10t truck nomatch for her

LEON STEENKAMP

Pulling a 10 tonne truck provedto be a mere entree for a localstrongwoman who has set hersights on devouring an even big-ger challenge.

Only three weeks after officiallydipping her toes into the waters ofstrongwoman competition, LieslSchoonraad (40), will hope to pull aplane.

Schoonraad attempted the massi-ve truck pull at Ratanga Junctionon Saturday to create awarenessaround Cerebral Palsy (CP) and toadvocate the benefits of exercise tothe youth.

After quickly strapping on theharness, Schoonraad caught someonlookers by surprise as she set off– pulling the truckat ablisteringpa-ce.

“To be honest the 10 tonneswasn’t much of a challenge. I wasbusy getting into position when Ifelt the truck come,” she said.

Pulling the truck for 34,30 metreshowever wasn’t light work.

“It’s never easy,” the out of bre-ath mother of two said in responseto presenter Kevin Abbott’s com-ment that she made it look easy.

Schoonraad started training forthis event just over seven monthsago.

“It’s been a long, hard struggle inthe gym, but it has been worth it,”said Schoonraad, whose record for

leg presses currently stands at640kg.

“I am so overwhelmed with thesupport I received,” she said.

She singled out her training part-ner and former South AfricanStrongman Ettienne Uys for hishelp in achieving her goal.

“I would have been flat on my faceand in traction in hospital if not forEttienne. There is a special techni-que involved and you can really in-jure yourself if you don’t do it thecorrect way,” she explained.

Also supporting her from the si-delines was Ryan McConnachie, agood friend and CP sufferer who in-spired Schoonraad’s awarenesscampaign.

“It means so much to me to see thestrength and power she has.

“Liesl you are awesome,” McCon-nachie said afterwards.

Schoonraad is not yet sure exac-tly what kind of aircraft she will bepulling in three weeks’ time as partof the Wings and Wheels Show thatwill be held at Ysterplaat Air ForceBase on 9 and 10 December.

“I am meeting with the guys fromYsterplaat on today for a photoshoot and will then test a couple ofplanes,” a very excited Schoonraadsaid on Monday.

“As far as I know this will be afirst both in South Africa and theworld,” she said, adding that shewould look at sinking her teeth intonothing less that 15 tonnes of ma-chinery.

Gruelling swim for cancer opA local swimmer is one of nine noviceopen-water swimmers who will take tothe icy Atlantic to tackle a gruelling dou-ble crossing between Bloubergstrandand Robben Island in a bid to raise fundsfor an 11-year-old girl with cancer.

The second annual Turbo Swim of Cour-age, brainchild of swimmer and fundraiser,Martin Goodman, will this year support Na-talie’s Circle of Love, a fundraising cam-paign for the medical treatment of Capeto-nian, Natalie Cohen, who suffers from chor-doma, an aggressive and rare form of bonecancer.

Following on the success of last year’sSwim of Courage – a Robben Island to ThreeAnchor Bay crossing which raised funds forbrain tumour survivor Cameron Els – organ-iser Goodman announced plans for an evenmore challenging open water swim whichwill take place sometime at the end of No-vember, weather dependant.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity

to contribute towards Natalie’s Circle ofLove campaign. The opportunity to helpsomeoneandknowthat our effortswillmakea serious difference in someone’s life, iswhat drives us,” said Goodman of his swim-ming team.

His team includes Table View resident To-ni Enderli, co-founder of The Ripple Effect,an organisation that also raises fundsthrough sport.

Natalie, a Grade 5 Camps Bay Primaryscholar, was diagnosed with the disease inJanuary this year. She underwent emergen-cy surgery to have part of the tumour, whichwas attached to her windpipe, removed. Thegiant tumour had however grown into herspine and doctors were unable to remove itcompletely without causing damage to herspinal cord and possible paralysis. Aftermuch research, she was referred to a special-ist team of surgeons and oncologists at Mas-sachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

The team, using state of theart technology, successfully removed the tumour in one

piece, but to do so, part of her spine had tobe removed too.

Reconstruction of her spinal cord usingbone taken from her right leg completed thegroundbreaking surgery. Natalie will nowwear a halo for three months which will holdher body together while the bone fuses andwill then receive proton beam radiation toensure that no part of the tumour is left be-hind.

The cost of Natalie’s surgery, togetherwith post operative treatment and protontherapy amounts to $250 000 (aboutR1 970 000).

“We hope that South Africans will get be-hind this fantastic fundraising drive. Thisyear’s event will be bigger. On the day of theswim we will also appreciate the public’ssupport at the beach.”

More information about Natalie is availa-ble atwww.nataliecircleoflove.org. For moreinformation on the swim, contact MartinGoodman on 082 825 2211 or visit the Swimof Courage Facebook page.

‘Famous’ recipeAn enthusiastic cook from Milner-ton Ridge is among a selected fewwhose recipe can be found in a po-pular food magazine.

The Woolworths’ magazine Tastehas produced its first ever readers’issue (on sale now), which is madeup of recipes submitted by the rea-ders. The best ones were chosen andpublished in the magazine.

Nicole Lear was among thosewhose culinary know-how was ac-knowledged by being featured inthe magazine.

Her recipe isn’t too complicatedand, most importantly, truly delec-table. “It is something I came upwith. They tweaked it a little but itis an original recipe,” said Learwho studied cooking.

“Cooking is a passion, that andbaking,” she said with a smile.

Why healthcare costs so muchMany years ago, as a young reporter, I cov-ered a meeting of the Medical and DentalCouncil.

I remember it well for at that meeting Iobserved an important stage in the declineof medical ethics. The layman on the coun-cil proposed a motion to bar doctors frombuying shares in drug companies. The ar-gument was that doctors should choose themost appropriate drug for the patient andnot the one that best served his share port-folio.

The doctors dismissed his concerns andthe motion was lost. That was the thin endof the wedge.

Since then there have been all sorts ofincentive schemes to encourage doctors toprescribe particular drugs. Naturally doc-torswill say theyarenot influencedbut thefact is that the schemes exist because theywork.

Now, of course, it’s about prescribing ex-pensive operations in five-star hospitalsand, as far as I know, there is nothing tostop doctors buying shares in a particularhospital group. This is the thick end of thewedge.

But, by and large, doctors are not theproblem. The real villains are the account-

ants and the actuaries who have led themedical men and women astray, exploitedthem and turned medicine into a businessthat puts profits before health.

Let me give you a small ex-ample. A doctor friend ofmine used to do locum workin the casualty departmentof one of the better knownprivate hospitals. He was aconservative doctor and theadministrators soon noticedthat when he was on duty thehospital pharmacy did lessbusiness. It was suggestedthat he should write moreprescriptions. When he de-clined they found a morecompliant doctor.

The biggest problem, how-ever, are the financial servic-es companies that masquerade as medicalaid schemes. Let me give you another ex-ample. If you are a private patient you canhave a cataract operation done for aboutR10 000 an eye in an excellent clinic, butif you are on medical aid most of the firmswill insist that the surgeon does the opera-tion in a private hospital. That will add an-

other R10 000 to the bill.So we have a situation where the cost of

treatment is being deliberately forced up.That results in a higher turnover and that,

in turn, justifies higher pre-miums. The more expensivehealthcare becomes themore money the medical aidschemes make.

Of course the private hos-pitals do provide an excel-lent service but so theyshould. Over the years theyhave poached the best staffand this has helped to under-mine the provincial hospi-tals.

George Bernard Shaw gotit right more than a centuryago when he said the prob-lem with medicine was that

the doctor who was about to amputate yourleg and earn 100 guineas for doing so wasalso the person who decided whether theleg needed amputation. That, said Shaw, was like making the hangman the judgeand paying him per hanging. Nothing haschanged except it’s not about amputationany more but R100 000 hip replacements.

Abbey on a mission to save our oceansLEON STEENKAMP

A cute story book character will betravelling around the world to spreadthe important message of saving ourstruggling seas.

Sunningdale resident and marine biolo-gist Heidi de Maine is the author of the Ab-by’s Aquarium Adventures series.

These books, which were listed amongthe Top 10 South African Children’s Bookslast year, feature the main character Ab-by.

Abby is an aquarist at an aquarium whoteaches children about marine life, life inan aquarium, and informs them about ani-mal/marine careers as well as conserva-tion.

Says De Maine: “Through the book se-ries, marine-related craft kits that I make,Facebook, articles in magazines, talks/presentations and my blog I hope to makeAbby a well-known marine ambassador.”

Along with teaching children about ma-rine life, De Maine hopes to promote a ca-reer in the area of marine biology amongchildren.

To show children the career options outthere, De Maine is sending Abby aroundthe world to visit different aquariums and

research facilities.“She will learn about their special

projects and see day-to-day life in aquari-ums. Abby will get to meet researchers, teachers, field staff and anyone and every-one related to marine life,” De Maine ex-plained.

Abby (a soft toy) will visit each facilityfor a period of time, ranging from one dayup to two months, depending on the cir-cumstances – deep sea research vesselsand sailing expeditions need her to staywith them for longer.

“At each facility, she will be shownaround and she’ll get to see what the peo-ple’s job entails, she’ll take photos andthen write up her travelogue on her blogwww.abby.co.za,” De Maine said.

The miniature explorer has alreadybeen invited to 43 facilities around theworld, from Canada to New Zealand.

“When she comes back to South Africa, she’ll do the rounds here too.”

Abby’s first adventure is a trip by postto Alaska where she will find out moreabout ocean acidification.

“We just hope that the local postal serv-ice doesn’t lose Abbey en route,” De Mainesaid, but quickly added that shehasaback-up Abbey should things take a turn for theworst.

Stand anddeliver! In answer to my question, “What’s the dif-ference between good old fashioned high-way robbery and the proposed new tollroads?”

I was pleased to receive replies from thedepartment of labour, the minister of po-lice and minister of justice explaining tome that it was all a part of the govern-ment’s job creation scheme.

Apparently, the unemployment rate forhighway robbers is much higher than thenational average in other robbery profes-sions.

Except for the occasional car hi-jacking,it was felt that this part of the robbery in-dustry needed to be jacked-up (pardon thepun) as highway robbery has been insteady decline since the boom days of DickTurpin & Co.

Whenever I am held up by a toll roadoperative, they ask me to please pay up,shut up and accept this slight impositionwith good grace. Seeing as Sanral has toldme that I have no choice in the matter any-how, I might as well accept this unneces-sary and costly irritation as calmly as Ican and try not to look them in the eye asthey are robbing me.

Graffiti vandals’days are numberedUnder a Cape Town City by-law passed in2010, graffiti is illegal and can be reported tothe Law Enforcement Anti-Graffiti Unit on0800 222 771.

The onus for cleaning the graffiti unfortu-nately rests with the property owner and ifnot cleaned off by them the City can organisethe cleanup and bill the property owner ac-cordingly.

As one of our projects to assist in fightingpetty crime, the Community Police Forum(CPF) in Parklands has decided to follow Ru-di Giuliani’s broken window approach anderadicate graffiti from our sector.

Volunteers have started with the cleanupof road signs, electricity boxes and small in-cidents of graffiti where possible, as well as

assisting property owners with larger occur-rences.

May I appeal to parents, teachers andschool principals to please assist us by in-forming children that graffiti is not cool butrather the malicious damage of other peo-ple’s property.

To those brainless adults who, like dogslifting their legs on every second lamp pole, continue to perpetrate this mindless prac-tice; people known as Gems, Dope, Jeb,Demo, One, Epo, Tekkies, Billy G and othersyou have caused thousands of rands of dam-age to the property of others and when wecatch you it will be your turn to pay!

Beware of this road scamTuesday (15 November) at 13:30 I was drivingin Bellville on Durban Road in the directionof the N1 highway.

At a red robot, while waiting for the robotsto turn green, the driver of the vehicle be-hind me (a white commercial van with oran-ge adverts across the top) got out of his carand approached my window saying that Ihad petrol leaking from the back of my car.

When the robot turned green I found a safeplace to pull over (at the bus stop still in Dur-ban Road) and he pulled behind me on thatbusy road, like a Good Samaritan who wasassisting me out of a fix.

I got out of my car and he inspected undermy car and announced that there was a defi-nite leak and that he would help me, quicklysignalling that I should follow him.

When we both got into our respective cars,he overtook me and turned immediately leftat the approaching intersection assuming

that I would follow him. I ignored this stran-ger and proceeded straight.

I went to the nearest petrol station andasked the petrol attendant to assist me in de-termining if I had a fuel leak under my carpointing at the exact location where the con-cerned driver had pointed.

Two petrol attendants checked the bottomof my car and there were no leaks. This conartist was white, sounded Afrikaans and inmid-twenties.

This is a scam aimed at misleading womentravelling on their own. Had I accepted hisassistance, he probably would have dispos-sessed me of my vehicle, stolen my bag andjewellery and most likely harmed me.

It all happened very quickly!Women drivers on their own are soft tar-

gets and need to beware of this latest scam!IDALIA ASHBYEmail

No time forrecyclingI had four black bags full of 1,5 litre clearplastic flavoured water bottles to recycle, all rinsed and clean.

At Pick n Pay there were only contain-ers for glass and paper!

I went behind Bayside where there wereonly a few refuse bins which were half fullof a mixture of plastic items.

When I added my load, they were over-flowing.

This trip involved negotiating no fewerthan six booms!

To hell with recycling! My time is toovaluable.

As the Bloubergrant area has no plan inplace for street collection, everything willsimply go into my black bin and add to thelandfill! Disappointing.

Black Tuesdayfor SA?Nelson Mandela once said, “A critical, in-dependent and investigative press is the li-feblood of any democracy. The press mustbe free from state interference. It must ha-ve the economic strength to stand up to theblandishments of government officials.”

Almost 18 years after South Africa sho-wed the world that a peaceful transitionin government is attainable; we now facethe distinct possibility of sliding back intoobscurity, if the Protection of InformationBill is passed in parliament.

The health of a democracy is often meas-ured by restrictions on media.

The days of rotting in jail for upholdingone of our most basic rights – the right toknow – could become a reality once again.

Since 1994, information deemed to be inthepublic interestwerepublishedwithoutfear of persecution. Countless examples ofthis freedom permeated the press and con-tributed to numerous restless nights forthose corrupted by power. Now we are atthe crossroads. The significance of thisbill cannot be overemphasised. A freepress has played an invaluable role inbringing “untouchable” citizens to justice– Shabir Shaik, Jackie Selebi, Bheki Cele,Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde.

When sensitive information was leakedin the Apartheid years, the informant andthe journalist or editor could well end upin jail, yet despite this restriction, somecontinued to defy this evil.

In that period the country was rocked bya major political scandal involving the de-partment of information, which was alle-gedly misappropriating State funds for se-cret projects.

A taste of freedom has left us yearningfor more. Or in Madiba’s words, “Let free-dom reign. The sun never set on so glori-ous a human achievement.”

Putting smiles on little facesMARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Thirty four children with cleft lips andpalates have just received the gift of smil-ing. They underwent life-changing facialreconstructive surgery from 14 tot 18 No-vember at Tygerberg Hospital as part of“Smile Week”.

The hospital, Vodacom and the Smile Foun-dation joined forces to make this initiativepossible. Smile Foundation is an NGO thatdoes facial reconstructive surgery free ofcharge for children from disadvantaged back-grounds with facial conditions. Through itspartnership with academic hospitals in thecountry, Smile Foundation has helped about800 children to date.

Not only children with cleft lips and pal-ates, but also children with ear conditions, some cranio-facial conditions, and burnwounds were operated on.

On Tuesday 15 November, Western CapePremier Helen Zille met the children who hadsurgery, as well as their parents. She wasjoined by Western Cape Minister of HealthTheuns Botha.

In her keynote address, Zille said the workdone by the Smile Foundation and Vodacomis a great example of how the private sectorcan assist government in delivering qualityhealthcare to citizens.

“Around 80 percent of the health budget isspent on diseases and injuries that are pre-ventable and often a consequence of life-stylechoices. This means we do not have enoughmoney to provide care and assistance to peo-

ple living with disabilities.“The value that Smile Week will bring to

the lives of these children, who will be giventhe opportunity of a future with a higher self-esteem, a sense of dignity and most impor-tantly, full and joyous smiles, is truly im-measurable,” she said.

Botha added to this, saying: “I am so proudof this partnership where our hospital staff, specialists and nurses are joining hands withVodacom towards a future generation ofsmiles.

“This is a project that cannot be bought

with rands and cents but is borne out of com-passion and goodwill.”

Moira Gerszt, chief operating officer of theSmile Foundation, says there is no betterChristmas present than a life-changing smile.“We are very excited that, through this part-nership, we will be able to share smiles withthe children of the Western Cape.”

Through the Smile Foundation’s goodwork, backlogs in academic hospitals are alle-viated, skills transfer is facilitated, as well aspsychological help offered before and aftersurgery, supporting hospital infrastructure.

Premier Helen Zille talks to Portia Riezenberg whose baby Chloe (9 months) was operated on,on Monday 14 November to fix her cleft lip. They are from Parow.

Schools already at full capacityWith only three weeks left beforethe end of the school year, schools in Brackenfell, Durban-ville, Delft and Kuils River arefull to capacity.

The Western Cape Education De-partment is wrapping up its prepa-rations for the 2012 school year, which includes the finalisation ofenrolments.

Says Bronagh Casey, spokesper-son for education minister DonaldGrant: “The completion of enrol-ments for the following school yearis imperative, as this determines

the number of staff that will be allo-cated to the particular school, theamount of furniture and stationeryrequired and the number of learn-ing materials such as textbooks.”

According to her, this year’s ear-ly enrolment campaign has been asuccess, with high enrolment fig-ures being captured throughout theprovince.

“The greatest demand for enrol-ment has been in the metro region, with some areas reporting that theyare full to capacity,” she says.

While enrolment has been high inthe Eden/Karoo, Overberg and

West Coast districts, there is stillcapacity in some of the schools.

“We are expecting around 100 000learners to qualify for enrolment inGrade 1 next year, and approxi-mately 80 000 in Grade 8.”

Bronagh says the departmentdoes expect some late enrolmentsnext year, especially involvinglearners that have migrated fromother provinces or have enrolledlate for practical reasons, such asfamily relocation.

“We have identified areas wherethere might be high levels of de-mand. These include Mitchells

Plain, Nyanga, Phillipi, Delft, KuilsRiver, Langa, Hanover Park,Manenberg and Oudtshoorn,” shesays.

According to Bronagh there arestill parents in the province whohave children entering Grade 1 orGrade 8, but who have not yet en-rolled them for 2012 . “I stronglyurge them to do so now ... enrolmentat this stage may require some as-sistance by the WCED district offic-es.

“Parents must not leave enrol-ment to the first day of the newschool year. This places a massive

amount of pressure on our officialsand distracts our schools from theirtask at hand – which is an on-timestart to teaching and learning. It issimply unfair for parents who havefailed in their responsibility to en-rol their children ingood time to laythe blame on the department and itsofficials at the start of the newschool year.”

Parents need to provide the follo-wing documents when submittingtheir applications: birth certificate;immunisation card; transfer cardor the last report card for learnerswho have already been to school.

Spectra asks for high tech goodsThe Spectra Foundation is nowstarting with a new project to helpunemployed people and those inneed by training them to start theirown business.

For this purpose a few used lap-tops or computers and one or twoprojectors are needed.

“If anyone of our caring commu-nity members knows where to ac-quire, ready to be discarded, butstill in working order, laptops orcomputers, it would be greatly ap-preciated if you could contact us.

“We are already up and runningwith this project, but are short ofthis most necessary equipment,”said Val Young, founder director ofthe Spectra Foundation.

The foundation is also appealingto people not to throw out their un-wanted clothes, linen, shoes, bric-a-brac, food or anything else whichcan still be used, but to donate it tothe foundation.

“Anything discarded by you isworth gold to someone else,” Youngsaid.

“The foundation has been verybusy this year due to the extremecold and financial conditions. Withthe Festive season approaching, many people just see it as anotherday without even basic necessi-ties.”

The demand is growing enor-mously every year and has certain-ly worsened this year, Young said.

“We have for the last few yearsbeen very reliant on caring mem-bers of the public to empty theircupboards of unwanted goods tomake life more bearable for theseunderprivileged people, especiallythose exposed to the elements everynight.

“Among those whom we try to as-sist are people infected/affected byHIV/Aids, as well as families wherethere is drug and alcohol abuse. Insome cases children have to go hun-gry as a result of their parents hav-ing fallen victim to these evils,”Young said.

Contact Val Young on 084 033 6741with enquiries or collection of useditems.

Facelift inFactreton

LYNNE MATTHYSEN

More than 156 backyard units in Factretonare set to get a facelift thanks to the City’sbackyarder upgrade project.

The project was launched by the executivemayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille lastweek Wednesday.

The units in Factreton will get enclosedflush toilets and upgraded electricity infra-structure once renovations get under waymid-2012.

This pilot project was approved in lateSeptember, and according to the City, les-sons learnt in Factreton will influence theexpansion of this project to Langa and Hano-ver Park.

“Currently, the housing waiting list inCape Town sits at around 400 000 house-holds, and due to the pressures of numbersand limited resources, housing delivery hasbeen slow,” said De Lille.

“This programme is the first of its kind inthe country, and has involved consultationwith all stakeholders, including City offi-cials, representatives from all backyardercommunities across the metro, and land-lords. The units provide access to clean wa-ter, washing facilities and electricity.”

According to De Lille, the City will contin-ue to conduct engineering surveys of back-yarder communities over the next fiveyears, in order to assess the scale of servicesneeded in each community.

Cup proposal in NZLEON STEENKAMP

A wedding proposal was the cherry ontop for a local couple who won a trip towatch the Rugby World Cup live in NewZealand.

Gillian Castle from Flamingo Vlei wasoverjoyed when she heard she had won theHeineken competition.

“I decided to take my boyfriend of twoyears, Marius Scott, with me,” said Castlewho works as a wardrobe supervisor.

Although not as fierce a rugby supporterasGillian, Scottwas evenmore excitedaboutthe trip as he was planning something spe-cial.

“With Gillian’s help I have become a rugbyfan, but she is the one that jumps on thecouch and cheers on the guys.

“I was planning on proposing to her in De-cember but when we won this competitionit was the ideal opportunity,” Scott said ofhis plans to pop the big question on WaihekeIsland.

He bought the ring a couple of weeks be-fore their departure and hid it in his toolboxin the garage knowing it is the last place thathis fiancée-to-be would snoop around.

“The garage is off limits for her,” he saidlaughing.

The couple was part of a tour group of 25people.

Castle recalls the special day in great de-tail.

“Tuesday 18 October started out withbreakfast at the hotel and then a bus tripdown to the port for a helicopter trip toWaiheke Island which was just spectacular,”she said.

When the group arrived on the island theyboarded a bus for a guided trip.

“The island is peaceful, lush and quaintand it appears that time hasn’t passed theresince the 70s,” Castle said. The first stop-offwas at Stonebridge for some wine tasting, followed by a visit to Wild on Waiheke forbeer tastings.

“After this we were split into two teamsfor some archery and laser pigeon shootingwhich we managed to do in between down-pours.

“Our team ended up having homemadegingerbeer and rum to keep the chills awaybut proved to make shooting a little morechallenging! After our scores were talliedour team had lost. I blame it on the deliciousrum,” Castle says with a smile.

The group then moved on to MudbrickVineyard, a wine farm situated on top of ahill with amazing panoramic views of the

vineyard, the island and Auckland.“Tony our local guide told us that just six

months before he had got married there,”Castle said.

Because of the rain, the group wentstraight into the restaurant and sat downwhere Castle spent the next 30 minutes chat-ting to Tony about the details of his weddingday.

“I was so engrossed in Tony’s story, thatI hadn’t noticed that Marius had been gonefor a while,” she says.

Tony was supposed to get married on theroof deck of the restaurant but had to moveit to the cellar because of the rain.

“I was looking for a nice spot to proposeand at Mudbrick there are so many, but theview from the deck above the restaurant wasperfect,” he said.

When Scott went inside and told his girl-friend that the rain had stopped and that hewanted to show her something, she didn’tsuspect a thing.

As she was getting up one of their tourfriends jokingly asked whether Scott was go-ing to propose.

“I went a bit cold, when Rob said that, butI kept my cool,” Scott said adding that lucki-ly Castle remained in the dark.

“I made a point of not telling anyone in thetour group fearing that they might let some-thing slip,” he said.

“I was completely unaware of Marius’s in-tentions or of how nervous he was. I was toobusy jabbering on about Tony’s stories of hiswedding,” Castle said.

“He took me onto the roof deck of the res-taurant which I thought was to show me theviews fromup there.Whilewewere standingthere arm in arm and taking it all in he sud-denly stood in front of me, took my hand andwent down on one knee and said: ‘GillianCastle, will you do me the honour of marry-ing me?’”

She was so surprised she started giggling.“Of course I said yes, but at first I giggled

at the sound of him using my full name butalso from the surprise and nervousness.”

Scott admits therewasanawkward secondor two.

“There I am down on one knee, very emoti-onal, tears in my eyes and she is laughingat me,” he said laughing in fake disgust. “Butwhen she realised what was going on, it wasall good.”

The couple broke the news to the rest ofthe group and were showered with congratu-lations with plenty of photos taken.

Hierdie towerbestanddeel is filodeeg.

The Arch spreads cheerChristmascameearly for22childrenat Tygerberg Children’s Hospitalwhen Archbishop Desmond Tutu ar-rived to hand out presents.

Tutu’s laughter rippled down the cor-ridors as he made his way to the chil-dren, who were eagerly awaiting him.

“While they are not well, they are stilljoyous,” said Tutu, who together withhis daughter, Mpho, handed outpresents to each child.

“We have come here to spread a bitof joy, but we’ve got so much in return,”he added.

Ten-year-old Lorenzo Jansen thankedthe Archbishop for the visit and thenasked if he could touch his face. Lorenzobecame blind after developing a braintumour at the age of five.

Tutu was clearly moved by hiswarmth and laughter, saying he had “afantastic spirit”.

TheArchbishopEmeritus also laudedTygerberg Children’s Hospital, callingit “a wonderful institution” and said itwas wonderful that mothers were al-lowed to stay with their children whilethey were in hospital.

“I was in hospital when I was threeyears old after a burn wound. It wastraumatic being alone at such a youngage. Here the children feel that someoneis with them. It reduces the trauma andincreases their chances of getting bet-ter.”

Tygerberg Children’s Hospital com-munications officer, Laticia Pienaar, said the visit had been a real boost forthe children.

“The Archbishop brings so much en-ergy with him and has a passion for giv-ing to others.”

The presents were given to Tutu inhonour of his 80th birthday. He hadasked that instead of giving him gifts, they should earmark them for variouscauses, including the children at the Ty-gerberg Children’s Hospital, of whichhe is Patron.

ADT says ‘be safe’ADT Security recently held atalk for CBC St John’s School toteach the pupils the importanceof staying safe.

The talk took place as an interac-tive entertainment show, with ADTmascot Mr ADT giving the advice.

The show touches on current is-sues that many children face athome, school or in the outsideworld.

This included learning the dan-gers of firearms and what to do inthe event of an emergency.

Lessons learnt during the talk in-cluded:

. Not all strangers are criminals, but it is not possible to tell simply

by someone’s appearance, so be vig-ilant and report behaviour thatmakes you uncomfortable.

. Firearms, knives and otherweapons are not toys and should on-ly be handled by adults when notlocked away in a safe.

. It does not matter how smallyou are, you can act to save lives inan emergency such as a car hijack-ing or home invasion.

. Becarefulwhenyouarearoundother people’s dogs or pets, if theydo not know you or if you teasethem, they could bite.

. Always know who you shouldgo to in an emergency and memo-rise contact numbers for the policeand emergency services.

Learners of CBC St John’s School with Mr ADT, the security company’s mascot, and Darin the Magician.

Dumping costs City moneyIllegal dumping is a costly exercise.

So says Clive Justus, chairpersonof Subcouncil 4, who urged resi-dents during the subcouncil meet-ing in Parow last week to report ille-gal dumping.

“The solid waste management de-partment has reaffirmed its com-mitment to keeping Cape Town’sbuilt and natural environmentclear of waste,” he said.

According to Justus, last monthalone the department issued finesamounting to almost R100 000 – the

majority of which were for the ille-gal dumping of builders’ rubble andtyres. Some of the fines issued wereas high as R2 500.

Cleaning up illegal dumping isvery costly, he said.

“A clean environment is an in-vestment in the future and it clearlycontributes to our quality of life. Itherefore make an earnest appeal toall residents to be vigilant and re-port all instances of illegal dump-ing. Please provide details such asthe vehicle registration numbers

and the date, time and place oftransgressions.

“This enables the City to issuefines and compel the transgressorsto remove the dumped waste,” hesaid.

. Residents can report details ofdumped material and requestdumped material to be removed bycalling theCity’s customer care lineon 0860 103 089 or 021 400 6157 dur-ing office hours or send a fax to021 400 4302 or send an email [email protected].

LOUISA STEYL

They consider themselvesfree thinkers, but it’stheir whimsical quirki-ness and simple honestythat makes Since Freevery different to the cur-rent norm.

Bellville band, SinceFree, is made up of Ronélvan Lingen and GershanLombard.

Although the pair metfour years ago, through mu-tual friends, they only start-ed performing together ear-lier this year,

Ronél explains that shewas approached to put to-getheramusical and startedjamming with Gershan forideas. The two started writ-ing together and as she says:“The songs were actuallyawesome.”

They now gig at least onceor twice a week and practise regu-larly between writing new songs.

When asked about their name,Gershan says: “We had quite astruggle to get something. It’s amindset thing,” he says, addingthat they see themselves as freethinkers.

“We consider ourselves to be onthe path of enlightenment,” Ronélsays. “Since we started the bandwe have been free to make the mu-sic we want to,” she says.

Both Ronél and Gershan creditacoustic rock, acoustic folk, bluesand indie as the influences behindtheir music. They describe theirown music as “melodic, acoustic, alternative, rock”.

Ronél explains their writingprocess, saying that Gershanwrites themusic. “I conjureup themelody and lyrics,” she says. Thetwo write in English and Afri-kaans. “It depends which lan-guage the song speaks to me in,”Ronél points out.

“We try to keep as positive andopen as possible,” Gershan says ofSince Free’s lyrics. “We acknowl-edge the not so positive side of life, butmostlywe try to enlightenpeo-

ple,” Ronél adds.Gershan says it’s important for

them to make their music mean-ingful. “It’s accessible without be-ing commercial,” he points out.

Ronél, who has been writingsince she was just nine, explainsthat she writes songs about herfeelings and how she imaginesothers to be feeling.

“I’m an emotional writer,” shestates.

Since Free recently recordedtheir first single, “Cherry Blos-som Woman”, which has seen pos-itive feedback from Taxi Radioand Zone Radio, where they havealso already been interviewed onair.

The band’s plan now is to usemoney made at gigs to record anEP. They hope to make their mu-sic freely available and makemoney from festivals and shows.

Since Free will be performingon Wednesday 7 December at Al-ma Café and on Monday 19 Decem-ber at the Barleycorn Club.

Spanne verloorondanks 100’sSAREL BURGER

Team strategy pays off at finishLEON STEENKAMP

There wasn’t much room for movementbut the strategy of the Brothers Sport/Focus team paid off giving them the topspot in this year’s Tiletoria West CoastExpress Cycle Race.

Leonardo van Onselen managed to crossthe finish line a split second before MatthewWentworth in the sprint to the finish duringthe men’s Elite category in the 85km race.

“We were out of here quite fast, with thespeed fairly high,” Van Onselen said afterthe race.

The riders remained bunched as theypeddled down the R27.

Just after the Atlantis turn-off three riderslaunched a break-away attempt.

“About 10 kilometres later we caught upwith them again. The wind wasn’t much ofa factor this year. The wind we had, was atour backs during the last 30km of the racewhich helped. The light rain we had close toAtlantis played a bigger role,” Van Onselensaid.

Soon thereafter other riders broke awayfrom the bunch, among them Van Onselen’steam mate Riaan Kemp.

“About 10km before the finish we caughtup with them again,” said Van Onselen ad-ding that this flat race makes breaking awayfrom the bunch very difficult.

“When we caught up to the front riders wetried to retain control of the group of some30 riders. We did this by having someonefrom our team regularly launching breaka-ways. This helped in keeping the speed fast.”

In the end it was team mates Kemp andChris Esch who paved the way for Van Onse-len’s sprint to the finish.

It is not the first time that the rider fromStellenbosch scales to the top spot on the po-dium. Apart from his success in this – theeighth instalment of the race – Van Onselenalso tasted victory in 2004.

The race and funride saw a total numberof some 1 300 entries. There were two inci-dents on the route where cyclists fell. Onecyclist was taken to hospital to receive stit-ches in his calf, but was back in time to enjoythe festivities at the prizegiving.

“We had a very good turnout, consideringthe weather and I believe it is because of thegood prizes and because the people knowthat the money goes to a non profit organisa-tion,” said Mike de Kock of Tiletoria whohelped organise the race.

Leonardo van Onselen (right) won the Elite men’s category in the 85km Tiletoria West Expressthat took place in Bloubergstrand on Sunday. He was aided by his team mates (from left) RyanKemp, Chris Esch and MC Dreyer. Photo: Leon Steenkamp
