UCSF Department of Emergency Medicine Newsletter August 2016 - Issue #60 ACHIEVEMENTS Dr. Jeffrey Tabas, Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, was appointed to the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) CME Task Force which selects the ABEM LLSA articles. His role will be to review and grade the recommended articles. Dr. Tabas was also appointed DEM director of faculty development. His role will be to encourage and support development and success of junior, mid-level, and senior faculty through mentoring and recognition. FACULTY ANNOUNCEMENTS Dr. Mary Mercer gave a national lecture (online) for all the EMS fellowships on a platform called "EMS Medicine Live" that allows us to have lectures/shared best practices across all of the different fellowships. Her lecture was titled "Medical Direction for Mass Gatherings." Dr. Starr Knight, Assistant Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine, was the liaison between the Department of Emergency Medicine and the UCSF-SFGH Family and Community Residency Program supporting a summer mentorship program for high school students in the Mission District in partnership with John O'Connell High School, FACES for the Future, and various other community partners. With a focus on healthcare careers exposure, several of our faculty and residents had the wonderful opportunity to mentor high school students from under-represented backgrounds with an interest in the medical field. Dr. Knight was an invited lecturer for the student's lecture series on July 26, 2016 and also guided the students on a tour and orientation to the ZSFG ED. Faculty involved in clinical shadowing experiences included Drs. Lauren Chalwell, Chris Colwell, Kayla Enriquez, Renee Hsia, Eric Isaacs, Alan Gelb, Heather Mahoney, David Malmud,

ACHIEVEMENTS

Dr. Jeffrey Tabas, Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, was

Alvarez, Rosny Daniel, and Remy Bizimungu.

INVITED PRESENTATIONS

Dr. Aaron Harries, Assistant Clinical Professor ofEmergency Medicine, was an invited speaker at the 7th WorldCongress of Mountain & Wilderness Medicine in Telluride,Colorado. He gave a lecture entitled "Traumatic Brain Injury:Where there is no neurosurgeon" on August 4, 2016 and wasa co-instructor for a workshop entitled "Wilderness MedicineImprovisation" on August 2, 2016. He is pictured here teachinga small group during the workshop.

Dr. Robert Rodriguez, Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, presented grand roundson August 9 at UC San Diego--Selective Chest Imaging in Blunt Trauma.

MEDIA COVERAGE

Dr. Mary Mercer, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, was interviewed for a story

that appeared on Healthline on "How to Render First Aid during a Mass Shooting."

Dr. Renee Hsia, Professor of Emergency Medicine, received media attention from The New

York Times, The Guardian and Science Daily for her article published in PLoS One (see

below) about racial-ethnic disparities in opioid prescriptions .

NEW FELLOWS

Bryan Cooper, MD, joined the department as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellow on July

1. Dr. Cooper completed medical school from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of

Medicine and residency in Pediatrics from UCSF. He will be working clinically at UCSF Benioff

Children's Hospital Oakland and Mission Bay. In his spare time he enjoys backpacking,

outdoor activities and has an interest in film/film history.

Kevin Davey, MD, joined the department as our Global Health Fellow on July 1. Dr. Davey

completed his Emergency Medicine residency program at St Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital

Center in New York and he received his MD from OHSU. He will be working with the World

Health Organization and also clinically at ZSFG.

Kavita Gandhi, MD, PhD, joined the department as Ultrasound Fellow on August 1. Dr.

Gandhi completed her Emergency Medicine residency program at OHSU and she received

her MD and PhD in Molecular Epidemiology from the University of Maryland. She will be

working clinically at Parnassus and ZSFG.

Melody Glenn, MD, joined the department as our ACGME EMS & Disaster Medicine Fellow

on July 1. Dr. Glenn completed her Emergency Medicine residency program at Maricopa

Medical Center and she received her MD from USC. She will be working clinically at ZSFG

and the VA. She will also be working with San Francisco EMS, SFDPH, SFFD, and Alameda

County EMS.

Kai Li, MD, joined the department as our ACGME Toxicology Fellow on July 1. Dr. Li

graduated from our own UCSF-SFGH Emergency Medicine residency program and she

received her MD from UC Davis. She will be working clinically at ZSFG and the VA.

Juan Carlos Montoy, MD, PhD, joined the department as our first Clinical Research Fellow

on July 1. Dr. Montoy graduated from our own UCSF-SFGH Emergency Medicine residency

program and he received his MD from Stanford and his PhD in Economics from UC Berkeley.

He will be working clinically at ZSFG.

Dr. Melody GlennDr. Kai Li Dr. Juan Carlos Montoy

Katharine Osborn, MD, joined the department as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellow on

July 1. Dr. Osborn completed her Pediatric residency program at UCSF and received her MD

from the University of Utah. She will be working clinically at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital

Oakland and Mission Bay. She enjoys all things outdoors - running, biking, hiking, camping,

skiing and watercolor painting. She plays soccer and tennis.

Ashkon Shaahinfar, MD, joined the department as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellow

on July 1. Dr. Shaahinfar completed medical school at UCSF and residency in Pediatrics from

Mass General Hospital for Children. He will be working clinically at UCSF Benioff Children's

Hospital Oakland and Mission Bay.His interests include cooking, camping/hiking, indoor rock

climbing and sailing.

Tatyana (Tanya) Vayngortin, MD, joined the department as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Fellow on July 1. Dr. Vayngortin completed medical school at St Louis University School of

Medicine and a residency in Pediatrics from Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. She will be

working clinically at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland and Mission Bay. In her spare

time she enjoys traveling/hiking, dance/yoga and spending time with friends and family.
