimeters

because the water is breaking apart the rocks on the

edge.

What is this an example of? Why?

3. A tree growing on a cliff is slowly growing its roots into the rocks and causing it to crack.

What is this an example of? Why?

4. A glacier is a big piece of ice that slowly moves. As it moves it digs up pieces of rocks and dirt and moves them down mountains.

What is this an example of? Why?

**If your answer was weathering then explain if the

example was chemical or mechanical weathering.
