    2: Academic Content

    2a Unit description and learning outcomes

    Nursing work is informed by a multiplicity of theoretical positions. In order to render theory useful, nurses combine theory with specific practices to make clinical and professional decisions. Various forms of evidence support these practice decisions. In this unit, students will explore those theories that directly inform the nurse-patient relationship in various clinical contexts.

    On completion of the unit, the student will:

    1. Differentiate the focus of nursing work in the primary, secondary, and tertiary health contexts.

    2. Develop logical and reasoned positions on clinical and professional issues using various forms of evidence.

    3. Use communication theory to guide and analyse nursing practice with individuals and groups.

    4. Demonstrate reasoned practice when assisting individuals with activities of daily living.

    5. Achieve a satisfactory practice level [in accordance with the ANMC National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse (2006) specified at page 12 and 19].

    3: Delivery of Unit and Timetable

    3a Delivery mode

    This unit is delivered in a traditional teaching/learning mode that will include a combination of formal lectures, tutorial sessions and workshop sessions held on campus additional to a one (1) week clinical placement to be attended off-campus.

    3b Timetable of activities, such as lectures/ tutorials/ practicals/ field classes, showing key dates and topics

    Attendance:

    Each week students are required to attend:

    1 x 1 hour lecture

    1 x 2 hour tutorial session

    1 x 6.5 hour workshop session.

    Additional compulsory attendance requirements:

    All students are required to attend:

    Clinical Placement in Week 10 [11 15 April, 2011]

    5 days x 8 hours.

    Workshop on Manual Handling: 1 x three (3) hour session to be held at The Canberra Hospital prior to your clinical placement [ACT Health mandated requirement for clinical practice: Week 10].

    Further information on these compulsory requirements will be provided in Week 1 with updates advised on the online learning unit site (Moodle).
