Are you using the safetool for the job?

There is a marked increase in transient over-voltages on theelectrical network. Apparently our increased demands forpower and the effects of climate change have combined tomake you less safe! To help to keep you safe, the IEC developed a series of safetycategories which relate to the design of your testers and thelocations in which you work. In short, if you are working inside down stream of theconsumer unit your testers should be rated at Category IIIwhile if you are working closer to the source of supply theyshould be rated Category IV. All testers in this catalogue have been designed, built andactually tested to offer a minimum of Category III safety, with a number built to the requirements of Category IV such asthe MIT400 listed on page 13 and the loop testers listed onpage 15.Megger is one of the very few manufacturers that tests thatthe machines they build can actually withstand the transientsrequired by the standard. Why? Because your safety is worth it!

Calibrate, check with atest box or use astandard resistor?The purpose of periodic calibration is not to take more moneyoff you, but to make sure that your tester is testing installationsin the way prescribed by the Wiring Regulations. Usinginsulation testing as an example, if the tester does not outputthe correct test voltage, the circuit is either over-stressed andpossibly damaged or under-stressed and problems are notrevealed that should be.

Some people think that testing against a standard resistor isadequate. But how do they check the output of the tester?They don’t. In fact it doesn’t occur to them that they need to inorder to test to the 17th Edition. Resistance measurements areratiometric, based on R=V/I, and therefore whatever thevoltage it will give a resistance reading.

It is possible for an electrician to build a kit to check his testersaccurately but it is rather more complicated than a simpleresistor or two and would take some time to design and build,time that would be better spent earning money.

There are only two safe alternatives - to have the testerscalibrated or to use one of the very few test boxes availablethat checks the testers’ outputs as well as readings, like theMTB7671 on page 23.

The days of walking back andforth to a fuse board whenRCD testing are over.

MFT1552 and MFT1553 willdo the five tests (1⁄2I, I and 5Iplus 0° and 180°)automatically. Onceconnected to a convenientsocket and set to the correcttrip setting, allowing fornormal, selective, or d.c.sensitive RCDs, pressing thetest button starts the testsequence. You stand by theRCD to re-set it when it tripson the I and 5I tests.

The results are retrieved bypressing the test button.Repeated pressing of thebutton will display each testresult in turn.

In a scene reminiscent of a James Bondmovie, an aluminium flight case recentlycame flying from the window of a speedingvan on the M69 motorway. The casecontained the latest in electrical testingtechnology, in the form of a Megger MTK320electrical contractors’ test kit that had beenstolen from a vehicle belonging to a leadingelectrical training provider.

Despite a rough landing at speeds close to 70 mph, the three testers that make up thekit were survived their ordeal completelyunscathed. A thorough check in the Meggercalibration laboratory showed that none ofthe instruments needed even the slightest ofadjustments.

PPK210Comprises the MIT310 insulation and continuity tester whichtests at 250 V, 500 V and 1000 V, and the LRCD210 Loop andRCD tester. The kit comes complete with test leads, carry andstorage case and free calibration certificates.

The MIT310 insulation tester and LRCD210 loop and RCD testerwill take the bashing that testers receive when they are on site.They are rubber armoured, and have an integral solid lid tocover the display.

Choose the PPK210 Part P kit to certify an installation to Part Pof the Building Regulations. The included MIT310 insulationtester provides all required insulation test voltages, enablingtesting of SELV and PELV circuits at 250 V d.c. and standardinstallation wiring at 500 V d.c.

Use the ‘ramp test’ to identifynuisance tripping RCDs.

An overly current sensitive orfaulty RCD can cause nuisancetripping of the RCD, which canbe very difficult to locate. Acurrent clamp meter is not fastenough. By testing with aramp test, the test current isslowly increased until the RCDtrips. The tester displays thetrip current in milliamps (notthe trip time). If this is toolow, replace the RCD.

Portable Appliance TestersPAT300 seriesTwo all-new PAT testers which offer the operator the choicebetween manual or automatic operation without thecomplexity of data storage. The PAT300 series allows the user toselect a range of tests, such as those for a class I asset, simply bypressing the “class I“ button, and then initiate the test bypressing the test button. The results are displayed in a fewseconds, the test piece changed and test button pressed againastonishingly quickly. However, if a particular test needs to berepeated, there are direct access buttons dedicated to specifictests. The instant-restart feature speeds testing when movingfrom one room to another, re-starting in exactly the same menulocation where it was left.

PAT320 is the PAT tester for those electricians who occasionallydo testing and don’t want the complexity of databasemanagement and are happy to make out certificates by hand.

PAT350 is similar to the PAT320 but with the added benefit offlash testing. Because of its high through-put capabilities andthe speed at which it gives results, it is ideal for applicationssuch as tool hire companies and service centres.

Of particular interest to hire-tool testing is the PAT350’s abilityto bond test virtually continuously.

RELIABILITY

Tough as old boots the SCT stays on the job when others can’t.

The weakest link is the connection between the cable or fibreand the tester. By introducing the unique “connector-lessadaptor system” Megger has eliminated downtime due toconnector damage.

The adaptor fits into the body of the tester and can be thrownaround it is so tough. The adaptor is virtually unbreakable.

The operator can simply replace the contacts too. This reducesdowntime from days to seconds.

Unlike other structured cable certifiers on the market the SCT isimmune to common electrical hazards. This means the SCT stayson the job longer giving a better return on your out-lay.

EASY TO USE

Menus provide just the right amount of information.

The “HOME” based menu system is familiar and the controlssimple. All controls are identified using common terminologywith consistent menu-to–menu operation.

All work is organized in projects. Projects contain allinformation for certification, test parameters, testing, resultsmanagement and any options. This virtually eliminates setuperrors when switching jobs, reducing the amount of re-testingrequired.

The key role of the SCT is LAN certifying, so the system focuseson that reducing testing to a 2-button process “TEST”, and“ENTER” from a single menu.

There is no need to navigate through multiple menus to certifya link as test parameters, testing, results display and saving ofgraphical or numerical results is done from a single menuscreen.

CAPABILITY

1000 MHz certification capability future-proofed the SCT. Itexceeds CAT6 and 6a requirements and pre-empts to theproposed CAT7 standard.

Level IV accuracy, ensuring that you won’t be caught out as therequirements change.

True vector measurement system allows you to measure theperformance of the components of your system.

Results displayed in summary. A pass test displays the fact andoffers save options, results only or results and graphical format.For failed tests the pair number, value and fail margin aredisplayed.

FRAX101 Sweep frequencyresponse analyser

■ Following an incident the quickest way to assess the condition of a transformer, beforereturning it to service, is to run a FRA test. The FRAX101 is the smallest, most ruggedinstrument and it offers the highest dynamic range and accuracy.

■ Measures turns ratio, excitation current and polarity of windings in single- and three-phasedistribution and power transformers (tested phase by phase), potential and currenttransformers, and tapped transformers. User can operate the test set one handed. Eliminatesthe need to bend down to operate the instrument and speeds up testing time. It is rugged,with a high impact, shock resistant case, yet very light at 870 g.

■ Hand held, compact cable fault locator for locating faults on metallic cables. Minimumresolution of 0.1 m and a 3 km maximum range depending on velocity factor selected andcable type. 20 km version also available. Four output impedance are available (25 �, 50 �,75 � and 100 �), and a velocity factor between 0.30 and 0.99 will meet any cable testrequirements.

■ On-site power quality analysis and data retrieval without a computer. Intelligent downloadand real time graphical trending of Harmonics, THD and TDD. It now has a faster digital signalprocessor (DSP), 12 MB of internal, non-volatile memory, and incorporated auxiliary powerinput capabilities. Includes Metrosoft® software and remote communications.

■ Tests for earths and bonding in telecommunications towers, rail, aircraft, anything bimetal,switchgear (including lv switchgear), breakers, etc. Automatically detects continuity inpotential and current connections. Gives accurate results in under three seconds, with autocurrent reversal. Fuse protected to 600 V. NiMH battery reduces weight. Fully automatic. Selectthe most suitable test current, up to 10 A dc to measure resistance from 0.1 μ� to 2000 � onone of seven ranges.

■ Batteries are becoming an increasingly important part of modern life with their use in standbypower and maintained supply units. Megger has added to its BITE range of battery impedancetesters with the Programma Torkel range of battery load units which allow the batteries to betested in service, by adjusting to include the load current in the test parameters.

■ Tests insulation resistance up to 5 T�. MIT510/2 is easy to operate and very tough. It canperform automatic IR tests. The built-in timer and high test ranges allow simple and quickevaluation of the condition of the insulation under test. Now upgraded to CATIV 600 V, givingyou even better operator safety.

■ MPRT tester and AVTS® software from Megger raises the standard for the automatic testingand management of protective relay systems. MPRT offers traditional manual and semiautomatic testing of the relay system whilst the AVTS package offers fully automatic testing aswell as relay maintenance schedule management.
