Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for
the Transformation of the World?
What does this mean to you? I have always
thought that this mission statement of the United
Methodist Church was the most perfect mission
statement! It’s stated very simply and to the
point! But, as I was talking with some folks
recently, I realized that this doesn’t make sense to
some people. It doesn’t spell out the basics...the
who, what, when, where, or how...just the why -
and even the why part is sketchy. What does
“transformation of the world” mean? I was
asked...isn’t changing the world too big and too
general?
So, what does it mean to you?
For me, I have always read this statement through
my own lens. It reads like this: Teaching people
to follow Jesus so that one day the whole world
will proclaim Jesus is Lord.
It starts with making a difference for one person.
And that starts the ripple effect like a pebble
plunked into a pond. Eventually, the ripples reach
the very outer edges of the pond - in the same
way, that the good news about Jesus will reach
the very outer edges of the world. The who,
what, when, where and how are up to each one
of us! Because we are each uniquely gifted, we
teach people about being a follower of Jesus in our
own ways! For me, I may spend time with
someone and share from my experiences and
learning to follow Jesus. For you, it may be that
you are willing to spend your time and talents
fixing something for someone who can’t fix it
themselves. Or, you may sew a quilt or knit a
blanket for a new baby or a senior citizen who
needs some warmth. Perhaps you are the kind to
drive someone where they need to go! We make
disciples in all sorts of ways that we might not
even realize because we operate out of our desire
to share the joy and the goodness we have known
because we know Jesus! Because of Jesus, our
own world has been transformed!
How do you make disciples for Jesus Christ for the
transformation of the world?

Leadership Team Report
April 15, 2019
Attendees: Pastor Christina Miller, Roger Hoover,
Peggy Gilbert, Bob Becker, Doug Bowers, Jill
Bowers, Bob Miller, Bev Miller, Mike Ferriell, John
Yancik, Sylvia Koeller
Opening Prayer and Devotional: Pastor Chris led
us in a short devotional, followed by prayer.
Pastor Chris:
Memorial Fund Discussion: All of our memorial
documents concerning money and a committee
are very old, ie 40ish years old. After much
discussion, the leadership team settled on the
following guidelines for the Memorial Fund.
Any money designated by the giver for a particular
memorial will only be used for that memorial.
When a gift is given in memory of any individual,
the family of that individual will be consulted about
the choice of an appropriate memorial.
All other material gifts along with any gifts where
the individual or family do not make any specific
requests, will go to the general Memorial Fund to
be used for projects recommended by the
Leadership Team.
Under no circumstances can any Memorial Fund
money be used for current operating expenses
(eg: payroll, utilities, etc.) for the church or
parsonage.
A new line item in the budget under Hospitality will
be added. The line item will be entitled
“Bereavement Fund”. This will be used for funeral
meals (meat, paper products, etc) as well as flowers
as needed.
Now in Memorial Fund is now $5881. Pastor Chris
has a few requests.
New portable podium not to exceed $300. (Our
current portable podium is showing some wear and
tear. It does not help us put our best foot forward
when used at funeral or wedding guest book signing
stations.)
Directional stands with signs: 5 or more Poster
Stands
A motion was made by John Yancik, for up to $800,
to cover all the requests for Pastor Chris, and
seconded by Jill Bowers and Bev Miller. Motion
passed.
Keyless entry was discussed for the Glass Doors.
This will be required further discussions and
investigations.
Financial/Treasurer’s Report: Bob Becker, John
Yancik, Peggy Gilbert
A motion was made, by Bob Miller, to take the
funding for the wifi upgrade and new microphone
from the Memorial fund. It was seconded by John
Yancik. Motion passed.
Parsonage Rent discussion/decision, A motion was
made, by Bob Miller, to allow the Trustees to
receive the first amount of money up to the
amount of $6,000 from the parsonage rent, in order
to repair the roof. After the first $6,000, the rest of
the money will go into the general fund. It was
seconded by Mike Ferriell. Motion passed.
A discussion about Apportionments took place. The
church is currently setting aside $300 a month in
order to pay toward apportionments. This amount
is in addition to any special offering that is made
toward apportionments by individuals. This amount
is far less than our annual obligation for
apportionments but is an effort to work toward
meeting the expectation. Finance Committee will
review the apportionment giving three times per
year (May 1, September 1, & December 31). Last
year, we were able to give 50% of our obligation to
the District and Annual Conference. This is a step
Reaching the Heart of Brookville with the Love of Christ! 5
in the right direction!

Memorial Fund
Light the Way Campaign
“I believe our next faithful step is to focus
on taking a bold leap here in West Ohio in
starting new churches and strategically
revitalizing others so that “more people,
more young people, more diverse people”
meet the Risen Christ who yearns to be in
relationship with each of us.”
– Bishop Gregory Palmer
This year’s Special Offering at Annual Conference will go to support revitalization of established
churches and new church starts in West Ohio conference through the Light the Way initiative. If you
would like to contribute to this special cause through the special offering—you can find envelopes in
the narthex. Roger Hoover will hand-deliver this offering at Annual Conference June 2-6, 2019.
At the last Leadership Meeting - Leadership discussed the Memorial Fund as we have had several contributions this year. Here is an update on what was discussed and decided: How is Memorial Fund Money Spent?
1. Any money designated by the giver for a particular memorial will only be used for that memorial.
2. When a gift is given in memory of any individual, the family of that individual will be consulted about a choice of an appropriate memorial. 3. All other material gifts, along with any gifts where the individual or family do not make any specific requests, will go into the general Memorial Fund to be used for projects recommended by the Leadership Team.
4. Under no circumstances will any Memorial Fund money be used for current operating expenses of the church (eg: payroll or utilities for church/parsonage)
A new line item in the budget has been made. Under Hospitality, there is a new line item entitled “Bereavement Fund.” This was developed to provide money for funeral meals (such as meat, paper products, etc) as well as flowers as needed.
It is our sincere hope that this will clear up any confusion about how Memorial Contributions will be
allocated.
