Understanding Australia Through its
Poetry and Music
Professor Peter Harmer
Willamette University
Australia is one of Japan's most important foreign partners. In the past thirty years, not only have
trade relations between the two countries increased significantly but tourism and cultural exchange
programs have proliferated. Australia has become one of the most preferred destinations for young
Japanese on vacation and, significantly, for Japanese newlyweds as a honeymoon trip. A measure of
the growing interdependence of the two countries can be gauged from the decision of the Japanese
government to lift visa requirements for Australians visiting Japan as of December 1, 1998.
However, the path to the current state of mutual cooperation has not been without incident - the
Pacific campaign of World War II has colored the attitudes of older generations of Australians
toward Japan. On the other hand, it is obvious that the Japanese have little on which to base their
understanding of what constitutes the Australian character, apart from vignettes of sandy beaches
and koalas. To many Japanese, Australia is America with kangaroos. As interaction continues

between the two countries it is important that the Japanese understand how Australians think of
themselves, where these perceptions originated, and how they have been expressed.
