Background: The United Nations (UN) Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and

Children • The Commission was set up in response to the call in the UN

Secretary-General’s Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health

• For increasing access to and appropriate use of medicines, medical devices and health supplies

• To effectively address leading avoidable causes of death during pregnancy, childbirth and childhood

• The Commission identified 13 essential commodities that could save the lives of millions of women and children

• Made 10 recommendations for how to get these commodities to those who need them most. Among the 49 Every Woman Every Child initiative countries
