A makeshift trolley was, for a while, known as Tanzanite Boulevard lastweek Tuesday.

The road sign was supposedly to be soldfor scrapmetal by two suspects for aboutR1.80 per kilogram.

That would equate to about R36.The City of Cape Town’s Metals Theft

Unit, also known as the “Copperheads”, ar-rested the twonearMontagueGardens afterthey initially responded to an unrelatedcomplaint.

“Last week Tuesday the Copperheads re-ceived a tip-off about cable theft in Milner-ton,” said Metals Theft Unit assistant chiefNeil Arendse.

Earlier that evening a vehicle had colli-ded with a traffic signal pole and it was re-ported that suspects were stealing the cab-ling from inside the pole. However, when

they arrived at the scene, the cables wereintact and there was no one around. Theysearched the area and noticed twomen (oneof whom was pushing a makeshift trolley)acting suspiciously on the corner of Platte-kloof andKoebergRoad. On inspection, offi-cers found the road sign for Tanzanite Bou-levard in their possession.

The two suspects were arrested for pos-session of stolen property and taken to theMilnerton police station.

Scrap for drugsA scrapmetal dealer, who has been in the

industry for more than a decade, says roadsigns are made from mild steel.

“If a sign is thinner than 3 mm then it issub grade, and for this you get approximate-ly R1.80 per kilo,” Parow Valley’s MichaelErasmus from MegaMetals. “Having beenin this industry for awhile I have dealt withmany people who steal road signs and tryto sell it to us. They are generally not trying

to sell these for bread or milk, but ratherfor drugs. So for R36 they can probably buyabout two tik ‘lollies’.”

Erasmus adds it is illegal to buy metalsuch as road signs, and they assist Parowpolice in busting these kind of criminals.

Stolen metal“These guys don’t normally come to busi-

nesses such as ours, but rather to ‘bucketshops’, who then sold bulk loads to us. Wewill not, however, buymetal that was clear-ly stolen. Some bucket shops nonethelesspay criminals for bringing them stolen me-tals. If there wasn’t a market for it then the-se signs would not be stolen.”

The city spends hundreds of thousands ofrands every year to replace stolen roadsigns.V Residents are reminded to contact the Copperheads on 0800 222 771 with any tipoffs that couldlead to the apprehension of those involved in theillegal metals trade.

With the aid ofmodern technology, the Pa-row police managed to put away severalcriminals recently.

Parow police spokesperson Lt KevinWilliams said a man had his phone snat-ched on Station Road on 3 June.

The phone was then sold to a cellphoneshop in the same street. The man tracedhis phone and police arrested five suspects(all aged 25), including the shop owner.

On the same day a man was robbed ofhis tablet and phone in Alexander street. The victim reported the incident to hisma-nager, who activated the tracker device onthe cell phone. The phone was traced to aresidence in Victoria Street in Parow anda suspect was arrested.

The suspects in both cases appeared inthe Bellville Magistrates court.

Parow detective constable OlebogengKeokame won a guilty verdict in the Bell-ville Magistrates court after investigatinga case inwhichphones to the value of near-ly R600 000 were stolen.

Ricardo Maneveldt from Mitchell Plainwas found guilty and sentenced to 5 yearsimprisonment (which was also conditio-nally suspended for 5 years), for stealing160 cell phones from his employer, Cell C.

Fever trees hacked for medicineMAGRIET THERON

Vandalism or survival? In Parow and Bellville, Fever trees

that line the streets are, almost wit-hout exception, being stripped of the brightgreenbark thatmake themsuchpopular de-corative trees. The Xanthophloea Acacia, one of the 40

sub species of the Acacia tree, is not calledthe Fever Tree for nothing. This tree is wi-dely used in different cultures for its medi-cinal properties.“There is a man with a funny accent that

comes here from time to time with a pangaand a bag,” says a car guard, known onlyasMaria, at the parking area inVanEyssenroad in Parow, where Fever trees are plan-ted on all the islands between the parkingspaces. Maria says the man hacks the barkoff the trees with his panga. He told her heuses it as medicine. She says some of the re-sidents in the area have asked her to callthem when she sees him, so that they canalert thepolice.Almost all the saplingshavebeen damaged like this.According to profBen-Erik vanWyk,who

teaches Botany at the University of Johan-nesburg and is an expert in the medicinaluses of plants, the bark of the Fever tree isused to treat Malaria, abdominal pain andis widely used as a good-luck charm. The Fever tree is also one of the Ubulawu

trees, a term for plants that is believed tocause visionary and prophetic dreams, allo-wing one to connect with and receive mes-sages from the ancestors and spiritualworld. The bark is also prepared to treat fe-ver and eye complaints as well as sickle cellanaemia. In the 1990s a study showed that the Fever

treewas the sixthmost popular tree to utili-se formedicinal properties around the Kru-ger National Park.DeoTy, alsoknownasDrNapoleon, inPa-

row, is a traditional healer from Kenya. Hesays he sees many patients, from westerncultures too, who require traditional medi-cation. He says the medication in his tradeis mostly made from plant materials andhas to bepreparedondemand.Tyordershismedicinal ingredients fromEastAfrica, butsays some healers would forage for ingredi-ents locally, because for some recipes, thebark needs to be fresh.

The young Fever trees in Van Eyssen street will not survive long if the bark is stripped off likethis. PHOTOS: MAGRIET THERON

Fever trees, although very popular as fastgrowing, decorative trees, are just as soughtafterby traditional healers, who use the bark fortreating an array of ailments.

The Soccer World Cup 2014 has finally ar-rived.

How magnificent it was when South Af-rica hosted it in 2010. The first goal scoredby Siphiwe Tshabalala followed by the fa-mous dancing from Bafana Bafana reallywarmed our hearts. It made us believe. This was a start of a fantastic month ofspectacular soccer.

Vuvuzelas came out in full swing eve-rywhere and a cacophony sounded allround. The big vuvuzela signalled everytime a goal was scored. Neighbours com-peted to blow the loudest. We even calledeach other out by blowing them duringhalftime to talk about the game. We dis-cussed goals scored, corners wasted andfouls acted out to cause the referee toaward unnecessary penalties.

Every car had at least one flag or mirrorsock attached to it displaying the SouthAfrican flag and/or other country’s.Whenstopping at the robots we all just smiledat each other.

Most people adopted another country af-ter Bafana Bafana failed to go through tothe next round.

We as Capetonians travelled by trainjust to walk the Fanwalk. Even though so-me didn’t have tickets to watch the match,we were there. And we will never forget.

colourful floats, performing artists, joyfulyoungsters, older folk, helpful police andcaring traffic officers who made the walkso enjoyable.

Photos were taken, smiles were shared, and memories were made. Coffee was bre-wed. Burgers were sold. Big screens sho-ne, with thousands of eyes fixed on them.People dressed in the official shirt of thecountry they supported that evening.

It was winter. It was cold. But we hadso much fun. Cape Town was probably thesafest place ever. Transport was probablythe best. Late at night it was safe to comehome by train.

Whenwewalked in themall in ourBafa-na shirts, or anywhere,weembraceddiffe-rent people and talked to each other.

I miss the world cup. We came togetheras a nation, together with the world. Wewere one.

Sport can bind a nation together. As Mandela said, “Sport has the power

to change the world. It has the power toinspire. It has the power to unite peoplein a way that little else does. It speaks toyouth in a language they understand.Sport can create hope where once therewas only despair. It is more powerful thangovernment in breaking down racial bar-riers.”

Let’s all enjoy the world cup and maythe best team win.

In 2013is 45 000 diagnoses gemaak.

Sedert 2011 is DR-TB-behandeling gede-

Criminals are greedy, not needyASTRID FEBRUARIE

@febastrid

Most crime, such as home invasionsand hijackings, are motivated bygreed. Few criminals steal to put food

on the table.Christopher Plum, a 34-year-old former

prisoner who did a stint in prison for armedrobbery, gave insight into the criminalmind.

The talk at Oude Moulen Technical Highschool on Thursday 29 May was attended byresidents, police and the neighbourhoodwatch.

Plum, who served 12 years of his 25-yearsentence for armed robbery, spoke freelyabout his life before his sentencing.

“I believe I am a rehabilitated prisoner. While I was in prison I had time to reflecton the things I did and how I hurt the victimsof the robberies I committed,” he said.

“I felt I needed to change. No one shouldbe treated the way I treated people.”

Plum joined the Prison Care and SupportNetwork while behind bars. The programmeis aimed at empowering inmates and en-couraging their reform. He says many of thepeople whom he knew were involved inhouse robberies and other crimes, were mo-tivated solely by greed.

Blame game“They want things that other people

have,” he says. “They blame the system, they blame apartheid, but they never blamethemselves.”

An underlying anger builds up withinthem and they try to convince themselves ifthey commit a crime they would makethings even, he says.

“Even though they know they are stealingmaterial things which can be replaced, thesatisfaction of the crime lasts only a shortwhile.”

Plum was released on Thursday 22 Octo-ber 2009, a pivotal moment for him as he feltrenewed and wanted to transform into a bet-ter person.

However, he says, his family still believedhe was the same.

“It was difficult for my family to acceptme, but after a while they realised I hadchanged. I was a different man. I was no long-er the uncle who would take his gun, walktwo or three hous-es down the road, rob the people anduse the money tobuy food for myfamily. I hadchanged,” he says.

Plum explainedthe process he fol-lowed before com-mitting a houserobbery.

First he and the thieves he worked withwould find a house suitable to break into.

They would steal the mail, scrutinise it forany details, and then look up the homeown-er’s name in the telephone directory.

They would then call the number to checkif anyone was at home.

After this they would go to the address andkeep it under surveillance, checking howmany people live there, what time they leavefor work and return, and if there is a domes-tic worker or gardener.

After a week, they would know exactlywhat the residents’ routines were.

Then they would meet and devise a planof action.

“After we have decided on the time andday we would go to the house, one of uswould jump over the wall and wait in the gar-den – in a place where it is dark, where noone will see us,” he says.

Plum said the real “trouble” starts whenresidents return, pulling in to their drive-

way and getting out the car. They would then strike.“Do not try to be strong or in control when

this happens. Remember the robber is justas scared and nervous as you are. They donot want to go to prison or be killed,” Plumsays.

The victim is threatened, taken inside andbound.

What follows is the systematic ransackingof the house andtaking any valua-bles they find.

Business robberyPlum said they

would always getan insider to assistwith informationneeded to pull offthe robbery. Atbusiness robberies

they would charm the secretary or recep-tionist and so obtain information. At homerobberies, they would target domestic work-ers or gardeners.

The gang would rent a “nice” car from acar rental agency. They would then drive tothe airport, find a car with matching colourand model, and copy that vehicle’s numberplate and serial number.

“We had a guy who would cut a newnumber plate for us and we would removethe number plate from the hired car and re-place it with the new one,” he says.

One of them would then dress smartly andshow up at a business they are targeting inthe hired car.

Once inside they would usually target awoman working at the business.

“We would take her out and get to knowher and after a while the questioning wouldbegin,” he says.

The woman would be asked where the“boss” kept the safe and where the panic but-

ton is, Plum says.“We would then follow the boss to and

from work and once we get to the workpremises we would rob them.

“Usually we would not rob a place with apanic button, because it is silent and onecannot hear it. If there is one we would abortthe robbery,” he said.

Plum’s advice to business owners is to en-sure their staff walk around with cordlesspanic buttons, as the robbers are familiarwith the usual spot a panic button is placed.

“We would know if someone attempts topress the panic button when they keep theirhands below the desk. Do not put your lifeat risk. Keep calm and always do as the rob-ber says. This way no one will get hurt,” hesaid.

Plum said he discovered that throughPrison Care and Support Network’s work-shops and talking and dissecting the circum-stances of his crime, he realised and accept-ed he had no valid reason to be a criminal.

“Blaming my circumstances on the past isfalse motivation, because we know what weare doing is wrong, especially when we arein the act of committing the crime. We knowdeep down what we are doing could get uskilled, sentenced to prison or result in thedeath of an innocent person. But we do it be-cause we think we will be better off.”

Plum’s honesty won his audience over thegeneral attitude from residents was that ofappreciation.

Many questioned how they could safe-guard themselves and their property.

He also told them to change their routineas criminals are quick to track their everymove and use this to their advantage. Peopleshould ensure they remain observant andreport suspicious behaviour to the police.

Security systems should be regularlychecked and kept on at all times as criminalswill take advantage of any laxity on the partof homeowners or business owners.

E-cigarette users happily “vaping” in lo-cal pubs and restaurants in Cape Townmaysoonbeout in the cold, as thenatio-

nal Department of Health is consideringamendments to tobacco legislation.Currently, the “e-cig” cannot be read into

the definition of a tobacco product in termsof the Act as it does not contain tobacco –hence regulations relating to smoking tobac-co in public places do not apply.“Amendments are needed to the legislati-

on to ensure that e-cigarettes are regulatedand this is currently under consideration,”said citymaycomember for health, Benedic-ta van Minnen.

This current status quo regarding the is-sue was supplied by the national depart-ment to the City of Cape Town when it re-cently sought a legal opinion on thematter.“Wearenot inundatedwith complaints, ho-wever, there has been an increase in thenumber of enquiries, especially from ma-nagers and owners in the workplace. Thenature of the enquiries are whether smo-king of the product in offices and canteensis allowed; if they should adapt their work-place smoking policy; whether patrons cansmoke the device in the non-smoking areaof restaurants; and whether the fines arethe same as for smoking cigarettes in pu-blic places,” she said.

Tobacco alternativeAccording to her, the city specifically

wanted to know whether they can enforcethe current tobacco legislationone-cigaret-tes.Electronic cigarettes are an alternative

method of consuming nicotine, the addicti-ve chemical found in tobacco. They look like cigarettes, but contain no

tobacco or otherharmful chemicals suchascarbon dioxide and tar. The “e-cig”, whichwas patented in China in 2003, is batteryoperated and converts liquid into a vapourthat is inhaled.Although manufacturers claim it to be

the healthy alternative to tobacco cigaret-tes, there are some concerns over the possi-bility that the vapour exhaled might con-tain harmful elements.“The jury is still out on exactly how safe,

or not, e-cigarettes are. We know that someestablishments allow the use of these devi-ces indoors because they emit vapour in-stead of smoke,” said van Minnen. She says these devices are currently con-

troversial worldwide because they are sonew and there is a lack of long-term scienti-fic evidence to support their safety.“Somecountries suchasFranceandAus-

tralia have gone as far as banning the use ofthese products in public places.

Review“The World Health Organization (WHO) is

currently reviewing the existing evidencearound e-cigarettes and preparing a paper forsubmission to themeeting of theParties of theWHO Framework Convention on TobaccoControl, which occurs later this year,” shesaid.“They are also working with national regu-

latory bodies to look at regularity options aswell as toxicology experts tounderstandmoreabout the impact e-cigarrettes may have onhealth.”When asked whether the city would like to

see the current legislation changed to include

e-cigarettes into its ambit, she was ambiva-lent.“Some studies support the use and others

oppose it. As stated, in the absence of suffici-ent scientific evidence regarding the safetyand effects of the product, thismakes it diffi-cult to support or not support the use of e-ci-garettes in public places.“Presently, it is not covered in the legisla-

tion and we will therefore await guidancefrom the National Department of Health,”she said.In New York City, new regulations pla-

cing e-cigarettes under the same rules asnormal cigarettes, were imposed two weeksago, banning it from public places such asbars and restaurants. In the UK, the debate rages on.

A very disturbing letterappeared in TygerBurger onThursday 4 June (“Deathpenalty a matter for debate”).The writer, after ranting on

about addicts asks: “Is it nottime that we reopen thediscussion around the deathpenalty?”Our country decided to

abolish the death penaltyalmost twenty years ago, notby political parties or parlia-ment, but by the ConstitutionalCourt which delivered thisdecisive verdict with a unani-mous 11-0 vote.America was not so lucky.

This superpower and all othernations where the deathpenalty is in force are the mostviolent in the world. Not a week goes past that

the news is not dominated bykillings, bombings, abductionsor other forms of violenceemanating from these coun-tries. Death penalty is a violentact and can only operate in anenvironment of fear, hatred, vengeance, racism and retribu-tion. People who constantlyadvocate reintroduction of thedeath penalty are sooner orlater going to commit violentacts themselves. Clive Derby-Lewis and his henchmanJanusz Walus are a goodexample. Friday nights onecould hear him instigatingright-wing violence on radiophone-in programmes.Where will this bloodshed

end? Today it’s addicts, crimi-nals, murderers and rapists –tomorrow it will be homosexu-als, alcoholics, dwarfs, albinos, and who knows who else. Thatis how the Nazis’ reign ofextermination started. The writer and others like

him should rethink theirtirade. Our country took thecorrect decision.Anyone who supports the

death penalty is himself apotential murderer.

Death penaltyis a violent act

With reference to the letterpublished in your newspaper, Icompletely agree with EllenHusselmann (“Simpatie met diéarme honde”, TygerBurger, 11June).It breaks my heart but

despite feeding the poor ani-mals, there is nothing more Ican do except sign petitions andmake my voice heard. The law pertaining to animals

is dismal in this country.Personally, I don’t see a differ-ence between humans andanimals. The horror stories in the

news of late is another reasonwhy the powers that be shouldchange the law and protect thedefenceless. They are abused, exploited, and cruelty is on therise.Let’s stand together and call

on those we voted for, and seeif they can walk the walk andnot just talk.Come on DA, animal lovers

also voted to keep you inpower.I can only hope, but past

behaviour is a good indicator offuture behaviour.

Weer Langenhoven: “Gee my ’n man:

Wat sê wat waar is, as die duiwel daar is;Wat doen wat reg is, as die regter weg is;Wat trou by sy gewete bly, as hy straf inplaas van beloning kry.”Dís die mense wat ons nodig het.

en jy is reg om heeldag by die winkels tegaan rondloop, te gaan fliek en koffiedrink.En nou loop ek die gevaar om soos die

laatnag-televisie-advertensies te klink, maar dit is nie al wat jy kry met hierdieresep nie!Gebruik hierdie basisresep om vele an-

der pastageregte te prakseer en te maak.Met hierdie resep sien jy nou hoe maklikdit is. Jykanselfs spaghetti inklei-ner stukkies breek en so gebruik.Voeg dan jou maalvleis en ander be-

standdele by vir heerlike spaghetti bolog-nese.

A hand picked selection of 150 beautiful new Frenchchildrens’ books are waiting to be read at the ParowLibrary. The books were donated by the Alliance Française

and the French Institute as part of a literary collabora-tion between France and South Africa. Parow Libraryis the second South African library to receive a donati-on from them.“These books can be taken out from today,” said head

librarian Kathleen Laishley upon receiving the bookson 11 June.“Many children in this area are French speaking, but

they do not necessarily read or write in their mothertongue,” she says. “Itmight be very important for themto be able to do that, should they one day return to theircountry of origin.”Natalie Marinus, head of Parow Preparatory school,

says they have many French speaking learners fromFrancophone Africa.“Some of these children can hardly speak English,”

she says, but adds she often sees in them a hunger tolearn that exceeds that of the South African children.Language intervention is high on the school’s priority.“We are definitely going to use these books.”The collection includes novels, cartoons, encyclopae-

dias and picture books.

It was a chilly winter’s day in August 2001,when Robert Hurn closed the big doors ofthe Grain Elevator and Silo complex in

the Cape Town harbour for the last time. Ashe walked away he had tears in his eyes, aheavy heart, and a piece of history in hishand. In his lounge in Morgenster, Brackenfell

he takes this priceless item out, dusts it offandd, with the enthusiasm of a young boy, shows off the workings of the antique oldpadlock that used to lock the silo doors.Since closing down more than 10 years

ago, the old grey landmark built by theSouth African Railways and Harbours in1921 has stood derelict.“There is a lot of history there, in that buil-

ding,” says Robert, who is now retired, as heunlocks the old solid brass lock edged on itsside with the company name, Yale & TownMfg Co.“On the last day, after paying the last wag-

es and closing up, I took off this lock and re-placed it with another, it was my souvenir,”he says.“I will only sell it to the new developers

on condition that they box frame it and hangit near the old door in the entrance hall ofthe new art gallery,” he says in the hope thatold remnants of the building will feature inthe new design. The old silo is to be transformed into the

world’s largestmodernAfricanartmuseum. It is to be theZeitzMuseumofContemporaryArtAfrica. ThemassiveR500million projectrecently started and is set for completion inMarch 2016 under the watchful eye of visio-

nary architect Thomas Heatherwick. (seearticle in TygerBurger, 4 June). When Robert starts talking about the buil-

ding where he spent two decades of his wor-king life as silo foreman, his eyes light up.Robert moved fromEast London in 1980 to

take up the job offered by the South AfricanRailways and Harbours (SAR).He got to know every nook and cranny of

the building and he eagerly explains its wor-kings.“These silos stored an incredible 30 000

tons of maize and it would sometimes takeus days to load one carrier ship. Some of the-se ships were loadedwith up to 19 000 tonnesof grain.”“In the mornings before loading started,

Iwouldwalkup thegangplankonto the ship,

but when I left the ship at the end of the day,no gang plank was necessary. Due to theweight of the ship I would merely hop ontothe harbour platform.”The old Silo also holds a bag full of perso-

nal memories for Robert. On holidays and weekends friends and fa-

milies of employees often spent afternoonsin theoldport captain’s office situatedon topof the silo roof.“From here we had the best vantage point

of the Cape Town harbour, Table Mountainand the city and often watched the occasio-nal firework displays from there at night.”“I also remember watching big ships or

sail boats coming into theharbour.Onmistymornings, it was remarkable, the big sailsjust suddenly appearing from the mist.”

There were tragedies too. Especially gris-ly was the story of the young man who fellinto an empty bin, in the years before thebins were grated.“He was sent down to the bin to run an er-

rant, where he made a misstep and fell intothe 57 meter high empty silo. Nobody saw itand wondered what had happened to himthat day. The silo was unknowingly filled upon top of him and everyone went home thatevening. It was only the next day that his bo-dy was discovered when someone notedblood dripping from the bottom of a silo. Wehad to run all the wheat out to retrieve hisbody.”Many times, workers hoisted down the si-

los to clean them, had to be rescued whengrain came loose from the sides and trappedthem neck high. Robert himself had to onceendure this. For many Capetonians and various deve-

lopers eyeing the site over the years, it mayhavebeenan eyesore but forRobert it remai-ned an engineering marvel or its time.It was probably this passion which lead to

Robert being approached by industrial ar-chaeologist David Worth, the man who ac-cording to Robert was instrumental in thepreservation of the old silo.“I took him out there and showed him

around, pointed out the details of the buil-ding and it’s workings,” he says.Robert too, is ecstatic about the future of

the building.“I can rest assured in the knowledge that

this building will not be broken down for avery long time. My first grandson was bornthis week, and I look forward to taking himto this museum one day and telling him thisis where his grandpa worked.”

Northlink college students from the Per-forming Arts, Engineering and Clothingdepartments celebratedAfricaDay in styleat Artscape. The African theme was captu-red in the outfits the performing arts stu-dents wore on the day, which were desig-ned and made by the clothing productionstudents. During their performance, theyinvited Artscape visitors to take colouredpellets and place them into a 1.8m by 1.6mAfrican continent mould constructed bythe engineering students.“We are honoured as one of the colleges

in the Cape Town area to have been chosento participate in the celebrations of AfricaDay,” said Northlink HOD Rene Bonzet.“The college got the chance to share the

students’ talents and cultural backgroundaswell as celebrate our diversity as anFETCollege, and our African heritage.”

Twoyears after releasingherdebut album, Natasha Meis-ter is backwith newmaterialfor her fans. The Canadian born local

singer will be releasing anew EP, What goes Around, later this month.Natasha’s debut album,

Half Way, was released in2012 after already receivingacclaim from local audienceswho dubbed her “The Meis-ter”. The title isn’t undeser-ved, as Natasha is the onlywoman in Africa endorsedby both Fender (USA) and Lakewood (Ger-many) guitar makers. The new EP provides a taste of her next

full length album set for release next year.Produced by Theo Crous from Bellville

Studios, the EP consists of two new songs, along with three reprised versions of songsoff her first album.“The first single on the EP, ‘I Hope You

Know’ is something totally different to myformer music,” Natasha says, adding, “it isa pop/rock song and lyrically it’s cheeky.”

She explains that the song isabout a relationship thatdidn’t end very well. The second new song, ‘Sha-

dows’, is Natasha’s favourite.“This track is a reference togood and evil and an innerfight to choose a side.” Shesays the song gives fans agood idea of what to expect onthe new album. The three songs Natasha

chose to rework acousticallyfromher first albumaremoreemotional and mellow.“They’re about letting go of

past heartbreaks and letting go of the oldme.”She gives fans a rawer version of her older

songs and a connection with the lyrics.Natasha performs both as a solo artist and

in a trio called the Natasha Meister Bandwith drummer Lance Rhoda and bassist Re-vaughn Sackanary.V Natasha will officially launch the new EP at Acesn Spades Bar in the CBD on Thursday 19 June. Ticketscost R40 at the door.V Visit her website at www.natashameister.com.

UWC boxers off to national champs

Sinethemba Blom (red) won gold in the Western Cape Boxing championships.

Two UWC boxers have secured their tic-kets to the SouthAfricanNational Box-ing championships after winning their

final bouts in the Western Cape BoxingChampionships held on 7 June.

Sinethemba Blom and Nwabisa Tom bothreceived gold medals, while their teammateSandiso Kota had to settle for bronze afterhe was beaten in the semi-final.

Blom and Tom will travel to East Londonnext month for the national championships, with a goal of getting a place on the SouthAfrican team that will go to the World Box-ing Championships.

OutclassedAt a packed Vuyiseka Community Hall in

Philippi on 7 June, Blom outclassed LungaStemela in what was named the Bout of theTournament to win the light welterweightdivision, while Tomwent through on awalk-over after she didn’t get an opponent in thelight middleweight division.

It was the third time that Blom, a secondyear BA student, beat Stemela in as manybouts this year, and said he was very happy

about the win as he had trained hard for thetournament.

The bigger picture for him nowwas a goldmedal at the national championships, some-thing that has eluded him in the past.

“I’ve always lost in the semi-finals orquar-terfinals, but this year I want to go all theway,” an ecstatic Blom commented.

NervousTom, who is graduating with a BCom in

September, said shewas happy to qualify forthe national championships, but was ner-vous because of going to the national eventwithout fighting.

Drivers skid around inthe wet at KillarneyADRIAN PHEIFER

Killarney hosted the fourth round of the Po-wer Series this past Saturday. Themorningstarted off with a dry track but this quicklychanged as the morning progressed. This resulted in many upsets during the

early morning qualifying sessions. By thetime the first race started the trackwaswet. However, this was only the start of the rainto come.TheMakita Supercars were the first race

of the day and they put on a great show inthe tricky conditions.Despite the damp, Nick Adcock and Brad

Wadely were in great form as they finishedin that order almost side by side. The Silverclass belonged toGarthEasomwhile StuartSpooner took top honours in the Bronzeclass. Then the heavens really opened up as the

Charl Eng. Fine Cars took to the grid. Thefirst laps resulted in the red flags being pul-led out after Dereck Jordaan (Ford XR6)andMaurice Tascano (VWPassat) had a co-ming together. The race was restarted after the debris

was cleared, and victory then went to Ericvan der Merwe (Porsche 944 Turbo) fromRay Cooper (Escort GT) and Piet Matthee(Porsche 944).Then theMidasClubmans serieswas also

action packedwith a full field of almost fiftycars taking to the grid. Danie van Niekerk

drove a spectacular race, taking his Turbocharged BMW from the back of the grid allthe way to the front and finally taking firstposition, he was closely followed by a packof front wheel drive cars, included ErnestLiete (VWCaddy) who qualified in 22nd po-sition. However, by the end of the race Er-nie secured second position overall andfirst in his class.Class winners included Michael le Sueur

(class D, VW Golf), Eric Nel (class E, VWFox), and Wayne Kraukamp (class F, Toyo-ta Tazz), who took advantage of the slipperconditions to take third, fourth and fifthoverall.Coping with the power of the V8 Masters

cars on the equivalent of an ice rink wasobviously going to be a problem.Despite that, a justifiably cautious Favio

Tafani was able to remain ahead of MarcelAngel, Stephan Young and Charles Arton, who were the only other finishers. The Jive GTi challenge began with the

water across the track making waves thatrivalled the surf at Big Bay, and cars wentoff in all directions.Well done to Nian du Toit and Stiaan

Kriel for surfing in the right directionwhileon theirway to finish first and second. Let’snot forget Kosie Weyers, Jonathan Aber-dien and Ebrahiem Levy, who all deservespecial mention .Eighteen-year-old Aberdien did well to

claim top honours in class B.

The success of the five-weekBrutal FruitNetball Cup will be put to the test thisweek when the SPAR national netball

team play a three-test series against Scot-land in Cape Town. The tests will be played at the Velodrome

in Bellville on consecutive days, between 19and 21 June.“It is a very opportune time for us to play

this series,” saidNetball SouthAfrica (NSA)President Mimi Mthethwa.“We have just finished the Brutal Fruit

Netball Cup, and this series gives us a chan-ce to see how the players have progressed. Also, with the Commonwealth Games inGlasgow in July - our big focus for this year- we will be able to try out the team and see

howprepared the players are for the challen-ge ahead of them.”There are three new caps in the squad an-

nounced after the Brutal Fruit Netball Cupfinal on Sunday.“The Scotland series is an ideal opportuni-

ty to expose young players to internationalnetball,” said head coach of the SPAR natio-nal team, Elize Kotze.

Amazing reach“Lenise Potgieter is a very talented young

player. She’s only 20, but she showed a greatmaturity during the Brutal Fruit NetballCup, standing up against experienced defen-ders like KarlaMostert and Adele Niemand. She has an amazing reach, and she plays ve-

ry much like Irene van Dyk,” said Kotze.“The other two newcomers are both defen-

ders, Kefiloe “Fifi” Tsotetsi andPhumzaMa-weni. Phumza was outstanding for the Sout-hern Stings, who won all their matches, andwhat I love about Fifi is that she trains everyday against Chante Steyn at the NorthernFlames, and that will help us when we meetthose huge Jamaicans at the Commonwe-alth Games.”Steyn, at 195 centimetres, was one of the

tallest and most solid players in the BrutalFruit Netball Cup.The team to play against Scotland will to

a large extent be the team thatwill representSouth Africa at the Commonwealth Games.Scotland are ranked 13th by the Internati-

onal Netball Federation, while South Africaare ranked sixth.

Commonwealth groupingsThe two teams are in different pools at the

Commonwealth Games, with Scotland co-ming up against New Zealand, Jamaica, Ma-lawi, Northern Ireland and St Lucia, whileSouth Africa are grouped with Australia,England, Wales, Trinidad and Tobago, Bar-bados.“If wewin all three Tests against Scotland,

we will move up to fifth in the world ran-kings,” said Kotze.Tickets for the Scotland series are availa-

ble at the Velodrome. They cost R20, and R10for children under 13.
