Letter from Sandro and Peltoma

On behalf of the fraternity and sorority community, I would like to welcome you to the University of North Dakota! I am extremely proud of the Greek community at UND and we are glad that you have chosen to participate in sorority recruitment. The sorority community at UND is composed of well-rounded women who strive for excellence in academics, campus involvement, and community service. My name is Molly Sandro and I have the pleasure of serving as the President for the the Panhellenic Council which is the governing body of the six National Panhellenic Conference (NPC)

sororities on campus. All six sororities, called chapters, compose our sorority community which includes over 500 women, each with unique qualities which make our community special. Participating in fall sorority recruitment is the best way to learn about all six sororities and meet a number of wonderful women. I want to encourage you to take full advantage of all that recruitment has to offer and by the end of the weekend, we hope that you have found your new home-away-home on campus. If you have any questions about Greek Life or Sorority Recruitment, please do not hesitate to email me as I am more than happy to speak with you and answer any of the questions that you may have concerning sorority life.

Again, welcome to The University of North Dakota and we look forward to seeing you in August! Best,

On behalf of the sorority community, I would like to welcome you to the University of North Dakota. We are thrilled that you have chosen to participate in sorority recruitment this fall! Recruitment is the beginning of a journey that offers you an opportunity to meet a diverse and astonishing group of women. Here at UND, all six sororities are wonderful and each brings unique qualities to the Greek community. Panhellenic women at UND pride themselves on being able to successfully balance campus involvement, philanthropic events, community service, social activities, and most importantly, academics. The leadership and tradition that comes with pledging a sorority will promote individual growth, scholarship, service, character refinement, and long-lasting friendships. It is our hope that you find a home within a Greek chapter here at the University of North Dakota. I am so happy that you have made the wonderful decision to come to UND and participate in sorority recruitment! Remember to have fun and make the most of every opportunity presented to you. Most importantly, be yourself and build friendships with the women around you throughout the recruitment process. After all, they could be our future sisters! If you have any questions about sorority recruitment, feel free to e-mail me as I am happy to speak with you further about joining the sorority community. Have a great summer!

Rho Gamma

Rho Gammas 2013Recruitment is

an exciting and memorable experince, but it can be a hectic and

emotional time as well. Recruitment counselors, referred to as Rho Gammas, are undergraduate women representing the six sororities at UND,

who have disaffiliated from their chapters for the weekend of recruitment to help you through the process. Disaffliation means that these women will not reveal the chapter for which they are a member to provide Potential New Members with the unbiased support during the recruitment process. These women have been through extensive training in preparation for this week, and have participated in recruitment themselves. They are available for you 24 hours a day as impartial listeners, guides, and friends. Get to know your Rho Gamma because she will want to get to know you and will help you make the best decision based upon your personality and interests.

Of the nation’s 50 largest corporations, 43 are led by fraternity or sorority members.

Both women appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court were sorority members.

T he Panhellenic Council (the governing body of the sororities) is

responsible for ensuring a fair and ethical recruitment process

for both potential new members and for all sorority chapters. As such,

Recruitment Rules are voted upon each year by the members of the

Panhellenic community. These guidelines are in place to ensure that

The Weekend at a glance

Recruitment Weekend at a Glance...Round 1

Round 2

During the first night of recruitment, you will get the opportunity to visit all six

sororities with your recruitment group. Each party is 25 minutes long, and as such, the night will move quickly. You will be greeted right away by chapter members and welcomed into the party. Feel free to ask questions of the members and tell them a little bit about yourself. Most importantly have fun! The weekend will be over before you know it!

During the second day of recruitment, you will have the opportunity to visit up to 4 sororities for 40

minutes each. During this round, you will receive a house tour which will give you more information not only about living in the chapter house but also about the social activities that the sororities participate in, service that the sororities provide the community, and the philanthropic work that sororities do to support their local or national non-profit organizations. In addition, you will learn more about the financial and time commitment of joining a sorority during round two. At the end of this round, you will be able to recognize the individuality and spirit of each sorority, as well as experience the special bond of sorority sisterhood.

The weekend at a glance

Recruitment Weekend at a Glance...Preference Day

Bid Day

During the morning, you may attend up to two, 50 minute parties. This is the day to really

focus on what you want to gain out of joining a sorority. An invitation to a Preference Party means the sorority is very interested in you becoming a member. After a brief ceremony, you will have the chance to talk privately with a member. During this time, they may share with you how they made their sorority decision, what their sorority means to them, and what sisterhood means to them. This round will allow you to really connect with the chapters and determine which sorority you would be happiest joining.

Bid Day is the most exciting day of recruitment! On Sunday night, you will meet by the Quad

on campus and will find out which sorority your Rho Gamma belongs. After this, you will receive your bid which is sealed in an envelope; your bid is your invitation to join your new sorority. All at once, PNMs will rip open the envelopes and find out which chapter they are a new member! Then, you will meet all of your new sorority sisters waiting for you in the Quad. Enjoy this day! It’s a once in a lifetime experience and will start one of the most exciting adventures in college.

Map/FAQ’s

Map of UND Sororities

Frequently Asked QuestionsHow much does it cost to join a sorority?

Do I need to go to all of the events listed in the recruitment schedule?

If I go through recruitment, am I obligated to join?

What if I only want to be in a certain sorority?

I am a legacy to a sorority. Is there anything I should know?

The average cost for a member’s first semester in a sorority is about $840. The second semester average cost is about $680 per member. Your second year in the chapter, you will typically move into the sorority house. The cost of living in the house which includes room and board is on average $2,230. You will see that this is less expensive than living in the residence halls or living off campus. To help pay for chapter dues, most chapter provide payment plans in which members can pay their dues in installments throughout the semester. In addition, our chapters have scholarships that members apply for to help defray the cost of their education.

Yes! The object of recruitment is for you to learn as much as you can about the UND Greek community, so that you can make the best possible decision. If you intentionally miss events, you could be released from recruitment.

No. Recruitment is an opportunity to explore Greek life and to see if it is right for you.

Only wanting to be in one or a few sororities limits a PNM’s options for membership and can lead to disappointment. Don’t make a decision based on stereotypes or other’s opinions. We encourage you to keep an open mind and make a decision that is right for you.

Each potential new member is considered on an individual basis. Legacies are not obligated to join the sorority that their family member joined and likewise, chapters are not required to pledge a legacy. Houses are considering mutual compatiblity, not necessarily a family connection.
