1. What are labour unions or trade unions?

People who represent worker’s in-terest.

2. What do they do?

They negotiate with employers about wages, working conditions, working hours and etc.

3. What can they do when dissatis-fied?If dissatisfied, they can take

such action called ‘industrial ac-tion’ and also take certain ac-tions such as working-to-rule, or go-slows (slowdown).

1. What are frequent cause of bad labour rela-tions?

2. What have the consequences of labour-market deregulation been?

3. Why can these consequences be a problem for management?

Bad communications; an adversarial (management vs. workers) attitude; a lack of consultation; and unions de-fending uneconomic working practices

Working conditions of many people getting much worse; the creation of many unskilled, casual part-time jobs done by non-unio-nized workers.

If workers are not represented by a union, there is no one representing the workers for management to nego-tiate with before or during a dispute.
