Collaborating with Female Artistes to mark International Women’s Day
Photo ©Yoshimoto Creative Agency
To mark International Women’s Day (8 March), UNIC Tokyo
worked with Yoshimoto Kogyo, Japan’s top entertainment
company, to invite local female artistes to raise awareness on
gender equality issues to the Japanese public. The campaign’s
main message was that gender discrimination imprisons the
mind and stifles potential for collective growth. At the same time,
the campaign also aims to shed light on the progress made so far
in terms of gender equality and to bring hope on the progress that
can be achieved, particularly as we try to achieve the Sustainable
Development Goals and strive towards true equality between
men and women.
Photo ©Yoshimoto Creative Agency
The artists shared messages demonstrating their experiences,
hopes and dreams. Comedienne Oni-yakko talked about the
challenges of giving up her childhood dream of becoming a
professional baseball player because of gender stereotypes.
Comedienne Yuriyan Retriever shared a similar belief that
because of these stereotypes, women tend to preoccupy
themselves with perceived “beauty standards” instead of taking
the time to love and inspire themselves and those around them.
Photo ©Yoshimoto Creative Agency
Campaign organizers hope that these comedians’ messages will
resonate with Japanese women – particularly with those who are
hesitant and unsure of their power to speak up and let their
personal voices be heard.

Experiences @ Work
Staff views and experiences
By Junichi Imai, UN Volunteer, UNIC Lusaka In October 2016, I arrived in Zambia to join UNIC Lusaka as a United Nations Volunteer (UNV) having been selected for a competitive five month programme through Kwansei Gakuin University in Japan where I am studying Sociology as a third year student. I will never forget working with UNIC Lusaka. It was a priceless experience for
me. As a Communications Assistant, I did my best to spread attractive information and help to visually promote UN activities in Zambia using my information/communications technology and photography skills. In the process, there were some achievements like my picture from a Sustainable Development Goal cycling activity being used by the UN official twitter account which has an amazing 8.5 million followers. I was also happy that some UN agencies in Zambia, whom I supported through the UN Communications Group used my pictures. Thanks to the UNIC colleagues, I was able to contribute to holding successful outreach activities in schools. UNIC Lusaka and the local UNV office supported me and were like my family. I say to the team: “Natotela Sana”, which translates to “Thank you very much” in the Bemba language that I enjoyed speaking with the few words I managed to grasp and use with every local that I met. I was happy to enjoy Zambia’s staple food, nshima and accompanying fish, meat, local vegetables and other delicacies. I travelled for close to 500 kilometers to Livingstone to see the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and Zambia’s most popular tourist attraction. Visiting the Victoria Falls was amazing. I have seen many world heritage sites in but the falls is the best one for me. Zambians say that without visiting the falls, you have not been to Zambia. I am now back in Japan.
