COMMODORE’S LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP

Friends,

Are you taking time out of your busy days staying at home to watch Spring happen? Life is so abundant outside our windows, and feeling the dirt beneath your hands…ah, never mind - I have a sailor’s yard. Who am I kidding?!? But I do love to try my hand at a bit of gardening every year, to see what daring plants are adventurous enough to enter my wicked realm. Then, inevitably, sailing, swimming, boating and other freewheeling adventures crop up in late May and I forget those heady days of spring when everything is so green and healthy…and doesn’t need watering! Why is it that late May seems like a lifetime away from today? This sheltering in place is akin to having a newborn baby at home: the days are agonizingly long, but the weeks just fly by! I need only imagine what healthcare workers and COVID-afflicted patients are enduring, and suddenly my mood lightens and I move on to the next task on my (very short) to do list.

I wish I could tell you what the next few weeks and months will bring for HYC. Alas, I cannot. We are limping along as best we can, given the circumstances. The leadership appreciates your suggestions, patience and patronage more than you know. We are beginning discussions about what our eventual rollout of additional services might look like – not that we have much formal guidance yet. It’s very hard to plan any events and activities when we do not have a timeframe for operations. But as a dear friend and former Commodore of HYC once told me, “just make sure you keep the French fries coming out the door!” So far, we’ve been doing a great job of that thanks to Manager Rich Ash and the jolly band of folks we still have coming in to work each day. As for the future, we’ll keep evaluating the facts we have, innovating our approaches to the issues, and then reevaluating to determine effectiveness.

I hope you and yours are:

Healthy – no illness in your kingdom; Wealthy – received your stimulus check or make too much to receive one! Wise – staying home to keep yourselves and your loved ones safe.

At this time, the pandemic is still going strong. Unfortunately, we are not able to take full advantage of our club. We are still doing the Curbside To Go. The specials will be published weekly through Facebook and our Constant Contact emails. If you do not currently receive Club emails and would like to be added to the list, please email Anne at [email protected].

We regret that we are not able to host our annual Mother’s Day Brunch. In its place we are offering a Curbside To Go Mother’s Day Dinner. Look for the menu in this Mainsheet. Please place your order by 12:00 on Thursday, May 7th. You may pick up on Saturday, May 9th between 12:00 and 5:00. Sunday, May 10th the club will be closed.

The last thing I would like to say is I hope everyone will stay healthy and safe.

MANAGER’S REPORT

Sailing Center News

Dear Membership, Junior Parents, and Youth Sailors,

The 2020 Hampton Yacht Club Junior Program is celebrating its 70th year of providing excellent instruction and leadership in the sport of sailing to Southern Bay youth. The sailing center staff and I are very excited to help develop and grow your skills on the water this summer for those that have already signed up! If you have not registered out of caution due to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, we understand you probably have some questions regarding the additional safety measures that we are taking. This is an unprecedented and fluid situation and as conditions develop, we want to ensure you that HYC remains committed to your health and safety.

The Brady Sailing Center and Clubhouse were closed since Governor Northam’s stay at home orders in mid-March and club fleet assets were grounded. The classrooms have been sanitized and will continue to be meticulously cleaned by our maintenance department to provide a safe environment. Even with these best practices I understand if there are reservations you may express upon opening of the summer program so I would like to share with you some significant updates in procedure that will be instituted this summer.

1. Class sizes will be updated to correspond with Governor Northam’s orders and CDC guidelines for gathered

groups. This number is currently 10 people including the instructor. This would reduce three slots below our normal class size of 12; we will adjust registration accordingly and be happy to work with you to find the best classes for you to fit your needs.

2. Personal refillable water bottles and sunscreen are mandatory and not to be shared with anyone. Students

must also bring their own appropriate USCG-approved lifejacket; there will not be any shared safety or personal equipment.

3. During classroom instruction students/instructor will need to maintain best practices for social distancing and

online briefings for older students may be utilized.

4. Hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes are available at the entrances to both buildings. Buildings will be cleaned by

maintenance staff daily.

5. There will be strict procedures for entering and exiting the Brady Sailing Center buildings. Drop off and pick

up will occur at the Bridge Street entrances. Doors will be propped open and monitored by sailing center staff to decrease contact with surfaces during this time and prevent unauthorized entry.

PAGE 3 MAY 2020

6. Careful consideration is being given to monitoring temperatures and the Junior Advisory Board is working to

finalize a procedure for our response if a student would test positive for COVID-19. The Junior Advisory Board and I are also looking at the best practices for social distancing for inclement weather days when students would be forced inside.

7. The Junior Advisory Board voted to give a 100% refund to those scheduled for any week of classes that may be

impacted due to COVID-19. If a week of classes is lost and you would prefer to transfer your registration to a class held at a later date that will also be available.

In regards to race teams the regatta landscape is still very uncertain. US Youth Championships have been postponed, many CBYRA event planners are looking to move to later dates, and some events have been outright cancelled. One of the problems we are facing as a country is that many youth events have traditionally occurred on week days. With many parents out of work, or those unable to take time off, events are being forced to look at the already over-scheduled weekends. I have been conducting Zoom Meetings with coaches and directors throughout the country and the general consensus is that moving forward we will need to create better local competition to supplement the long distance travel events. Events like the Commonwealth Cup may see a higher rise in competitiveness. There is also hope in establishing a smaller circuit among the local Southern Bay clubs. I am increasingly hopeful that we will have events, but please under-stand the schedule is forever changing and we are committed to providing you with the best opportunities. At this time I do not plan to restructure the race team fee, if a portion of the summer is lost, I intend to add more clinics throughout the remainder of the race team calendar so that you still get the best value for the time we are able to spend on the water and in the classroom. The largest change is that race teams will be offered for a full day to help with parents that need to work.

These changes in our daily operating procedures were developed with the utmost concern for the health and safety of our students and athletes in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. HYC will continue to adhere to the US Sailing phrase of “monitor and adjust.” As sailors we are used to unforeseen challenges and adapting as necessary. As conditions change the Junior Advisory Board, club management, and myself will continue to reevaluate our program requirements as necessary and update you as appropriate.

Please let me reiterate that our top priority is to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff. HYC will continue to monitor and adhere to the government and CDC guidelines in the response to COVID-19 and will keep you informed. Please stay safe and healthy and I greatly look forward to when I can be on the water with you again. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

From the 2020 Southern Bay Race Week event:

Dear SBRW 2020 Racers,

Everyone at SBRW is very sad to be sending this message this morning. SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK 2020 has been officially canceled. With the official "stay-at-home" order extended in Virginia and the entire coronavirus situation, there really was not a way around deciding the cancellation. We will miss seeing all of you in May, but hopefully you will find your ways to Hampton some other time this summer, when all is well.

As to your entry fees - you will receive a total refund of your payment directly from YachtScoring. They will get it to you as soon as possible. There are a lot of events in the same shoes as SBRW, and YachtScoring is working the problem with energy and understanding.

And, please, mark your next year calendar for SBRW 2021. June 3 (opening night), June 4, 5, & 6, 2021 (the weekend AFTER Memorial Day). And, remember, Y'ALL COME RACING in 2021!

Please take care and stay well. Stay in touch, and let us know if you have questions or concerns.

2020 HYC Flag Raising

At their April meeting, the Board of Directors postponed the club's traditional May Flag Raising. At the May Board meeting, they will discuss the regulations in place at that time, the expectations for lifting the stay-at-home order, and then determine whether the event will be further postponed, cancelled, or reimagined to fit current restrictions. Thank you for your understanding.

HYC Casual Cruisers:

Spring is here, the days are getting warmer, the sun shines longer, it’s time to go sailing, at

least that was the plan. COVID-19 has affected us all in some way or another, but not least we have had to cancel or postpone every cruising event through the end of May. As of today’s writing, the Governor’s stay at home order will remain in effect until the 10th of June, but many of us are not even sure what a relaxing of these policies will look like and what it will mean for the cruises for the remainder of 2020. Until then, we will not have any club-sponsored cruises. Our plans continue to evolve, and we are still looking to head back onto the water as a club starting with a Cruise to Mobjack Bay, a Beach Party at Kiptopeke and ending the month with a Cruise to Norfolk Yacht Club.

I really hope that June will bring us good news and that we once again can be out on the water together, although probably with some of the new norms that are a part of our daily lives. Until then my boat seems as good any place to self-quarantine if necessary.

The 2020 Casual Cruiser Schedule is posted on the HYC Web Site, http://hamptonyc.com/yachting/cruising/sailing-cruising/. Please take a few minutes to check out these schedules and if you are interested in joining any cruise, please contact the cruise captain(s) to let them know that you might like to join. This is much appreciated and greatly simplifies their planning. Additionally, if you are interested in hosting a cruise please give me a call, there are lots of weekends still available, not to mention that we still need a long cruise. Volunteers are always greatly appreciated.

Regardless whether you spend your time on a sailboat or powerboat, all can be Casual Cruisers. Time to get underway, Sergio S/V Modus Vivendi (757) 635-1846 [email protected]

Upcoming Cruises

Mobjack Bay, 13-14 June To the fleet sailing to Mobjack Bay... Welcome to the Southern Chesapeake’s best backyard ever! Our Primary Anchorage will be on East River, with the exact spot to be announced according to prevailing wind and conditions. More than likely this will be near Williams Wharf, and those wishing to go ashore can land dinghies there. The fleet can stay tuned to Channel 68 during the cruise for updated information and any checking-in necessary. We should plan on being underway by mid-morning and try to average 5 knots overall due to the 30-mile sail involved. The timing of this cruise will be right after the stay at home orders for Virginia expire, so stay tuned in this regard. As of this time, the fleet will be planning 'virtual sundowners' in each individual boat's cockpit, so 'bring what you need.' Kiptopeke State Park, 19-21 June

“Ahoy, All Condo Cruisers, Want-to-be-s, and even Club dock walkers!

We are planning for and hoping to be able to have our first real cruise of the year on June 19-21st to Kiptopeke State Park. Note that having it is totally dependent upon our State Governor being able to lift the statewide ban against congregating by June 10th. as currently planned.

After these past weeks of virus anxiety that has resulted in most of us feeling too cooped up and needing a medical injection of “ON BOARD” time, we want to plan to provide that much needed “fix” by getting together and have some well needed fun.

Beginning on Friday afternoon- April and I will sail over to Kiptopeke State Park – and anchor off the Concrete Ships. Our April Wind will act as the mother ship for the cruise and weather permitting, others are welcome to raft off of us for afternoon cocktails until nightfall.

On Saturday, we will be taking the party to the nearby beach so bring your dink and a reliable motor (or good strong arms) as there is often a current running N/S through the passage. Bring sunning chairs, umbrellas, coolers, etc., and at 5:00 (Somewhere) we will begin to salute Poseidon and will warm up our small grill. I suggest you try to bring a small grill to the beach if you can along with your drink(s) of choice and snacks for the afternoon as well as dinner fix-ing to share. The plan is for all of us to enjoy being out on the water and together after such a long stressful confinement. Let’s play at being beach bums and bunnies and plan to toast each other and to our good lives as we watch the sun set to the West over the concrete ships. If by chance the weather is not conducive to beach time together the party on Saturday can join April and me aboard S/Y April Wind...just bring your own libations and dinner fixings, including enough to share as I will be grilling off the stern unless the rain gods are mad at us.

Sunday hopefully will offer more of the same fun until it is time to depart back to HYC. April Wind may even be serving Mamosas if you would like to come aboard for a last toast before departing. We will plan to stay awhile and ultimately hoist anchor about 1:30 PM depending upon the weather.

Where: Kiptopeke State Park – Anchorage inside of the Concrete ships. Approximately, 21 NM from HYC. Course

approximate 058 from the High Range marker approximately 1 NM offshore of Fort Monroe’s channel side beach. If you wish to come join us by land yacht, Kiptopeke State Park entrance is only a few miles North of the Eastern end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel roadway termination onto the Eastern Shore.

Why There: This is a great anchorage with good holding assuming the use of the right weight anchor/chain; there is

plenty of room for all of us to anchor overnight and the area is extremely peaceful. It offers a wonderful environment and frequently many species of seabirds can be seen all around you. The park offers nature walks which are currently open, and playgrounds and “facilities” ashore if they are reopened by then, as well to enjoy.

Why: We are joining together to bring in the new cruising season, and to celebrate (hopefully) the passing of the

contagiousness currently confining us all.

What to Bring: April and I will be providing some light snacks and water, and ice to share in one cooler but we

will definitely need more than one cooler for everyone to have cool drinks on the beach over a few hours of time. So, bring a cooler filled with ice if you can.

We suggest that you plan to bring your drink of preference, beach mats or blankets along with appropriate sunscreen, some yummy appetizers to share and what you would like to grill and eat for dinner. If you have portable deck chairs or small cocktail tables, they might really come in handy. Heck, if you still have those old winter socks to burn, bring them along and we will add them to the coals after all food has been grilled!

What you need to do: RSVP to [email protected] or [email protected] that you will be joining your
