COMMODORE ’S LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP Submitted by Leigh Chapman

PAGE 2 MAINSHEET

Welcome to the world of the great unknown. It is very difficult to plan events in the midst of the pandemic. For the time being, we are continuing our curbside to go menu with daily lunch and dinner specials. We have placed tables on the bricks to encourage members to enjoy their food and the atmosphere of HYC. Please follow the social distancing guidelines. I have the tables placed according to the standards by the state. Please do not move the tables on the bricks, the flag deck or the gazebo.

We will do the best we can to get back to some sense of normalcy as restrictions are eased. We will keep you informed of events that we may be able to do safely.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone back at the club in the near future.

Richard Ash Club Manager

MANAGER’S REPORT

While I don’t exactly consider my beloved father a philosopher, he did share a true gem many years ago as I was

shopping for my first real car that wasn’t a hand-me-down. It was 1998, and I had my eye on a ’97 Candy Apple Red

convertible Mustang. He had test driven it with me that day and I asked him at dinner if he thought I should go ahead

and buy it. He carefully stated, “Honey, sometimes you do something with your heart, and sometimes you do it with

your head. Which is this?” Obviously, being a red convertible, it was a “heart-inspired” purchase. I bought the car,

installed a tow hitch, latched on my Hampton One-Design and headed up the road. In retrospect, I’m not sure what

Dad was really advising, but luckily the car treated me well for many years.

I have thought about his advice often in the past week or so as we begin to get into the weeds on reopening various

aspects of the club. Is the answer I’m giving based on how I feel, or is it based on what I know to be true? My head

says we have to honor the State and local rules, but my heart says we are duty-bound to protect our members and staff

with policies and procedures that might go beyond those minimums. My head looks at the numbers and the declining

revenues, but my heart pushes those to the side a bit as we take tender, tentative first steps toward our new normal

and our new numbers. My heart wants all the sailing, racing, cruising and parties to resume ASAP, but my head knows

that could be risky and so we, your leaders, gather our collective heads and hearts and painstakingly hammer out our

answers, one by one.

Only one thing is certain; we are sure to get some of it wrong. It is my constant hope and worry that, in our errors,

we do not bring illness or financial ache to our members or the club. I also sincerely hope that, in our victories, we

find a way forward that honors our collective love of the Bay and all the joy that being on or near the water brings us as

it has the HYC members who came before and those who will come after.

I hope that each of you can find a way to enjoy the Bay this summer, to languish in the long sunny days and sense the

sun warming your skin, to absorb every moment of a beautiful sunset on the horizon, to anchor out on a peaceful night

and watch the skimmers do their dance, to experience the rush of water beneath the hull as the wind quickens, to see

the phosphorescence in your wake at night, to feel the pole bend and catch against your tug when that fish hooks, to

taste a fresh crab cake from that day’s chicken-neckin’, or to smell the fresh “boat coffee” after a long night on watch.

These are the life experiences that allow the heavy heart and the busy head to align and to know that, while all is

definitely not right in the world, all can most certainly be right for a few fleeting moments on the water!

(Continued from page one) *May 29, 2020 Earliest, Potential Date for Phase Two- Minimum two-week time frame expires of Phase One Guidelines, the continuation of Phase One or introduction of Phase Two is subject to data metrics related to COVID-19. Strict social distancing, mandatory usage of PPE, and confidential temperature monitoring.

Class sizes will be set according to state and local government mandates.

Double-handed and Multi-Crew platform classes may commence, all members must wear PPE (face mask and gloves). Sailors must maintain social distancing and stick to assigned boats when applicable.

Adult Programs may resume depending on what state guidelines allow.

Local racing/regattas may resume at your own risk with limited race committee, online documents/support, and limited socializing. All involved must wear PPE when interacting on the water with instructors/coaches/race committee and maintain social distancing as much as possible. There should be careful consideration before attempting a regatta that involves a rotation of boats. TBD Date to Begin Phase Three- Phase Three Guidelines allow for expanded youth and adult activities to resume with social distancing, usage of PPE, and temperature monitoring will be confidential but mandatory.

Class sizes will be set according to state and local government mandates.

Overnight Inshore Classes may resume depending on what guidelines allow.

Travel Race Teams may resume depending on what guidelines allow. The regatta schedule is constantly evolving as regattas are still being postponed to later dates or cancelled. I am hopeful that we will have travel teams but HYC junior teams will be seeing more time in the Southern Bay with NYCC and FBYC. HYC is committed to the health and safety of our sailors and staff and will continue to provide the best instruction under what the guidelines allow. I can assure you that HYC has hired a great staff of instructors and coaches for this summer and we are among the lead-ing clubs in the country to provide a healthy and safe environment for our students. If you haven’t signed your child or grandchild up for summer sailing there is no time to waste as class sizes will continue to remain small and you don't want them missing out!

PROUDLY WE HAIL Submitted by Ann Marie Harris

On Saturday, May 16, 2020, the Downtown Hampton Exchange Club presented the Proudly We Hail award plaque to the Hampton Yacht Club. The award was presented by President William Trimble and accepted by HYC Commodore, Leigh Chapman.

No symbol better signifies our nation's greatness than our American flag—the Stars and Stripes. The Proudly We Hail program encourages regular and proper display of the flag by individuals, commercial establishments and industries. This program promotes Americanism as well as community recognition by the Exchange Club. Moreover, the program benefits both the community and the nation by enhancing and strengthening a national sense of patriotism and pride.

- Reservations are not required, but will be accepted by calling the club at 722-0711.

- Tables and chairs may not be moved or pushed together. The largest tables seat six.

- We have limited seating available; we ask that members kindly limit their occupation time at serviced tables to approximately one hour if there are other members waiting.

- Enhanced cleaning of tables, chairs, and the restrooms in the Administrative building will be conducted regularly to help keep you safe. Service will make use of disposable dishes, disposable utensils, disposable napkins and single use condiments. Here's what you must remember:

- We are still in Phase I. If you are vulnerable to COVID 19, you are still safer at home. If you are exhibiting ANY symptoms of the disease, please do us all a favor and stay home! Do not endanger staff or fellow members.

- Staff will be wearing masks to keep you and themselves safe. Please consider wearing your mask when not eating and drinking. Masks are mandatory anytime when entering a building (e.g., to use the restroom).

- No gatherings of 10 or more people are allowed anywhere in the Commonwealth, and that includes all of HYC's property. If you cannot social distance in your gathering, please don your mask. This rule applies if you are enjoying beverages around the patio, on the flag deck or at the north lot gaze-bo. Please know that the club's restaurant license could be in jeopardy if mem-bers exhibit blatant disregard for this rule.

- Do not crowd the staff. They are risking their health to serve us, and we need to be cognizant and appreciative of their willingness to come to work each day. We hope that you are able to enjoy the facilities next weekend, and that you do so safely. Thanks for your patience!

HYC Casual Cruisers:

Phase I of the Covid-19 reopening plan is now in effect, at least here in Southern Virginia. The reopening plan still includes many restrictions, making it hard to predict whether the cruises planned for June will be able to go forward as presently planned. The State’s plan now in effect still limits gatherings to no more than 10 people making it very difficult to host cruises in the way that we have in the past. Unfortunately, what we do not yet know is when Phase II can or will be implemented which will allow gatherings of up to 50 people. We will continue to follow the requirements or advise of the Governor and will plan our cruises where possible. Our plans continue to evolve, and we are still looking to head back onto the water as a club starting with a Cruise to Mobjack Bay, a Beach Party at Kiptopeke and ending the month with a Cruise to Norfolk Yacht Club.

The good news is that I have seen a resurgence of members on the docks, boats are being prepared to cruise, and some getting out for a sail or two. Misty and I even got ourselves underway for a quiet weekend cruise to Back Creek where we spent a wonderful evening at anchor. We followed that with an expanded weekend cruise to the Ware River, which was a little warmer. I even got up enough courage to take a dip, although not a long one. I am still very optimistic, and soon we will be out on the water Cruising and enjoying sundowners in a “new normal” way.

Regardless whether you spend your time on a sailboat or powerboat, all can be Casual Cruisers. Time to get underway, Sergio S/V Modus Vivendi (757) 635-1846 [email protected]

Upcoming Cruises

Mobjack Bay, 13-14 June

To the fleet sailing to Mobjack Bay... Welcome to the Southern Chesapeake’s best backyard ever! Our Primary Anchorage will be on East River, with the exact spot to be announced according to prevailing wind and condi-tions. More than likely this will be near Williams Wharf, and those wishing to go ashore can land dinghies there. The fleet can stay tuned to Channel 68 during the cruise for updated information and any checking-in necessary. We should plan on being underway by mid-morning and try to average 5 knots overall due to the 30-mile sail involved. The timing of this cruise will be right after the stay at home orders for Virginia expire, so stay tuned in this regard. As of this time, the fleet will be planning 'virtual sundowner's' in each individual boat's cockpit, so 'bring what you need'.

Kiptopeke State Park, 19-21 June

“Ahoy, All Condo Cruisers, Want-to-be’s, and even Club dock walkers!

We are planning for and hoping to be able to have our first real cruise of the year on June 19-21st to Kiptopeke State Park. Note that having it is totally dependent upon our State Governor being able to lift the statewide ban against congregating by June 10th. as currently planned.,

After these past weeks of virus anxiety that has resulted in most of us feeling too cooped up and needing a medical injec-tion of “ON BOARD” time, we want to plan to provide that much needed “fix” by getting together and have some well

needed fun.

Beginning on Friday afternoon- April and I will sail over to Kiptopeke State Park – and anchor off the Concrete Ships. Our April Wind will act as the mother ship for the cruise and weather permitting, others are welcome to raft off of us for afternoon cocktails until nightfall.

On Saturday, we will be taking the party to the nearby beach so bring your dink and a reliable motor (or good strong arms) as there is often a current running N/S through the passage. Bring sunning chairs, umbrella’s coolers, etc. and at 5:00 (Somewhere) we will begin to salute Poseidon and will warm up our small grill. I suggest you try to bring a small grill to the beach if you can along with your drink(s) of choice and snacks for the afternoon as well as dinner fixing to share. The plan is for all of us to enjoy being out on the water and together after such a long stressful confinement. Let’s play at being beach bums and bunnies and plan to toast each other and to our good lives as we watch the sun sets to the West over the concrete ships. If by chance the weather is not conducive to beach time together the party on Saturday, you can join April and me aboard S/Y April Wind….just bring your own libations and dinner fixings, including enough to share as I will be grilling off the stern unless the rain gods are mad at us.

Sunday hopefully will offer more of the same fun until it is time to depart back to HYC. April Wind may even be serving Mamosas if you would like to come aboard for a last toast before departing. We will plan to stay awhile and ultimately hoist anchor about 1:30 PM depending upon the weather.

Where: Kiptopeke State Park – Anchorage inside of the Concrete ships. Approximately, 21 NM from HYC. Course

approximate 058 from the High Range marker approximately 1 NM offshore of Fort Monroe’s channel side beach. If you wish to come join us by land yacht, Kiptopeke State Park entrance is only a few miles North of the Eastern end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel roadway termination onto the Eastern Shore.

Why There: This is a great anchorage with good holding assuming the use of the right weight anchor/chain; there is

plenty of room for all of us to anchor overnight and the area is extremely peaceful. It offers a wonderful environment and frequently many species of seabirds can be seen all around you. The park offers nature walks which are currently open, and playgrounds and “facilities” ashore if they are reopened by then, as well to enjoy.

Why: We are joining together to bring in the new cruising season, and to celebrate (hopefully) the passing of the

contagiousness currently confining us all.

What to Bring: April and I will be providing some light snacks and water, and ice to share in one cooler but we will

definitely need more than one cooler for everyone to have cool drinks on the beach over a few hours of time. So, bring a cooler filled with ice if you can.

We suggest that you plan to bring your drink of preference, beach mats or blankets along with appropriate sunscreen, some yummy appetizers to share and what you would like to grill and eat for dinner. If you have portable deck chairs or small cocktail tables, they might really come in handy. Heck, if you still have those old winter socks to burn, bring them along and we will add them to the coals after all food has been grilled!

What you need to do: RSVP to [email protected] or [email protected] that you will be joining your fellow

Condo Cruisers, and then if allowed, GET ABOARD YOUR LONESOME BOAT and COME ON OVER and HAVE SOME FUN!

April and I look forward to getting reacquainted with everyone and meeting new friends. Look for all the Teal colored canvas and we will see you in the Anchorage! We will be monitoring Channel 16 & 68.
