Welcome from Jenny Tooth OBE, Chief Executive, UK Business Angels Association

Welcome to the UK Business Angels Association Winter Investment Forum 2015. I should like to express our thanks to Level39 for hosting this event to start the investment year and express our appreciation to Eric van der Kleij and colleagues for their support. I should also like to thank JustInvesting, an innovator in online investment, for their support as Silver Partner for this event.

The recent Scale-up Report, commissioned by Sherry Coutu CBE, identified the lack of scale-ups in the UK and the need for a more co-ordinated effort across all key players in the ecosystem to address this. Businesses backed by angels achieve vital early stage finance and angels play a key role in supporting the scale-up and growth of UK’s businesses.

With this mind, our Winter Investment Forum 2015, is focusing on the topic of “Connecting for Growth” where we will be reviewing how we can create a more connected environment for successful scale-up. We will be hearing from over 30 speakers and panellists today and are delighted to be joined by some of the most successful entrepreneurs in the UK: Brent Hoberman, CBE, Brett Akker and Richard Gibson who will speak about their experiences in building great businesses and also now angel investing, bringing valuable experience to scale the next generation of businesses.

We have contributions from a range of leading finance players who will examine how we can create a more joined-up approach, including taking a look at the role of Corporates in supporting angel-backed deals. Some highly experienced and new lead angels will be telling us about their approach to building businesses and we will also look at the value of taking a sector specific approach to mobilising angel investing. We are also very pleased to be joined by Keith Morgan, Chief Executive of the British Business Bank, who will give us insights into their strategy for building a connected finance value chain for the UK.

We will also hear about one of the latest initiatives here at Level 39 in supporting Smart Cities as an important new technology area, offering opportunities for growth and investment.

Understanding the changes in the angel market since the financial crisis and the impact of angel investing in supporting business growth has been the focus of our Nation of Angels Research campaign this past year, which UKBAA has carried out in collaboration with the Centre for Entrepreneurs. We are delighted to be presenting today the findings of this research representing the largest survey so far for the angel market and which has been carried out by the Enterprise Research Centre and we are grateful to Barclays, Deloitte and BVCA for their support.

I should like to conclude by expressing my thanks on behalf of UK Business Angels Association to our sponsors for their continuing support of our trade association, including our strategic sponsors: Lloyds Banking Group, Nesta, PwC and Deloitte and also our partners, Barclays, BVCA, Manchester Business Solutions, Creative England.

I hope that you will find this day stimulating and informative and hope that if you are not already part of our community, you will consider becoming a member of our trade body and keep in touch with our activities through UK Business Angels Association during 2015.

Helping businesses achieve their ambition is key, but having the confidence to challenge with robust advice and the commitment to keep them going in the right direction is what our clients value the most.Deloitte has created UK Futures, a multi-year programme to assess and facilitate how business can drive UK growth. The aim of this strategic initiative is to identify the key opportunities and challenges facing British business and articulate the key interventions that would enable these businesses to both create and capture value in the changing global landscape. As part of the research underpinning UK Futures, we analysed the fastest growing medium-sized businesses (with revenues between £30 million and £1 billion) in the UK. On average, each BLB firm expanded their employment headcount by 60 new roles a year over the last three years. The combined revenues of the BLB1000 totalled £158 billion, the equivalent of 9.2% of national GDP. Over the last three years they have increased their annual revenues by around £30 billion – that is 44 pence for everyone in the UK. With over half of the BLB1000 are based outside London, their contribution to regional growth is helping create a more balanced economy. We take pride in our clients’ successes and support the fastest growing, most entrepreneurial private businesses throughout the lifecycle of their enterprise growth. In addition to our client work, we also have in place a range of activities to champion emerging companies, including the Deloitte UK Technology Fast 50, and Deloitte Social innovation Pioneers.Using this insight, Deloitte – Private markets will host a series of events across the UK including breakfast seminars, dinners and national webinars on a number of topics relevant to this market.

The Charters’ key aims are to help stimulate demand and boost access to finance for SMEs and mid-market companies, encourage enterprise and provide guidance to help businesses grow successfully.Lloyds Bank has been particularly focused in supporting the angel community in recent years. It is the only bank to be represented on the board of the UKBAA. As part of our education programme we have run workshops in Oxford, Liverpool, London & Surrey about equity finance and how it can work, and have introduced bankers to a number of private investors. We have also joined forces with the City of London Corporation and the London Business Angels to support the Angels in the City initiative.
