Task One. Part Three. Using the Internet as a research tool complete the glossary of terms sheet and uploaded

it to your blog.

Key Term Describe and explain the meaning of each term. Give examples where appropriate.

Video Formats eg .mov & avi A video file format is a type of file format for

storing digital video data on a computer system.

Video is almost always stored in compressed

form to reduce the file size.

Examples are: AVI, DivX, XVID, MP3, AAC, MP4,

VOB, MP4, M2TS, MOV, 3GP and MKV.

Streaming Streaming lets you watch films and TV online

instantly. You don't download the content, but

you can play it live on your device, such as a

laptop or iPad, via your internet connection.

Examples include Hulu and BBC iPlayer.

File Compression File compression is a data compression method

in which the size of a file is reduced to save

storage space as well as enabling the file to

upload to the internet faster.

Aspect Ratio: 4:3 and 16:9 The aspect ratio of an image describes the

proportional relationship between its width and its

height. It is commonly expressed as two numbers

separated by a colon, as in 16:9. For an x:y

aspect ratio, no matter how big or small the

image is, if the width is divided into x units of

equal length and the height is measured using

this same length unit, the height will be measured

to be y units.

If the ratio on your television or device you’re

watching a film on is different to the ratio of the

video then there will be a black box surrounding

the video. This is called letterboxing. If you do not

like seeing the black bars then you can alter the

aspect ratio to either crop or stretch the film to

remove the black borders.

Frame Rates In motion pictures and television, the frame rate

is the number of frames or images that are

projected or displayed per second. Common

frame rates are 24, 25 and 30 frames per

second.
