1. Object to Lieberman speaking, creates power gradient…isolates Palestinian students, fear of losing jobs. Just objecting to Professor Lieberman, marginalizes Palestinian students….do not have same privilege to speak in front of assembly.

2. POI give speakers microphone3. Debate4. Against

a. Hafsa – 2014 Lieberman came before CSG to offer narrative…clear presented objective view on resolution…his right but not here just as community member, tenured professor and representative of the university. Professor on one side and students on the other. Not allowed same freedom of expression...many professors here support resolution. Means SAFE cannot have equal representation on this stage…student issue and should remain a student issue. Here to talk about ethics. University investments and ethics of those investments.

b. Seth POI other speaker? A- alumni5. For

a. Eli – think he brings wealth of knowledge on the topic, historic background and context helpful for me personally as well. Freedom of speech, teaches course on this topic.

6. Againsta. Zoha – if someone speaking on other side with same

ranking too, equal but opposite, multiple perspectives instead of just one

7. Fora. Seth – esteemed faculty, published in academic articles,

adding more context can only be helpful for people to hear and value

8. Againsta. Jason – second what other people said. Don’t think

balanced or fair, doesn’t have objective opinion, professors for cant speak out for dear of losing jobs. don’t think appropriate.

9. Fora. Izzy – in 2014 Lieberman gave majority of time to

Palestinian concerns on this issue, there are professors that do speak in classroom with strong anti-Israel bias. Lieberman has been harassed by daily since speaking.

10. Againsta. Yara – would be down if another professor able to speak,

have personally asked and they all said they would not be able to because wouldn’t put jobs on the line. Doesn’t create balanced platform with official voice for each side.

11. Fora. Andrew – Lieberman has been criticized publically for

this views, last year did suspend rules to allow non university affiliated speaker for the resolution, power mismatch in that sense I think we will suspend rules to allow non university speaker, provides equity in some sense but doesn’t restore power dynamic fully.

12. Jay

a. If he was coming in separately from for/against debate would hear context but he’s speaking for resolution, there isn’t a parody on both sides, I’m sure he’s very respected.

b. Vote on Prof. Lieberman being allowed in guest speakersi. Will not be added to guest speakers list

c. Ali; motion to add Sammy Lawrenceiii. Motion to add Gaby; Sammy, Sarah; Aviv to guest speakers

1. Who are they? A – students2. Seconded; approved

v. Marzia POI vi. Farah – graduated, author of resolution 2014 and part of SAFE,

Christian not alumni, community membervii. Seconded; approved

h. Motion to approve as amended; seconded; approvedIV. Approval of the Previous Minutes

a. Minutes from 12th meeting of Seventh Assembly on November 7th, 2017 (Sent via email)

Page 4: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

b. Gaby Roth, Sarah Parkes, Aviv Halpern, Sammy Lawrencei. Aviv – good evening, second year law student, urge to vote against.

Don’t speak for law school or any organization just myself. Two reasons should not pass. Doesn’t meet any three prongs in three prong analysis. Would make virtually impossible to do business with Ann Arbor or other cities by law. University analysis – aims to shield endowment from political pressure. Threshold to divest is extremely high. This is a move to put political pressure to take a side not even endorsed by the Palestinian authority. Resolution already fails. Prongs themselves…concern must express broadly and consistently held position over time…behavior antithetical to core values…organization singled out uniquely responsible for problems defined. Each prong must be met. Broadly and consistently – cant simply mean large number. Needs to be overwhelming majority of the student body. Thousands signed against, several groups for, no broad or consistent belief. Entire school of social work supposedly…begs question how many groups do these students represent? Rejected 11 times out of last 15 years. University values, second prong. Antithetical to core values…we value DEI. Perhaps could hold town halls…picks a viewpoint not necessarily shared by Palestinian people. Third prong…uniquely responsible for problems identified. Two in resolution, human rights and settlements and the occupation generally. How SAFE argues companies are responsible…manufactures weapons and equipment. Not clear how companies are responsible, they are saying if you manufacture something you are responsible for what other people do with it. Resolution fails third prong. Not about the conflict. About whether these businesses in particular are uniquely responsible for problem, these are not. Neither side responsible, both are. Even on broad scale resolution fails. Extremely difficult, if passed, to do business with city of Ann Arbor. Michigan legislature passed law. Relating to boycotts and divestment. Will not contract with those how divest from strategic partner of United States – Israel is strategic partner. License to dispose of waste, build a road, fails all three prongs of university’s policy. Would make almost impossible for university to operate.

ii. Sammy – good evening everyone, senior in ford school. Reading professor Lieberman’s notes, opinions mine but facts are his. Who is responsible for conflict…analyzing central claims. Agree current policies are one obstacle to peace. Jews have offered to recognize Arab

Page 5: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

sovereignty in Palestine on multiple occasions. Every offer rejected. Every rejected accompanied by attacks with declared goal of destroying Jewish state. Key Palestinian leaders rejected 1947 decision that both groups have historic rights…policy of PLO…position of Hamas [reads quote]. One can easily sympathize. In practical terms, violence and demands counterproductive. Palestinians chief victims, no doubt. Position deteriorates which creates more bitterness. UN has accepted decision to divide between Jews and Arabs. Attacked all across Israel…never would have built separation wall and expanded settlements. Doesn’t use…could amass rockets and help invade…repeated polls Jewish Israelis say would get rid of occupation if militants would agree to stop attacking, Palestinians do not reciprocate. Begged Palestinian leaders to accept peace. Israel’s actions have been unusually forceful…Iran, Hezbollah, have killed with chemical weapons. Could give more examples far more hideous than anything Israel has done. Why not Hezbollah, Russia, Iran. All involved in slaughter of Syrians. Why not China. Same standards used to criticize Israeli democracy. Citizens on one side, citizens on the other. So-called political prisoners not in jail for saying something but for…Israel ranked 34 in democracy and US 20. Need for impartiality. Why is Israel being singled out. Some say isn’t worst but still do bad things. Some supporters say…deaminize and delegitimize Israel. National leader of BDS has made clear goal, to bring down Israel. Proponents know regents will not divest.

iii. Sarah – senior in psych and CASC. Last year SSW president student spoke for resolution, as student this speaker did not represent me. Applaud UM divest for standing up. Common for Jews to have connection for state of Israel because likely only place to escape if another holocaust. No one is listening to each other, have sat through this resolution 3 times. Heard last week SAFE supporters laughing while peer talked about fear…heartfelt emotions mocked. Justifying hateful actions and creating environment that condones this behavior. Anushka, appreciate community concerns in the Daig last week. Disappointed this issue overwhelmed agenda on our campus climate. Not actually listening to each other. Hatred and misunderstanding, passing will not change issues at hand. Imperative to mention must also be critical of Israel and their policies. Only through dialogue and constant learning to broaden perspectives. Create supportive community…swastikas in dorms. Microaggression last week by

Page 6: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

implying Jewish names. Intersectionality of my identity, privilege of being white, history of oppression as a Jew. Christian Bailey last year, people scolded for being white moderates uncalled for. Not here because complacent white privileged people. Clause stating not attack on any identity. How can you speak for my identity? Dialogue created from individuals speaking from their own experiences. One speaker compared occupation to the holocaust. One military conflict, other systematic mass murder of 6 million people based solely on religious beliefs. Hope CSG will see what passing this would mean to Jewish students on campus. Thank you.

iv. Gaby Roth – last week spoke about connection to BDS – see quote on page 3. They are part of movement. Following said by activist [reds quote]. Most troubling to me. Distinct resemblance of pre holocaust anti Semitic stereotypes. Appalled student government would pass inherent anti-Semitism in movement and resolution. Spoke about dialogue and connections from last year…black list, have to publically condemn. Importance of finding things we could invest in together, excited to work this year and welcome partners. Ask you reject resolution and support constructive causes. Join me in writing resolution that condemns blacklist, advance rights of self determination of Palestine, fundraisers that benefit both sides, continue meetings. To vote no as I did last year is not to vote against Palestinian rights, but that hateful movement has no place on campus. To vote yes would stand with statements to wipe out Jewish people and state.

v. Marzia POI ask questions? A – they ran out of timevi. Motion to extend time by maximum time; speakers do not want to

answer questionsc. Farah Erzouki, Christian Bailey

i. Farah – hi everybody, alum undergrad and public health. Member of CSG great to be back. Something mentioned in previous guest speakers. To student government: not voting to boycott or sanction a company, all outline multinational corporations, included because of specific ties to human rights violations. Going to read part of alumni letter of support [reads quote]. My experience as an alumni over the years…does not exist in a vacuum. Other universities across country who have voted on resolution. Clear growing support. Most universities student governments voted for divestment not creation of committee. Concern that brings highest number of students to resolution. Using CSG as platform to have voices heard. Also recently blacklisted for

Page 7: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

Palestinian work. Effort only intensifying. Commend students of SAFE, want to make sure all keeping that in mind. 3 prongs for consideration. Approaching prongs, many subjective gray areas, act as red tape barrier…as member of university community, ability to engage critically…[reads statement]. Dangerous to be complacent. Language in resolution. Precedence of fossil fuel divestment. One example of community being engaged on divestment [reads statement]. Large possibility administration will not act on resolution as we want them to, your job is to act on student voices. Some counter-arguments we’ve heard. Singling out Israel…every organization has issue it focuses on. Expertise and lived experiences. Other Arab countries that have committed human rights violations…red-herring fallacy. Would love for people who are concerned to write about it…as freshman resolution was presented in conjunction with other organizations…too controversial. This resolution based on SAFE’s mission. Claims divestment causes division…students on this campus will always have different opinions. Voting no or abstaining not a neutral stance. Choice of highlighting minority perspective and voting for human rights. Dialogue can and will happen regardless of vote.

ii. Christian Bailey – community member, live in Detroit, thank you for having me. Accepted here but wound up in California. Weary and tired to be up here. Some may remember me from last year. As student organizer…same picture at every university. Coming together to defend human rights. Pain and oppression here and around world…for hours then students vote against us. Especially in age we are right now, protesting refugee bans, violence against black people. Full of people from across campus who support this resolution. Stanford took us about 8 years to pass, in 2015. Private university, didn’t know what university investments were. You know exactly what they’re doing in Palestine. [reads from resolution]. Asking you to create committee to investigate claims, not divest, simple ask to listen and respond to. Other side of the world but also issue that impacts students in this room. When, if, they are allowed to go home, forced to go through checkpoints, unlivable place, impact members of community. About to enter into community forum. Going to hear a lot of things. Offering criteria to assess what you’re hearing. If unrelated to text of resolution should not be priority for voting. Was said Arabs have most rights in Israel of anyone in Arab countries…racist argument. So-called equality does not relate to oppression of people in occupied territories. Still experience racism and

Page 8: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

discrimination. Not in compliance with state of Michigan laws…not asking university to divest against Israel. [reads quote]. Can make amendment to make…not responsible for BDS movement. Responsible for ethical investments facing members of your community and this university. Financially infeasible…cannot place profits before human lives and oppression. Core of what Dr. King was fighting about, cannot value economic profit over human lives. Duty to figure out what is right and wrong. CSG as representatives and us as larger community. [reads quote]. Not saying white moderate…position you’re speaking about…SAFE responding to requests they made on how they would like to be treated. Our responsibility to listen to what they asked us to do and to follow it. Very simple. How this played out at Stanford. Initially passed failing 2/3 majority, revote following week where two changed minds. No to yes and abstain to yes. You don’t have to act based on fear. SAFE trying to act out of hope for a better future. [reads quote]. Urge to vote yes.

1. Izzy – from my understanding MLK stood with Zionists cause, feel misappropriation of quotes comment? A – one thing about Dr. King can quote what he said in 1960 but cant say what he would say today because assassinated. Can guess what his action would have been today. Stance against Vietnam war, loose quote but pretty close. Militarism, discrimination in Zionist movement…can say no way Dr. King would support people being forced to checkpoints. Anti-racist campaign, don’t believe in discrimination, plain and simple.

2. Seth – how many universities where student governments passed had school passed? A – just one, Hampshire. No illusions about after passage…university will immediately make statement do not support what CSG said and will not withdraw investments. It’s a struggle with the administration. Asking for student body and government, something they have asked for. Don’t need to make decision based on what university will do, what you think is right. [reads part of resolution]. Stakes aren’t that high here. Saying create committee to investigate human rights violations. No reason to not be in favor of resolution. Daily editorial board wrote in favor of resolution 2014 [reads quote].

3. Meaghan – you’ve been on CSG before, mentioned resolution that mentioned other countries and companies? A – brought up

Page 9: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

in past, that singles out Palestinians as concerns not being valid. Blanketing it and allowing voices to be stifled in the process. All investments should always be investigated.

4. Ali – thank you for coming to speak…mentioned doesn’t exist in the vacuum, how not tied to BDS movement that divestment has come out of, apartheid wall on diag by SAFE same group put forward? A – was part of SJP, part of divestment campaign, clearly supported BDS. Weren’t speaking on behalf of entire student body, understood SAFE not CSG, cannot speak for entire student body. Entire student body does not support BDS movement. Can make resolution clear not part of BDS movement. Don’t think needs to…SAFE affiliated, still voting on resolution in front of you.

5. Andrew – can you say 100% divorced from broader BDS movement? A – might be better geared towards authors of resolution, don’t think anyone is saying no support from movement but recognizing what is feasible into resolution and what is being voted on. Some names mentioned as leaders of BDS movement have never heard of…loose movement. People will latch on to one or a few people…use that to be the case for the entire movement…irresponsible and unfair. Have heard FAQ sheet is old might be room for clarification on that.

6. Efe – obviously you have had a lot of experience with these resolutions, in your opinion why are they unable to pass? A – a lot of the perception of divisiveness, not everybody going to agree but a lot might be afraid to support it. Some would say don’t understand or need to know more. More and more universities have passed resolutions at this point, not majority but significant number. Understand clear response to human rights violations.

7. Marzia – connection between this resolution and BDS? A – better for authors to answer…

a. You’re saying this resolution focusing on is product of SAFE? A – yes

8. Meaghan – differences in resolution passed at Stanford and here? A – short answer no, criteria based because we didn’t know what companies were invested in. didn’t vote for committee called for divestment

9. Hafsa – video? A – yes

Page 10: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

10. Ibtihal – person before you said resolution fails to meet three stipulations, thought on fact asking to set up committee to investigate claims? A – goes to original point, this policy is one page on a website, believe three prongs are met and some people don’t. think something a little arbitrary. Committee could further explore.

a. Up to us to determine meets criteria or just important enough for university to consider? A – agree with that

11. Marianne – slideshow was great, thanks for coming to speak. Have you asked other community how they feel an attack? A – been to Israel and Palestine. Security concerns…every conceivable right violated. Logic that checkpoints or bombs are necessary, understand need for security and also same logic used against community here. Trayvon martin example of that. sounded so similar…

a. Jewish students on campus who feel that way? A – Stanford student Jewish occupation stepped back because divided internally. Been out of school for 3 years or so.

12. Zeke – talk of resolution not specifying countries or companies, wondering which would be more productive if that came up in future? A – can pass and also work to have university enact moral and ethical standards. If this was prison divestment instead of Israel…[plays video].

13. Motion to extend time by 30 minutes; seconded; approvedVII. Community Concerns

a. Nadine – speaking as a student, not as vice president of the student body. Speaking on experiences over the past 4 years. Want to thank speakers from both sides. Incredibly uncomfortable. Listen to those stories. First time saying I support this resolution. Want to start by saying hearing Jewish students express how they feel marginalized, feel resolution hurts you as individuals. Don’t want to silence or marginalize anyone. Apologize for My experience as Arab student on this campus. After losign election…people told me didn’t vote for me because am Palestinian and support divestment.

i. Motion to extend time by 5 minutes; seconded; approvedb. Nadine – not Palestinian, but why would that be used against me. Members of

our own team smeared Nicole after founding refugee support group. Devin Jones…try to run in 4 elections. Cant express how much I worried about speaking here. Don’t speak to change your mind but so you can hear opposing

Page 11: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

narrative on this story. As Arab on campus feel marginalized and silenced. Use numbers…needs to be equitable footing. Blacklist so was scared to speak here…care about everyone on campus a lot. Sorry if my opinion offends you. Wholeheartedly support this resolution.

c. Arwa – as Arab, Muslim woman wolverine found community here on campus. Importance of identity being represented. Two women of color leading, unprecedented number of representatives of color. Important to realize still have a long way to go…changes we still need to make on campus. Need assembly to reflect and recognize…students of color have carried weight of making these changes. Unity on campus has moved me to tears, communities of color come together on campus, fortunate enough to witness empathy in it’s purest form coming together…

d. Againsti. Ari – seen both opponents and proponents of this resolution.

Acknowledge and respect stories we’ve heard. Limit to everything, I felt my line crossed, to criticize Israel is valid, to have religious ties criticize last week unacceptable. Comparing conflict to experiences of my grandfather…student body president from sister campus. [reads quote]. Established opinions at schools mentioned earlier…presidents and boards dismissed as unintended direct attacks on Jewish students…as you can see in handouts. Stand in opposition and encourage to vote no thank you.

e. Fori. Haleema – put down phones laptops, telling personal narrative. Told

my story, family’s story. Trauma faced for past 50 years. Uncle shot, farm destroyed, loss of livelihood, cousin beaten, home under order of demolition. Repeatedly destroyed. companies listed in resolution harm my family’s safety and my safety and security during trip to Palestine. Checkpoints use technology from HP…our reality, not just my story. family’s fate tomorrow not violation of human rights? Aiding in destruction of my family’s rights…leaders and best…mission of serving the world…? Last year stood before you…uphold human rights in their context.

f. Againsti. Kyla – student, my experience have shaped me into dedicated activist

against occupation. Recognize my privilege in status quo of conflict. Do not support BDS movement, but believe occupation moral disaster for Israel. Want to end suffering, not speaking lightly. Will continue to work for Palestinian student rights. BDS platform does not ensure

Page 12: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

existence of Israel. True justice recognizes both people’s freedoms. Marginalizes voices and experiences of students on this campus. Should not have to check Zionism at the door. Push Jewish community to learn about Palestinian narrative, problem isn’t going away after vote, responsibility to work to peace and justice all year. We are not soldiers at war, we are classmates, students and friends. People on both sides who want to make the world a better place.

g. Fori. Gloriela – left last year deeply moved and emotionally connected. Not

Palestinian, never been there, realize since that night, as Puerto Rican and woman, moral responsibility to oppose oppression…two weeks ago I and other members of la casa went to csg chambers to voice support. Initially expecting small group to be present. Powerful, beautiful movement, to make heard and visible a cause integral to us as people of color. Elect you as representatives to represent our needs, wants, and opinions…excuse of dialogue. Process will only make campus stronger. That is dialogue in action. Colonialism…pain in our oppression…liberation bound together.

h. Againsti. Rina – junior in LSA, last week SAFE representative tied my

Jewishness to…represents self-actualization of safety for our people. How are these claims not an attack on me and my Jewish identity. [reads quote]. BDS symposium in 2016 held by SAFE. Not saying each author and member believe in ideals of broader movement. Part of larger movement, represent and must be accountable for motives and goals of that a larger movement. [reads quote]. [reads quote]. Just because no swastikas does not mean not anti-Semitism.

i. Fori. Nessma – difficult year advocating for refugees and compels us to

represent Palestinians…have had privilege of visiting Palestine several times…divided highways, sharp contrast in human services. Wall not just an idea in Palestine, it’s a reality, open-air prison to closed one when detained. Ask you to view resolution within scope of human rights and pass.

j. Againsti. Benji – good evening, fourth year student in aerospace engineering.

Past two summers at NASA, spent time in Boeing auditorium. Worked with expensive software…enabled by financial support of Boeing. All machinery, software…to build and test aircraft. Succeed as direct result

Page 13: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

of opportunity enabled by corporate sponsorship. Listen to words of professor [reads quote]. Very notion of divesting from Boeing seems counter to values in pursuing education. Responsibility to promote and support corporate sponsors. To divest from college of engineering.

ii. Motion to extend time by 30 minutes; seconded; approvedk. For

i. Leah – senior in RC, speaking for myself not as representative. Identify as culturally Jewish…incomprehensible to support oppression of others…can protest racist occupation by Israel, of Palestinian land. Have been organizing against Richard Spencer coming to campus, as target now not ally. To stand in solidarity with our Palestinian classmates. Supports Palestinian students too.

l. Againsti. Wes – conflict never played fundamental role in my life. Changed

junior year with opportunity to travel…rich, complex, different opinions, beliefs, backgrounds. Conversation intense, profound, concentrated. Walked in desert…sitting alone in riverbed. Feeling uncomfortable until silence no longer deafening. I listened when it was uncomfortable. We as community must learn to listen when it is uncomfortable and in order to understand each other. All of us share desire for result in peace. Discourse, dialogue, debate and discussion. Divestment seeks to do none of those things.

m. Fori. Andrea – around same time last year, told story about my mother, about

country I call my home. Watched my mother be strip searched and unable to enter her country…all because she is Palestinian. Put in Israeli prison for almost 24 hours. Given stale bread and small cup of water. Deported her to Jordan. People watching live stream called my mother a terrorist. I am told simply asking to create committee to investigate companies is too divisive. Put in framework of being anti-Semitic. I am told need to have dialogue…we hold educational events. We just want a committee… I am anti-Semitic? That is not fair. Completely ignores all of our efforts for unity, for progress, for Palestinian lives. You’re saying no.

n. Againsti. Sarit – hi, junior, dual citizen of America and Israel. Father from

morocco finding shelter in Israel. Drafted into Israeli army. All of is friends died in ambush. Here to tell you why BDS should not pass. Portrays Israel as sole perpetrator of this conflict. 2014, placed on

Page 14: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

lockdown, saying to show no side is entirely innocent or entirely to blame. Israel installed checkpoints, due to these threats. Heard stories of innocent Palestinians, now innocent Israelis. Not similar to south africa – not one side to blame, no broad consensus. BDS should not pass.

o. Fori. Dana – protested on diag, support of my Palestinian brothers and

sisters. Recognize their suffering is my suffering. Believe to not support is to be disingenuous to all people who seek equality and justice. Prepared speech but can only speak from my heart. I ask you today to not be one of those people who walk past suffering. but instead act for justice. Thank you.

p. Againsti. Jordan – these people are good people. CSG partner with our

communities to coordinate efforts, to encourage dialogues. Hope after tonight we can blaze path of mutual understanding together. Human rights issue with sole blame on Israel…egregious mischaracterization. I served as a soldier in the IDF. I have seen the circumstances of difficulties they face…those weapons stockpiled to kill Israelis in 2014…guarded border between Gaza and Israel…relay experiences not to point fingers, but illustrate unique security concerns. Vote no because blame is not solely on Israel.

q. Fori. Jimmy – grew up Jewish…tonight is a chance to say what we value as

a community. Israel and supporters do not speak for us. Stopped participating in all Jewish activity upon coming here. Most Jewish students here don’t go on birthright, show up at this meeting. Anti-Semitic perspective does not represent all Jewish students on this campus. Survey in September…findings…students parsed differences between being Jewish and Israel policy….

VIII. Executive CommunicationsIX. Report of the Speaker

a. Alex – do not have assembly next weekX. Representative Reports

a. Zoha Qureshi – met with Ali, working on women in government panel next semester, looking for interested representatives. Mentorship program for first gen students, looking for representatives for next semester. Elected reps office hours…so students know we can address their concerns. Got elected because we promised we would listen. SAFE has been asking for us to listen.

Page 15: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

Systematically silenced them. Don’t have institutional support. Don’t have professors to speak for them out of fear. They have us. Their issue is worth considering. Need to make sure their issue is heard. From many backgrounds and identities for the first time ever. Still has room for improvement. Group comes with concern even if we don’t understand it ourselves. Need to be a collective front. Need to emerge.

b. Yara Gayar – a lot of claims made about resolution. Want to clarify why it’s not. Anti-Semitic drawings on white board…[reads quotes]. Denounced Richard Spencer, Charlottesville protests…[reads quote]. Policy that is affecting people’s rights.

c. Hafsa Tout – thank you all for being here and showing that this issue matters enough that it deserves institutional platform to be discussed. Was planning to give different rep report about reasons for support and responsibilities. Yesterday morning woke up to notifications from canary mission, blacklist discussed. All laid out on canary mission page…violates privacy, slanders, permanent marks on reputation. They are watching tonight…not to scare anyone but there is immense privilege in your vote tonight. Requires privacy. Ask you to consider as we move to vote on nature of ballot. Represent different marginalized student groups. Saying we acknowledge for first time by passing experience of Palestinian students, nowhere does it isolate or marginalize another group. Written and brought every year to CSG because human rights are human rights. Only asks our csg to recognize a marginalized student voice.

d. Motion to allow more than 3 rep reports and extend time; seconded; approvede. Ali Rosenblatt – want to thanks Hafsa and others for sharing stories, don’t

support blacklist want to make that clear. Worked at Brandeis center, researched forms of discrimination. No hiding this resolution is born from that movement as a whole. I’m sure we can find common ground on policies we don’t agree with. BDS movement and authors have crossed line. See so many double standards - only country – only Jewish country in the world. Why do they not support Jewish self-determination? Whenever we feel targeted, double-standard in validation, outcries here viewed as wrong, inappropriately validate our concerns here. Why do you get to decide if this is anti-Semitic to me? Consistently disregarded…laughed at and dismissed in telling personal stories. Classing anti-Semitism to insist power dynamic at play. As Jewish student, victim of anti-Semitism, view this resolution as attack on my identity. I cannot speak for any identity I cannot hold so ask you do not speak for mine with this resolution.

Page 16: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

f. Seth Schostak – thank you everyone for sharing before me. Blacklist…horrible and oppose in every form. Experiences as facilitator for IGR. I know authors not anti-Semitic, know intention not meant to attack Jewish students on campus. Criticism of state in policies. Hear experiences and stories. What I do not understand is how others can decide if this resolution does not attack my identity. Clause in resolution…implicit biases do not disappear by stating…can only speak from own experiences…insulting and offensive to be told something isn’t anti-Semitic. Israel is the only Jewish state. Inherently connected for many Jewish students. Ethnicity and identity…rooted in cultural heritage. I know intention not meant to be anti-Semitic but this is the way I feel. Further marginalizes groups of students on this campus, voting no and encourage you to do as well. BDS footnote, we all know vote on divestment and not committee.

g. Daniel Greene – condemn any and all blacklists. Thank all individuals on assembly and in this room for eye-opening, productive discourse about our world. Regardless of vote, firmly believe discourse consuming CSG highlights climate issues. Would like to see body propose resolutions seeking tangible, actionable change for our campus. Uphold Michigan difference and pave way for members to come. Community active in since birth on one side of room…campus is a bubble for many Jewish students. Other side, see my friends, fighting for what they believe in. regardless of outcome hope we can rise above results and enact change. Undoubtedly believe condemnable issues in conflict but believe this resolution neither BDS is way forward. have not acknowledged double standards or objective perspective for status quo. Has become justifiable a symbol to both sides.

h. Narmeen Rehman – thanking everyone who shared stories. Wasn’t planning on saying anything but silence is a statement. Reminder to not be complicit in issues on campus…friends who support and are against resolution. Think about what it would be like to be told my experiences do not matter, my opinion is invalid. Does not ask us to take sides on a conflict. Have a moral obligation. Should recommend to investigate in human rights abuses. Should recognize issue matters to them because they have been told for years it does not.

i. Andrew Watkins – condemn blacklist. Progressive liberal. Worked on Bernie Sanders’ campaign. Committed to justice, equality and protecting human rights. Also a Jew, anti-occupation and anti-settlement. Anti-BDS and stand against this resolution. Embrace complexity, have not yet heard about Israeli peace proposals rejected by Palestinian government. Reductionist story told is misleading for our community. Complicated conflict boiled down into simple

Page 17: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

yes or no. truly hurtful to me, my family, attacks my progressive values. Should reject all false dichotomies presented to us. A no vote is not against Palestine or for Israel. Recognition that resolution does nothing to help human rights. Both narratives deserve to be valued, feel it is anti-Semitic, will only further divide our campus. Oppose divestment because I am a progressive. Thank you.

j. Isabel Baer – sat in room one year ago when this resolution was brought. Grandmother reminded me as holocaust survivor must stand up for Israel…this morning my support for Israel equated with white supremacy. Grandfather identified as Israeli…want fellow CSG members to understand underlying implications behind this resolution. Simply attempt to single out and condemn only Jewish state in the world. Recognize Israel is not perfect. Cannot stay silent while others are being persecuted on this campus. Challenge authors, SAFE, pro-Israel community, and us as representatives to do better than this. Stand in sincere opposition because cannot pass flagrant attack on only Jewish state. Intentions versus impact…anti-Semitic and anti-Israel is impact.

1. Brittney and Erica - FLO working w/in SSW to try to pay people in school of SS, also we support divestment it was brought up earlier

2. Alex – can only talk about resolution at hand3. Erica – as part of social work, pay credits to work 912 unpaid

hours. a. Marzia – international student, how many hours a week?

A – between 16-20 hours, so not concern for international students.

b. Lloyd – graduate students got more funding? A – not considered workers. Student learners who make money for places we are placed. Unfortunately can’t be helped by GEO

c. Tyler – from dental school, feel you on required free hours to work. Do external rotations for 9 weeks, stipends? A – no, small amounts for particular transportation but that is it

d. Anushka – second to last resolved clause, retroactive? A – logistical, beginning of fresh school year, can work on restorative justice in winter semester.

e. Max – estimate for numbers? A – SSW does not include parental income on FAFSA, hoping to create a better test than the FAFSA to figure out who actually needs financial aid and who doesn’t, to be honest more symbolic because don’t know if will actually happen even when it passes at school of social work.

f. Rachel – Nursing representative, hours at hospital, what do you think implications on other schools with similar issues will be? A – hope other schools follow suit. Grad schools sort of run in own way right now. Some students get paid for placements and some do not. Should be supporting labor, basic statement.

g. Lake – working for university? A – 700 students, some work for university, some work across states. Hope is that places that can pay will pay and others who can’t school of social work will pick up the tab

who recommended chart, we put in chart with budget layout, will not be used to pay student worker.

ii. Proposed amendmentsiii. Third readsiv. Vote

1. Motion to vote by voice; seconded; approved2. Resolution passes

d. A.R. 7-020 A Resolution to Establish Elected Representative Office Hoursi. Second reads

1. Zoha – met with rules, added some stuff. Will be implementing as pilot program in winter 2018 semester. Afterwards authors will write report and recommendation or not for adding to compiled code. Added rackham student government’s example. More information about how LSA SG has been successful, timeframe for reps to hold office hours. 9am-7pm Monday through Friday bi-weekly. Suggestions about doing office hours together, thought better with one for pilot. Spread out throughout campus, choose one time and place at beginning of semester. Places students are near or can easily access.

2. Daniel – should be obligation to constituents3. Zoha – holding representatives accountable for attending at

discretion of the speaker, separate from regular committee/commission attendance

4. Alex – it would count as an absencea. Marzia – support hard line, how do you monitor? A –

would report via form similar to committee/commission

i. What if I lied? A – would hope represent students…

ii. Some will be more popular than others, if no one shows up?

5. Daniel – addresses visibility on our campus, if no one shows up doesn’t mean it doesn’t count.

a. Rachel – great idea more visible and accountable, more absences allowed, another commitment? A – as of right

Page 21: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

now no but that’s just for the pilot, would think about reconsidering after pilot but no guarantees

ii. Proposed amendments1. Anushka – reason I recommended be specific schools have

office hours, weary of someone asking another hour of time, another burden of unpaid hour of someone’s time, make group office hours

a. Unfriendlyb. Change 24th line whereas clause and next resolved to be

school and college and not necessarily individualc. Jared – equitably, some with 21 and some with 1? A –

can mitigate where we are able and recognize, should make accommodation for those who can

d. Rachel – all proportionally have same amount representing, hard to judge who is busier, how can justify some people have more work, 12.5 hours of class on Monday and in school with one representative? A – (Anushka) just because you require someone to give another hour of their time in a week doesn’t mean they’ll have the time

e. A.J. – entertain allowing reps to form compacts of groups? A – (Anushka) – from constitutional end represent school or college not own campus. Don’t know that having that…understand redundant

f. Secondedg. Vote

i. Amendment does not pass2. A.J. – smaller schools with less reps to form groups that rotate

througha. Daniel - think we just voted on that and that’s something

that could change after the pilotb. Jared – schools like Rackham, less work? A –

engineering students probably have more work than the rest, there are students who can’t because of time commitment.

c. Amendment rescinded 3. Brittney – first resolved add after Friday, unless otherwise

agreed upon with speaker of the assemblya. Friendly

1. Motion to vote by voice; seconded; approved2. Resolution passes

e. A.R. 7-019 A Resolution for the University of Michigan to Investigate Divestment from Companies That Violate Palestinian Human Rights

i. Second reads1. Reema - Thank you for being here2. Reem – hi, sophomore in LSA, Palestinian student. Appreciate

bravery and courage from everyone who spoke today. What we did today here is dialogue. More people come together every year when this comes up. Amazing but not what we’re presenting tonight. Here to clarify what Palestinian students are really asking for. Deserves institutionalized dialogue, just legitimate enough to deserve recognition. Put on blacklist last year for identifying myself as Palestinian who supports divestment. In the end about human rights violations. Why time after time still come up here and speak out for resolution. Cannot sit here and act like university does not play role in human rights violations. Examples of human rights violations: expulsion of Palestinians, denial of right to repatriation, illegal settlements, military blockades and checkpoints, mass incarceration and detention, torture, denial of medical treatment or exams to prisoners. Recognized human rights violations. Affects students on this campus.

3. Reem and Reema - Want to take back from people who have said a lot of things about it…questions, included clauses about committee creation. Divested twice in the past, SA and tobacco. Committee didn’t decide to divest from fossil fuels. If passes tonight board of regents responsible for forming committee. Possible make upon page 7 but ultimately up to the board of regents. Not just to communicate about companies but also implications of divestment. Engineering students on impact on internships. Reason to believe passing and formation will not sever these ties. Precedent with BP…if harmful in the end to divest we don’t want to that’s what committee is for…

4. Reema/Yara – amendments on page…not attack on Jewish identity. Included anti-Semitism clause, were specifically asked for my CSG reps…

Page 23: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

a. Daniel – would you like to continue? A – Ali I know you came to speak after rep report, wasn’t trying to say how Jewish community feels about this was just trying to say how they act out against anti=Semitism. A lot of people said they believe we’re here for targeting Israel as a Jewish state. Anti-Semitism hurts us to the core. In no way, don’t think language conveys that enough. There’s no way we could have worded to make point clearer or not. If clause is bad open to changing it. I am not Jewish so cannot say what is anti-Semitic so not my intention at all, just trying to say ways SAFE denounces…personally have not read BDS mission and don’t put my name on anything that associates.

b. Zoha – define difference between resolution and BDS movement? A – footnote 25 links to BDS website because it emerged out of call for action, would be happy to amend to another website. Want to push back on just because using framework of divest means part of BDS. Just because using divest as non-violent mechanism doesn’t mean have to ascribe to all part of BDS, want to separate ourselves, that is a worldwide movement we are students.

c. Andrew – guest speakers urged us to not think of global nature, why did you give version of history and do you see how as Jewish student have difficulty separating committee and conflict? A – broader history affects Palestinian students on campus. This is about students on this campus. Addressing as students on this campus so we wanted you to understand where we are coming from but in the end about students on campus and our university.

d. Caroline – if you were representative would justify passing to groups of students who now feel victimized by this resolution? A – mentioned in rep report, understand very deep connection many Jewish students have with Israel, want to emphasize this elevates voice of Palestinian students and does not do opposite to any group, to give community voice ever is not to take away the voice of another community.

Page 24: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

e. Lloyd – formation of committee, how will I be for sure this would broadly represent? A – in quotes becomes comes from senate committee report, that’s precedent, assuming regents would make similar decision on committee. Ultimately don’t make that decision

i. Transparent who is on it? A – yes should be, we ask it to be

f. Eli – explain why these companies as opposed to state of Israel in general or other companies that we invest in that do business with Israel? A – mostly military technology companies, easier to…not okay with financial investments in these companies, we know that these companies commit human rights violations

g. Ali – how can separate resolution from BDS movement as a whole, alluding to bigger movement in citing other schools, would be added to schools who have passed “BDS” resolutions, and do the authors know what modern forms of anti-Semitism are?

h. Motion to extend by 15 minutes; seconded; approvedi. Answer – symbolic part, to this campus and university

and students, one of our main advocates. Asked about double standards, really unfair to say for Palestinian students speaking about oppression they face is double-standard, most of our members actively involved in other human rights campaigns so to say we have double standard is unfair quite frankly.

i. Other countries inflicted crimes against Palestinians? A – we are not talking about countries. Not targeting a country. 3 American companies whose involvement in Israel violates human rights law. Last week on diag, those are things we couldn’t control and very disappointed by, and very sorry for anything that came out of that for Jewish students, those not reflected in the resolution itself.

j. Nadine – Hafsa would you agree as fellow Lebanese student that if company violating in Lebanon operating in violation would also agree with? A – hell yeah

Page 25: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

k. Rachel – just for committee but overall goal is to divest, mentioned BP never ruined ties with them, we never actually divested from them? A – (Nadine) I called Boeing and university of Toledo divestment people, Boeing’s justification was that it is not part of evaluating students. (Reem) BP went through committee and didn’t divest and ties weren’t severed after committee, we added clause that if impacts engineering we wouldn’t want to divest

l. Anushka – one main sticking point of criticism from people opposing is if main point is to elevate Palestinian voices…word Israel is mentioned 18 times in this resolution, agreed other countries mentioned, why Israel singled out? A – for Palestinians Israel that is committing these atrocities

i. Hafsa just said other countries infringe on rights of Palestinian people? Answer –breakdown of money invested have specified companies in that realm…Israeli Palestine conflict…unique story to be told

m. Andrew - nothing about endowment or tuition, what changes were and why? A – been in contact with endowment office, chief investment officer said formulating response, called myself, talked to someone who affirmed what I said last time about the department operating surplus capital can choose to donate to endowment

i. Email from office [reads email] discrepancy? A – I think that’s referring to departments basing decisions if they have enough money…don’t want to interpret wrong…tried to bring in person but weren’t able to

ii. (Zeke) – assume happens infrequently enough to be neglected? A – no information or data about that

n. Zeke – seems like something a lot agree on that university should be investigating investments but starting with people some people don’t agree on, would you be open to splitting into two resolutions? A – very

Page 26: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

valid but coming to you as Palestinian students on this campus that’s why coming to you with this resolution

o. Eldar – senate advisory committee look at investment decisions? A – yes assume that is what they do but can’t speak to whether an ongoing process

p. Motion to suspend rules; seconded; approvedq. Elle – why only 3 companies? A – targeted these because

sure of their human rights violationsi. Companies on list of solidarity in addition to

three? A – just focusing on these 3r. Narmeen – explain further statement on other countries?

A – just asking to disinvest not government responses. Eli – can you understand how would be difficult to

separate BDS and resolution? A – irrelevant for outside org to put us on their website

ii. Proposed amendments1. Ali – issue with whereas that says isn’t sweeping attack on

Israel or Jewish identity, propose to strike entire whereas clause page 2

a. Rescinded2. Seth – second page 6th footnote changing title so it isn’t

searchable by these peoplea. Friendly

3. Jay – fourth whereas page 2, not intended to be a. Friendly

4. Izzy – define on page 2, strike equality for all people second whereas last line? A – primarily Palestinian but doesn’t mean we don’t stand for other student rights

a. Rescinded 5. Zeke – switch two, Palestinians and all people

a. Friendly6. Marzia – replace 25th footnote

a. Friendlyiii. Third reads

1. Objection2. Sierra POI how does debate work?

a. Againsti. Andrew – appreciate authors trying to word in

way not anti-Semitic particularly Yara. Not

Page 27: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

saying members of SAFE are but that resolution has undertones, hard to insert clause and declare no longer anti-Semitism in resolution. Merely asserting not part of BDS campaign not shown…intent versus impact…will be championed as victory for BDS regardless…appreciate efforts…

b. Fori. Matt – have opportunity to make a difference on

this campus…committed to DEI as we said we were…not about picking sides…able to stand in solidarity…make more inclusive for Palestinian students

c. Againsti. Elle – first time speaking out about beliefs.

Senior, SI, Jew…sitting here listening to language and speech that is harmful to me. That is for me to decide and no one else. Countless conversations over past few weeks, could have cascading affect on thousands of students on educational opportunities…several scholarships funded by Boeing. Respect freedom to hold any company to high standards, why then being implemented so inconsistently, direct attack to Israel, prayed to every Friday and Saturday. I cannot be quiet any longer.

d. Fori. Yara – just going to say, only asking for

committee to be created, regents get to decide who’s going to be on that committee. Not making political claims on what side is at-fault or not. Just asking to do the same as South Africa…yield time

e. Motion to call previous question; does not passf. Against

i. Ali – understand authors reiterated main point is calling for committee, can’t focus on one side and not the other, you’re implying guilt on one side, essentially divestment resolution. Many resolutions cited from other schools that passed,

Page 28: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

alluding to broader movement, can’t just say it’s a committee because at the end of the day it’s not. Mentioned Israel 18 times, refute point again, have said concerns us as Jewish students, that has been denied. Not condemning all anti-Semitism, only overt. Just don’t think fully acknowledges that.

g. Fori. Haya – not looking at from background but from

face value. Face value is to just create committee. Voting to pass. Yield time.

h. Againsti. Marianne – prepared a whole speech but a lot

touched on already. Do feel up against impossible wall in a lot of ways and no answers to provide for a lot of questions. As representative makes me feel like am in impossible corner. No doesn’t mean you’re not being heard. Not your fault going to be blown out of proportion whatever happens.

i. Fori. Jay – I hear all perspectives of Jewish students

who have spoken today. Biggest issue not invalidating your voices and concerns. Companies solely associated with Israel. Aware complex impacts for Israeli’s and Palestinians. Dialogue…proponent for human rights and responsibility to stand with marginalized groups…should be treated as such, implore to recognize Palestinian voices silenced on our campus. 13 years tried to be heard, don’t have social capital or political power obtained by others on our campus. Face blacklist…liberation of all groups tied to one another. Students deserve to be heard. Will be voting in favor. Yield.

j. Motion to call the previous question; does not passk. Against

i. Izzy – want to touch upon…this morning Jewish students compared to white supremacists in the

Page 29: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

Michigan Daily, SAFE reposted and called it “great,” how is this promoting dignity and respect for all people? Impact versus intent. Talked to a lot of authors, know not your intent, does not match impact…when running last year people assumed divestment views based on identity. One student voice should not be elevated over the other. Yield

l. Fori. Zoha – recognize group marginalized or feel

marginalized and want us to act upon what they want us to do. Then I learn another group will feel marginalized. That’s why we need this community even further. That’s why committee should be made. Yield

m. Motion to call previous question; seconded; does not pass

n. Againsti. Eli – second year as LSA rep. last year

divestment experience left bitter taste in my mouth, reached out, created a dialogue group with pro-Israel and pro-Palestinians. Heard stories, connecting with other side, heard about personal connections. Stories have helped me understand…however as representative cannot support, understand how hard it is to get up there and do this work.

o. Fori. Narmeen – very jumbled, we are all against anti-

Semitism, they will continue to stand with Jewish students and against anti-Semitism. Had preconceived notions before joining CSG. Talking about after-effects after vote but haven’t talked about past after-effects…Palestinians come to tell personal stories and put everything on the line. Change doesn’t happen if you don’t stand up for being who don’t have a voice

p. Against

Page 30: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewSeventh Assembly. 13th Meeting November 14, 2017. Minutes. Call to Order – 7:40pm. Opening Roll Call. Approval of the Agenda. Motion to

i. Caroline – not Jewish, not Palestinian. Position I have come to upon conclusion. Position made in past is to ask…to remove bias and make playing grounds even…I think is false assumption. University doesn’t already make intentional stance against Palestinians, divestment is asking university to take a stand.

q. Fori. Jason – not Palestinian or Jewish, important for us

to stand up for universal human rights as has been said before. Marginalized people who haven’t been listened to.

r. Againsti. Rachel – junior in nursing, confident none of the

authors are anti-Semitic. Keeps being brought up just a committee but I feel it’s a statement. SAFE stands for equality and freedom, Jewish community members have spoken about how they feel marginalized by this resolution. Anushka brought up wonderful point perhaps Israel not only country involved. Voting no not necessarily saying trying to silence Palestinian community by any means, other ways to have voices heard.

s. Fori. Hafsa – talking to representatives, we have come

to view as inevitably harming one community or another so people start to think which community is more deserving or can tolerate the harm more. Voices elevated over each other…heard a lot from reps and concerns that substitute for resolution is dialogue. Would never be together in this room talking about issues were it not for this resolution. Still a concern that affects every single day that they spend on campus. Seeks to establish committee, by voting no you are silencing Palestinian students.

ii. Motion to call previous question; seconded; does not pass

i. Zeke – sorry if no one else wants to be here right now. Gals on stage, done so much work, have so much passion, have inspired me, I’ve heard you, think we should start committee to investigate all investments, if you want to work on later with me I will do it. Way now I don’t feel comfortable voting for it.

u. Fori. Ibtihal – wanted to talk about own experience on

campus with this resolution. Talk about dialogue all the time. Year after year, people go up and say stories, then debate people say the same thing over and over again. Dichotomy of elevating one student voice over another doesn’t make sense…3 years ago voted to table indefinitely. Resolution today product of the past. Symbolic to me in reaffirming Palestinian students have a voice.

v. Againsti. Sierra – wasn’t planning on speaking tonight,

have received alarming amount of messages from my constituents. To continue would send unmistakable message to Jewish community that we stand against them…only honoring one side of the equation.

w. Fori. Brittney –reps have used proper and appropriate.

Heard folks talking about job opportunities when there are human rights violations at hand. Conflation of this resolution with BDS. Pieces chipped away to come up with movement many of you say you support. Potential picked up by canary blacklist. What if folks against picked up and called heroes. Spirit of resolution, disproportion something have put a lot of work into. What I’m addressing right now…someone asking you to look into your oppression is not denouncing everything you stand for or your identity.

1. Motion to vote by secret ballota. Objection b. Will – SGC – not making statement on debate,

informing, p. 24/25 operating procedures. 2/3 vote. Elect 2 tellers to run election. Yes, no, or abstain. Transparency and accountability of utmost importance. Immense pressures unique on other side. Threat of blacklist.

c. Againsti. Andrew – had resolution tonight passed

unanimously, core principle accountability and transparency, urge to believe in those principles. Blacklist is awful.

d. Fori. Lloyd – message of symbolism of blacklist is

awful, to be labeled a terrorist is disgusting. People on stage have felt this. Secret ballot is to protect them. Understand idea of transparency but this is protecting one another.

e. Againsti. Jesse – senior in computer engineering. Not part

of either side. Intention versus impact. Intention transparent and forward. recognize every person who has stuck their neck on the line. Need to consider possibilities of blacklist and transparency.

f. Fori. Zoha – author of resolution about increasing

transparency that just passed. But this is a very unique issue as mentioned, not just about stance, about personal affects of making stance. Can’t stop blacklist. People on blacklist future’s relationships, peers jeopardized. Basic human rights and those of our own constituents.

g. Againsti. Rachel – promised to represent constituents and

have to stay accountable for that. h. For
