FOOLISHNESS

Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it in today’s readings.

We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that message before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19).

This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48).

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Stewardship

In today’s first reading, the Israelites are urged to

love their neighbors as themselves. In the Gospel,

Jesus spells out how we are to do that—to give

generously to those who ask of us and not to turn

our backs on those who seek to borrow.

Vision: To make God, Father, Son & Holy Spirit—known, loved and

served.

Mission: St. Bartholomew is committed to forming dynamic Catholic

Christian disciples through prayer, the Word, Sacraments and

Evangelization.

You are invited to participate in The Wild Goose series on the

Holy Spirit on Sundays. Class will not be held this Sunday, Feb. 23,

but will resume on March 1st at 9:15 AM and consists of a short

video and discussion. We will meet on CCD Sundays in the

Parish Hall between the masses. Just grab a cup of coffee and

"The King and His Kingdom" Your adult faith formation committee would like to encour-age you all to, instead of 'giving up something for Lent', go the extra mile and 'do something extra' for Lent. We're still

in the mainstream of the bible study of Matthew--'The King and His Kingdom'. In the last 6 sessions we will study topics like 'The Trial of the Christ', 'The Passion of the King' and 'The Triumph of the King'. How appropriate for the days leading up to the Paschal Triduum. We all never imagined that we could learn so much about our Faith. Please come and join us. Also, there are a number of quality Lenten Daily Partners out there that you can use as a Lenten guide to the Cross of Christ on Good Friday. We're recommending that you take a copy of the one that we are supplying at no cost - available in the Narthex of the Church. We wish everyone a solemn and fulfilling Lent.

Middle and High School Youth Group:

Sunday, March 1st: Middle and high school youth and their parents are invited to join us for a teaching mass at 4:30pm. Father Victor Ingalls, Archdiocese of Mobile Vocations Director, will host a teaching mass in our church followed by a meal in our parish hall. Join us and bring a friend to learn more about our faith!
