Dear Parish Family & Friends,

FROM THE PASTOR

Next weekend is Labor Day weekend—the unofficial ending of Summer fun at the beach, the lake, and the pool. I hope you all have a great time relaxing—even if it’s a stay-cation! After the Monday, September 4th, 9 am Mass, I’ll be off to Henry County to be with my dad, sister and brother-in-law for lunch at a local festival. Who knows— I might pick up some ideas for our festival later in the month!

Next weekend we also have Father Expedito here to give the Archdiocesan Mission Appeal—the second of two we have each year. Thank you for your generosity to Father Expedito.

I hope this Bible verse brings you comfort next weekend. “Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up. So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all, but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith.” - Galatians 6:9-10

Peace and all good, Fr. Steve Giannini

Looking to the Future — Visioning Meetings for Johnson County Public Library’s

10-year Building Analysis Plan

The Johnson County Public Library is engaging the communi-ty, staff and county leadership for their building analysis plan. When completed, the plan will help strategize facility needs for the library system over the next 10 years. They’ve hosted six visioning sessions so far, and input from a broad cross-section of stakeholders will be a key component of developing the plan. It is very important that this assess-ment reflects community interests, needs and priorities.

They are in the information-gathering phase of the plan and would love for you to attend one of these visioning sessions. Everyone brings a different set of experiences and perspec-tives on education and what values are important to the Johnson County community. With this information, the John-son County Public Library will better understand what people want from their community library system.

We hope you can join them for a session!

COME MEET FR. EXPEDITO MUWONGE NEXT WEEKEND

Bro. Peduru took this picture of the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi at sunset in Assisi, Umbria, Italy, 2014 .

Fr. Expedito Muwonge will join us for next weekend’s Masses. He will be at the Saturday, September 2, 5:30 Mass and the Sunday, September 3, 8:45 am & 11:30 am Masses. Fr. Expedito will be officiating the Masses and helping us know more about the Byumba Diocese in Rwanda.

The Byumba diocese went through a horrendous civil war from 1990 to 1994 that ended up in genocide against the Tutsi in 1994. Many lives were lost: uncountable laity, a bishop and 16 priests. A lot of Church infrastructures and property were destroyed. The Church of Byumba is still grappling with the post genocidal impacts: trauma, fear, mistrust, hatred, and all forms of ill feelings. The people were exposed to horrible experiences of war and many have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

The Diocese of Byumba has an enormous task of contributing to the rebuilding of peace and reconciliation among people they serve. They have need of a multipurpose apartment building at Don Bosco de Rushaki School to hold seminars and training for non-school-going youths during vacation times. Among these youths, there are have married couples, widows, and ex-prisoners returning into society. The diocese is doing a lot of reconciliation seminars among Christians. By the grace of God, results are promising.

They plan to achieve their continuous goal of rehabilitation through trainings, seminars, and workshops on Christian family life, reconciliation, peace, lessons in personal responsibility, and community leadership on the local level. That entire plan is possible in Byumba Catholic Diocese, one of the nine dioceses in Rwanda with 19 parishes. Created in 1981, the diocese covers an area of 3,200 sq. miles and has a population of 1,483,699. Within this number, Catholics are 716,011 (51%) of the total population. There are 123 active priests, 164 women and men religious, and 440 catechists, as of 2015 statistics. The Byumba Diocese is asking for your help to realize their goal of an apartment building at Don Bosco de Rushaki High School. With your help, you will be contributing to the healing process of their people. Thank you for your support.

Electronic giving doesn’t take vacations This fall, if you can’t make it to church due to travel or other

commitments, we encourage you to automate your regular donations. Saints Francis & Clare of Assisi relies on the consistent financial support of the congregation and electronic giving offers an easy way to give on a recurring basis. Simply visit www.ss-fc.org and locate the donation link on the Home Page. We thank you for your continued support!

Please plan on joining us for our upcoming season’s rehearsals on Thursdays at 7:00 pm in church. If you need further information, please contact Bill Hill at (317) 859-4673 x114, or by email at [email protected].

Did you know that SS. Francis and Clare of Assisi has a caregiving support group that meets once a month? It is a wonderful 1 ½ hour get-away for those giving care to others (spouses, children, parents, grandparents, grandchildren, friends, etc.). All conversations are confidential. Coffee and breakfast treats make the meeting more enjoyable. Our next meeting is Saturday, September 9 at 9:00 am. We would love to have you join us.

SSFC YOUTH MINISTRY

Thank you, youthful Liturgical Ministers!

Each week during every one of our weekend Liturgies, we have youth serving our parish family.

They are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Altar Servers, Master of Ceremonies, Lectors, Ushers, musicians and cantors. We have approximately 87 youth (middle school and high school) involved in these ministries, serving our Lord and our parish family.

It takes a parish…

to bring teens to know Christ and empower them to become intentional disciples!

First on our list was to establish a Prayer Warrior base! God has provided three very strong prayer warriors to cover us in prayer!! We truly appreciate their offering of love and service! Thank you, God, it does take a parish!

Second on our list is to introduce the parish to their new Youth Council! This council has written a mission statement (check it out on the Youth Room Window) and begun work on bringing youth to our parish and our parish to youth! Council members include: Jeremy Keusch, Nick Sauer, Maddie Carr, Riley Ripberger, Anthony Kovacs, Dillon Gardner, Sophie Louthain and Briggs McGill. Check out their pictures on our Youth Room Window.

COME JOIN US...Youth Ensemble

This year’s Youth Ensemble is being formed! We will sing and play

one Saturday/Sunday Mass per month. Our two new leaders, Michael

Shirley and Adam Nover, are looking for more SINGERS and

INSTRAMENTALISTS!

We have many teens gifted with musical talent in our parish and we would LOVE for YOU to join us!

Hurry and contact Monica, [email protected], today!

Bring glory to God and draw others to Christ through music

Youth Ministry!

If you love to shop, we could use your help! We are looking for purse donations for our 3rd Annual Purse Bingo, which will be held on Thursday, October 5th. We are asking for new designer purses (i.e. Coach, DKNY, Tignanello, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, etc.) with a retail value of at least $150 to be used as bingo prizes. We are also seeking donations of wristlets and wallets. Shop with friends and make a group donation. Donations are requested by September 20th. Please contact Amy Keusch, (317)535-1022, or Anne Wolf, (317) 696-7013 with questions or to make arrangements for purse pick-up. Thank you!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Sacramental Preparation for Children and Youth beyond Second Grade Do you have a child beyond second grade who seeks to prepare for the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and/or Eucharist, and Confirmation? We can help you determine how to move forward with this important part of your child’s faith life.

Our SSFC Bridges Class is one way we prepare children in grades three – eight to learn and prepare for these Sac-raments. Classes will begin soon and will meet at 10:00 am on Sundays. Bridges allows us to share basic infor-mation about our Catholic faith that children may not fully understand if they’ve had limited faith formation. We can sometimes provide other paths to this preparation for children who are in third grade or beyond eighth grade. Every situation is unique! Contact Patricia, [email protected], in the parish office if you have children in grades 3-5 or Monica Robinson [email protected] for those in middle and high school.

We are happy to work with you to determine the best path for your child to grow in their Sacramental life.

YOU MAY STILL REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR RE/YM!!!!

If you have not yet registered for RE/YM, you may still sign up for our

programs. Visit tinyurl.ssfc-reym17 to register your family for faith formation, including preschool, elementary, middle and high school youth. Sacramental preparation for non-school ministry First Reconciliation/

Eucharist and Confirmation is also reserved via this page.

Non-member families and children are welcome to participate in our programs. There will be a $50 registration fee for non-parishioners who wish to enroll their children in SSFC RE/YM for the upcoming year. All are welcome, and we encourage those who appreciate our faith formation programs to join our

vibrant parish. Contact Patricia McGill (preschool – grade 5) and Monica Robinson (grades 6-12) if you have questions concerning RE/YM. Contact the parish office if you have questions regarding your family’s

membership status.
