HLPTA's Official Response

1. Good Things About the Community

The Hacienda/La Puente Community has residents that have lived locally and attended our

schools for generations with many becoming employees of this district. This community is

diverse economically, ethnically, linguistically, and in age. The diversity is represented by

several advocates who provide voice to important concerns, issues, and things to celebrate

happening in and around the community and school district. When engaged, the

Hacienda/La Puente Community turns out to support HLPUSD and each school site. One

big positive about this community is the energy available to be tapped into so we can all

move forward together building stronger institutions that are increasingly more representative

and beneficial to our students.

2. Good Things About the District

Hacienda La Puente USD has a community of educators that are deeply committed to the

success of all students and are passionately willing to advocate for students, families, and

staff. HLPUSD has been transitioning over the years to a model for labor-management

relations, knowing we can make better decisions and accomplish more together when

professional voices are respected and included. This district has been evolving over the years

to engage guardians of students and community leaders to address challenges and achieve

greater outcomes. It is a good thing that the district and community acknowledge there is

more work to do, but we will get there together. The staff of this district, certificated and

classified, are committed because many grew up and attended schools, lived in this area, or

specifically chose to work for this district.

HLPUSD is financially strong and has been determined to spend money to invest in students'

learning environments and opportunities, professional staff, and making schools safer.

HLPUSD reflects the diversity of our community and builds programs to meet the needs of

students. From the amazing Child Development and Adult Ed programs to our PreK-12

schools, along with our specialty offerings in advanced classes, special education, Career

Tech Ed (CTE), New Pedagogies for Deeper Learning (highlighted worldwide), STEAM,

Robotics, and so many more!

Our nursing staff, speech language pathologists, psychologists, and support staff are some of

the best, most committed professionals.

HLPUSD does amazing work with our foster youth!

Classified staff are awesome: bus drivers, custodial, secretaries, food service, and more...

they tend to have long histories with the district and want the best for students and families.

Annie Bui as our CBO has been key to HLPUSD staying financially sound and helping the

district survive stormy waters.

3. What should the candidate know before coming to Hacienda La Puente?

The district is a labor-management district that has been transitioning for years to embed this

systemically to last beyond different changes of leadership on the labor and management

sides. Under previous leadership, there has been a culture of distrust from administrators to

district leaders, lack of accountability, disrespect of professional staff, lack of transparency

and communication, as well as an entrenched culture in management to distrust labor and

vice versa.

The community has cyclical economic issues that impact our students and families. There

are related challenges of gangs which can spill onto our campuses. There are leaders in the

community and within our staff that are dedicated to working together to address these

challenges.

HLPUSD has a very weak HR department that continues to fight against the will of the

Board and Superintendent which is emphasized because the Asst. Sup. of HR is also the

public information officer. The staff, labor organizations, and community feel a huge lack of

communication, process, and humanity from HR. The current Asst. Sup. of HR is stuck in

the former world of just give directives and expect people to fall in line and do. That does

not fit the culture of HLPUSD and continues to create roadblocks to moving forward.

There have long been questions of equity within our district from the south Hacienda Heights

side to the north La Puente side. Rather than engaging in honest dialogue, the district will

continuously deny it leading the community & staff and the district to talk past each other.

HLPUSD has educators that are willing to follow strong leaders committed to a vision they

can articulate and be willing to be accountable to.

4. What are the attributes, characteristics and traits you want from your superintendent?

The next superintendent should work to create a clear vision and mission to achieve it with

the board and staff. The person must be able to articulate their vision, be transparent, and

have the ability to communicate to different stakeholder groups (students, guardians,

community leaders, labor, and management). The person should have an understanding of

how to ensure equity, celebrate diversity, bring stakeholders together, and empower people.

The individual should seek to see and include staff as professionals in their specific roles

while respecting the value of the labor associations in the district to act on behalf of our

membership. The next superintendent must be committed to continuing to expand and

deepen our labor-management relationships. The person should have experience and a

history of working with labor associations, HLPUSD has been part of TURN (Teachers

Union Reform Network) and LMI (Labor Management Initiative) for years. We have been

seen as a model in many ways with district leaders and HLPTA presenting together at these

conferences.

The next superintendent should see all of our students for their potential and our community

as partners to achieve. The person must respect the history and culture of the community

while acknowledging changing demographics.

• Pay more attention to the needs of different ethnic groups! Chinese parents attach great

importance to their children ’s education and are willing to participate in various

meetings and discussions in the school district and school. However, some parents will

suffer from language problems, and even if they do not know the meaning and purpose of

the meeting, it is inevitable that the Chinese attendance rate will be low. Situation! It is

best if there is a Chinese-language interpreter in both large and small meetings. In

addition, if parents of Chinese origin in school districts can be organized into different

groups, either by school or by the age of children, it will be helpful to help parents

cooperate with the teaching of the school district and school. Help to promote children's

learning progress!

across the community.

• Our community has a deep and connected history to our school and district.

• Safe community and multicultural

• Our community is a family and extremely supportive of the school (La Puente HS).

There is a rich ancestry that prides itself in the 105 year traditions of the school. We have

a very loyal and committed group of families that continue to support the campus even

though their students have graduated and moved onto higher education or their careers.

There is also a very high sense of "giving back" where many of our staff members and

community partners are graduates of the school. This would include our Principal.

• Diverse, involved, and supportive

• The community is united and informed.

• Lots of tradition and families that care.

and simply lie at times.

• More and more planned efforts to creating a positive community through feedback from

all or a variety of stakeholders. Social Emotional Well-being is emphasized and used

more and more as core and foundation for both students and adults. Leadership is

positive, supportive, and inspiring.

• The Hacienda La Puente Adult Schools are very accessible, friendly and dedicated staff,

supportive of it.

• Teachers work hard, dedicated

• Some of the best in the state and in the U.S. We produce highly competitive students that

also care deeply for their communities. Students are college and career ready when they

finish their education in our district.

• The schools have very dedicated staff at every level. From our custodians to teaching

staff to administration and everywhere in between, HLPUSD staff cares. The teacher

association also deeply cares about students, their community, and the teaching staff.

Because they get along better than most, this characteristic is what makes our schools,

our district, outstanding. I would hope that the new superintendent is excited about

working with all the unions within the district because in the end, we all care.

• We have kind teachers and staff that really care about the students.

• Teachers work extremely hard to meet the needs of our students, both academically and

mentally.

• Workman is a small school where students and teachers look out for one another. I have

been at Workman for 13 years and I have come to appreciate how well we all look out for

one another.

• Our teachers receive a fair wage, and consequently work tirelessly for our district.

• The staff/ teachers are very professional. We've been trying very hard to help our

community.

• Career Technical Education (CTE) has made some wonderful progress by hiring TOSA's,

defining clearer pathways at the high schools, and securing many grants to fund and

support those pathways. HLPUSD really needs to have a specified CTE Coordinator or

Director to help keep the positive momentum going in the district.. How will the new

superintendent support what is currently in place for CTE and what would be their vision

for CTE into the future?

• Our school has a lot of choices for children to be challenged with, ie, robotics, steam, DI,

etc.

• Close relationships with parents. Some teachers live in the community.

• Our schools are full of quality people who care very much about our students and

community. They are also full of stakeholders who have been serving our schools for

many years, and caring professionals from outside the community who want to see it

thrive. Both go out of their way to make programs and learning experiences that not only

enrich the lives of students, but build the communities where they live.

• Small school/class sized ensure quality individual education for all students.

• I attended HLPUSD schools and enjoyed the teachers and their variety of teaching styles

and interaction with students.

• Same as above in number 1.

• We have kind teachers and staff that really care about the students.

• Committed to students and to their academics. Always finding the best programs or

resources that will meet students needs.

• Our K-5 TEACHERS and staff are completely dedicated to wanting every child to

succeed and to assure that every child receives what they need...no matter who is making

the decisions. These teachers and staff persevere year after year, even with changes in

leadership (and adjusting to that.) The students all want an inviting, fun and enjoyable,

and opportunistic learning environment.

• Schools are virtually operating and reaching out to students and their families. Teachers

are trying to promote the best learning opportunities considering the circumstances.

• Dedicated principal and teachers

awareness.

• Students are hungry for a 2nd home.

• We have really hard working, caring teachers who go above and beyond their contract

duties, time and requirements to give to our students, families, and schools.

• The best things in our schools aren't things. The best thing in our schools is our human

capital and their capacity to make schools about more than just knowledge or experience.

In our school you'll find current teaching, engaging, character development, skill

acquisition and application, fostering creativity, nurturing expression, and cultivating

growth until schools are hubs that bind the community together.

33

• The principal has begun to shift the climate of our school. Parents feel they are more

informed about what is happening at the administrative level and they feel more

respected.

• The students and parents. The students and parents instill automatic trust with the

educators and district. The ability that our parents engage when subjects are presented in

a cultural sensitive and competent manner.

• Schools are filled with staff who care and go above and beyond.

• Supporting our kids and adult students is a priority. The free food helps thousands of

kids. How all the schools are involved in the community

• Adult education is amazing.

• My school works above and beyond so our students get the best learning experience. All

our teachers work hard to have to make sure that students meet grade level. Our parents

although can be a handful at times with their demands, there are good amount of parents

that are supportive and help us teachers out.

• The staff loves what they do and love the students as their own kids.

• Caring teachers and staff.

• Hard working teachers, many programs offered, high academic achievement

• Our school focuses a lot on the Arts. Students. are proud of their school and want to

achieve. The teachers are extremely proud of their school and love their job and their

students. They love to show their talents to all.

• Caring & qualified staff, well paid.

• My school recognizes hard work, improvement, and character traits. It is a cornerstone

for the families in the neighborhood.

• District provides a lot of training throughout year for teachers. Good parent support at

some schools but could be a little better.

• Dedicated teachers and support staff.

• Dedicated teachers, secretaries, clerks, librarians, and custodians.

• All schools in the district work together and support one another. A lot of our community

attends the adult school after graduation for their career programs. We provide meals to

our students. The adult school provides services to the community.

• Teachers really care about their students. I can speak for adult ed. No student left

behind. Additional effort is given to students needing help. Our students are a reflection

of our teaching.

What issues should the superintendent be aware of as he/she comes into the district? (This

information is shared with the final candidates.)

• Safety of children and staff

• Bad leadership at schools and inexperience leadership. Families and students need a lot of

services.

• Departments need to be integrated and work together more efficiently.

• How important Head start and preschool programs are for our community

• There is need to service the ELs better and also students with IEPs. Additionally, there

should be more equity among all school sites. There should also be more support for free

field trips opportunities (including busing), more relevant professional development for

teachers and more community involvement.

Page 35: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

34

• Our union is strong

• The amount of money spent on conferences The amount of money spent on buying food

for meetings Hiring more administrative staff but reducing the amount of support staff

The amount of people leaving the district due to the way they are being treated Lack of

mental health support for students. There are no counselors in the elementary schools

Counselors have more of a 500:1 student/counselor ratio instead of the suggested 250:1

which doesn't provide enough support for students Reactive approach instead of

proactive No accountability

• This is a fiscally sound district. Which looks after the aspects of all students and district

employees.

• The issue with having the La Puente and Hacienda Heights "sides" and how it seems to

be tension and sometimes perceived preferential treatment.

• Our school Sunset is very old and needs repairs, the school is not well kept up or kept

clean. Come and see for yourself.

• Over the past many years, our District has lost a lot of excellent home-grown talent

because they weren't being treated as professionals in their field. We were a district that

had a strong sense of community and led surrounding districts in many areas.

• We need more Dual programs to attract divers learners to help prevent pupil decline in

our district.

• I think the superintendent should have some knowledge of different Early Primary

programs offered in our district.

• In certain situations, there seems to be an inequity among schools. Our school is

struggling with a deficit of teachers in core classes, such as the English department. In

order to make our students successful, WE NEED EXPERIENCED TEACHERS.

• CTE high school teachers are being treated unequal in comparison to other teachers. CTE

teachers teach six periods without prep-time and have all expectations as any other

teachers on campus. CTE classes are still required for students to earn credit and

graduate. CTE teachers are certificated credentialed teachers who teach courses that

students need to earn in order to graduate. CTE teachers should have the same

opportunity of salary schedule and employee work contract.

• The equity issues within the district.

• strength the human resources/district office staff and board members

• Parental support and involvement is lacking in la puente The la puente community often

feels left out or disregarded as it seems the heights school often get better treatment,

better technology and support over all. Our Latino population often feels

underrepresented and neglected. Parents and families are reluctant to speak up,

especially those no documented

• Our district is lacking proper community. Teacher at times are the last to know what is

happening in the district. Our new superintendent needs to be open to all our school. Be

known and make connections as well with their staff, communities, and with the students.

Kids should know who the superintendent is.

• The biggest issue is definitely the achievement gap between are two largest subgroups,

Asian and Latino.

• How are they going to support the Teacher’s in our district? How are they are going to

reach out to families and student’s in the time of their needs? How are they going to

Page 36: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

35

continue to help build on the student’s education? Do they have resources that families

can use to help with there needs?

• Growing the Dual Language Immersion Program. Representation at the board level be

representative of different community areas in our district. Create greater cohesion

between quad areas in the district. Looking for and researching a new Social Emotional

Learning curriculum for our children and teachers. Providing more funding or allocating

more resources to struggling schools. Attracting more students to our district including

the Dual Language Immersion program. Allocating or secure greater funding for

counseling services to assist students with social/emotional/psychological needs. Update

school libraries physical and online libraries. Increase support of training teachers in

reading intervention strategies for struggling learners. Providing school staff with

training in trauma teaching/trauma learning. Outdated discipline plan--Needs to be

current with current research and best practices. This is as a consequence of an outdated

Social Emotional Learning Program. Teacher Trainings--Secure trainings informed by

current research on best practices and leaders in the field. Increase networking between

elementary schools and institutions of higher learning (ie. universities can be a great

resource to guide schools in adoption of science curriculum or any curriculum for

example.) Research and look for ELD programs that demonstrate based on

quantitative/qualitative data that help ELL students show growth in English. (Current

program may not be providing the support needed).

• Often times it's difficult for science teachers to get funding for class and lab supplies.

When there is funding it's usually very limited and takes a long time to go through the

system. So if I see a great idea online and want to try it next month, it's very unlikely that

I'll get funding in time to support that great teaching idea.

• All decisions need to be centered around what’s best for the kids, whether financial,

academic, or extracurricular.

• Special education is under attacked by greedy lawyers and advocates. Parents were

informed with incorrect information by the greed lawyers and advocates.

• Be Present! Needs to understand education. Experienced teacher. Has complete

knowledge of students with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, high

functioning autism, know what an IEP should involve and don’t short change the student.

Be transparent. No previous fraud history.

• two different issues for two separate areas in our school district (difference in

socioeconomic situation)

• To make school better for children, support families and staff

• We need to bolster our support for CTE programs and ensure they not only have the

materials, but the space to truly serve their students. As the future continues to change

rapidly our CTE programs are

• Making sure that are students are treated fair.

• Adult Education is often misunderstood as an offering of drawing, pottery and other

pursuits that one enjoys in retirement. HLP adult ed is the second largest in California

next to LAUSD and provides services for thousands of people in continuing education

including ESL, Citizenship, Parent Education, Career and Technical Education, and

work/learning programs for people with disabilities. We need leadership that will be

knowledgeable and invested in maintaining and growing the AE programs to meet

growing demands in communities served.

Page 37: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

36

• The superintendent needs to be aware of the educational needs of the community as well

as the socioeconomic level of the students involved. Assist student's need to learn,

achieve, overcome and succeed. Listen to parents' needs, work directly with the

community, be accessible to all. Support the staff and listen and assist them to meet their

needs. Understanding that not everyone will be happy, try to work with all to have a

harmonious working relationship with the community, staff and students.

• the building of collaborative relationships, setting a clear vision, rallying all staff, and

create a working environment that promotes respect.

• Protocol and the zero tolerance rule

• School campuses are old and out of date.

• A commitment to supporting Teachers in the classroom ! Something lacking in all

communities in this era I suspect ( and have witnessed ! ) .

• That the board needs to better understand what the classroom teacher needs. That not all

schools have equitable performance spaces. The district is severely lacking in technical

education opportunities. There was an outrageously slow/delayed response to the school

closure, and instructions to faculty/staff.

• There are 'haves' and 'have nots'. North side is mostly very different in educational

background than South. ALL kids deserve to get ahead, regardless of their economics and

background. All parents' views may be valid.

• I would want our superintendent to know that our community has missed a hands on

authority for quite some time. Not since have we seen any interest in our community

from a superintendent. Since 2013, most teachers, students, or parents couldn’t even tell

you the name of our superintendent. We need a leader who knows the people they will be

serving.

• Equity has become an issue within the community and this has been divisive. Groups

with different interests have formed and developed active campaigns against one another.

• The district needs special education to have more uniformity. Currently the high schools

can improve how they write goals, plops, and monitor progress.

• I feel there needs to be more equality in our school district . Why are schools in the

hacienda heights area kept and provided more resources .

• How the businesses in the area are tide into the education of our students.

• Academic vision Building teacher capacity Building a community of togetherness

through a united approach to the overall district's vision of academics and building the

whole child

• There is some division in thinking. We need fresh ideas, better leadership

• Unfortunately, their are some issues as one side of the district getting more attention than

the other. Some people believe that one side of the district is dangerous, but that is not

true. The entire district has issues that deal with outside sources.

• The safety protocols at each school needs to be clarified as to shooters, lock downs .

Teachers do not feel safe dependent upon situation there is no clear directive.

• People obeying traffic laws is a problem, even though it isn't educationally-related. I

think that the district is continuously evolving even given the current health concern.

Voting rights for all is another, I guess.

• Be aware and provide all students in all schools equal academic opportunities

Page 38: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

37

• Too many classes are too large. Some teachers have over 180 students, while others have

100.

• English is a second language for many parents and students. The La Puente side of the

district is under represented but also the highest need.

• None that I can think of

• The lack of support/decision making from the board during the COVID 19 school

closures. That teachers are generally dissatisfied because we do not feel that there is

anyone at the top with classroom experience who understands our needs. There is a

disproportionate racial make-up at certain high schools, that leads to favoritism from the

board. we are losing students to outside districts because there are few/no programs with

training opportunities (auto shop, agriculture, culinary arts, etc.) at our high schools, nor

are the students provided with laptops.

• 1. There has been a decline in district leadership attendance at various VAPA events

across the district. 2. There is a lack of organization, across the district, with various

VAPA departments, with individual teachers being responsible for organization,

communication, and funding. 3. With these trying times regarding funding,

transportation is a nightmare from the sites perspective: widely varying rates, limited

options, limited access, funding inadequacies. 4. This district, seems to have K-8-

focused tenancies, that cause K-8 sites to not have the vision for the big picture. Support,

from district, seems to lack for the high schools with regards to planning, instruction,

facilities, and curriculum alignment because they seem so focused on K-8.

• The teachers are not respected or compensated as much as they should be by the board.

• The dysfunctional nature of the those that are in charge at the DO, they work for

themselves and not the schools they serve. They are far out of touch and have forgotten

what is it to be a teacher.

• During this pandemic, classes should be kept cleaner and all bathrooms (disinfected) .

• An important asset for anyone in position of leadership is empathy and compassion. To

possess this way of being, any leader will be able to look at any issue or challenge with

the eyes and heart of the collective and individuals. Our district is not so very different

from others. We have different socioeconomic levels--How do you ensure meaningful

learning for all groups of students? We have families of different culture, background,

etc. How do we serve students that come with their own experiences and truths? How

does a district build a true active communication/collaboration with families and homes

so that every member can feel heard and cared for?

• Adult Education is a needed and helpful community resource that should not be

overlooked or undervalued. Students looking to advance in their careers as well as

complete their education need these resources.

• Our district is big and there is a wide span of needs within the quadrants.

• The classrooms need updating. Most classrooms are original 1950's and students have

been unkind to the classroom lab tables for decades.

• Learning gaps between asian and hispanics. Lack of CTE courses at the high schools that

support fields other than STEAM. Perceived mistrust of certain groups of leadership and

hidden agendas.

• We need someone who has a vision to help all schools move forward and become

modernized and healthy environments. We need someone who understands and supports

the diverse communities equally.

Page 39: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

38

• Previous toxic culture (fear, control, micromanaging) Two consecutive bond fiascos may

hinder ability to get community trust failing school infrastructure is already a major

problem on most campuses and is only going to get worse.

• Low socioeconomic population.

• there is a varied and diverse population across the district with varying needs. we have

low performing students with tough situations that prevent their success in school, but we

also have high achieving higher socio-economic students. they all need support in

varying degrees to continue to be successful and have services offered and available to

them to address their specific needs.

• Trust issues, admin have taken advantage of teachers who did not get permanent

positions for many years, teachers are still teaching combo classes to save money but

impact on student learning severely compromised, teachers get overloaded with new

programs to implement

• The treatment of teachers. Working with the teachers union for equity. Being transparent

regarding issues as they arise.

• The district and the teachers' association have had a fairly strong working relationship

that includes much respect. It is my expectation that an incoming superintendent is not

only open, but welcoming and excited about working with our associations. It is my

expectation that a superintendent will want to get to know all areas of the district, the

different communities.

• It would be nice if the superintendent has years of experience in the classroom so she/he

can see how challenging it is to be a teacher.

• The need for Academic TOSAs at all sites district funded. We also need full time

counselors at all sites...later sites may need more.

• Spanish speaking community Parents need an organization where they could learn and

help them to understand what their children are doing and learning. They need to have

tools to help their children.

• There are technology and language barriers that prevent parents from being fully

engaged. Some parents are not as involved due to immigration status. When the District

goes to a digital platform to push out information to parents, many will not receive it and

some will be unable to read it due to their lack of education. Many children serve as the

"bridge" between home and school. Although parents are supportive of the idea of their

child getting a good education, it is often not supported after school hours due to work

and family situations. Sometimes the priorities of parents defeat the incentive of the child

to do well academically.

• She or he should make the equal distribution of resources and educational opportunities

throughout the district a priority.

• all of our district kids and families come from all sorts of backgrounds and economic

levels. I hope that the superintendent understands how different all of his/her students are

across the district. there is a huge difference from one side of the district to the other.

• Discipline is a major issue impacting academic success. While this is true throughout the

state and nation, that does not mean that this is an issue that should not receive the

highest priority in the district. One student with issues can disrupt the education of an

entire class, and that must be stopped. Additionally our facilities are outdated and

dilapidated. They must be renovated. Our district needs to expand and improve SPED

services.

Page 40: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

39

• Most adult school teachers don't have permanent positions, and it is hard to recruit good

teachers. Especially, we need more teachers who can teach online at this difficult time.

• Career Technical Education is a critical component of a broad and deep school

curriculum that helps prepare all students to be career and college ready. How will the

new superintendent support meeting LEA district LCAP requirements of: Conditions Of

Learning, Pupil Outcomes, Engagement, College and Career Readiness and Success, and

Professional State Leadership in CTE as it relates to Career Technical Education in

HLPUSD?

• There is a lack of equity in our high schools, in particular WoHS. We have struggled to

get our students to attend WoHS when WCHS is equally close and offers so many more

programs than WoHS. We need to be able to compete with other districts if we want to

keep our students.

• Recovery from Covid, of course. Support for certificated, classified and community as all

need to work together.

• There are many conflicting agendas within the district office, and quite often they are

disconnected from the schools or communities they serve. While public education strives

for equality and equity, far too often a "quick fix" or "one-size-fits-all" solution is

implemented without thoroughly thinking out the nuisance and repercussions rippling

across diverse school sites.

• Facilities need a major upgrade.

• #1 - Our declining enrollment issue. Hopefully, the superintendent can bring in "out-of-

the-box" strategies to help address this.

• Updating our virtual learning strategies. In case of another pandemic or if this pandemic

is extended into next school year.

• It would be nice if the superintendent has years of experience in the classroom so she/he

can see how challenging it is to be a teacher.

• Teachers take on a lot of work, there is no need to add to teachers workload. We want

equality across the District.

• Students at our schools should all have the same opportunities to succeed and learn. If

one student has an opportunity, then ALL students should have an opportunity.

Administrators should all be held to the same standard of leadership. Employees should

be treated equally at all sites, and should not be subjected to the "discretion" of the

leaders opinions and directives. For that matter, it should not be allowed. Too much

time is spent by too many people dealing with issues that should have been allowed to

arise in the first place. It creates undue stress to all involved and takes away time from

proper teaching (and leading) for our students. Consistency across the board. If one

teacher is being held accountable for something, then all teachers should be held

accountable (to a certain extent) And, if teachers are held accountable, then proper

training and follow through should be required by the district and admins. Teachers

should be given the opportunity to make suggestions on what their school community

needs when it comes to the leadership of the school. Especially when a school has a high

turnover of admins. Teachers/staff need to have an anonymous opportunity (yearly) to

suggest or comment on student/school needs and/or concerns that have arisen throughout

the school year. Yes, many teachers and staff may be opinionated and it would be

somewhat subjective, but many facts are facts, and some may need to be addressed.

Schools should be inviting from the outside. Every one of them. If an admin. is

Page 41: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

40

being assigned to a school, they should WANT to be there in that environment. Not just

sent there. The admins assigned should be WILLING and able to take on all of the

responsibilities of that school, no matter how long they may or may not be there.

• Some families are still struggling with technology, being a lack of device, high-speed

internet, or the necessary skills to utilize their device. Communication will be difficult.

Many teachers also lack the skillset to operate online learning with confidence.

• How corrupt the last Sup and the Board are. How fed up the staff and community are!

• The superintendent should definitely be aware that her/his presence is welcome at all

school sites. She/He should be encouraged to visit and make strong connections with all

school staff.

• To balance the needs from different areas of our district. The needs change from one side

of the freeway to the other.

• The board has not always been transparent with their stakeholders. There HAS to be

100% transparency in order to gain the trust and respect for this position.

• The superintendent should be familiar with the history of the district, the geography of

the communities, the demographics of each school, the programs in place, and the

current tensions and their causes between stakeholders.

• There is a severe lack of resources and training provided to teachers with regard to

special education. Because of this, there are likely significant liabilities with regards to

IEP compliance. General education teachers ask for help, special education teachers ask

for help, school site administrators ask for help but the special education office provides

no quality special education training or support.

• Being culturally And social -economical competent regarding the community of La

Puente. Be realistic and understand that schools , students, parents , and community

writhing La Puente are not represented equitable fashion in comparison to schools within

Hacienda Heights due to the differences of ethic and social- economic demographics. It

is time for HLPUSD to recruit a positive Latino male superintended who speaks fluent

Spanish. To reflect and represent the majority of the community. This will increase

student and parent participation among community events within schools i.e. ELAC/SSC,

open house, back to school nights, parent conferences. In addition , student mental health

must be a priority. student’s mental health must and well being must be supported the

student will engage and flourish within their academic setting. Students within the City of

La Puente have experience intense trauma.

• Some schools are badly funded and badly led. There is a discrepancy within the schools

in the district.

• To not dismantle our schools. Many superintendents are other districts have destroyed

their districts.

• None that I know of.

• Issues that should be aware that sometimes our district makes decisions without teacher

input. Therefore, our Union tends to step in to make sure that the District doesnt over

step. Also, our district leaves things at last minute example last minute closure of our

school due to COVID. I feel that this could’ve been handled different without being

rushed that Friday we were told that we werent coming back.

• There is a Segment of the community that is always negative and wanting to tear down

everything we do that is good. We are working to change a culture of "stay in your lane"

and no accountability in management.

District, be transparent and communicate with all stakeholders. At times, it feels teachers

are the last to find out anything going on in the district. Although there is a certain

formula to calculate school staffing, there are many sites that need more staff in order to

alleviate some of the oversized classes. (Example 41 students in a lab room that has room

for 34 students is not ideal)

• Be familar of the needs of our 2nd language learners.

to everyone's input before making a decision, like a democracy The new superintendent

district. In the past we have seen too much one sided tactics that have benefitted only the

most vocal members of our community. We need someone who understands the

dynamics of all differing micro-communities within our district.

• The new Superintendent must possess excellent communication and skills and be a

supreme diplomat in order to unite the district in common goals around serving ALL

students. Equity and access to the services that ALL students need must be a primary goal

and communicating this well to all stakeholders will ensure success.

• The skills needed are being able to check in with schools. The ability to negotiate, but

demand uniformity. Don't be afraid to tackle sensitive issues straight on, so long as you

do so respectfully and trustworthy.

• They have to be an educator not a business person trying to make money off our school

district . They need to be willing to invest in our schools ,and willing support the low

elementary .

duty coverage .

• The new person has to realize that this job is time-consuming and constantly decision-

making. I don't know how just anyone could do it. The hours are tremendous.

• Educational background in educational studies. And teaching and administrative K-12

experience. A willingness to be open to suggestions from the community and staff.

• Forward thinker. Education needs to change. We need less pacing guides and spend

teachers and employees.

• background educator, common sense, leadership

keep this district thriving and succeeding. Communication has been hasty, and not well

good reputation among prior jobs held in other districts. Understands the community

climate of HLPUSD. Making decisions for the good of all stakeholders. Being a leader-

making decisions and not waiting to "see" what other districts are doing.

• They must be open-minded. By this, I mean open to working with associations, open to

visiting campuses near and far (superintendents RARELY come to my school). I also feel

that he/she should have had some experience in working in a classroom. I understand that

being a superintendent is also a business-minded position, but I think classroom

experience should be a must.

46

• Empathy, considerate, proactive, good problem solver,

• Family minded...NOT BUSINESS! The new superintendent needs to be visible, cow into

like we matter!

• Understands what it is like to be a teacher. Communicate well with teachers and all other

staff Have the students best interest at all times

• It would be beneficial to understand the cultural background of the majority of the

students. The area demographics are changing though, so it would be good to be bilingual

so families feel they are understood by the decision makers.

• The candidate must reflect and represent the demographic and nature of the community.

The ideal thing would be for the candidate to be someone who grew up in the

community. Not an outsider. Someone who knows and is part of this great community.

Someone who really cares, and not just some outsider bureaucrat.

• Always look out for students and their families work well with all people he/she is

serving depend on staff and get to know them speak more than one language, preferably

Spanish also

• This new superintendent must be approachable, and able to work with board members

and teachers . They MUST have ethical values. I would also suggest recruiting one of our

own. While she may not want to leave her current position, our district is closer to her

home and she has proved herself in our district as having the qualities we need to bring

our district to where it needs to be.

• Caring, loving, and understand the culture of our district.

• EMPATHY and COMPASSION for families of all socio economic backgrounds. A

DESIRE to want to move forward and not stay stagnant. FLEXIBILITY in

with very unique needs.

• Managerial, leadership, integrity.

• Transparent in decision-making. Caring and empathetic towards all stakeholders.

Strategic and goal oriented.

• Some one willing to listen to all stakeholders and do what's right for the students and

difficult decisions even in the face of public and/or union criticism.

• DON'T BE AN ARROGANT MICROMANAGER LEADER!!!!! Listen to our teachers

cultural diversity from cultural differences and empathy from sympathy, the strength to

be transparent even when it is not the best news, a "tough chin", a big and warm heart

• The community needs someone who will be present in meeting the needs to survive

COVID-19 and yet also have a plan to deal with the mental and academic challenges of

the aftermath. We need to provide our senior exiting students a fighting chance with

CTE vocational skills (as their plan A or B) as they spill into a new world (post COVID-

19) and most likely a distressed economy for many years.

• The superintendent needs to understand that they represent the district and every

stakeholder within the district. This is not a dictatorship. They need to drive their decision

making based on the best interest of the community, teachers, and students and not their

own personal interests!

• The best superintendent candidate will have significant experience as a classroom

educator. They will be professional, fair, knowledgeable. They will be great listeners.

They will be empathetic. They will be focused on the whole well being and development

of students as life- long learners, critical thinkers, and contributors to society. The

superintendent will be responsible and reliable. They will build relationships and trust.

They will be peace keepers. They will believe in team input. They will be decision

makers that make the hard decisions always in the best interest of students, families, and

educators rather than money or politics.

• To be successful here the superintendent should have the ability to cut through the noise

and see the root of problems. Focus on student success. Get to know your educators and

staff below management. You have some much-wasted talent ready to lead with you. Be

prepared to have difficult conversations and really look at leaders imbedded in "how

things have always been done". Also look at recent payouts (3-5 years), students, or

employment. Who caused this? Why are we wasting money paying out settlements? Fix

the problems. Treat employees fairly and with respect, work with unions, be transparent,

and don't be afraid to shake things up. Students and educators are depending on you.

• FLUENT IN SPANISH is a must to be culturally competent and transparent with the

majority of the community that HLPUSD represents. A individual that understands that

mental health is vital for the social , emotional , and academic well-being of the students.

A background in psychology and socially. A background in counseling. Empathic and

supportive of educators needs. Have a philosophy that educators need to be taken care of

in order for our students to be taken care of. Supportive and open door policy philosophy.

Genuine , supportive , open minded ,& team player. A graduate /product from HLPUSD

preferably from La Puente schools. Recruit a example of a former student to instill a

image to the students and families that student products of HLPUSD are successful.

• I think the new superintendent should be equally concerned with the management of all

the schools but would need to look closer at the schools where the neighborhood may not

look as nice as the others.

part of it.

• Trustworthy, proactive, kind, hard working, teaching experience.

• Experienced in education, have students interest at heart, Team player, professional, and

committed to public education.

• At least 15 years teaching experience, less administrative experience, unless stellar

• The new superintendent needs to be a clear communicator. He/she needs to recognize our

district’s diversity and the limitless potential of our students.

• Best intentions are with the kids and their well being. Experience being superintendent in

a large district. Kind, honest, transparent

• Bilingual, an educator first, willing to honor all programs at schools. Approachable and

professional characteristics are a must.

• The superintendent should have experience in education not law or accounting. This

person must be dedicated to building an academic district for all students.

• They should have a Career and Technical Education background. Be a teacher previously

to understand what it takes being a teacher. Understand the importance of the adult

school and the programs they offer. Keep our district like the extended family it is. They

shouldn’t be in the position for the money. They should not want to dismantle everything.

We don’t want someone from a district that has done nothing but negative things to it. I

would ask the HLPTA board about their opinion of each candidates background and what

good things or bad things they have done at their current district.

• Must have the ability to truly listen, understand our students, the diversity of the

community and be truthful to the community, schools, and staff. Work well with staff

and never form judgements until all facts are on.

think the HLP Community is a tough crowd. Some only here what they want to hear, and

not what is being said. It is a very diverse community. With very different opinions.

HLPMOVEMENT, READER BOARDS

• It has changed over the decades from mostly caucasian and Hispanic in the early 70's to

mostly Asian and Hispanic now. It was a youth sports minded community, with baseball,

softball, soccer and basketball utilizing school properties. That has been a lost attraction

with recent property sales.

• A Diverse community

Tell us the good things about your schools. (This information is used to help us recruit

quality candidates.)

• Again these schools have great teachers but they need the right tools to make it even

better for the student

• Quality classified staff

• We are focused on making sure kids enjoy coming to school.

• They have improved a lot overall. The schools on the La Puente side were, at one time,

overlooked and not given good equipment and teachers. However, this has changed and

all schools are treated the same and test scores have gone up significantly.

• My school is one of the elementary schools in the La Puente quad. It is the friendliest

school of all schools in HLPUSD. The whole staff (classified and certificated) work

together as a team and there is great camaraderie in supporting each other and most of all

our students and parents. The office manager is the most welcoming and friendly office

manager in all of HLPUSD; students, parents, teachers, district TOSAs, and other district

employees always mention they love visiting our school because the office manager is a

great representation and reflection of what our district should be. She is the only one who

works in the office. She represents the hope of what HLPUSD should be - integrity, trust,

and acceptance to all. After you receive a welcoming visit from her, you then see a

continuation of great service from the teachers, custodian, cafeteria workers, instructional

aide, and site-supervision aides. This has been happening for the last 6 years at this

school regardless of administrator/principal.

• Staff were working hard on it its appearance Lakeshore recreating updated classrooms

Laptops were students.

• Staff very good classified.

• N/A

• dont konw much about the local schools, some are more competitve than others, and that

not all the elementary or middle schools are desired by the local parents/residents for

their kids; but overall i heard that all high schools are doing pretty good.

• Every year the education is better and the aesthetic has Extremely Beautified.

• Committed teachers & admin. Interest in making sure all students are learning and being

reached.

• The teachers and staff at the schools care about the students and their well being, and will

go above and beyond to make sure students can achieve to the highest of their ability.

That being said, not every parent is going to be happy about every outcome, there are

times when faculty and staff need to know the district has their back, and not always just

side with the parent.

• Clean, advanced, knowledgeable, technology, high standards for the students, outstanding

ratings.

• We have many great teachers willing to go above and beyond for the students. Its all

about our students.

• I believe the District has many dedicated employees, i also feel both

certificated/classified employees do not have a voice in the direction of their particular

school site. Lack of transparency with the Principal and staff.

• Dedicated teachers and staff

• The schools have been safe.

• I am not part of HLPUSD nor do I have children attending But I am aware that Schools

Strive for Excellance In the Education of Students as well as for Students with Learning

Issues & Disabilities.

• support students need nice people

• Our schools/teachers offer the best education to our students,

• Great teachers who work hard to make their subject matter easier to understand and

interesting.

• The schools have good communication with parents

• Can voice concerns & work with school personnel to resolve concern. Maintains

everyone informed if all school activities. Students excel & are recognized for their

accomplishments.

• I believe every employee in the District try their best for the good of the students. Good

Management, Compassionate, the best education they can facilitate for the students.

• My school is responsible with staff, parents and children

• Our schools provide learning communities for our students , staff and community

members by engaging in diverse and innovative lessons .

• Our schools have great teachers and staff that care about their students.

• Dual Immersion Programs, and Technology are better than most school districts, but the

community doesn't understand it.

• The teachers at our schools are dedicated and can facilitate the children's learning.

• The schools are implementing new programs that will help students find the best career

pathway for them. Dispatching, JROTC, etc...

• Our school is a safe environment for our kids. The parents do get involved in any event

that is needed . Our staff our teachers are more like family, our Principal goes out of her

way to help any student, family or staff member that is in need of help

• our schools look forward to creating a learning environment for our future generations.

• At our school teachers and staff really get along, having an administrator that doesn't pass

the buck is essential. Being creative and offering community events to really emphasize

that we are a family group.

• Very few schools in the community have great administrators Valinda, Lassalette, Los

Altos HS, Grazide , and Mesa Robles are quite outstanding schools with a great support

system to their students and parents and mmost importantly their staff.

• our schools are again diverse in culture and promote equality for all children. They

provide resources to accompany a positive learning for environment for both children

and their familes

• Classified employees work harder and think harder then teachers.

• They work for the students and families.

• The schools in the district are involved in a variety of programs and activities that

provide effective learning experiences to the students.

• The La Puente side of the district receives larger sums of money to try and counteract the

poor educational performance of its students while the Hacienda Heights side has a

higher educational outcome due to the demographics of its population.

• The school sites themselves seem to be united and trying to run a quality school.

• Our schools have great staff very dedicated and passionat of what they do every day with

every student and co-workers the refelect in the community.

• Personally, I am very blessed to work at an awesome middle school. Orange Grove has

not only the BEST people, but the Most united bond which includes our current amazing

administrators

• Our schools have a handful of great teachers and staff working together to help our

students be successful citizens

• Great teachers and staff, improvments looking good

• Most schools have great teachers, principals and staff who genuinely care about the

teaching and well being of their students.

• I’ve worked at several school sites within my 22 years with the district and at each school

at least 50% of the teachers actually teach

• High scores on testing, good attendance

• Some schools seem to get more support than others depending on pressure from the

parents to the board. The students north of the 60 frwy are the ones overlooked or

sacrificed when budget is involved.

• Diversity, Staff, Children, Are Welcoming and ready to learn

What issues should the superintendent be aware of as he/she comes into the district? (This

information is shared with the final candidates.)

• She is a mean person and doesn’t care about the students or staff. I’ve seen it personally

• Community and employees do not trust district. Not proactive. History of lawsuits

History of employee fear No trust No family feeling District focuses on Hacienda

Heights instead of la Puente. Perception of racism Low pay for classified

• We need to be more like a team. Classified and certificates is too divided and it shouldn’t

be. We should all be treated the same way. Classified is treated less fairly.

• TO HAVE AN OPEN MIND! No more "My way or the highway" mentality. The

superintendent needs to listen to their principals, teachers and administrators.

• 1) All employees (certificated and classified) have no trust in current interim

superintendent and board members. 2) All employees (certificated and classified) have

no trust in our current board members. They don't lead and listen to the people of the

Page 55: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

54

communities that make up HLPUSD. 3) Morale is low district wide due to the above

mentioned. 4) There are great inconsistencies and inequity district-wide in processes,

policies, full-staffed offices to one-person staff offices, etc. 5) All board members are

being recalled. 6) HLPUSD needs to make a turn-around with employees. Classified

personnel is neglected regardless of praise in letters and speeches - current interim

superintendent neglects to negotiate with classified, yet negotiated with all other unions

(certificated and supervisory).

• Amar back property with mounds of dirt now growing weeds This year allergy symptoms

Were outrageous levels.

• Morale in District is low. HR is not trusted at all.

• To have a clear vision of what the needs to be done for the good of the district

• i've only been an employee of the dristrict for a short time but i've noticed that the

Medical place next door ( Universal Industrial Care ) is a bad place to use. Most of the

employees there dont really know what they're doing and in my particular case took

about 4 hours for a simple drug screen, 2 of which have been waiting and another hour

for the employees ( 4 or 5 ) to figure out exactly how to handle the procedures. Might

be the cheapest option in the area but it's definitely not the BEST or in the AVERAGE of

what a medical doctor work related clinic. I'd recommend looking for a different more

trustworthy and cleaner place. If the new Superintendent or anybody in the HR dept

deals with this place PERSONALLY would know exactly what i'm talking about.

• The gangs in.be the neighborhoods are dangerous

• Continued commitment to represent all demographic segments of the community. Using

finances to promote smaller class sizes, which benefits student learning & now with

presence of Covid-19, further secures the safety of educators and students.

• Currently there is a mutual mistrust between the district and classified employees. I

know that they have to deal with the union in matters of negotiations, but also, the union

is not acting in the best interest of everyone, they have their own agenda and have

alienated a large number of people they "represent". It would be nice for the people who

have opted out of the union to have some sort of connection to the district office without

being tainted by the shenanigans of the union representatives. We are not all uneducated

and ignorant.

• Should be mindful, knowledgeable and flexible to the student’s needs in comparison to

student’s education in other states.

• That our Principals should not be made feel bad or afraid to suspend students for bad

behaviors or have their performance evaluation low for the principals have to suspend

students to show certain things will not be tolerated. (disrespect)

• The blatant inequality that schools/students/staff on the North side of Gale Avenue have

been failed. Example: updating school facilities. ie., classrooms, offices and grounds.

• The importance of classified staff

• That there is a lot of turmoil and how can new superintendent rectify.

• Safety, and the best education of children.

• Please be Inclusive with Emloyees Working with Them NOT Against Them; Making

Sure Administration & Management is in Check & Informef

• encourage diversity in the workforce upgrade office equipments and furniture more

training for workers to be updated with their knowledge including part time employees

added medical supplies to all the school school safety

55

• There will probably be different opinions among school staff and parents,

• The district has a terrible relationship with Classified professionals at HLPUSD. In my

opinion, there is terrible lack of respect from the Administration toward the hard working

classified employees. Are their bad apples? Yes....on every tree....but most classified

employees are hard working individuals who care about our students and the health of the

district. I have worked at several districts and HLPUSD administration is by far the most

unprofessional and dismissive toward their employees. The new Superintendent needs

to be intentional about working collaboratively with classified - as well as certificated

and management.

• Drugs, alcohol, gangs, homelessness, parents not always involved with their children

needs or parents inability to teach life skills to their children.

• Knowing the community and ethnicity

• Take disciplinary action needed for employees who dont do their job. Work together

with Classified board members to achieve goals and new contracts that benefit employees

Not only district.

• We are a good team player if you give us a chance. To treat every School with the same

equality, so you can expect the same.

• He or she needs to care about the needs of the community and work towards getting all

the resources and materials needed in schools

• The incoming superintendent should be aware that some schools are in dire need of

modernization because currently schools still reflect out dated layouts from when they

were originally built that are not functional , hazardous and unsafe for the current societal

climate. Additionally, the superintendent should also be aware of that although the

school district makes every effort to provide equitable learning environments & resources

to every school however, there are still disparities between schools and educational

programs/resources that needs to addressed.

• That some students are not up to there classmates academics and a little extra help can

really help them catch up and excel .

• The CSEA classified employees union is being ran by a bunch of bullies, and does not

represent their people. They are only in it for themselves. Maintenance and

Transportation. 12 month employees are out numbered, and 10 month people are too part

time to care.

• It is a big district and some low income schools may be looked over.

• There have been several admin within the last couple of years that have left our district.

Admin that had dedicated 10 + years to this school district and for some reason decided

to leave. Find it interesting that they loved our district because they group up or started

their teaching career with the district and then decided to leave. This district use to feel

like a family. A family that wanted to see each other grow and succeed. Now it feels like

very one is just looking out for their own. I hope the new supt can bring back the family

feeling were the students, parents and employees feel united. This is a great district just

needs more unity.

• Unsupportive, negative culture. Departments blame other departments, communication

between departments is lacking. This leads to miscommunication and missed deadlines

on important tasks because direction isn't clear or constantly changes.

• He or she should really be aware more on the staff, not staff from the district inside the

building but staff from school sites, as in food service dept, maintenance dept, all of these

Page 57: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

56

workers are treated different than a certified employee. We should all be treated the same

have same opportunities and benefits

• The superintendent should really be a presence in the community and at the schools.

• HLPTA tends to their teachers needs immediately no problems with their contract

negotiations and everything gets handled accordingly yet with CSEA union for the

Classified employees of our district their is always issues because administrators at

district office can’t seem to agree with csea negotiations. It’s a matter that has been

going on for years and it’s relatively disturbing that employees have to be persay

mistreated and have their needs unattended because csea union and hlpusd can’t come to

agreements as quick as they do with teachers union.

• know that we are want a honest hard working leader that looks out for all of our district

community without hidden agendas or false promises

• Classified employees do not feel valued as a certificated employee. Classified are the

backbone of the great district. More appreciation.

• There is a lack of communication between the community and the school district.

• The new superintendent should be aware that Hacienda La Puente School District is a

multicultural community that needs to be acknowledge for their contributions to the

community.

• They must always protect Wedgeworth Elementary from the incursion of non-desirable

students in the surrounding neighborhood.

• The division between school staff and district officials. The control of certain board

members have on district officials. The control catagorical monies Listen to Principals,

Directors about their concerns

• The needs of some schools who need re-pairs that had being posponee over and over e.g.

the air conditional on some classrooms

• We understand that all administrators are different etc. However, since we are all in this

together, and hopefully for the same reason (STUDENTS) we should all stand together

and have one another back!

• Even do our teachers do their best a lot of our students come from broken families which

translates into some behavior problems and lower test scores at some schools

• Talk with low level employees get our opinion not just the bosses

• Battles with all the unions.

• There needs to be better accountability with finances.

• Csea is always disputing co tract agreements for a long period but Hlpta and Sieu don’t

struggle much with their agreements on contracts Lack of teaching skills and extensive

teaching in the hacienda heights high performing schools. Non adequate principals in

the La puente area that do t have the motivation or skills to make its school and achieving

schools Maintenance workers slacking on the job all the time.

• THE UNFAIRNESS BETWEEN LA PUENTE, HACIENDA HEIGHTS SCHOOLS,

THE LACK OF OVERALL TRANSPARENCY. TOO MANY GOOD EMPLOYEES

LEAVING THE DISTRICT

• The Bond issue has been and remains a concern with mismanagement of funds and

supervision of outside contractors.

• Favoritism to the Asian community and the need to maintain all schools for local

children not children from other cities.

What skills, qualities or characteristics should the new superintendent possess to be

successful here? (This information is used as we screen potential candidates.)

• Must bring community together. Treat classified employees with respect and dignity.

Admit the wrongs and fix them. Accountability of Directors and supervisors

• Fairness, loyalty, trust worthy, and by the book.

• -Honest -Fair -A good leader that will lead by example -Openminded -Has worked as a

principal -Forward thinking -Progressive -Puts the children's interest first when making

decisions

• 1) Leadership that is beneficial to ALL (students, parents, ALL employees). More, much

more, of a service-leader quality/character. 2) Have TRUE interest in each of our

schools. Do you care about us? Do you care about the students of each school? It would

truly be nice for student to really know who their Superintendent is...it can change their

lives and even the Superintendent's. Our past superintendent and interim superintendent

make only ONE visit per year to our school...and that's during the summer to check the

campus. 3) Accept and value all employees regardless of classification, union, etc. 4)

Be approachable and have an open-door policy to all employees, students, parents, etc.

and/or neglect to unions.

• Awareness to staff concerns for students basic needs Equity for all no matter of their

residential area

New Superintendent should be from the outside not from within. Not trusted from the

inside at this point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

needs of the students and the community

• Have experience running a big company and what it takes to make it run great. Not

necessarily a school background but good business background.

• Being skiiled in Spanish and Chinese

• Focus on a superintendent that has been a teacher and climbed the ranks - who

understands the needs of teachers and students. Please not someone who has a reputation

as a good business man or woman. Yes, the district needs to be run by someone who

manages finances well and is fiscally sound. We don't need someone who plunges the

district into bankruptcy. Education can fall prey to the commercialization of learning.

Publishers, educational consultants, market their "latest goods" promising positive

academic outcomes, of course backed by data (that often has a bias interpretation). So

please pick someone who uses critical thinking skills to discern how money should be

spent, which may not necessarily be on the latest educational ideas or products. And

please someone who isn't seeking this position as a stepping stone to further their

political career. So what sort of qualities would be needed to be successful here?

Humility, honesty, compassion, service oriented, consultant, kindness, goodness and self-

control.

• They need to be a good communicator - be able to get ideas across in a clear and succinct

manner. They need to be fair, and willing to listen to all sides of an issue. They need to

58

be able to connect not only with the community but also the district employees. They

need to be approachable and not make people feel like they are an inconvenience.

• Professionalism, kindness, patient, dedication, considerate and conscientious.

• That all decisions made are all about the students first!

• BE NON BIASED or PREJUDICED - High Moral & diverse character EQUITABLE!

Financial knowledge Experience with school budgets Trust your HR Asst. Supt. who is

knowledgeable & fiscally responsible and who has been a scapegoat COMPLETE

Transparency Trust your 1st impression/judgement The Bargaining Units have a strong

force, but should not be allowed to strongarm specific decisions.

• To be fair. No special interest or favoritism to any one group. To always have the best

interest of all students as their first priority. Also to speak English well. No heavy accents

that cannot be understood by English only speakers.

• Be a powerful communicator, transparent, willing to work with all stakeholders.

• To be responsable, honest, and see for the best education of the children.

• Discerning; Always Seeking Wisdom In Final Decision-making (from “A Higher

Power”) And Always Striving for The Best Interest of the People Not Oneself.

• - open minded friendly and approachable think of the community first before his self

interest a good leader and a good follower know what he's doing quick to response not

political transparency educated

• Be ready for the challenging situations and knowing how work on the resolutions.

• Honest, Professional, Inclusive, collaborative, a healer. Ethical!!

• Ability to connect with community, parents, teachers, and to the students. Must be

personable, willing to get her hands dirty, willing to work with the unions, classified,

teachers, and administration. A great communicator with everyone, be compassionate,

but willing to not waste money on wasted programs that don’t work. Not to jump in on

programs that state and federal governments advocate.

• By keeping in touch with Parents and community

• Be open minded to all agencies involved i.e. employees and union, not only board

members and district office personnel.

• Be firm, Knowledgeable, equality all across the board and a good listener.

• Good communication skills, educated and caring

employees are an integral component to the functionality of the district and be

approachable and open to working with them on providing solutions to disparities

within the district. Additionally the new Superintendent should be/ have:

Bilingual(English/ Spanish preferably) Strong Leadership Skills Charismatic/ Pleasant

Demeanor Strong Communication skills Personable Strong Ethics Equitable

• Integrity good character and a sincere heart to see our district create individuals that will

• A strong leader, able to delegate, and hold people accountable. I thought they were great

superintendents. Check their background. Of Course they need to be well rounded. A

true leader in Education, and some some knowledge in finance.

• Time management, and people skills.

• They have to be willing to hear students, parents and employees and take action when

necessary. Someone that is familiar with the community or that is willing to get to know

the community. Needs to be familiar on how Elementary, Middle, High Schools, Adult

Schools and Child Dev are ran. Someone that is personable, approachable and fair.

• Strong legs to stand on. Good moral compass. Will stand for what is right regardless of

who is approaching him/her. Will not fold under pressure, especially from the unions.

• He or she should know what our district is in need of, what the employees need to feel

important as an employee. Not be be felt like we’re just a number to them.

• Good listener, to keep open communication with everyone in the district, kind, etc.

• Communicate well and lead in a fair and balanced way. They should also have

experience in education.

• Open minded to the diversity of this district Open to openly wide discussions from its

employees especially the classified. Strong to commit to strengthing all sections of the

district Resourceful in finding ways to make our district a school of equal learning

opportunities where our students can have a diverse learning environment especially for

the special education department. Experience with special education as the program in

our district doesn’t have a concrete detail format that leads our students into success in

their own abilities A form of equality treatment for all staff of HLPUSD

• good leadership, a visionary to be able to move our district forward with new ideas for

bettering our students learning environment, must know how to communicate and listen,

be involved with the community outside of work so he or she has an understanding of

what is needed in our schools

• Be available to come to school site, not just for walk throughs, but get to know each site,

its staff and it needs. Walking through to show face is disrespectful. Open door policy,

Not everything should go through the assistant superintendent.

• The superintendent needs to be seen at all schools and in the community. The

superintendent needs to be part of the community. There has been some schools shown

favoritism in the past. The superintendent needs to work for the schools on both halves of

the district. The superintendent should also have classroom experience. Someone who

has never worked in a classroom can not fully understand the needs of a classroom.

• A new superintendent with leadership to make sure that students in the district are

learning and achieving at a high level; with a vision in what needs to be done for the good

of the district, strategic thinking; with listening and communication skills.

• Again, they should be more adept at hiding their criminal endeavors and their collusion

with the Chinese Communist Party.

• Experience teaching in K-12. Knowledge of how a school site runs because they have

worked at a school site in a capacity of a teacher and Principal. No be intimidated by

board members

• The Superintendent needs to be well informed of our multicultural population.

• To be aware of the needs not only in their office, but all around the community.

• Kindness, compassion, though love and a good sense of humour, but most of all the

willing to help our students become successful

• Speak perfect English no hard core accent, it makes it difficult to understand if they have

it.

• Cares about students and all staff. Aware of all the laws and past issues of the district, has

a plan to make everyone's issues heard and possibly addressed.

), supportive

Community Members

Tell us the good things about your community. (This information is used to help us recruit

quality candidates.)

• Family oriented History Nature Generations of family

• Multicultural community. ALL students need representation

• Togetherness, hard working, family oriented.

• Diversity and caring, small town feel

• Our kids are our priority. Social media has allowed us to communicate faster and

prioritize our concerns at a wider range of the population.

• Our community unites to address many concerns and issues.

• Strong representation for civic accountability. Excellent working relationship with LA

Co. Government which is reciprocated through Supervisor Hahn's office.

• We have a lot of people who are willing to come out and share the opinion and

perspectives. Of the HLPUSD admin. And Board we have one person who votes FOR

fairness, logic and has no problem responding to the public.

• The district which includes Hacienda Heights and La Puente are very diversified and are

family oriented communities. Continuously working as a community to ensure our

communities continue to be the best place(s) for families.

• In the 35 years I've lived in Hacienda Heights, many things have changed. Agricultural

spaces have all but disappeared, real estate has soared to all but impossible prices for

most of our children to raise their families, and there's an ageing population that may

require a higher tax rate on the remaining workforce. Schools are closing, traffic has

increased, roads are in disrepair, and we still only have 2 patrol cars. On the good side,

we have open more green spaces, schools are being improved, I don't see as much

tagging.

• HLPUSD works like a large family community. People are friendly, and will stand for

what is right. Employees highly value students and their education, and really do put in

the extra mile.

• Pride

• Our community is very supportive of foster care and homeless. The La Puente Parks and

recreation have a lot of activities for kids and families. Our community is pretty peaceful

with a rich culture.

• Caring people.

• The community is relatively involved in all processes when the district does not hide

what is happening. If the new superintendent has or develops the internal/institutional

trust that ____has or develops the community support that board member _______has,

they will be a successful fit in the community's eyes. The community, at the moment,

does not have good faith in the current leadership, and that will be a problem that grows

if an internal selection is made. If an external selection is made and that external

candidate turns out to have the entire community's interests at heart - the community at

large may, for the first time, grow to support the district.

• Small town community.

• How is this relevant to finding a new superintendent????????

• We have very passionate individuals (whether its the parents, community, teachers, or

staff)

• I have 3 generations of children who have passed through Bixby Elementary Cedarlane

Academy and Wilson High School and the decline on services and up keep to all the

campuses in HLPUSD is really a shame and an undeserved decline to maintenance

Tell us the good things about your schools. (This information is used to help us recruit

quality candidates.)

• Nothing

• They care about the students.

• Parents motivated to help their children succeed

• Teachers and counselors are the core to our children's success. At times administration

and bureaucracy is the biggest downfall.

• The teachers are dedicated to the students no matter what the circumstances are with the

district.

• School site administrators demonstrate a true care for their students and the success of

their school. Students reach out to the community of Hac. Hgts. to ask for support for

events.

• Truly depends on the individual school, what the focus is. They finally after weeks started

teaching the students.

• We have a few good high schools like Wilson and Los Altos.

• Schools are being improved under the 'Twenty first century schools' measure K.

Demographics are changing, dual immersion is a thing, though languages should be

taught to all at an earlier age to be more effective.

• My schools are some of my favorite places to be. People are kind, helpful, and are

motivated to put in the hard work. They make the schools a friendly place for students

and their families as well, but making sure to make time for fun and true connection.

• Pride

• The good thing about our schools is that they have really caring and supportive staff that

will help students.

• Loyal staff toward district and students.

• As a former student (2017 grad), HLPUSD has some of the finest teachers and

maintenance staff in the area pulled from a variety of nearby communities. Although

there are clear inequities in how things are being run by upper management between the

schools, the teachers and classified staff pour their heart out into teaching and making

sure the area is clean and the students feel safe. My first school, Shadybend Elementary,

was closed by the district in order to save money for a future project, but it had the most

devoted and passionate individuals who helped me develop as a child. If there is any

stakeholder that should be considered the most, it should be between the teachers and

classified staff - they are on the front lines at every school. Again, I cannot stress

enough how great these individuals are and I truly hope you choose to value their input

more than the administrators and elected officials who are looking out for their own self

interest. A lot of community members and parents will also be looking out to score

political sway here as well for their causes, so I truly think your best feedback will come

from the teachers, cafeteria workers, and custodians throughout the district - the people

who know what its like on these campuses.

• CSEA classified employees committed to district. Live in community.

• How is this relevant to finding a new superintendent????????

• All stakeholders care about their perspective schools and want only the best.

• We have good teachers and aids. But they need better resources for themselves and the

students, especially in La Puente

What issues should the superintendent be aware of as he/she comes into the district? (This

information is shared with the final candidates.)

• No trust of employees and community. Sense of corruption. Mismanagement of funds.

Bond did not disclose truth of surplus money to voters. Wedgeworth school catering to

Asian and wealthy. Retaliation to employees. Directors and supervisors are made

allowances for their bad behavior. Etc Etc Etc

• Enormous mistrust by the community: this district/Board has deceived the public;

favored one group over another; spent too much time and energy on profiting from the

sale of PUBLIC property to fund a pet project, all at the expense of being ill prepared for

any kind of a surprise-let alone a “pandemic”

• Our unions always find a reason to complain about something Mental health isn't looked

at, more counselors needed Seems more like it is business oriented not Student oriented

Employees who don't do work get away with not doing work while employees who do

work keep getting more work The as long as it gets done mentality Lack of

accountability Lack of consistency Some individuals with titles treat staff as if they are

above them The talk about family is more important than work but it ends up being work

first before family Board meetings that last longer than they should Board members who

have ulterior motives The amount of quality employees who leave the district The

length of time it takes to hire vacant positions

• Board members’ conflicts of interest

• TRANSPARENCY!!!!!!!!!

• The lack of concern of students in education that state monies have been directed in

building a bungalow school to a stucco building when the funding should to to all schools

for equal education and not a priority school that buses high achieving students coming

from outside of this community.

• There is way too many administrators and DPS at the district office. Way too many

people that never have contact with students making 6 figures. There are too many

TOSA's and Department Heads

• Hac. Hgts. is an Unincorporated Area and the candidate needs to understand that. School

buildings infrastructure in various degrees of disrepair and need repairs and updating.

The School District Board of Supervisors need guidance and tighter controls over their

activities and interactions with the public.

• The parents and the community are looking for transperancy, equality, fairness and

response to the individuals concerns. A superintendent and their administrative staff, will

not work independently , taking action and then requesting approval from the board.

• Currently there is a lot of division between the Asian community (many are not area

residents) and the rest of the communities (Anglo, Latinos etc). The new superintendent

should have great communication skills and be inclusive of all communities including the

area residents (tax payers). Previous superintendents have not had the skill set necessary

to avoid divisions and has lacked transparency. There has to be changes at the

leadership level. There have been too many unnecessary lawsuits. The new facilities

Page 65: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

64

leader has be able to prioritize projects and be able to communicate with the residents,

parents, teachers etc. As a community we have not been happy with the facilities leader

and Human Resources. The new superintendent need to analyze whether the district

needs many consultants or hire leaders that can do the job.

• Holding students and parents accountable for unacceptable behavior in the classroom;

especially in middle and high schools. As a substitute teacher for twenty years, I'm

appalled at the lack of leadership when it comes to reprimanding disruptive behavior in

the classrooms. This include phone usage, student dress, language on campuses. In

order for there to be academic excellence, there needs to be appropriate conduct. The

majority of students not to have to tolerate poorly behaved students' antics. If a child

cannot contain themselves in the classroom, they should not be allowed back to class

until either the district or the parent can rectify the underlying issues that accompany such

behavior. Enough already!

• In every place there is a sort of divide, I think that the new superintendent could focus

best on unity of this divide, build more bridges if possible. Focus on a 'we' not a 'us vs

them' model.

• La Puente High School and Workman high School always get neglected and all the

money goes to Los Altos and Wilson High School. Not fair!

• Our district has a lot of caring people that work to help students, but the leadership is

really lacking. The people in charge form clicks and mistreat staff, students and parents.

There is a lot of corruption and politics and this district and we need somebody who

understands our community and is heavily involved with the Latino demographic. We

need more people that speak Spanish to relate to our community and to our students and

immigrant students. The district doesn't like to pay overtime but they ask staff to work for

free. As well the district doesn't like to provide laptops to classified staff but they expect

them to do work from home on their personal computers and cell phones. Teachers have

a very supportive union but classified staff does not. And when classified staff ask for

help they are mistreated further. We need somebody that will support our students and be

fair and impartial.

• Money should be monitored closer so it is spent in the Same areas the state intends it to

go to when issued.

• There is so much going on in this district that it would be simpler to reduce it to

simplified phrases: Building a $50 million+ school to improve Wedgeworth from K-5

to K-8 You will hear about how this is too much money from one camp, how it removes

the fields and congests traffic from another, and how bad the conditions are right now

from a third group - the board has been looking to go through with this project without

looking to compromise (improve conditions and keep it a K-5, expand Bixby [down the

street] from K-5 to K-8 and rename it Wedgeworth, go through with the Wedgeworth

expansion but do not build condos, keep the expansion but do not build temporary

instruction in a way that reduces the current fields etc) Uptick in general racism That

controversial project has led to disgusting words said about people of Asian and Hispanic

descent. The fields are something that the Hispanic individuals feel is important as they

were there for years, and a safe new school is something that the Asian individuals feel is

important because their children receive a quality education at Wedgeworth. Neither side

wants to part with their land, but the board is opting to move the three-four fields

elsewhere (cutting down on field space in the process) to build the school. The fairer

Page 66: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

65

solution is to keep the field and rebuild the school to a safer K-5 (nonportable) or kick

both out of that area (and maybe make it a county park) so that nobody is "favored." By

taking an action here, the community is divided and is resorting to awful words.

Growing lawsuits The district is engaging in questionable behavior which has led many

to sue and win cases of discrimination.. There's something wrong when there is so much

turnover in the height of controversial times. oversaw a bond that was passed for funds

when the board was sitting on two-three properties to sell - properties they earmarked in

order to fund the expansion project. allegedly gave contracts to people she knew, but I'm

still trying to independently verify that claim. Recall Initiative On The Board More is

referenced elsewhere, but the board has been called unrepresentative and the next step

that was taken (changing elections) had a huge blow to the effectiveness of the recall.

Trustee Election Change In a very nontransparent process, the board ignored the

community inputs for Map Four, which were significant, and pushed forward Map Three

to protect their incumbency.

• Lack of communication from District to community, students, employees.

• The mass exodus of upper management.

• Everyone has their own agenda

• We have had a tremendous amount of non transparency with the subject of property sales

and how that money should be appropriated throughout the district FAIRLY not just for

some families

What skills, qualities or characteristics should the new superintendent possess to be

successful here? (This information is used as we screen potential candidates.)

• A true honest person. Not self serving Someone to clean up the corruption and

mismanaged funding. Proactive not reactive Treat classified employees like people.

Treat people with respect. A person with ability to communicate clearly verbally

• Ethical; approachable; transparent; command of the English language; ability to Lead and

not just Follow the Board

• Students first Diplomatic Does not serve the board but the students Understanding

Compassionate Outgoing Doesn't let their title go to their head Treats all staff with

respect, equally

• Ability to engage parents and integrate their feedback in a comprehensive district-wide

strategic plan. Recruit and retain talented educators. District needs science/math magnet

program.

• Sensitive to the kids, parents, and community. Disregard any and all special interest or

personal agendas, including board members.

• To be honest and open to the community for any concerns and to utilize money wisely for

all students benefit for equal education.

• Should be able to speak Spanish.

• Budget management. Forward looking planning. Fair and equal interactions with the

diverse social structure and racial make-up in Hac. Hgts. Open to community input.

• Wear many hats but keep the focus clear. Sets direction and tone but responsive to

competing demands around them. Does all things out in the open, no secrets, no working

for self benefit. Remember that the school board is their boss, no matter how easy they

believe they are making it for the board by taking things on their own authority.

Page 67: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

• Extremely good communication skills and be able to be transparent, have integrity. Very

important to not be afraid to make changes. **we have a group of approximately 700

people that represent community, employees, parents and teachers. No one has reached

out for feedback We also have an Association that represents Hacienda Heights: HHIA

http://hhia.net/ We need representation at the monthly community meetings.

• High integrity when it comes to the pursuit of every child having the opportunity for an

excellent education. HLPSUD has awesome teachers. They need the tools to teach all

students who have come to attain an education.

• Kindness, compassion, good with making boundaries and expectations of others in a

respectful and connected way, serve by example, able to bring people together, be able to

stand his/her ground for what is right no popular, to be happy hard worker, motivated,

excited to lead, and to be able to light the fire in their employees.

• Pride in the high school and city.

• The superintendent should have worked with the Latino demographic as our community

is heavily Latino. We need somebody who speaks Spanish and understands the people

and the students needs. We especially need somebody who cares about our district and

putting our staff first so that we can provide a better learning environment for the

students and community. We also need more programs for the students and electives, we

are so limited as to what is being offered to them and we don't have resources for many

programs.

• Get along well with others.

• They must be a communicator who bridges the gaps and someone who engages all

stakeholders. If they are an internal selection or someone who is political they will be

rallied against.

• Compassion, integrity, empathy, decisive, and committed.

• They should be able to clearly communicate and make decisions while accepting

responsibility. Decisions by committee leave no accountability.

• Strong, credentialed, not afraid to roll up their sleeves and not say “its not my job”, “i

was told that i cant do that”, be a decision maker, be a leader and not a follower. Offer

suggestions, dont twist conversations. Dont play the victim. Stand up for what is right

and not what is political. Dont be a yes person.

• We need someone who's going to be fair to all the members of all the community

members in our school district not just a few families.

Parents

Tell us the good things about your community. (This information is used to help us recruit

quality candidates.)

• We have very involved community but also different social economic, academic quality,

races background.

• Quiet neighborhood, people look very nice to each other.

• We are a hard working, diverse community

language program is also a highly sought after program.

• Pretty. Convenient. 60 and 605 freeways. Safe.

• Caring sense of community and strong family ties.

of life for everyone that lives there.

• secure friendly

• We are a smaller community and we care about our neighbors.

• I am sad and disappointed to say there is nothing good to share because the system is

broken and has left our community abandoned and give us no hope in the future for our

students and families to have any type of financial support

• Being a la Puente resident and growing up in such a small community has grown to be

more resourceful.

• It is culturally diverse.

• I like my community..

• We like to follow the rules and maintain safety in our community

• Hard working people. Some are 1st and 2nd generation who want the best for their

children.

• Respect, kindness and green.

68

• The HLPUSD community is very diverse, economically and culturally. That is an

untapped and under appreciated potential.

• wonderful community with families who care about schools and student achievement.

Finding someone with strong academic experience but also Human Resources

experiences to avoid issues and build strong staffing to support effective student

achievement

• Our La Puente community is very united. Parents, students and families always gather to

celebrate when ever something needs to be celebrated. There is a sense of unity and

appreciation amoungst many in the city of La Puente.

• Close knit community. Small enough where so many people know one another.

• Sense of family, stability.

• Great community, supportive and we all want what’s best for our kids.

• Our community is concerned about safety, raising decent responsible children, it seems to

be more on the conservative side, it's quiet, clean and anti-gangs and graffiti.

• Diversity

• Despite our size as one of the larger school districts in California, we still maintain a

sense of intimacy among our different levels of schools.

• N/A

• Our community wants to engage in a productive, safe, forward-moving environment.

• Our community is friendly and resilient.

• Nothing, it's ghetto

• We are a small suburb of Los Angeles that is quiet and uncrowded. Hardworking people

who want to live a good and peaceful life.

• Providing various enrichment programs like computer science and dual languages.

• Diverse, knowledgeable, resourceful, advocates, involved

• The People in our Community for the most part are honest and caring citizens.

• Convenient. 60 & 605. Middle class suburbs.

• We care about the outcome of our students

• The community is willing to come together and work with the board for the best interests

of the students.

• Our community is made up of hard working people who care about the education of their

children.

• Culturally diversive.

• We are family !

Tell us the good things about your schools. (This information is used to help us recruit

quality candidates.)

• Lots of high academic achievements and talented students in different areas, loving and

caring teachers and staff, and involvement parents.

• Dedicated teachers

• Teachers are very helpful.

• We need a new principal at Workman.

• They seem to be very sensitive to the community economic shortfalls.

• Elementary schools encourage getting to college. Get yourself prepared even if you don't

have the money Prepare. We will assist you in finding the way in through grants,

financial aid

• From the principal to the janitor are committed and caring towards our kids. Teachers

provide unconditional support but they need resources and stability for their schools.

Training for our teachers is the best part as well as field trips for their classes.

• held different activity to our kids

• Teachers love our kids, admin do not.

• I love the staff at Wing Lane. They always worry so much about our kids.

• My school Wedgeworth is good in every way - teachers and principal are dedicated,

students are taught good morals, learning Chinese, and computer learning ready.

Wedgeworth is a good school, should extend to 8th grade.

• Good teachers. Good kids.

• Awesome parents teachers and students.

• GAWHS - Education, Teachers, Administration, staff, willing to go over and beyond to

help students succeed. Girls soccer coaches, IB Program, welcoming school was my first

impression at back to school.

• The teachers and administrators really try to work together with parents. They are

knowledgeable, kind, and supportive.

• Great students, involved parents and a few good programs.

• school activities .after school programs. parks and rec.electronic devices for learning

• Students are motivated. Some of our schools have lower drug and gang activities.

• The schools are scraping by the Distract and leaders have failed our staff parents and

most importantly our students in all aspects education wise financially and support

• The schools here has made a positive impact that I've personally experienced as an

hlpusd student AND as a parent.

• Most kids will stay in the District for their whole education. Kids go to good colleges

(more in the Wilson Quadrant)

• Teachers work very hard to help students succeed.

• I'm really happy with Baldwin Academy Elementary, I love the teachers, the principal is

unique she helps a lot the students, parents etc..

• Very informative when it comes to informing us of what is going on with our children at

school.

• Workman has childeren from all walks of life.

• Sports, science olympiad , after- school enricment classes and band.

• Not relevant. The new superintendent doesn't need to work on the 'good things' but rather

solve some of the inequities in the system.

• zero tolerance to bullying and my daughter’s teachers actual make their students take

accountability for their mistakes by writing an apology letter and admitting their mistakes

and having them face the person they need to apologize to. Moral education.

• Dedicated teachers who truly care about their students

Page 71: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

70

• Schools reflect the community they serve and are sensitive to local needs.

• great schools in hacienda heights but need to focus on improving achievement across all

schools. someone who can bring people together preferably with negotiations experience

and strong people skills.

• La Puente HS has alot of history. Our students and alumni love to see the school

represented. The community is luck to have many alumni always come back not only to

work at LPHS but to volunteer and attend school events. There is a big sense of pride

embedded amoungst the alumni warriors.

• Offer many extra curricular activities that cater to the needs of its school community.

• English learners accommodations, high school administrators (specifically Wilson HS).

• Rigorous work and high test scores.

• Our schools strive to be on the cutting edge. They have high standards. Teachers are

responsive to student needs.

• Strong Academics.

• Our schools maintain some of the most dedicated educators. The concern is for the well-

being of the whole community inclusive of students, parents, and families.

• They are very informative with information coming in.

• Our schools want to standout and compete with other districts. We are just as capable

and want access to the opportunities and resources every other school has.

• I cannot speak about all schools, but most of the staff members at Mesa Robles are

welcoming and professional. For the most part, teachers are supportive, approachable,

and knowledgeable. Mesa Robles welcomes and encourages parent involvement.

• Nothing, teachers and staff should be replaced

• Our schools are small in numbers compared to other districts. We have quality people

working hard everyday to make them great.

• Great dual immersion programs, sports and after school programs.

• Teachers are great and communicate well with parents.

• The teachers and administrators make up for the lack of resources from the school district

administrators

• Schools have all the resources that are provided to all the students to achieve. Some

school are better than others because of the involvement of all the staff and also the

administrators that are involved in many events in the community

• Schools are smaller sized and great for the community. Small schools give a family

feeling. Many fun activities at each school. Offer many different programs depending on

what interests you. Dual language, engineering, coding, Leadership

• Providing excellent education and dual language program.

• Dual immersion programs, after school clubs, sports, cultural activities,

• The Teachers and Staff are amazing with caring and helping our children be successful in

all aspects of learning.

• Great teachers who work hard. Great kids.

• There is a sense of community and concern for the well being of the students and their

families.

• The schools aim for student success.

• Our schools are great. The high level of teaching and support is great. We have an

outstanding afterschool program that helps my kids do better in school

Page 72: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

71

• They have some wonderful teachers.

• We love our teachers and schools but feel unrepresented in th Valinda/La Puente area!

What issues should the superintendent be aware of as he/she comes into the district? (This

information is shared with the final candidates.)

• Understand our district's culture, has experience with in the field and willing to listen

and provide the needs and expectations of each school

• Low enrollment My children have been in combo classes because of low enrollment.

• Can't thinking about it at this time.

• He or She needs to listen to schools more than board members and district people

• That the open district policy cannibalizes and takes students from smaller or schools to

the larger schools in more affluent neighborhoods. Less students less money for that

school and the worse shape they are in, which makes the students/parents that want to

stay consider leaving. Example Workman was promised a football field for their own

home games, they got a practice field...they seem to always get the short end of the stick.

• English learners are valued as long as their primary language isn't spanish. Parents

compains how asian parents are assisted faster

• electronics and excommunication should be the priority. My kids did not learn anything

since the schools were closed and even after our kids have online classes teachers we’re

equipped and trained to run it smoothly. Our district is behind this year and should not be

underestimated. Our schools need covers and upgrade some classrooms where kids have

to walk outside to move within gris school when is raining or hot.

• should be able to communicate ( bilingual speaking ) especially Mandarin due to

increase of new asian immigrant

• They have terrible district leadership who just yell at their staff and make them move out

of this district.

• n/a

• - superintendent should make aware of exceeding amount of problems caused by few so

called community activists. - superintendent should FOCUS on education, NOT politics

that is surfacing in this district -people in this position should know how to MANAGE

people, work with people and knows to manage money. Education knowledge can be

shared by hers cabinet / committees - which means superintendent shouldn't limit to

people with education background. -I highly suggest to keep current interim

superintendent because I'd rather board members to focus on distance learning packets

and prepare, plan ahead for new school year

• Difficult lifers who work for the district. Resistant to change. No education or training in

dealing with Gifted children and hence the Distict loses gifted children.

• Student safety, financial issues (spending audits), need for more technology

• Aware of the school needs in order to help with successful students. Aware of teacher

needs.

• Frivolous spending by the district in the past, an often criticized board, and lack of

support for teachers.

• Unequal opportunities between the two cities sharing the same school district. The

agenda between La Puente and HH sides are too divided. It must be equal and balanced

if two cities want to co-exist in the same school district. Too many times, two

Page 73: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

72

communities have a fight over who gets more and less or whatnot, and creating a terrible

place for our students to learn and compare.

• make sure the district has the funds needed for quality learning....NO EXCUSES AND

SOFT STORIES ABOUT HOW THERE IS NOOT ENOUGH FUNDS.

• 1)School administrator set reasonable consequences for students misbehavior and

breaking school rules, but don't follow through. Students get away with lots of things as a

result. 2) there district does not give high school credit for high school level work

completed in middle school. This is very discouraging for advanced students and detract

them from coming to the district. My daughter is a high-achieving student wanting to

enter into this district's high School how much are the school. But when Hacienda La

puente unified did not accept her advanced work, she decided to go out elsewhere.

• Changes need to be executed immediately our students staff and parents deserve the

proper and essential means to move ahead

• He/she should be aware of the gang-stricken areas that need more patrolling and/or

surveillance by either law enforcement or CCTV if made possible. Vandals and taggers

make our community stand out, making it look trashy in some areas.

• There are 4 groups in the district: Asians and Hispanics Vocal and not as vocal parents

We need diversity and ways to keep kids in the district. We need to get out of the bottom

of districts in LA County. We are behind in how we handle decisions, we have tons of

lawsuits, our School Board is self driven and power hungry (no diversity & don't listen to

students and parents unless it's the vocal parents) They need to know we need quality

teachers! Stop passing teachers around from school to school. They are not helping our

students. They need to not be afraid of making decisions, and ON TIME. THE

DISTRICT IS LATE, SLOW AND INDECISIVE.

• Parents were not held accountable for their own children's education.

• I think the students need to have more sports, have more activities for the students, we

need more electronics etc..

• Policies regarding children being absent.

• Disparities in latino population in education.

• The rampant and widespread practice of stressing the students with too much homework.

My son, 10th grader, stays up all night to complete all of his homework. Often times

teachers schedule last minute assignments and projects, and sometimes multiple teachers

do this at the same time. Despite these challenges, because my son is motivated he gets

them done, but at the cost of physically draining himself. Also, too much homework is

scheduled for the weekends and Holidays. Come on people!

• Not many parents are available to attend meetings and an email or mail to express their

needs and wants is a good way to reach out to those parents

• providing more after school program opportunities with diverse qualification for parents

who fall under different circumstances

• There is a significant divide between "north" and "south" with the 60 freeway being the

line of demarcation. This divide is evident in the type and amount of support schools are

provided with much more attention being paid to the schools in the Hacienda Heights

area. This division is also evident in the politics within and between the cities, local

organizations, and the Board of Education. The nw Superintendent will have the

challenge of bringing the HLPUSD community together, implementing a mindset of

equity and opportunity, and allocating resources accordingly. They must also contend

Page 74: Unified School Districtmacnjake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Hacienda... · Stakeholder Input Report for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District City of Industry, California

73

with very strong unions and a 3-year compensation agreement that the district will now

not be able to afford given the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

• managing student achievement and hiring practices that are focused on high achievement

• As an alumni, product of the district and now also parent of the district the lack of

equality between the north schools and the south schools is evident. Inequalities exists

between the schools and the quads. It was evident when I was attending HLPUSD 20

years ago and it is still present today.

• The ethnic and economic diversity of our school communities is a very important factor

in selecting our next superintendent. Access and equity to meet the needs of all students.

• Corruption free,

• The district is technology behind. There is no cohesiveness throughout the district. All

classrooms are not 21st century.

• That the district seems to have a lot of small fires to put out in terms of permits that have

gone unfinished. There seems to be a need for an unbiased, neutral third party oversight.

This will help clean up our district.

• The divide between Hacienda and La Puente schools.

• Declining enrollment and the ability to develop flexible master schedules that offer

students plenty of choices in pathways EQUITABLY across the district.

• Not sure

• If selected, based on ideas and earnest promises to enhance our district, we will want to

see positive outcomes/results/follow through.

• Currently, there are many issues that need to be addressed within the school district. The

community is divided because of disagreements regarding how the Board Members are

handling the situation about building a new school (Wedgeworth.) There are many

controversies regarding Board Members honesty. The new superintendent would need to

be able to bring parents, staff, Board members, and students together and make sure the

decision made are focused on the well-being of the students and not on the personal

interests of a few.

• The facilities are old and need repair. Some consolidations should be made in the

elementary schools to improve the facilities of the remaining schools. Some families still

do not understand the importance of higher education, so alternative programs should be

made available to students at the high school level so they can make a more informed

decision at graduation time.

• Issues the need to improve campus beautification. Continue supporting robotics, and

other extracurricular activities.

• We have a lot of students that need emotional support, teachers need more support with

disruptive students, bullying problem in our district, funds are always low, and our school

board members is a disgrace.

• The lack of resources available and lack of attention to the La Puente schools

• I would like to see social studies and science be taught regularly. I don't understand why

math and ela are the only subjects being taught when standards are what are supposed to

drive instruction.

• This district is one of the big ones and diversity from pre-k to HS & adult school. I think

they should be very inform about the schools populations to help and understand each site

and their needs

• Communities live their local schools and want great programs at each. We like being able

to walk to neighborhood schools. Some schools have free after school care and some

don’t. This should be for all. Some schools have few lunch for all and some don’t, this

should be for all.

• Need more enrichment programs for all schools like STEM, coding and multi language

programs.

• The majority of the teachers are incredible but the few really bad ones seem immune

from accountability and discipline. It makes parents feel helpless and it tarnished the

reputation of the district that is full of amazing teachers that go above and beyond. Please

protect our students from the teachers that have repeated, multiple complaints about

them. Our school principals are wonderful. They need more administrative support, Vice

principals at each school and a designated dual immersion TOSA at each school with a

DI program.

• Fairness throughout ALL schools. We have local schools higher exams. More resources

available and other schools are not as high in exams. Also a lot of the schools need

updating and more resources for the teachers to help their students

• Lots of things to clean up. The district needs cleaning. People are too stubborn in their

positions. They refuse to do things that haven't been done before. Lots of lawsuits.

• The un equality and lack of transparency from the school district towards the community.

The $52 millions dollars that the school district wants to waste on one single school.

• There has been a huge divide between the community, school board and superintendent

for many years.

• The new Suoerintendent should be aware of how mean the DO staff are and work to

create a culture of support in the DO. We have 2 board members that abuse their power

and treat people poorly

• The district likes to cover up the truth about things that are going on within the district.

District was extremely slow to get distance learning started for our kids. There was so

much inconsistency from one school and one teacher to another in terms of connecting to

their students. Some connected with their students right away, while others didn't do

anything until 5 weeks post closure. SpEd department did not clearly explain to parents

how services for their services would look, and providers were not providing any services

or support for 5 weeks.

• We feel underrepresented and the district isn't listening to our concerns in the La Puente

Valinda area.

What skills, qualities or characteristics should the new superintendent possess to be

successful here? (This information is used as we screen potential candidates.)

• Open minded to listen and wise when make any decision for district, hard-working,

experienced, understand our district's culture, friendly, and against discrimination of

genders, races, and social economic background.

• Problem solver Involved

• Knowledgeable, doer, understanding culture difference and good listener ...

• Need to get rid of some district people that don’t care about us

• Strength ethics and fairness to be able to distribute funds fairly, the already larger schools

in more affluent areas should share a piece of the pie to the schools lacking.

needed across the board. From Palm Cyn to Baldwin across the hill to Grazide, the need

is the same Children are our greatest resource

what needs to eliminate or improve. Hands on approach where needs a close present on

each schools Willing to continue learning and able to teach and believe on it Provide

• - KNOWS how to MANAGE MONEY ! - WORK with different type of people in this

community -FAMILIAR of issues in this community - NO NEW comers !!! - Stay

neutral, have common sense, good judgement and not taking sides - Able to generate

more enrollments

• Must have vision. Not be an administrator but be a visionary. Researcher. Leader. Not be

afraid of making mistakes. Be willing to own up to their mistakes and try new things.

Bold. Good communicator. Not micromanager. Inspiring. Leader.

• Ability to work with parents and teachers. Open and transparent and PROVEN record to

deal with situations of crisis (fires, shootings, sexual misconduct and now COVID). Led

districts that emphasized preparing students for CAREERS and LIFE SKILLS in addition

to college.

• Not Political, Honest, Ethical, Approachable, Communicator, strong with all

stakeholders. Knowledge in all of the Divisions of the district. Familiar with FCMAT

handbook, CBO certified trained, knows and understands the budgets, visits schools and

knows the needs of campus, cleanliness of schools and interacts with staff, teachers and

students. Is on top of all lead positions in order for district to work together and

successful for students.

• For once, can we please have someone that actually cares and is also competent at the

same time? I sure hope those aren't such unicorn-like qualities. Parents are NOT difficult

to deal with when we can tell that you truly care and are doing the best you can.

• Must set the vision, goals, and objectives for the district, and then sees to it that the goals

are achieved. He needs to be an instructional leader. He or she knows that the most

important job of the school district is to make sure students are learning and achieving at

high levels. Be an effective communicator, don't make excuses, be available to

community, An effective superintendent must take a stand and do what is the best for all

students, even if that means offending the teachers union or a group of parents. Not

afraid to take risks or make a commitment and follow up to ensure success across the

school district.

• Happy and engage with the parents for a full view of whats going on through out the year

• Prompt communication with parents. I had written an email to the previous

superintendent and never received a response. Understand the needs and values this

particular community. Promote more than academic achievement and encouraged

students to explore their giftings. Acknowledge and promote the worth of blue and white

color vocational goals equal merit. The society needs both to flourish. Listen to parents'

concerns. Give teachers more time to teach and less administrative tasks. Most parents

don't like common core. It is more confusing than helpful.

• They have to put our District as the #1 priority and come in fighting for our schools

students staff and parents no exceptions Bring all efforts to change what is in place for a

fresh start because what is in place now is not working

• Being selfless and personable.

• A real leader with an education background and financial understanding. Be able to be

open and welcoming, easy to talk to Transparent A strong decision maker Good

speaker, can communicate Must be about teachers and students, with parent

involvement.

• Someone with experiences as a classroom teacher for many years who understands what's

best for the educators and students. Definitely not someone who runs public schools like

a cooperation.

• Have better opportunities for the children, it's everything about the children..

• Organizational, communication, teamwork

• We need someone one who doesn't catter to one's race but who is here for all the kids

• Need to know more than one language. Excellent communication skills. Willing to

participate in school meetings/celebrations.

• One who listens firsts, doesn't dismiss parents input, has the quality to entertain the

notion that parents might actually know something. Someone who understands that

students are human beings and not data and that you cannot make every decision driven

by data.

• Learning to listen to other people

• It is critical that the Board selects a candidate that is intimately familiar with the

community and the competing interests that are in play. It would be ideal to select a

candidate that grew up in the area as they would better understand the needs of the

District and community. I hope that the consultants supporting this effort are reaching

out to promising candidates and not just relying on those who apply. There are many

current Superintendent vacancies and finding the right person will require reaching out

to select individuals; sitting Superintendents would be preferable.

students

professional development in technology.

• We need a strong, just and ethical leader. One who can help the district run more

smoothly and efficiently. We need someone who has an education background. One

who has taught in a classroom as well as worked as an administrator so that the new

leader has first hand knowledge of what it means to deal with students, parents, teachers

and everyone in between. We need someone who cares enough to fix the problems and

be less concerned about whose toes might be stepped on to clean up the district.

• Great interpersonal skills. A compassion to understand the two sides of the community

(Hacienda vs. La Puente) and to not let test scores dominant all learning. Students do not

grow up to be professional test takers. They need real world skills and to be well-

rounded individuals.

• The new superintendent should be able to get out and know the district. This includes

teachers, site administrators, custodians, maintenance, but above all students and

families.
