ENRONBy Lucy PrebbleDirected by Rupert Goold
“All humanity is here. There’s Greed, there’s Fear, Joy, Faith, Hope...And the greatest of these... is Money.”
Boasting a host of awards including an Olivier Award, the most talkedabout show of 2010 lands in Dublin direct from an extended run inthe West End.
In this energetic and exuberant production, one of the most infamousscandals in financial history is transposed into a unique theatricalexperience. Inspired by real-life events and using music, movement andvideo, ENRON follows a group of flawed men and women in a narrativeof greed and loss, reviewing the tumultuous 1990s and casting new lighton the financial turmoil in which the world finds itself today.
Directed by Rupert Goold of the groundbreaking Headlong Theatre(winner of the 2010 Best Director Olivier Award for ENRON), thisuncompromising mix of political satire, modern morality and multimediaspectacle, gives an exhilarating answer to the sixty billion dollar question.
Presented in partnership with the British Council.

CIRCADirected by Yaron LifschitzCreated by Yaron Lifschitz and the Circa Ensemble.
Following a triumphant international tour including a sell-out run inEdinburgh, CIRCA comes to the Festival amidst a blaze of rave reviewsand international public acclaim.
A brand new creation that remixes three previous works which havewowed audiences at Galway Arts Festival in recent years, CIRCA ismovement at its most adventurous and dangerous. Combiningacrobatics, dance, light, sound and video, seven performers move fromhighly complex tumbling sequences, to fast-paced flashes of greatintricacy. Using a powerful soundtrack ranging from Leonard Cohento Aphex Twin, this marks a new kind of circus, at once poetic, sensualand immense.
Circa’s signature style combines physical beauty, formidable circusskills and an integral use of sound, light and projection. By fusingcontemporary dance with circus, combined with a mix of newtechnologies and theatrical flair, they have developed a style thateludes concrete definition. But what they do has amazed, astonishedand thrilled audiences in over 18 countries around the world.
Breathless and breathtaking – prepare to be astounded!

TALKING THEATREGrzegorz Jarzyna in conversation.Oct 1, Post-show 9.45pm (approx.)
“Coming tomorrow” is all the perplexing telegram says. For a wealthyindustrialist and his family, it turns out to be a wildly inadequate warningof the irresistible force that is about to rip through their structured lives. In a hypnotic series of near-wordless scenes, a mysterious visitor willseduce each member of the family one by one. Is this stranger a demon,or is he heaven-sent? Will he deliver salvation or destruction?
Inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1968 cult film Teorema, the trailblazingmulti award-winning Polish director Grzegorz Jarzyna has crafted apoetic and provocative piece of theatre that takes its audience on anexquisite voyage into the heart of Pasolini's modern masterpiece.
Last seen in Dublin with Festen at the Abbey Theatre in 2004,Jarzyna’s work has been astonishing audiences in Edinburgh, LA andbeyond. T.E.O.R.E.M.A.T., described as the standout work of the 2010New Zealand International Arts Festival, is a hypnotically beautifulexploration of the social, political and religious ideologies which madePasolini one of the revolutionary thinkers of his time.
A near wordless production performed in Polish with English surtitles.
Contains nudity, scenes of a sexual nature and strong language.

National Stary Teatr, KrakówPoland
FACTORY 2Written and Directed byKrystian Lupa
The Festival is delighted to welcome to Dublin for the first time one ofEurope’s theatrical giants Krystian Lupa, with his monumental award-winning production, Factory 2. This epic creation revolves around thebohemian glamour of the notorious Andy Warhol Project and hislegendary loft in Manhattan’s 47th Street.
Blending Warhol’s own video works with improvisation and performance,Warhol and his entourage’s exploits are meticulously re-imagined from aperiod of utopia to a stark present day reality. With staggering sequencesthat are both beautiful, intoxicating and desperately sad, Warhol himself isportrayed as a timid and omnipresent director – both exploiter and voyeur.Featuring the staggeringly talented actors of Kraków’s famous Stary Teatr, arguably Poland’s leading ensemble, this durational piece of total theatreis a profound meditation on the very process of making art.
Honoured with the French Order of the Fine Arts and Humanities amongsta plethora of awards, Krystian Lupa is widely regarded as the patriarch ofPolish theatre and sits amongst the great theatre directors in history. WithFactory 2 – winner of the illustrious Europe Theatre Prize – the Festivalis proud to present one of the most astonishing pieces of theatre Dublinmay ever experience.

THE DANTON CASEBy Stanisława PrzybyszewskaIn a version by Jan Klata
The ‘enfant terrible’ of Polish Theatre, Jan Klata, crashes his way to theFestival with this truly anarchic, playful and idiosyncratic adaptation ofa renowned Polish play on the French Revolution.
Set in Paris in the 1790s during the tumultuous days of revolt, TheDanton Case mischievously plots the downfall of leader Danton byhis arch rival Robespierre. In Klata’s hands this classic play becomesa theatrically rebellious investigation of post-communist Poland, usingan historical prism to explore current political woes. With badly fittingwigs, bosom-busting costumes and chainsaw-wielding choruses, wewatch the fall of one of the great leaders of the Revolution, in a seriesof grotesque cabaret-like scenes to a thumping punk rock soundtrack.
Winner of a staggering 25 awards worldwide including the Grand Prixat the Kontakt International Theatre Festival, The Danton Case is anelectrifying and highly entertaining theatrical romp.

Rough MagicIreland
PHAEDRAIn a new version byHilary Fannin andEllen Cranitch.Directed by Lynne Parker
Rough Magic returns to the Festival with this hugely anticipated newshow, which probes the forbidden desires lurking within an exceptionallyvolatile family.
The timeless story of Phaedra’s dark obsession with her stepson isplaced in a contemporary Ireland that has become a fertile playing fieldfor the capricious gods. Racine’s masterpiece of the French theatre –itself drawn from Euripides – and themes from the baroque score ofRameau’s operatic response to this mythic tale, have provided thespringboard for a dynamic collaboration between writer Hilary Fanninand composer/musician Ellen Cranitch.
Through Fannin’s scathing humour, Rough Magic’s powerful productionexplores the extremities of passion, and the psychology of a doomedfamily in its attempts to outwit fate. The music is performed live by anensemble of Ireland’s leading musicians, under the inspired directionof Ellen Cranitch.

L’EFFET DE SERGE
On Sunday afternoons in his living room, Serge presents miniatureperformances for small groups of friends. Using low-tech specialeffects and a lovingly chosen soundtrack, these home-grownspectacles inadvertently communicate the very nature of art andthe human desire to create it. In these delightful micro dramas, onesomewhat eccentric man demonstrates how the simplest object, themerest gesture, can produce wonder.
French theatre maker Philippe Quesne has fast developed asignificant international reputation and his work now comes to Dublinfollowing runs around the world from New York to Brazil. L’Effet deSerge humorously investigates the implicit futility in our daily routinesand the magic that can be found in the ordinary. THE REHEARSAL,PLAYING THE DANEText Hamlet by William ShakespeareDirected by Gavin QuinnDesigned by Aedín Cosgrove
There’s something strange in the neighbourhood of contemporaryDenmark. Who are you going to call? That is the question.
In Pan Pan’s purgatorial presentation of Shakespeare’s classictragedy, you the audience are faced with a choice: who is going tobe, or not be, Hamlet?
Actors compete to play the title role but as we enter the graveyardworld of this icon of individualism can anyone escape playing the‘Great’ Dane? Aren’t we all the main part?
Hamlet, seen as representing the limits of human consciousness, isa man caught between the ages. He knows the old is obsolete, yetthe new age has barbarian features he cannot stomach. But if he getschosen to play the Dane, he’s going to have to – funeral meats and all.
To audition or not to audition? But the real question is: how thehell are you going to learn all those lines? Come find out with theirrepressible Pan Pan...

Teatro en el Blanco
From the rolling imagination of writer-director Guilermo Calderón, comesthis politically charged, haunting drama about a near-future war in Chile.
Peppered with large doses of pitch-black comedy, Diciembre takes placeon Christmas Eve 2014 in Santiago, a city besieged by Peruvian forces.Young soldier Jorge returns home on leave to celebrate the holiday withhis pregnant twin sisters. When they discover his plans to defect, bothreact sharply revealing their fiercely entrenched opposing views of the war.
Fast, funny and intense, Calderón strips away the conceits of war andgives us a bracing look at racism, nationalism and pacifism. Coming directfrom the Edinburgh International Festival, Teatro en el Blanco is certainto captivate Dublin with its emotive, visceral and razor-sharp theatre.
Performed in Spanish with English surtitles.
Contains strong language.

Following a 12-month sold-out New York run, and a major NorthAmerican tour, Nilaja Sun’s OBIE Award-winning No Child… makesits Irish debut at axis: Ballymun during the 2010 Festival.
Inspired by Sun’s years as a teaching artist at high schools in the Bronx, this tour de force is an insightful and often hilarious look into New YorkCity’s public education system. Her lightning-quick portrayals of themany characters inhabiting the city’s school structure – includingteachers, students, parents, administrators, janitors and security guards– provide a touching and humorous examination of the universalchallenges facing education everywhere. Offering hope and belief in abetter, more caring society, this multi award-winning production is ahighly original and inspiring work from an extraordinary performer.

ReViewed is a showcase initiative of Culture Ireland, IrishTheatre Institute and Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival. This curated programme will be presented during the Festivalto an invited delegation of international programmers andpresenters from key festivals and venues worldwide.ReViewed offers an opportunity to promote Irish theatre aswell as reviving successful Irish work for Festival audiences.
This year four very different Irish productions from the last12 months will be presented. A stirring permutation of soundand visuals Una Santa Oscura; one of Samuel Beckett’s mostversatile plays, Act Without Words II is taken to the streets;and a show for all the family, the joyful The Girl Who ForgotTo Sing Badly, will travel to three different venues as part ofthe Festival’s ongoing commitment to bring theatre whereyou live. To top it all off the irreverent Ponydance will performtheir outrageous hit Where Did It All Go Right? late night atthe Odessa Club (see page 65).
REVIEWED
www.dublintheatrefestival.com
With two contrasting characters living in separate sacks, Act WithoutWords II is one of Samuel Beckett’s most universal and versatile plays, and Beckett specialist Sarah Jane Scaife is bringing it to the streets –literally. Set in the stage-door laneway of one of Dublin’s most famoustheatres, in the present day with all the problems of homelessness anddrug addiction, this play resonates with a power that is both chilling andall too familiar.
Following its runaway success at the 2009 Absolut Fringe, Scaife’sexpertise in movement, and intimate experience of the subject matter, makes Beckett’s Act Without Words II a stirring, provocative piece whichis performed by Raymond Keane (Barabbas Theatre Company) andBryan Burroughs (The Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards Best SupportingActor 2009), two of Ireland’s most talented physical theatre artists.
Please note that this performance is staged outdoors – appropriatedress recommended.

Somewhere in a city, a young woman sits in a bedsit, alone with herviolin. Thoughts race through her mind as she goes about her day.
This multi-sensory performance is a collaboration between some of themost exciting artists in contemporary Irish music and theatre. Originallyinspired by the life and music of 12th century visionary Hildegard ofBingen, this evocative combination of sound and visuals creates atangible sense of a life explored on stage.
Like an opera without singers, this meditative and moving wordlessperformance combines virtuoso violin with a haunting electronicsoundscape. Created by leading Irish composer Ian Wilson, performedby acclaimed violinist Ioana Petcu-Colan, and directed by rising starTom Creed, Una Santa Oscura delves into one woman's solitudeand loss, creating a truly original and memorable experience.

Sometimes it takes a girl sized human to solve an adult sized problem.
Peggy O’Hegarty and her parents are packers. They squeeze fruit intotins, foxes into boxes, even bikes into brown paper bags. And all thewhile Peggy sings with the voice of an angel – a grossly unfortunateangel, who can’t sing at all.
But one day work stops working, and the jobs stop coming, and Peggysteps outside to find Winter has arrived… and everyone in her city gone!
As Peggy desperately tries to save the day, the audience is led on anuntamed adventure that crosses snowy lands and wild seas. Throughone plucky little girl, we learn about love, loss, the reassurance of goats, and the courage to sing gloriously on or off-key.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience the combined, celebratedtalents of director Lynne Parker, performer Louis Lovett and playwrightFinegan Kruckemeyer.

Take a bow!
The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world. The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth
2.4 billion directly a year. The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport, for 2010 is 69.15 million, that’s less than 1 a week for every household.
So, at the end of your next great theatre performance, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself!
