FR. ISAAC HECKER QUOTE
“There is an approaching conflict between the
society of the 19th Century and the Church—
which has already begun. It is more threatening
than that of the 16th Century. This requires a
new awakening of the spirit of Christianity,
recurrence to the renewing Spirit, new arms,
new adaptations. […] My whole soul is
alive to this great work. My conviction of
its necessity is complete and irresistible.
My intimate conviction that the voice of
God calls me to labor in this direction is equally
complete and irresistible.” [from private memoranda
made in Europe during his illness, 1874-1875]

A Word from Our Ministry Team
Divine Mercy Sunday, the Canonization of
John XXIII and John Paul II, Matching Gift
Sunday, and 25 years of Priestly Ordination
… these events that we celebrate today are
tied together by the love of our Catholic
Faith. Even though I did not know John
XXIII, I feel he is responsible for enabling the
Church, through the Second Vatican Council, to be a Church that I
became very much excited to be a part of when growing up. It is a
Church that enabled my faith to grow to eventually hear the call of
Jesus inviting me to serve as a priest. Being of Polish background
myself, I certainly felt a connection to John Paul II as well as his
ministry of inspiring the faith of young Catholics though such
gatherings as the World Youth Day celebrations. Building upon the
foundation of John XXIII and the others who came after him, Pope
Francis has been an inspiration to refocusing the Church’s mission
of pastoral ministry and evangelization. These are aspects of the
Church that inspired me to be a Paulist priest. I have been blessed
to serve in our Paulist parishes that have had as their mission
outreach to young adults and those alienated from the Church.
Sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ, welcoming people back to
the Church, and enabling people to be more excited about being
Catholic is what makes me excited about being a priest. In my own
life of faith I have come to appreciate ever more God’s great mercy
and love. In my 25 years of priestly ministry I have been blessed to
minister with many parishioners of all ages who by their sharing of
time, prayers, and resources enable the mission and ministry of our
Paulist parishes to happen. So it is a fitting day to celebrate all of
these events along with our Matching Gift Weekend, as I am
grateful for all of the support that our alumni, friends, and
benefactors provide for our ministry here at the UCC. May God
bless us all as we celebrate the reality of the love and mercy of Jesus
who makes all things well.

Director
