Wherever you are, You
Represent the UAE.
Message From The Cultural Attaché
The Emirates Youth Council (EYC) launched a
new iniave called "Internaonal Emirates
Youth Council Program" to be a vital link be-
tween the Emira students and their country. It
can be an interacve pla#orm for experience
sharing among the youth. The United States of
America was the first stop, as a direct outcome
of efficient cooperaon between EYC and the
UAE Embassy in Washington during the 7th An-
nual UAE Students Forum 2016. Her Excellency Al Mazrui declared:
"EYC launched many iniaves that promoted the role of youth in Emira society in a
way that strengthens their skills and capabilies to become the future leaders who
are able to achieve the vision of the UAE leadership. This would contribute efficiently
in forming the UAE's future, where the youth will be the major pillar to accomplish
significant milestones and UAE's pioneering in various fields".

The Cultural Division Participated in the
International Women’s Day in the UAE Embassy
At the UAE embassy in Washington, in recognion of Interna-
onal Women’s Day , His Excellency, Omar Al Shamsi, Deputy
Chief of Mission extended Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba’s ap-
preciaon and gratude to all female members of the embassy
team, thanking them for their hard work and achievements in
elevang the mission and goals of the United Arab Emirates em-
bassy in Washington.
Dear Students,
At the end of March 2017, I will be leaving the Cultural Division for an-
other opportunity. It has been a pleasure working with you all over the
past four years. I’ve enjoyed learning about the United Arab Emirates,
its people, and culture through interacons with students like yourself
and Ministry of Educaon. The United Arab Emirates is a great country
and I hope to be able to visit one day to see it for myself.
As my students know, I am always encouraging them to do their best
and push themselves beyond their own perceived limits. With the spir-
it of improvement in mind, I’d like to leave you with the following
thoughts:
1. Work hard, give 100% of your effort, and you won’t be disappointed: Success isn’t
guaranteed in every situaon. However, if you give your all and do your best every
me, you will have a reason to feel proud of yourself, regardless of the outcome.
2. Posivity is crical for success: We all have moments of negavity, but staying posive
when facing challenges or struggles is necessary if we are to reach our goal(s). It helps
us focus on what we have achieved so far and our strengths, rather than our missteps.
3. Learn from your mistakes: Thomas Edison (inventor of the light bulb) said it best: “I
have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Admi=ng that we made
a mistake is a sign of strength and personal growth, not one of weakness. Mistakes are
learning opportunies that show us how we can improve and become be>er versions of
ourselves.
4. It takes a village: Very rarely is one able to achieve success without any help from oth-
ers. Asking for assistance, advice, or guidance is a sign of strength rather than weak-
ness. Don’t be afraid to admit that you need help from your university advisor, the Cul-
tural Division, or your friends. Together we can achieve anything!
5. Leave your community in a be7er state than when you arrived: Giving back to your
community is a great way to bring joy to yourself and others. Look for opportunies to
help others in need both on-campus and off-campus and you will be able to make a
lasng impact.
If you’d like to stay in touch, please feel free to email me at [email protected] or con-
nect via LinkedIn (h>ps://www.linkedin.com/in/nicole-anderson-83a39a39). I wish you all the
best in your current and future endeavors!
Best,
Nicole

My Experience at the Cultural Division
Masdar is a Globally Oriented Instute in Abu Dhabi
Masdar Institute was established in 2007 in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It is a graduate-level,
research-oriented institute of science and technology. It focuses on alternative energy, sus-
tainability and environment. 417 students have been selected and enrolled globally. Masdar
has been established to meet the national policy for Abu Dhabi's leadership, which views re-
search and education as a keystone for the future development.
Masdar has presented itself as a regional and global model for research of the 21st century.
The Institute will redefine learning and discovery in a global context and set new standards in
education, research and scholarship that will benefit the UAE and the world. Its mission is to
be a world-class, graduate-level institution, to produce future world leaders and critical think-
ers in advanced energy and sustainability.
Masdar can be an option for Emirati students who graduated from the US and wish to pursue
higher education in their country as UAE invests in intellectual capital. Those who are inspired
by research can find this opportunity available for them as Masdar institute is guided by the
principles of environmental preservation and human development. In addition, Masdar has
been developed into a living, vibrant and creative research community with students and fac-
ulty from across the world. The plan is to meet with the Abu Dhabi Government’s Vision of
2030, and meet objectives, values and themes as well as the intellectual platform.
I’m Ebtesam AlTeneiji. I am cur-
rently in the Ph.D. program at the
University of San Diego, California,
majoring in Leadership. I recently
received the Ministry of Interior
Excellence Award- Naonal Repre-
sentaon Category. I was deeply
honored at receiving this award.
The award not only inspires me as
an Emira, studying abroad, but
helped insll my confidence more in my effort towards realizing the vision of the
UAE. I hope other Emiras would also aspire to be recognized with this award. I truly
wish this award would also be able to idenfy future leaders commi>ed towards pro-
mong an innovave society ready to take on the challenge what Emiras stand for
towards becoming world leaders.
A li>le bit about me: As a young woman from the United Arab Emirates, I brought
with me a unique story within the fabric of narraves that had been passed down
about women of the Arab world as captured in the media and literature. I became in-
creasingly movated to involve myself with the American community in the hope of
changing the common narraves about the life experiences of women in the Gulf
countries. My own life experience were brought about by the many changes as I ex-
plore in search of fulfilling my quest and passion to understand the emerging leader-
ship paradigm taking place in the region.
A bit about my accomplishments: I received recognion as an outstanding student in
the Master in Leadership Studies at University of San Diego, and I was the first Arab
student to work as an intern with California State Senator Joel Anderson. This intern-
ship provided me an opportunity to build coalion and collaborave relaonships
with policians and business leaders. These interacons provided me the opportuni-
ty to share with them my knowledge about the UAE, our culture, values, and vision
2021.
Ebtesam Alteneiji Honored by HE Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Internaonal Student of the Year 2016 Award
I was truly honored to be chosen as
a recipient of the Internaonal Stu-
dent of the Year 2016 award by the
University of Colorado Boulder. This
award was given to me because as
the president of the CU Internaonal
club, I, alongside my team, have
helped make a difference in the ex-
perience of hundreds of students on
campus by building bridges and con-
necng cultures.
This award tells me I am on the right
track towards creang a more inclusive campus for all. I am very passionate about
helping internaonal students find their place here at CU and experience the Buff
spirit. I was also featured on the front page of Emirates Today newspaper which
talked more about me and my experience abroad so far. I hope I can set a good
role model for all UAE naonals abroad. Wherever you are, you are represenng
the UAE and you should always strive for excellence as our leaders connuously
remind and show us.
