The Union is a democratic organisation, run by Student Officers, who are elected by UEA students each year. These 18 Officers (5 who are employed full-time and 13 part-time volunteers) represent your views to the University, to the local community and nationally to enrich your life as a student. As well as working to fulfil their manifesto pledges and responding to student feedback, Officers make the changes that Union Council vote for. They are also here to consider your ideas and lobby on issues you raise, so get in touch with your suggestions.

Hi! I’m Yinbo and I’m the Activities and Opportunities Officer. I will put my effort

to increasing the number of students engaged in clubs and societies, ensuring

our members’ voices are heard, and making sure all clubs and societies get

the support they need from us. I do hope all of you participate in and enjoy extra

and co-curricular activities whilst at UEA.

Hey! This year, I’m concerned with ensuring that students have a number of different ways to feed in to our decision making, to ensure that we are in touch with the issues that affect all our members. From this, we should be running big, creative and hard hitting campaigns that are successful and bring about real change!

I’m Holly and I’m here to help you with all things welfare. At the heart of what I want to do this year is to bring a bigger

voice to under-represented and minority groups, build our relationship with

the local community and campaign to remove the stigma around mental health.

By night, I’m an inspiring interpretive dancer.

Hi I’m Connor and I’m the Undergraduate Education Officer for the next year! I’m especially keen to look at student representation, engagement and partnership, to ensure student voices are heard in our education systems and to address some of the structural inequalities in our systems, whether that’s through looking at hidden course costs or ensuring more readings are available on Blackboard.

Hi! As the union’s first ever full-time officer for Postgraduates, I will make it

my priority to revolutionise Postgraduate representation to make sure our voices

are finally heard. Postgraduates feel squeezed: rising fees, funding freezes,

and rising living costs as austerity bites. I’ll be campaigning against the assault

upon our education, and lobby for a better deal for Postgraduates.

Everything the Union does is in the interests of democracy and the voice of the student body as a whole. Student Officers are guided by the policies that students make

through referendums and through a representative body called Union Council (which is the heartbeat of the Union). This is an opportunity for representatives of students from

across the University community to come together and decide where we go next.

20

If you want to make a positive difference to the lives of UEA students then you will be a perfect candidate. All Union members can elect officers or run for election themselves. You can nominate yourself early in the new year, and voting takes place in the spring semester. Running for election is not as scary as it sounds, it’s actually pretty fun. Visit ueastudent.com to find out more about how to vote, running for election and to meet your candidates. Alternatively contact Chris, the Campaigns & Democracy Officer, with any questions on [email protected]

21

Our members (that’s you) make decisions democratically on how the Union works. We also have a Trustee Board, which is mostly made up of students, who basically make sure that the decisions we make aren’t breaking the law or making us bankrupt - so they have final say.

If you have an idea to change the Union, UEA or the world then we are here to support you.

Talk to your officers or consider standing as a Union Councillor if you want to shape the way the Union works.Raise your issues and ideas with student officers; they are here to help you.

Any member of the Union can attend Union Council. It is usually held at 7pm on a Thursday evening in one of the main lecture theatres. You can also watch Union Council live online.

Page 23: UEA|SU Handbook

23

If you’re interested in shaping the way your course works, being a Student Rep is for you. This position is elected at School level and there is one for every year of study. All Student Reps sit on committees to make sure the voice of students is heard.

If you aren’t a Student Rep yourself, make sure you find out who your Reps are and let them know what you think about your course by going to www.ueastudent.com/whoismyrep. Your feedback will enable your Reps bring about the changes you want to see at UEA.

Alongside Student Reps, there are Faculty Convenors who work at faculty level and Rep Organisers who work on the running of the rep scheme.

If you want to get more involved with your Students’ Union why not set its direction by becoming a Union Councillor? Meetings take place throughout the year where Union Council sets out what should be worked on by the SU. Council is made up of councillors from clubs, societies and schools of study so there are plenty of ways to play your part.

The best part of all of these roles is that they’re up for grabs every year- loads of positions are available now so if you want to be the change maker, head to www.ueastudent.com to find out more and get involved.

24

The core purpose of the Union is to enrich your life as a UEA student. The most important way we do this is by running campaigns, and we need your help!

This year we want to make all of our campaigns the biggest, the best and the most successful we’ve ever had.

You are welcome to join each and every campaign the Union supports, so contact Chris on [email protected] if you want to get involved or look online to www.ueastudent.com/ourcampaigns to find out more.

campaigns

Page 25: UEA|SU Handbook

25

Each year the SU selects some big topics to be our “priority campaigns” for the year ahead. These campaigns become the focus for the officer team whilst still allowing for new projects and campaigns to be developed throughout the year as they come up.

This year we’re focusing our efforts on: the introducing of a postgraduate and international fee cap, the living wage and your employment right, the cost of student life and stopping the cuts to the disabled students’ allowance. If you want to find out more about what we’re doing, how you can get involved and how you can suggest new campaigns head online to www.ueastudent.com/ourcampaigns

The live music at UEA is world famous and anyone who’s anyone has played here. But the commercial side

has developed far beyond just gigs. The Union runs independent businesses across campus that make money

to invest back into the Union and provide opportunities for its’ members (you!).

We run Social Enterprises for two reasons; firstly, so that you can have a say in how we run them so they are responsive to your needs. Secondly, to make the money we need to deliver the activities we provide.

As a charity, we put all of the profit we make in our Social Enterprises back into the Union. So when you buy a sandwich at the Union shop, a Fair Trade cappuccino from UNIO, or a ticket to a Tuesday club night, you are donating to a charity that wants to help you.

The LCR and Waterfront venues are famous for their gigs. In recent years we’ve seen Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Foals and more. It’s not just music events though; we also have great comedy nights, for example with Greg Davies and Russell Kane performing last year. Go to www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk for the full list of current events or visit our very own Box Office on Campus. In line with the University’s pioneering green agenda, your Union has been working hard to act on ethical and environmental issues across campus.

Student led initiatives have included Reduce Reuse Recycle, a Vegbox scheme, Go Green Week, the UEA Food Co-op and a campaign on ethical procurement and investment. The Union has switched to the Co-op for ethical banking, has won the NUSSL Green Impact Gold Award two years in a row, and has run a large campaign to lobby the university to agree to affiliate with the Worker Rights Consortium which monitors university supply chains.

This is the easiest and best value option to get everything you’ll need for Welcome Week. You’ll get a wristband, which will get you into all the nighttime events like the Social Network Party, Zane Lowe, and the Fresher’s Ball. You also get an NUS Extra card to save you tons of cash all year long. Added to this a UEA branded hoodie so you can keep warm and look great around campus, and you’re all set. See the bundle and buy at www.ueastudent.com (you’ll need to be registered and signed into the site to see the secret link to buy tickets).

One thing you’ll definitely want to get is an NUS Extra Card. This gives you great discounts for loads of great brands like Amazon, Odeon, Apple, Spotify, ASOS, and even The Co-Operative (which means 10% off in the Union shop). Combine this with loads of great restaurants, train tickets (including money off Young Persons Rail Cards) and it will have paid for itself within a matter of days, then you can continue to enjoy the discounts for the rest of the year.

You can buy one from reception when you get here, get one online here or if you want to save even more money, buy it as part of a bundle with your Welcome Week wristband and hoodie.
