Why  did  the  Soviet  Union  fail?    Security  –  Secret  police  made  people  feel  less  secure,  not  more  secure.  

Poli'cal  Freedom  –  Dictators  ruled  by  force  without  the  people’s  consent.  

Economic  Growth  –  Weak  economy.  The  GDP  rose  slowly  or  not  at  all.  

Quality  of  Life  –  It  was  not  improving  for  people.    Na'onal  Unity  –LiWle  na'onal  unity.    People  were  more  loyal  to  their  ethnic  group  than  they  were  to  the  Soviet  Union.

AYer  the  Soviet  Union  failed,  it  broke  into  15  new  na'on-­‐states.    (Russia,  Kazakstan,  Georgia,  Ukraine…)  

                   A  na'on-­‐state  is  a  country    whose  people  mostly  share  a  

common  iden'ty.
