Design and principle of operation

2 Design and principle of oper-ation

TheType3379PneumaticActuator(withspring-returnmechanism)isusedinconjunc-tionwithavalvesuitableforthefoodandpharmaceutical industries.

Principle of operation (Fig. 1)The signal pressure pst creates a force on the pistonsurface(5)whichiscounteractedbythespring(s)(4).Thebenchrangeisdeter-mined by the number of springs used and theircompression, takingintoaccounttherated travel. The actuators are designed for a maximum travelof15 mm.Aspringcompressionisonlypossiblewithsmallertravels.The travel H is proportional to the signal pressure pst. The operating direction of the actuatorstemdependsonhowthespringsare installed in the actuator. The supply air is connected for both operat-ing directions to the top connecting plate.Theconnectionbetweentheactuatorstemand the valve's plug stem differs depending on the valve used. Refer to the mounting and operating instructions of the corresponding valve for more details.

2.1 Versions − Type 3379-00:Type3379ActuatorcombinedwithType 3724Electropneu-maticPositioner(uEB 8395 EN)

− Type 3379-01:Type3379Actuatorforon/off service

− Type 3379-02:Type3379ActuatorcombinedwithType 4740ElectricLimitSwitch

2.2 Operating directionThe operating direction is determined by howthespringsarearrangedintheactuatoranditsinternaldesign(seeFig.1): − Actuator stem retracts − Actuator stem extends

Note:It is not possible to reverse the operat-ing direction.

2.3 Fail-safe actionDepending on the operating direction of the actuator,theactuatorhasdifferentfail-safeactions effective upon air supply failure.Actuator stem extends (fail-close):Whentheairsupplyfails,thespringforcemovesthestemdownwardscausingthevalve to close.

Actuator stem retracts (fail-open):Whentheairsupplyfails,thespringforcemovesthestemupwardscausingthevalvetoopen.
