David S. Dockery was elected the 15th president of Union University on December 8, 1995. Since that time the university has seen an increase in student enrollment from 1975 in the Fall of 1996 to 2900 in 2005. The number of donors to the university has increased from around 2000 to 3900. The significant increase in giving to the university during this period has included ten of the largest gifts in Union’s long history. Dr. Dockery is providing leadership for a major five year strategic plan called Union 2010: A Vision for Excellence. The plan will be enabled by a $110 million campaign, of which over $70 million has been raised.

During his tenure the university has seen a strong increase in commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship. Union has been listed among the top tier institutions in the South each of the past nine years by U.S. News and World Report. Union has also been recognized during this time by Peterson’s Competitive College Guide, the Time/Princeton Review, and Templeton’s Colleges that Encourage Character Development.

The university has added several new degree programs including undergraduate majors in digital media studies, engineering, physics, sports medicine, political science, and ethics, among others, and graduate programs in business, intercultural studies, nursing, and education, including the doctor of education program and a graduate program in nurse anesthesia. Faculty development programs have been greatly enhanced and the breadth of student services has been visibly increased. A new campus master plan has seen the addition of two residence halls, the Miller Tower, Jennings Hall, Hammons Hall, the Fesmire baseball/softball complex, an athletic fieldhouse, and a soccer complex. Construction began on White Hall, a new 63,000 square foot science facility in 2005. A branch campus was established in Germantown, TN in 1997, which offers programs in education, business, and nursing.

Dockery is the author or editor of twenty-five books including The Holman Bible Handbook, Biblical Interpretation Then and Now, Theologians of the Baptist Tradition, and Shaping a Christian Worldview. In addition he has contributed to nearly thirty others including some of the most important reference books of the past decade such as The Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, The Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, The Holman Bible Dictionary, and The Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology. He is the author of almost 200 articles, chapters, and book reviews. A much sought after speaker on issues of higher education and cultural issues, Dockery has been invited to present lectures at numerous colleges, universities, and seminaries across the country.

In 2002 Dockery was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He serves on the board of directors of several civic groups and local foundations. Dockery also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, the Board of Reference of Prison Fellowship, the Executive Committee of the Consortium for Global Education, and the board of TICUA. He serves on the board of Christianity Today where he also serves as a consulting editor.

Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1952, Dockery holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and masters degrees from Grace Theological Seminary, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Texas Christian University. He holds the Ph.D. in Humanities from the University of Texas system. Dockery and his wife, Lanese, have three sons: Jonathan (who is married to the former Sarah Phillips), Benjamin, and Timothy.

Beginning his 32nd season as athletic director at Union University, The 2005-06 school year will see some changes and new additions to the department. Union has added women’s soccer to the list of varsity sports. Also, Dr. Blackstock returns to the coaching ranks as he will assume the softball head coaching duties in 2006.

Dr. David Blackstock will be leading an athletic department that is currently made up of 10 varsity sports and one junior varsity sport. For his efforts as athletic director during the 2003-04 season, Blackstock was voted the TranSouth Conference AD of the Year.

Blackstock spent 17 seasons at the helm of the women’s basketball program at Union, where he compiled a 509-89 overall record, earning his 500th career victory during the 1998-99 season. Numerous accomplishments have been a part of his basketball coaching career including, the 1998 NAIA Women’s Basketball National

Championship. In addition to the national title, Blackstock was named NAIA Coach of the Year and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1999.

Blackstock began his campaign at Union University as a baseball player in 1960 where he played for the Bulldogs until 1964. In 1967, Blackstock graduated from Memphis State University with a Master of Education degree and then moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he received his doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi. Blackstock then returned to Union in 1973 as athletic director and instructor in the physical education department.

Blackstock took over the baseball program in 1977 where he eventually guided the team to a third place finish in the NAIA World Series in 1983, the only season Union has participated in the event. It was at that same time that Blackstock turned his attention to the women’s basketball program. During the Lady Bulldog campaign, Blackstock went to the NAIA District 24 finals 11 times, capturing five district crowns, the 1998 national championship, and 12 conference championships. He guided the team to 10 national tournament berths in his final 12 seasons, participating three times in the title game.

UNION UNIVERSITY Season Outlook / Summary

Looking back at the 2004 season of the Union University Lady Bulldog volleyball team, many firsts stand out. With the outstanding leadership of their seniors, the Lady Bulldogs once again posted an impressive overall record of 31-5 and were undefeated in the TranSouth Conference with a record of 10-0. In addition to winning the regular season title, Union swept through the conference tournament to capture the tournament championship. And in their seventh trip to the NAIA Region XI Tournament, this year they came out on top. With the Region XI Tournament Championship, Union earned their first ever bid to the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament.

National Rankings were another thing that these Lady Bulldogs achieved. When the season began the Union Bulldogs were ranked No. 17. One of the many high points during the regular season was a stretch of 11 staight victories, including win over region foe and national power Georgetown College. During that stretch, Union reached the No. 11 spot in the polls, their highest national ranking in the short seven-year history of the program. Union finished the season with a 2-2 record in pool play in the national tournament and finished the season ranked No. 14 nationally.

Once again, Union Volleyball achieved numerous individual awards. Coach Brian Dunn was named the TranSouth Coach of the Year as well as the NAIA Region XI Coach of the Year. Also after the NAIA National Tournament, the American Volleyball Coaches Association tabbed Coach Dunn as the Region XI Coach of the Year. Gladys Wandera also received many honors for her play. Wandera finished the season with 750 kills, 76 service aces, and 161 blocks. The numerous honors she received were being named the TranSouth Conference Player of the Year, Region XI Player of the Year, first team All-Conference, first team All-Region, as well as being named to the AVCA All-American first team. Wandera was named the TranSouth Player of the Week five times, the NAIA Region XI Player of the Week four times, and the NAIA National Player of the Week once. Phylis Anyango also received many honors. Anyango finished the season with 531 kills and 97 total blocks. She was named to the first team All-Conference and All-Region as well as being named an honorable mention All-American performer. Tedy Georgieva was also named to the first team all-conference. Nicole Garber also had a great season. She was named to the first team All-Conference and was the TranSouth Setter of the Week seven times and the NAIA Region Setter of the Week twice. Allison Shein was also named to the first team All-Conference and was named the TranSouth Libero of the Week six times and NAIA Region XI Libero of the Week three times. With all of these awards, Union Volleyball swept the TranSouth weekly honors four times throughout this historic season.

This season was full of firsts and will be remembered as a very historic season. The Union University Lady Bulldog volleyball program looks to use the momentum gained from the 2004 season as a starting point for many great years to come.

2004 Season Summary

2005 Season OutlookUnion University Volleyball looks to rebuild this season as they lost five seniors and two key underclassmen from the recorded breaking season of 2004. Entering its eighth season of varsity competition, the Lady Bulldogs will look to new head coach, Steven Gream, as he becomes only the second coach in the short history of the Union volleyball program. His familiarity with the program and his experience on past Union championship teams should prove valuable as he builds to continue the winning tradition at Union.

Union will look to the only two returning players, Lindsay Holmes and Purity Ogolla, to provide an understanding of what it means to be a part of a winning program. To assist them with those efforts, Union has signed three transfers from California, and has also added the Jackson Sun Player of the Year, Amanda Hutchison from Trinity Christian Academy here in Jackson.

While the 2005 Volleyball team has no seniors, five juniors make up the largest class on the 2005 roster. Returning players Holmes and Ogolla join with transfers Monica Schirmer, Edith Mendoza, and Elena Villagomez. This group has plenty of playing time and experience that will be valuable to this team. Holmes will continue to hold down the defensive specialist position with Ogolla starting the year at the setter position. Schirmer and Villagomez will play at the outside hitter position, while Mendoza will play the middle hitter position.

Sophomores Lindsey Wallach and Katie Kulow will add energy and determination to the Lady Bulldogs. Wallach will play both the defensive specialist and libero positions. Kulow will be a defensive specialist, while also helping Ogolla at the setter position.

Hutchison and Sharon Green come in as the lone freshmen on the team, but bring exciting play to the court. Hutchison will start as a freshman playing both the middle and outside hitter positions.

This year’s team represents four states (California, Texas, Missouri and Tennessee) and two countries (United States and Kenya).

With the addition of all the incoming talent, Union looks to continue having a competitive team each time they step onto the court. The Lady Bulldogs are rebuilding, however Coach Gream has a confident outlook for the 2005 season, stating that these girls can “flat out play.”

Non-Conference Opponents

NAIA Champions of CharacterThe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The

program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

Champions of Character is a program of the NAIA designed to promote character development in youth and change the culture of sport.

The NAIA developed the Champions of Character program in response to the growing problem of deteriorating standards of integrity in sports and society. At a time when all of sport has experienced increasingly abhorrent behavior by athletes, coaches, fans and parents, NAIA Champions of Character raises the standards for positive youth development in athletics and academics.

The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. Now our core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program.

The NAIA sees a tremendous need to supplement character development in younger students from the elementary through high school level. Lessons on character and integrity through sports are a natural extension of classroom learning.

UNION UNIVERSITY NAIA & Opponent Info.NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs.

With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis.

The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24 separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.

For more information on the NAIA, visit their web site at www.naia.org.
