Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage

Primary

Data collected about the product by the researcher such as questionnaires and interviews.

The researcher can control the search allowing them to ask any questions and as many questions as they like.

There is a delayed response time, meaning that it may take time for the questionnaire to be made and filled. Interviewers are also expensive and some information may not be in date.

Secondary

Data that has already been made but are for the same subject like a magazine article on an existent topic.

The research has a larger amount of information and is far cheaper to gather.

The information could be wrong or no longer useful.

Quantitative

Numerical data normally in the form of a tally, graph or table.

It can in include a large amount of people’s thoughts making the data more accurate and reliable.

It is expensive and is usually a multiple choice question so the information is less specific.

Qualitative

Data that asks the audience more specific questions asking why and how the decisions should be carried out.

It is cheap and give you a more in-depth understanding of your target audience so you know why and how you can make it suit them.

The data cannot be concluded (summed up) and the questions can’t cover the vast variety of people that the Quantitative research can.

Researched used in Unit 21

For my research in Unit 21 I used Primary Research and watched some of the Mr Bean cartoons for some inspiration for my own animations.

Research Techniques

For Unit 18 I used YouTube to find Gum adverts such as Orbit and 5 Gum. I decided to used YouTube due to its shear number of videos and popularity. I could then use this to work out how to reach my target audience with my advert.

For Unit 21 I used YouTube to find different animations popular animations such as Mr Bean

Cartoon. I then learnt from this what audience I wanted to aim my

animation at.

Programs and Websites Used for Finding and Storing Information

When researching, I made a note on a Microsoft Word document of the websites I found that were useful as well as adding them to my favourites of Internet Explorer. Here is a list of websites that I found and saved:• Google - For initial searching. This search engine allows me to find

websites by using a variety of different search options.• YouTube - For finding Videos. YouTube is a popular website and

contains many useful videos that help me with my research.• ShortOfTheWeek - A website that contains the newest and best short

films. I used this website to find popular animations all the time and at the moment.

How Research Methods are used in real life

The different research methods can come in use in a variety of different products:• Primary research is one of the most common forms of research and would be useful in many

different cases. If I was creating a Reality TV show I would use Primary research to ask the audience basic questions like “who would you prefer to see in it”. This allows the audience to give a clear point to the producers allowing them to make a decision based on the audiences’ own opinions.

• Secondary Research is cheap and would involve the researcher searching for a similar, successful Reality TV show to enhance the chances of creating a successful one themselves. The downside to this being incorrect data which could potentially ruin the show. This is why the research may also take time if the company wish to make definite the information is legit.

• Quantitative Research would be one of the most useful for the Reality TV show to find out a higher number of peoples opinions. Quantitative Research lets you send questions to a very large amount of people, this however would only allow you to ask simple questions such as yes or no questions.

• Qualitative Research would allow you to understand specific opinions of the audience and ask more detailed questions. This process is very cheap but unfortunately cannot cover the large variety of people that the Quantitative research can. This research maybe useful to a Reality TV show so that questions such as “How” and “Why” can be answered.
