For the last two centuries Northeast England has been a globally significant world-scale industrial base. Its foundations are built on a wealth of innovation, success and experience in heavy industry including the chemistry using industries of chemicals, fine & speciality chemicals, petrochemicals, polymers and composites, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Many of the world’s leading companies are located in the region and many ground breaking products have been developed and manufactured here - penicillin; paracetamol; polyethylene; polyester and perspex are just a few examples.

The region is home to over 50% of the UK petrochemical industry and boasts the largest integrated chemical complex in the UK in terms of manufacturing capacity and the second largest in Western Europe, key feedstocks includes Ammonia, Ethylene, and other hydrocarbon derivatives. The region is also home to a large and established Pharmaceutical sector producing 35% of all UK’s Pharmaceutical manufacturing; and all aspects of the Pharmaceutical life-cycle are represented in the region.

Northeast England actively supports innovative science and engineering based business and has become the leading UK location for the industrialisation of low carbon and sustainable processing. New sectors such as biofuels, renewable energy and low carbon materials, high tech waste recycling, printable electronics and bioresources, including biomass and waste to fuels, electricity, heat & chemicals, are developing alongside our traditional sectors and benefit from the transition of skills and expertise of these established sectors.

Today there are more than 1,400 companies in these sectors directly involved or in the supply chain of these industries within Northeast England generating £26m of annual sales. Together they employ 190,000 people and the sector exports £12bn each year.

Over recent years the Northeast of England has become a favoured location for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Investments have originated from the rest of Europe, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, S Korea, Thailand, USA together with India amongst others. Indian companies recently investing in the region include Tata, Piramal, Shasun and ipca labs.

The region provides a cost effective route to 400 million European customers and the nature of the inter-related network of companies operating in these sectors in Northeast England holds many significant advantages for businesses choosing to locate here. The ambition of the region is to build on this powerful industrial base to make the Northeast one of the most competitive and successful region in Europe for these industries.

Northeast of England Process Industry

NEPIC, the North East of England Process Industry Cluster, represents over 500 chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, Energy and Renewables businesses and their support companies across the North East of England. These companies generate in excess of £10bn of sales and are 30% of this region’s industrial base, employing about 35,000 people directly and impacting on a further 200,000 supply chain jobs. The Cluster organisation coordinates approximately £5m of activity each year for the industry and has brought over £1bn in Gross Value Added value to the UK economy through its work and assistance.

NEPIC’s focus is on growth of the sector and this is under-pinned by strategic work in the areas of innovation, attraction of investment projects, increasing exports, development of inter-company sales between its members, expanding the business of small and medium sized enterprises, increasing the skills base in its region, stakeholder engagement and promoting internationally the capabilities of its members, the process industry and infrastructure in the North East of England. NEPIC CEO: Dr Stan Higgins BA PhD CSci CChem FRSC & Associate Fellow of IChemEStan has 40 years experience in the Chemical Process Industries. He studied Chemistry, Economics and Technology at York University. Ideas he suggested as an undergraduate in mechanistic organic chemistry resulted in the University awarding him a PhD in record time. After periods in Medicinal Chemistry, Process Development, Technical Support and Manufacturing of Pharmaceuticals, he gained multi plant management experience in commodity specialty chemicals with AKZO.

He then became Technical and Managing Director of Fine Chemical Company Peboc, which during his tenure won several industrial awards including 2 Queens Awards to Industry for Technology and Export achievement. After divesting PEBOC from SOLVAY to Eastman Fine Chemicals, he moved to Tennessee, USA as their Fine Chemical Manufacturing Director. Returning to the UK, Stan became Technical Director of Laporte Fine Chemicals and following the sale of Laporte to Degussa, Stan worked for James Robinson, helping to establish new facilities in India and overseeing technical matters in their EU businesses. In 2003 he established NEPIC, leading it to become a globally recognised industrial cluster. In 2010 he was nominated by his peers for an award as EU Cluster Manager of the Year.

NEPIC Senior Project Manager: John Brady Born and bred in the Northeast of England, John has always been very passionate about the region and developing its growth potential.He has over 25 years experience in the Chemical Process Industry. He is a graduate Chemist who has held senior and strategic business management roles, for ICI, Terra Nitrogen and NEPIC. As a research scientist for ICI, he was involved in polyaromatics R&D for use in the aerospace and automotive industries.

Later he joined the ICI Fertilizer and Industrial Chemical commercial teams. At Terra Nitrogen, he managed the chemicals business unit,

as well as strategic purchasing roles, leading business development activity in NOx abatement.He joined NEPIC in 2008 and managing its Bioresources and Renewable Energy activity bringing leadership and building profile to the region by creating an innovation roadmap leading to business opportunities and collaborative programmes within Europe and the global market. He is currently active in bringing a number of low carbon investment and business growth opportunities into the region.

NEPIC India Country Specialist and Market Visit Leader: Phil HollowoodPhil is leading a market visit to India for the Chemical Process industry on behalf of NEPIC and UK Trade & Investment. Phil has worked within the process industry for over 35 years, in a variety of sectors (Agro, Polymers, Speciality Chemicals, Advanced Materials) with large multi-nationals as well as SME’s. He has over 20 years experience in doing business in India being a former director of James Robinson India Pvt Ltd, a former JV with Yule Catto PLC of the UK. He has lead business delegations to and hosted delegations from India.

A Chemical Engineer by profession, he has had roles in R&D, Operations, Procurement, Business Development and General Management. Since his early youth, Phil has been a keen follower of cricket (two of his cricketing idols being Farokh Engineer and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar); he played in the Yorkshire leagues for many years before coaching junior cricket at his local club.

Ian Swales was elected as the new MP for Redcar, an industrial constituency in the Northeast of England, in May 2010. He was born in Leeds and grew up in Harrogate and following a Chemical Engineering degree at Manchester University he joined Yorkshire Electricity and qualified as an Accountant in 1977. He moved to Teesside in 1978 to join ICI and settled in Redcar.

At ICI Ian held a wide variety of financial and business management roles and his work took him all over the world. At one time he had staff spread across Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. He worked at ICI’s European HQ in Brussels for 3 years in the 1980s and took part in

major chemical industry re-structuring. In 1996 he moved to become global Head of Leadership Development for ICI before leaving in 1999 to start his own training and consultancy business. His clients have ranged from venture capital companies and start-ups to large public and private organisations. He found it especially revealing to work with two Government Departments in London and see how they interact with politicians. Ian has a passionate interest in people and how they live and work together in his spare time Ian helps local organisations and campaigns on local issues.

As an MP his work in the House of Commons includes an influential role on the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee and he has recently taken over as Chair of the all parliamentary group for the Chemical Industry. Ian is part of the current governing coalition. The current Prime Minister Mr Cameron has stated that “the Chemicals Industry is the foundation of the UK’s manufacturing Industry.”

Neil Moon BiographyA graduate in Chemical Engineering, from Imperial College London, Neil started work as a process engineer for Procter & Gamble. He joined ICI in 1988, working in a number of commercial and supply chain planning roles until 1999 when he moved to Huntsman, as part of their acquisition of ICI Petrochemical business. Within Huntsman, Neil worked in the corporate purchasing organisation on feedstock trading and acquisition for bulk oil and gas, subsequently taking on the management of Huntsman’s bulk shipping procurement and management as well. Subsequently Neil joined SABIC Europe working in Strategic Planning, Energy Purchasing & Carbon Trading, and latterly logistic asset strategy.

In 2009 Neil joined Agility Logistics Solutions, initially to lead the Solutions consultancy but more latterly to direct Global Strategic Projects within the Chemicals Speciality.

Riccardo Tonelli BiographyA graduate in Foreign Languages and Business, Riccardo started work as a buyer for GE in the oil & gas sector in Italy. He joined General Motors/EDS in 2004, working in a number of commercial and quality control oriented roles around Europe until 2007 when he moved to Huntsman. At Huntsman, Riccardo was responsible for the operational management of the Supply Networks for the business as well as the design and improvement of packaging solutions for the Pigments Division. In 2011 Riccardo Joined Agility as Global Strategic Projects Manager, to develop and delivery leading edge Strategic Project initiatives.

On 31 December 2011, the current management team led a buyout of The Dow Chemical Company’s Custom Processing facilities at Middlesbrough and Billingham (previously Dow Haltermann Custom Processing UK) and reverted to the previous, well respected, identity of Chemoxy.

Jonathan AtkinsonJonathan has a degree in chemistry and a doctorate in synthetic chemistry from Oxford University. Jonathan’s doctoral thesis was sponsored by Glaxo Group Research. His research was concerned with the stereoselective synthesis of a number of alkaloid derivatives, including derivatives of morphine, having therapeutic applications. Jonathan has worked both in private practice, and in-house, in the patent department of a multinational pharmaceutical company prior to joining HGF. His practice draws on this experience and extends to a wide range of chemical and mechanical subject matter. Jonathan’s practice in the pharmaceutical area has covered the protection of new chemical entities, novel formulations and polymorphic forms, new

medical uses for therapeutics, and process and development issues. He has a number of years’ experience in filing supplementary protection certificates for marketed pharmaceutical drugs. Andrew HomeAndrew is the second generation owner/manager of a UK based project and engineering services business. He gained a doctorate in petroleum geochemistry from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and worked in the oil & gas exploration industry before joining the family business. Andrew was born in Calcutta, lives in UK and travels extensively in relation to his work.

Brian DakersAs NECC’s International Trade Manager, Brian is responsible for the development and delivery of products utilized by international businesses with operations in the North East of England. Brian is also a UK Government appointed inspector of certification standards in the United Kingdom, one of eight people responsible for the maintenance and development of standards in the provision of certification services.

Mike GreenProfessor Mike Green took over as Head of Chemistry at the University of Newcastle three years ago. Since then the School has increased in both size and quality and has improved its reputation both for research and undergraduate teaching. Funding initiatives have resulted in state of the art teaching laboratories and teaching facilities.

Before moving to Newcastle, Mike spent 31 years in Industry working for BP, Akzo Nobel, and more recently Sasol in South Africa. His experience in managing research groups and ensuring high quality

engagement and staff management have proved invaluable in his current position.

Paul Shelton Dr. Paul Shelton holds a Ph.D in Metallurgy and enjoyed previous employment as a Materials Engineer for the former ICI. He later worked as the Aerospace Product Manager in a lost wax investment casting foundry, manufacturing superalloy gas turbine components, and later as Works Manager of a stainless steel fabricators. He is currently Assistant Dean in the School of Science and Engineering at Teesside University.

Simon HodgsonProfessor Simon Hodgson is President Elect of the Engineering Professors Council (www.epc.ac.uk) and Dean of the School of Science and Engineering at Teesside University in the UK. A Materials Engineer by background, his research specialisms are in high performance coatings and functional materials including sol-gel processing, inorganic foams, nanocomposite, mesoporous and catalytic materials on which he has published almost 100 patents, publications and government reports. His current and recent work involves research for leading international clientssuch as Rolls-Royce plc and LG-Philips and he is also director of a spin out company

based on his high temperature coatings work. Professor Hodgson has pioneered a number of developments in engineering training and education, including new approaches for of collaborative working between industry and academia in the bespoke design, development and delivery of education and training programmes to meet employer skills needs.

Tom PorterAfter gaining my doctorate in Organic Chemistry from the University of Salford in 1995, I worked for contract research and manufacturing organisations serving the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical sectors for fourteen years, prior to joining Thomas Swan providing a depth of experience, insight and specialist expertise which has, I believe, often proved to be invaluable to our customers. I joined Thomas Swan in 2009, managing the technical functions across all of our three business Divisions - before being appointed as Commercial Director for Custom Manufacture. This is a highly bespoke service and my role involves building strong and lasting relationships - so we,

and the companies we supply, can respond to evolving market requirements. I work closely with all of our customers, whatever their size or requirements, and whether it’s a one-off job or a regular production requirement. This enables us to ensure that their projects are delivered with the highest standards of service, confidentiality and expertise. My goal is to tailor the flexibility and manufacturing capability of the Division to meet changing customer requirements and to supply every project on budget and on time.
