Understanding by Design Template for MTSS for Early Literacy

Stage 1 - Desired Results Established Goals Transfer Iowa Teaching Standards 1 . Demonstrates ability to enhance academic performance and support for implementation of the school district’s student achievement goals. 2. Demonstrates competence in content knowledge appropriate to the teaching position. 4. Uses strategies to deliver instruction that meets the multiple learning needs of students. 8. Fulfills professional responsibilities established by the school district. MTSS Goals- 1. Leadership teams will be able to work through the building block questions (WE DO) to apply learning in order to develop a plan for district implementation (I DO). 2. Leadership teams will begin this process K-3 then apply that learning to continue building a district wide MTSS framework.

Teachers/Administrators will be able to independently use their learning to… Ensure that all students will be able to read, write, speak, listen at high levels according to the Iowa Core Standards. Have a quality core literacy program that allows 80% of students to be proficient on screeners that show the likelihood of becoming successful on high stakes testing later on.

Meaning UNDERSTANDINGS

Teachers/Administrators will understand that…

● Instruction and assessment is aligned to Iowa Core ● Differentiation is part of the universal core ● Student data is the basis for instructional decisions ● Building blocks focus on specific aspects of

curriculum, instruction, and assessment ● MTSS is a framework, not a time

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS What should happen during universal instruction to meet the needs of all students? What data can be used to inform instructional decision making? Which building block is a priority for your district and what work will come out of this priority?

Acquisition Teachers/Administrators will know…

● What “protected time” for ELA instruction looks like ● And have a deep understanding of the Iowa Core

Standards ● Quality instructional practices (and what they look

like) that contribute to 80% of students being successful without interventions

● How to evaluate instructional materials for alignment to the major features of the Iowa Core

● How assessment for learning including formative and common assessments inform instruction

● How to work collaboratively with all staff to increase student learning

● The building blocks of MTSS

Teachers/Administrators will be skilled at…

● Scheduling 90 minute blocks of quality ELA Core instruction

● Providing ELA instruction aligned to the Iowa Core ELA Standards (cognitive complexity needs and expectations for grade levels)

● Using research-based instructional practices ● Identifying universal materials that align with the

Iowa Core ● Collecting daily evidence of student learning based

on learning goals and success criteria ● Collaborating with all school staff to increase ALL

student learning in ELA
