Charmaine Pereira was once a builderand estate agent who owned two hou-ses in Plattekloof Hills. But life has de-

alt her some serious blows, enough for herto end up with nothing but a borrowed tentto sleep in.“Today I thank God that He gave me the

strength to endure all: emotional pain, bro-kenness, humiliation, bankruptcy. It hasbirthed in me the desire to want to helpothers.“I was married for 16 years and then got

divorced. I married my second husband andopened a pub in the heart of Brooklyn butsold it after he shot himself.She admits she has made some bad decisi-

ons, but she has never touched any substan-ces. The NPO Mitchell’s Mission, a “Safehouse for those who are lost” in Sanddrift,took Charmaine and her third husband inseven years ago, during which Charmainesupported her third husband in his recoveryfrom various addictions and “the wild sideof life”, as she puts it. They stayed there forthree years, first in a tent and then in aWen-dy house.In 2009 Charmaine registered an NPO, Re-

aching out to Others, to help people who aredown and out, to find their feet. “There arejust too many people who end up in squattercamps or on the streets,” she says.Today they stay with their friend, Brenda

Fraught, in her house in Richwood. Theyshare it with 20 other destitute people.Brenda, who also stayed in a room in the

middle of someone’s lounge once, opened upthe bottom half of her two-storey house forhomeless people a year ago. All the spaceshave been divided by curtains and partiti-ons. The beds are tidy and the floors, com-munal bathroom and kitchen are spotless.Although there is hardly space for two peo-

ple to pass in the little corridors between the“rooms”, there is an atmosphere of calm be-nevolence in the house.“I thought Iwould gonutty at first because

I am a little bit of a loner, but I love goingdown there and talking to everybody. Thesepeople are like family.Everybody looksaftereach other, everybody cares for each other.That, to me, is the most beautiful,” saysBrenda. “For people who have nothing, andI literallymean nothing, they are still prepa-red to share. In the beginning this reallybrought tears tomy eyes.My lifewould havebeen empty without them.”

The land has nothing onit except a borehole with water, but nopump.Once her house is sold and the bond is set-tled, all the profits will go to Reaching outto Others, to help fund the Wendy houses,solar panels and a water pump among otherthings.“We can take in people as long as the landis used for farming,” says Lorina Daniels,the small farmer who benefited from a landredistribution case in 2005 and who hasagreed to share her land inMamrewith Rea-ching out to Others.“I am happy for Charmaine and Brendaand I amhappy to be involvedwithmorewo-men who share my vision of farming andcommunity,” she says.“Wewill be staying there as labourers andwe have to farm,” says Charmaine.“I’ve tried farming a few times in my lifebut the timing was not right. The timing isright now. It is different because Imatured,”Brenda says. She stayed on a farm as a childand has dreamt of farming since she was alittle girl.“My family is supporting me. I want to dothis Hillbilly style,” she says. “Once I givethis house up, there is no turning back, wehave to make it. We won’t walk out with ourtails between our legs, we would never,” shesays. “I have no farming experience, but I

have enough passion,” says Charmaine.“You learn as you go along. The soil is goodfor grenadellas and proteas, wewill be doingthat. My son is an excellent welder, he willhelp us make tunnels to plant cucumbersand tomatoes.”Charmaine has already planted 60 avoca-do trees that she cultivated from pips. About18 people from the house are moving to theland and there is a list of those who want tojoin the farm. Charmaine, as CEO of Rea-ching out to Others, is taking charge of theeffort. “Wewon’t, for instance, allow alcoholor other substances. The message is clear:

no substance abuse. I canbevery compassio-nate and understanding, but I can be verystrict also,” she says. The challenge now isto create an infrastructure on the farm. “Ihave the drive and the tenacity and the con-sistency to make it happen.At themoment she is spending all her timesearching for funding and donations. “Thisis not something thatwill happen overnight.It is like building up a little business. rance of having been abandoned by theowner if standing vacant nor should un-paid municipal rates bills be allowed toaccumulate.

V Criminal activities, including drugdealing, prostitution and illegal occupat-ion, should not be allowed.

VWastematerials shouldnot bepermit-ted to accumulate, or be dumped, storedor deposited on the site. An exception ismade for licensed waste disposal facili-ties.

V A building that is partially completedor structurally unsound and is a threat ordanger to the safety of the general publicmust be remedied.

Is your prospective tenant a criminal? Thisquestion seems to feature more and moreas criminals continue to findways to securelease agreements of residential properties,where stable neighbourhoods can becomeproblem areas within months.In the northern suburbs there are several

homes under surveillance by the police andneighbourhood watches where reporteddrug abuse or dealing and prostitution arehappening in overcrowded rented proper-ties, often neighbouring law-abiding fami-lies with little children or vulnerable pensi-oners.Derrek Bock of the VRCID that operates

in Bellville and Parow, says home ownersoften bring bad tenants upon themselves bynot ensuring that their prospective tenantsare who they say they are, or not doing aproper background check on them.“Our call to property owners is to make

sure that your tenant is above board,” hesaid in a letter to TygerBurger.But Neels de Bod, who has been an estate

agent in Parow for 34 years, says this is ea-sier said than done. “Landlords and parti-cularly estate agents, are governed bymoreproperty related laws than can be mentio-ned. Almost without exception these lawsall favour the tenant, whether the tenant isa saint, sinner, criminal or law abiding citi-zen matters none,” he says.He adds that prospective tenants prefer

to tell one about their activitieswithin theirplace of worship, not about their lucrativedrug business.“Agents may not discriminate against

prospective tenants on the basis of race,sex, religion or being refugees,” he says.To this Bock replies: “Our request is that

leasing agents try and find out as much aspossible about prospective tenants, likewhere did they rent from before and fromwhich agent, do they possibly still owe out-standing rentals and so on. We are not hereto confront any leasing agent,weare simplysaying thatwe all need to be extra vigilant.”Another estate agent, Walter Kroggel,

says agents make placements by looking atITC or credit profiles as well as a person’sfinancial, personal and banking profile

Lindsey Jones might not have been in thehot seat for long, but she certainly knowswhat she wants for the Greater Tyger-

berg Partnership (GTP): partnerships – fromthe homeless right up to the mayor.

“It’s an advantage that I don’t know thearea well,” the new chief operations officer,who started on 1 March, told TygerBurger.

“People reminisce about shopping on Voor-trekker Road; about the Cattle Baron restau-rant that used to be a favourite family hang-out. I would be scared if people were to sayI had to walk down Voortrekker Road at nightnow,” she said.

Jones said one of her key functions wouldbe to stop the area from further degradationinto what is referred to as “the Hillbrow ef-fect”.

“We need to have visions here. If we don’tembrace the corridor, the Hillbrow effect willtake hold,” she said.

Key issuesJones said development and safety and se-

curity, and the building of partnerships withrelevant role players, were key issues her of-fice would be handling.

“We have no political agenda. But we needto get everyone on board, build partnerships– from the homeless to the mayor,” she said.

“What makes it so exciting coming into theGTP, is that a lot has been set up, so I can getstuck into getting projects off the ground. No-thing happens overnight,” the former projectmanager at a drilling company said.

Jones said structures were in place totransform the Voortrekker Road corridorand the Bellville central areas within thenext ten years, bringing investment backinto the area through development.

“The foundation document is in placeand we want to grow membership and de-velop the massive potential of the corri-dor,” she said.

Jones, with knowledge of, among others,the mining, agricultural, medical and hos-pitality industries, said working in harshenvironments with a myriad people anddifferent issues prepared her for this job.

“I’ve never been scared of a male-domi-nated environment. Because I’ve workedin so many diverse industries, I can sit ina room of manufacturers and not feel inti-midated.”

Skills trainingJones added that skills training was very

high up on her priority list.“We have done pre-feasibility studies on

skills development. Companies are not lea-ving enough space for apprenticeships. Weneed to get international companies in andoffer apprenticeships at an internationallevel so we can attract investment with ahigh level of skills.”

One of the long term visions of the GTPis to train homeless people as artisans.

“We want people to feel like: ‘I built thatbuilding!’, for them to have a sense of ow-nership.

“If we get the basics right, that which theVRCID has been doing, then we can bringunemployment down,” she said.

Jones said for now she’s taking in theenormity of the GTP’s projects in palatablepieces.

“My role is also primarily operational. Iwill be looking at what the GTP’s core func-tions and disciplines are, and taking it allin bite-sized chunks,” she said.

Some cool cats are destined for stardomas they head off to the States duringMarch.

Five Durbanville cats will be jetting offfrom South Africa permanently to join anAmercan animal film studio, where theywill be trained to play in movies and TVadvertisements.

“There is a huge demand world-wide forthe Traditional Longhair Silver cats”,says cat breeder Alida Delport.

“These cats were preserved from themodernization of the Persian cats. Theystill have the longer noses and larger earsthat were features of the Chinchilla catsof 130 years ago. The breed was acknow-ledged in 2010 as a cat breed in its ownright by the World Cat Federation.”

Three of these cats, namely Magic Ma-ker, Emily and Fidelio, will participate intheir last local show on Saturday 8 Marchin the Durbanville Town hall.

Both Magic Maker and Emily are expe-rienced cat actors who played in internati-onal TV advertisements before.

“It is sad to say goodbye to them”, saysDelport.

“My cats are like my children. ‘Traditional Session’ programme forabout three weeks and it was an enri-ching experience to meet so many musi-cians from all over the world who sharethis love for music,” he says.“There are nine participants who will

Eskom plans to move a powerline from theMuldersvlei substation in the east to Platte-kloof in the west – transecting the sensitiveUitkamp wetland and Uitkamp nature reser-ve in Durbanville.A public open day with two information

sessions will be held about the proposed pro-ject tomorrow (Thursday 6March) from14:00and 17:00 at the Poplars Restaurant at D’Ariawine estate.A presentation will be given and time will

be allowed for questions.The project consists of the dismantling of

the two existing 132 kVpowerlines and repla-cement of it with a single double circuit linefor a length of about 27 km.The starting point of the powerline in the

east is theMuldersvlei substation next to theN1 – close to the crossing with the R304 (Stel-lenbosch-Malmesbury Road).From there it connects to theBriers substa-

tion, which is situated between the Durban-ville/Malmesbury Road and Canary Street.The line will then connect to the Uitkamp

substation – situated between the M48/Vis-sershok Road and Falcon Street in D’Urban-vale.

This is where the line and its pylons willtransect the Uitkamp wetland and Uitkampnature reserve. The Uitkamp wetland con-tains red data species.From theUitkamp substation, the line con-

nects to the Springfield substation situatednear Uiterwyk Street next to Van Riebeeck-shof.The powerline then crosses Tygerberg

hills and finally connects at Plattekloof sub-station, the most western point of the lines– situated next to Plattekloof Road betweenKleinbosch and Welgelegen 3.The purpose of the open day is to share de-

tails of the proposed project and present thefindings of the specialist studies, to enable in-formed comment from the public and otherstakeholders and to provide an opportunityto address questions to a panel of specialistsand/or Eskom personnel.The public participation process underta-

ken for this project was advertised in Octo-ber last year.Comments that were received then and the

comments that will be received as a result ofthis open day will be included in the BasicAssessment Report (BAR).Interested and affected parties will have

another opportunity for comment once thedraft BAR is made available.

Claire, 31, is a drug addict. She is also a rapevictim and a mother, who has tried manytimes to shrug the habit that cost her custo-dy of her six-year-old son.She earns a living begging, and by telling

her story she hopes to reach other addictsandgenerate someunderstandingabout ad-diction and the destructive power of drugs.“Literally my whole life revolves around

getting and using of drugs – everything elsecomes second. Without drugs I can’t functi-on, so in order to do anything else I firstneed to have the drugs. Every single day isspent frantically trying to just survive,”she says.“I usuallywake up startingwithwithdra-

wal symptoms and have to make a planquickly before it gets too late, so I start wal-king in the direction of Bellville, asking pe-ople I meet along the way if they can pleasehelp with taxi fare, or something like that.“I don’t get high from using anymore, it’s

just to stay ‘not sick’. Once I’ve hadmy firstshot (heroin is her drug of choice) for theday I can then start to really make moneyandwill go to different areas every daywithdifferent stories to make money,” she says.

Tried it allShe’s tried most drugs, Claire says.“I started with dagga and alcohol in high

school and soon progressed to doing speedand sometimesmandrax. Later inmy teensI did the whole party scene and regularlyused ecstasy and cocaine, then ephedrineand occasionally hallucinogenic drugs.“At the age of 18 I first used heroin with

my boyfriend at the time – who is now deadas a result of an overdose – and have beenstruggling to stop ever since. I was also ad-dicted to crack in my early twenties. At themoment I am injecting heroin and using tikon a daily basis.”Claire says it’s very easy to get drugs in

Bellville. “It is ridiculously easy to getdrugs – the dealers will actually approachyou if they think you’re looking for drugs.It’s also relatively cheap – at R35 for a quar-ter gram of heroin, or a bag of tik.“I think the police don’t have the resour-

ces or themanpower to effectively dealwithall the drug dealers in Bellville.“They also don’t have enough of the cor-

rect information to catch the right people

to make a difference, because if you catchthe small-time dealers, more will pop upthan there was to begin with.”

Tough loveHermomdied 11 years ago and her father

remarried. He recently gave up trying tohelp her. “Last July they finally kicked meout for good andwouldn’t takeme back andsent my son to live with his father. I thinkit hurts my family too much to see me likethis and they feel helpless to fix it so theyprefer to stay away from me.”Claire says she has no friends left. “I used

(drugs) with my friends from school butthey’re all clean now, except the ones whodied. I have lost twoboyfriends to drugs andcountless friends as well as acquaintancesover the years.”During February this year while on a

high she ended up in Delft where she wasraped, but can’t recall details of her assai-lants. She now regularly frequents the Bell-ville Police Station, but for solace, or “whenI’m having a particularly hard time”.Claire says a lack of self-esteem and a bad

relationship with her parents drove her todrugs. “Different people deal with adversesituations in different ways and I unfortu-nately ended up using drugs.”She describes using drugs as “someone

telling me everything is going to be okay”.But the withdrawal symptoms are “abso-

lute agony”. Using means feeling normal,she says.It broke her heart to lose her son.“Yes, I was high at the time, that’s why

he was taken away, because I was using. Itbreaks my heart every day that I can’t bewith him all the time and be there for himevery day after school and to put him to bedevery night, especially because he’s goingthrough such a hard time and doesn’t un-derstand why he can’t be with me.”Claire has spent a total of almost five ye-

ars – intermittently over the last 12 years– in rehab. “I have to believe I can rehabili-tate – if I knew that for the rest of my lifeI would be enslaved by heroin I honestlythink Iwouldkillmyself rightnow, becausethere would be no point in carrying on likethis with no hope of recovery.”Claire has a simple wish: “To have a

chance at a new life in a small town awayfrom cities and drugs, where there is a jobthat I could do that would sustain me andmy son”.

On Saturday 23 February, aftercoming back from town, I foundmy four-month-old kitten in ourgarden, her back legs werelame. I rushed her to BellvilleAnimal Hospital as I thoughtshe had been hit by a car andher back was broken.

X-rays were taken of her back

and back legs, but nothing waswrong. On Monday, the vetagain took x-rays but this timeof the top half of her body.

It was found that she hadbeen shot with a pellet or airgun. Nothing could be done tosave her and she had to be putto sleep at only four monthsold!

What are we as humanscoming to? Pellet and air gunsshould be banned.

Parents, please do not buyyour parents these dangeroustoys – a pellet gun is not a toy.It manes and kills.

To the person who performedthis barbaric act: what joy didyou get from shooting a harm-less kitten? I hope you rot inhell.

I am the average South Africanand therefore enjoy a decentbraai at least once a week.

However, nowadays it isbecoming a costly exercise withthe prices of everything rising,but being a good South Africanit is not negotiable whether tobraai or not.

So to beat rising costs, Idecided to braai just once aweek and to buy my wood inbulk which will cost me less.Something I never consideredwas the slyness of the “woodpeople” – specifically referringto the people selling wood nextto Kenridge Primary School onweekends. About two weeks agoI had replenished my wood andwent to them and ordered 1 000pieces at R1 per piece – equat-ing to R1 000. It was to bedelivered at my home. In duetime they arrived and deliveredthe ordered wood. After theyleft, I was looking at theamount of wood and it seemedas if I was done in. Whencounting the wood, I discoveredthey delivered only 600 pieces,crooking me of R400. I am sodisappointed, because previous-ly I offered the same guys acold beer for their effort – thiswhile they were cheating meblind!

verment of the People’s Republic of China,is offered by the Confucius Institute at UCTand hosted at the Grand Cape China inMil-nerton.WO Annacletta Mothoalo, spokesperson

for theKleinvlei policewho is attending thecourse, said the purpose of the programmeis to teach officers basic Mandarin in orderto communicate better with Chinese natio-nals in Cape Town.She said the course was also presented in

Johannesburg.According to her the police donot receive

a lot of cases from members of the Chinesecommunity in areas such as Eerste River.“But if you go to an area like Milnerton

or the airport there will be more cases tobe dealt with,” Mothoalo said.“The motivation for the language course

is due to the fact that there are a lot of Chi-nese businesses in South Africa.“What they discovered is that when they

open a case at the police station it is diffi-cult for them to communicate with the poli-ce,” Mothoalo said.She said the Chinese nationals requested

their government’s help in this regard.“The Chinese government said they are

willing to pay and to teach the police offi-cers together with traffic officers and lawenforcement how to speak Mandarin.“The course is very interesting, but it is

The Meridian Pinehurst high school in Dur-banville entered the 21st century of sciencesand technology with the assembling and“launching” of its very own satellite, a Can-Sat, last week.The satellite, which was developed by

F’SATI (French South African Institute ofTechnology) in collaboration with the CurroCentre for Education Excellence, was “laun-ched” last Wednesday under the guidance ofJaco de Kock, Curro Schools’ curriculum ad-visor for natural sciences and technology,and Bertus Brand, a science and technologyteacher.The purpose is to prepare young scientists

into the field of exploration, according to DeKock. The two grade 9 classes assembledtheir own CanSat. After the satellite was as-sembled, itwas “launched”on the rugby fieldwith great expectation from the learners.According to Wikipedia, a CanSat is used

to teach space technology similar to the tech-nology used in miniaturised satellites.A CanSat – short for satellite in a can – is

a simulation of a real satellite – integratedwithin the volume and shape of a regular softdrink can, said De Kock.“The challenge is to fit all the major sub-

systems found in a satellite, such as powerand communications, into a tin can of 450 ml.“After release from a captive helium bal-

1.7 Eienaars moet om die korting aansoek doen in die jaar wat ’n nuwe algemenewaardasie of aanvullende waardasie, na gelang van omstandighede, inwerking gestel word. Aansoeke met die inwerkingstelling van ’n nuwealgemene waardasie moet die Stad bereik teen 31 Augustus van dieboekjaar waarin die waardasie in werking gestel sal word. Aansoeke met dieinwerkingstelling van ’n aanvullende waardasie moet die Stad bereik teendie laaste dag van die derde maand na die inwerkingstellingsdatum vandie waardasie. Indien nie, kan geen sodanige korting vir daardie boekjaretoegestaan word nie.

2. VERBRUIKSTARIEWE EN -HEFFINGSBTW teen 14% word by die volgende dienste bygevoeg: water, sanitasie, elektrisiteiten vaste-afvalbestuur.

2.1 WATER

Drie stelle watertariewe word voorgestel (10%-verminderingstarief, 20%-

verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppel aan die vlakvan watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die 10%-verminderingstariefas norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, sal dít die tarief wees wat geld. Ditkan egter later na gelang van verdere vereiste beperkings hersien word.

’n Verhoging van 8% in waterverbruikstariewe word voorgestel.

2.1.12 In pas met die aanvaarding van die beleid oor stedelike landbou is ’n gratistoewysing van 10 kℓ per maand ingestel vir die uitsluitlike doeleinde vanbestaansboerdery deur omskrewe kwesbare groepe.

2.1.13 Huishoudings in wooneenhede op gemengdegebruik-eiendomme kan om’n gratis toewysing van 6 kℓ per eenheid per maand aansoek doen. ’nBeëdigde verklaring sal vereis word, en die aansoek sal op grond van diepersentasie van die hoofgebruik ondersoek en oorweeg word.

2.1.14 Bestaande skuilings vir haweloses/ouetehuise (buiten dié wat ashuishoudelike groepe geklassifiseer is)/tehuise vir die gesondheid vandiegene met fisiese of geestelike gestremdhede

Hoogtepunte van voorgestelde wysigings

• Die persentasie stygings in blok 2 van die volledig huishoudelike kategorieoorskry die standaardstyging weens die verlaging in die subsidievlak in hierdieblok, wat op sy beurt deur verbruikspatrone en die watervraagstrategiegenoodsaak word.

• Trapsgewyse tariewe (1-6) is vanaf 1 Julie 2013 vir die huishoudelikegroepskategorie ingestel op grond van vorige oorlegpleging met kliënte.Verdere stappe is gedoen om dié kategorie verder in lyn met die volledigehuishoudelike kategorie te bring.

• Veranderinge in diverse tariewe en prosedures, onder meer die voortgesettestygings met betrekking tot behandelde afvalwater (bepaald vir gholfbane),uitroeptariewe van watervraagbestuurtoestelspanne vir kliënte wat niédeernisgevalle is nie, sowel as voorafbetaalde brandkrane, word in bylae 4 bydie begrotingsdokument uiteengesit.

• ’n Nuwe tarief vir die toepassing van serwitute van deurgang met betrekkingtot water sowel as die vereistes vir deposito’s/waarborge wat in geval vaninfrastruktuurskade aangewend moet word.

• Staking van verbruikersdeposito’s vir huishoudelike kliënte met ingang van1 Julie 2014.

2.2. SANITASIE

Drie stelle sanitasietariewe word voorgestel (10%-verminderingstarief,20%-verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppelaan die vlak van watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die10%-verminderingstarief as norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, sal dít dietarief wees wat geld. Dit kan egter later na gelang van verdere vereiste beperkingshersien word.

• RESIDENSIËLE TARIEWE: Algehele styging in inkomste uit die groep is 7,63%,maar individuele kliënte sal waarskynlik verskillende stygings waarneem opgrond van werklike verbruik. Die verskil tussen die gemiddelde en werklikestyging spruit uit die verhaling van die tekort aan inkomste uit die hulptarief virblok 1.

• Verbruikers wat 450 kWh per maand ontvang, sal dieselfde persentasie stygingwaarneem, ongeag die tarief wat vir hulle geld. Daar is dus geen verandering indie subsidievlak wat hierdie verbruikers op die hulptarief ontvang nie.

• GRATIS BASIESE ELEKTRISITEIT: Hulptariefkliënte wat minder as 250 kWh permaand ontvang, sal ’n gratis basiese toevoer van 60 kWh kry, terwyl diegene wattussen 250 kWh en 450 kWh per maand ontvang ’n gratis basiese toevoer van25 kWh per maand sal kry.

• Die kategorie “Klein kragverbruiker 1” met die buitespits-kombinasie word sedert1 Julie 2012 tot slegs bestaande kliënte beperk. Die buitespits-komponente stygook met ’n bogemiddelde bedrag om hierdie tarief uiteindelik uit te faseer.

• Tydspesifieke tariewe is herstruktureer om minimum pariteit met Eskom Megaflexte verseker.

LET WEL: Maandelikse diensheffings word bereken as die daaglikse diensheffing,vermenigvuldig met die getal dae in die rekeningtydperk.

With their mellow tunes andeclectic style, this Bracken-fell band really does cover

all bases.In the short time they’ve been to-

gether, acoustic duo, Stone Jets ha-ve already proven that they can sa-tisfy almost any taste.From &Union and Alexander Bar

in Cape Town, to Bay Harbour Mar-ket and Ellingtons, vocalist GivenNkanyane and guitarist, ManfredKlose, are comfortable on almostany stage.Given has a novel way of explai-

ning the band’s sound: “Thinkabout a mixture of beef stroganoff,with chutney and banana.”“It doesn’t seem like it works, but

that is some delicious stuff.”Moving away from food,Given ex-

plains that their music is a mixtureof everything they like which stemsfrom where they come from. Forexample, Given comes from an R’nB, gospel, jazzy background, whileManfred has more of a rock back-ground.

Song writingGiven says he likes to think their

music is a mixture of blues, a littlebit of rock, some folk, and “a hint ofeverything”.Manfred points out that they are

still growing with their sound andare writing as many songs as possi-ble at the moment, in an attempt tofigure out what exactly it is thatthey do.“For now we just want to make

goodmusic and seewhat people’s re-actions are to that,” he says.Stone Jets formed only last year,

but today (Wednesday) they are re-leasing their debut-EP,River, whichincludes five songs that the two re-corded when they came together.The EP will be available from

most digital distribution stores, butphysical copies will be available attheir shows. They are also looking

at distributing it through local mu-sic stores.Stone Jets are working on their

first full-length album which theyhope to release later in theyear. “Weare writing as many songs as wecan, so that our debut album is jam-packed with hard-knock hits,” Gi-ven says.Given started writing songs when

he lived inCapeTownbefore, but be-cause he didn’t understand the in-dustry, he decided to move back toJohannesburg, where he kept wri-ting and tried to put a band together.

inMarch last year to record some ofthe songs he had written, which iswhere he met Manfred, who was toplay guitar on his recordings.“It was like Eskom had just swit-

While we all know localrock star, Mark Haze,as just that, a rocker, he

wants to show fans another si-de.That’s what he’ll be doing

with his new show at Die Boerthis Friday 7 March.Mark says creating different

kinds of shows for corporategigs has allowed him to showca-se his different talents and re-minded himwhyhe lovesmusicin the first place.“Before you are a full time

musician, youworknine to five,you cram in a rehearsal wher-ever you can with your band,you get on stage, you belt outeverything you have inside ofyou, and rock ’n roll, forme, stillis the best way forme to expressmyself,” the Idols star says.However, Mark says lately

he’s been enjoying playing themusic he didwhen hewas youn-ger, like a little bit of blues andsome acoustic stuff.The new father says he uses a

lot of time when his little one isasleep to practise different sty-les. He has also just done a duetwith local blues songstress, Na-tasha Meister and she will alsobe on stage at his show at DieBoer.

He further statesthat one of the key objectives of the leagueis to leave a legacy for participants by buil-ding tracks on school property or commu-nity grounds.

Racing towards gloryWhat a day Sunday turned out to be

at the fourth and final cycling raceof the 2014 Hero Challenge Criteri-

um series at Century City.The event started at 14:15 with the catego-

ry 4 race, which hosted all club membersthat wanted to participate, followed by cate-gory 3 at 15:15 which comprised of the u-16,

u-14 and u-12 cyclists.Shortly after category 3 started their race

the skies turned grey and opened up witha slight drizzle, but the race ended in sun-light and relatively dried up roads. Every-one sighed in relief, but unfortunately thiswas short lived. As category 2 lined up theskies opened up once again, more fiercely

this time. Miserable weather aside, the rid-ers held on and raced their hearts out in avery tight and often nail biting race.

In category 1 for elite riders, we werejoined by some of the top cyclists in SouthAfrica. This included the Bonita’s Pro Cy-cling Team, WCC Africa MTN QhubekaFeeder Team and ASG. This promised to bean edge-of-your-seat race and the cyclistsdidn’t disappoint.

From the first bell the racers gave it eve-rything they had despite the wet and rainyconditions. Ryan Felgate of ASG took firstin the elite category, followed by Clint Hen-dricks and Morne van Niekerk who weremere split seconds apart. Maroesjka Mat-thee, amultiple SA champion, took the hon-ours in the ladies’ category.

There were three hotspots during theelite race at the 15, 30 and 45-minute markswith Clint Hendricks taking the first spot,Jayde Julius the second and Ryan Felgatethe third.

The fun isn’t over yet. Lights By Linea inassociation with KIA Diep River, Trek,Craft and eCentric Payment Systems willhost awinter series of longdistance one-dayraces, with another group of criteriumevents in Spring.
