An international agreement established by the United Nations to protect the human rights of the child There are 54 articles to the Convention

The UK became a signatory to the UNCRC and agreed that from 1991 every child under 18 should have the rights listed in the Convention

‘The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child sets out the rights of every person under 18 and how those rights should be met.’

The UNCRC is broken down in to 54 Articles, and Article 31 states:

‘Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities.’

This article clearly states that every child has the right to play.

• Children will be given plenty of opportunities in the setting to sit and have quiet time.

• All settings will have a quiet area or a book corner where children can freely choose to go and sit.

• Practitioners will plan quieter activities throughout the day where children are encouraged to sit down – this could include circle time or story time.
