Come wind, rain or snow, the peopleliving in Richmond Park must move

to Wolwerivier.They have been left with no alternative.It seemsas if, forR6 500 per family, the aut-

horities have ‘bought’ the basic residentialrights of the Richmond Park residents.Around 26 families have arrived atWolwe-

rivier, an interim site which currently hasno electricity, water supply, sewage, refusecollection, transport, creches, schools, jobs,shops, clinics, social welfare services or se-curity services.They were told that they would be R6 500

richer if they cooperated.

In March this year, the City of Cape Townrevealed that they plan to spend over R1 bil-lion on developing the Richmond Park area.Mayoral committee member for human

settlements, Tandeka Gqada, said at the ti-me: “The families will have access to betterservices, such as water, sanitation, and elec-tricity.“Each family will also be issued with a re-

location kit, a solar panel and light kit witha cellphone charger.”The interim accommodation at the main

farm will precipitate the development of 500single dwelling landunits to be built nearby.There the City will apparently also build

a taxi rank, a park, shops and a daycare cen-tre.The relocation has commenced despite vo-

ciferous objections from Richmond Parkand Melkbosstrand residents.The Richmond Park land has nonetheless

been re-zoned for light industrial use, a mo-ve which Gqada claims will bring “directeconomic benefits to the claimant communi-ty who were forcibly removed from the landmore than 50 years ago”.The claimant community (land owners

and tenants) were removed from the areabetween 1972 and 1984 by the apartheid go-vernment.During 1998 around 28 families of informal

residents moved in and settled on the land.Nine of the 401 families are part of the Rich-mond Park Restitution Claimant Communi-ty (RPRCC).

Claimants have been told that they will own25 percent of the shares of their partnereddevelopment company and will also receiveR40 million in payment for leasing theirland. The RPRCC has also pledged R6500 to-wards each family of informal residents.

Yet, by this weekend only a handful of fa-milies had received their money.

According to an active dissenter and sup-porter of the informal residents who are for-ced to move, Toni Tresadern, the only peoplewho have received the money (by Monday),were those who had bank accounts.

“There are so many things wrong withthis move,” says a visibly upset Tresadern,who is particularly concerned about thechildren.

She has been heavily involved in the com-munity for 11 years and has opposed the mo-ve ever since she heard about it.

She says that individual families who hadpreviously been living on a large plot of landare now forced to move into a space as bigas a soccer field with other families.

“Different cultures will be squeezed toge-ther into little shacks,” she says, adding thatthere will undoubtedly be clashes betweenWolwerivier residents.

“I’m just trying to keep the people aliveand kicking, but they are so disturbed now,because they don’t know what’s going on,even I have become an enemy. Everybody isto blame now. I took two old ladies to gettheir IDs so that they can get their SASSA

payments, and some of the others are shou-ting and screaming at me! Who can blamethem? The City hands them a piece of papersaying they have to move or they will comewith bulldozers!”

According to her the people who used theland prior to the Wolwerivier relocationwarned the City that it was prone to flood-ing, but this warning fell on deaf ears. Thiswas confirmed when she visited the settle-ment over the weekend.

Tresadern is fearful that an unparralelledwave of crime will hit the surrounding com-munities of Melkbosstrand, Morning Starand nearby farms. At the time of going topress, the City of Cape Town has failed to res-pond to any queries.

Most people would agree that seven-teen-year olds are supposed towatch television, go to parties andgenerally excel at making life hardfor their parents. Alexia Nortierfrom Sunningdale didn’t get the me-mo.

Instead she raised R19 000 to helpfund a shelter for the Dogs DeserveBetter rehabilitation centre near

Malmesbury, thereby winning theWestern Cape LeadSA Youth Herofor June.

This Elkanah House learner hashad a hand in numerous animal-re-lated philanthropic causes over theyears and was finally recognised asa sterling example for her peers.

“I’ve always volunteered for ani-mal rescues and stuff, so when I sawan advertisement about a womannear Malmesbury who needed help,me and a bunch of friends went the-

re to help out. We were shocked atthe living conditions.

“She had about 40 dogs she rescu-ed from the street and there weredogs living in a 3x6 meter wendyhouse,” she recalls.

“We did what we could, but it wasclear that the woman needed extrahousing, so I made a little posterwith a collection tin and started rai-sing funds.

“It took a long time and plenty ofdifferent projects to get the money.An organisation called Dancers forDogs saw the Facebook page and al-so helped raise the money needed.My goal was to raise betweenR15 000 and R20 000 and we mana-ged to raise R19 000 so we were pret-ty happy,” she says with a smile.

Before too long the Malmesburyorganisation boasted with a muchlarger ‘Nutec house’ – mostlythanks to Alexia.

This victory, along with nume-rous others, earned her the award.

“My mom sent LeadSA a letterand told them about some of thethings I did. They then let her knowI had won!”

The letter is available on Lead-SA’s website, and reads:

“Her empathy with the plight ofanimals and support from all whohave helped her with her projects isremarkable and she can be proud ofherself. This is who Alexia is. Herpassion for helping animals hasmoulded her into a remarkable yo-ung girl.”

So why does she do it?Says Alexia: “You only have one

life to live and if you have the oppor-tunity to make a difference youshould grab it with both hands.”

Some of the homeless people inMontague Gardens have beenguilty by association despite

performing a vital role in the area.Last week a homeless couple “per-

formed their unofficial neighbour-hood watch duties” and stopped sus-pected criminals from stealingabout R6 500 of diesel from the Mon-tague Gardens company, JEF Engi-neering.

The homeless couple, who preferto remain anonymous because someof their family members don’t knowthey are living on the street, liveoutside one of the many warehousesalong Stella and Esso Road, are well-known among the local businessfolk because of their role as thestreet’s unofficial neighbourhoodwatchers.

VagrancyThis bit of good news follows on

two TygerBurger articles in the lastmonth where some people have voi-ced their concern regarding the in-crease in vagrancy in the area.

One reader was particularly per-turbed at the perception that was be-ing created that vagrancy is linkedto crime.

Said Kyle Mason-Jones in a letterto the newspaper: “In recent yearsI have become very worried by whatI see as a growing hostility towardthe poor. A particularly troublingpart is that many people in govern-ment, business and the general pu-blic seem to be equating povertywith criminality.”

Mason-Jones’ perception is vindi-cated by the latest incident.

Early last Monday morning thehomeless couple heard a commoti-on at the premises of JEF Enginee-ring at the back of the BP refineries.

Protect businessesSays Elaine Scott, a spokesperson

of the engineering company: “Thehomeless man walks up and downthe streets at night. They took itupon themselves to protect the busi-nesses, as there have been peopledumping all sorts of stuff onto ourpremises.”

Elaine said the man was doing hisrounds at about 02:00 that morningwhen he heard a noise in JEF’s

yard.“Two men had broken open our

diesel tank and had siphoned it into25L drums, all ready to go. The mannoticed there was something wrongand saw movement at the premisesand went to check,” she said.

The homeless man, who owns acellphone, then called the policewhen he saw the men. The police ar-rived at the scene, but the men hadmade a run for it.

Watching“Unfortunately the two guys got

away, but they had to drop the die-sel. Jonathan and his family thentook to watching the diesel until wecould come out,” she said.

“We would like to give them someessentials to say thank you.”

The manager of the Tygerberg As-sociation for Street People, JannieMajied, says he finds it concerningwhen people automatically link va-grancy with crime.

He nonetheless adds that crimi-nals often “hide” among vagrants.

Says Majied: “Criminals have aplace to stay, but they sell drugs androb people while posing as homelesspeople.”

SixMelkbosstrandNational SeaRescueInstitute (NSRI) members braved mis-ty weather and rough seas last Wed-

nesday night to save two fishermen off theElands Bay coastline.

The extraordinarily dedicated NSRI vo-lunteers finally managed to bring the fis-hermen home at 06:00 Thursday morning,just in time to take a quick shower and getto work.

NSRI Melkbos’ station commander, Rhi-ne Barnes, was joined by crew membersBruce Sandmann, Louis Roux, Hein Kohneand first-timers Mardi Valke and DaleneErasmus when they left for Elands Bay.

Accompanying them was Marnette Mey-er, who took a couple of photographs of therescue.

On a missionSays Barnes: “We first got a call from

NSRI Mykonos at 18:00 on Wednesdaynight, asking us to help rescue the fisher-men, because their boat was out of serviceand it would take them (Mykonos) sevenhours to get to the scene. I asked our crewto get ready and prepare for a long, coldnight. Thirty minutes later we got the callfor our assistance.”

The volunteers drove to Elands Bay withtheir rescue boat Spirit of Vines and arrivedthere at 21:00.

The fishermen, aged 73 and 45-years-old,first alerted rescue services of their predica-ment by cellphone.

Their 25 horse powered motor lost died onthem somewhere near Elands Bay. The onlyinfo they had was that the water was about20 meters deep and they could barely spotan orange light on the coast. The mist weregetting heavier and the waves increasinglychoppy.

The NSRI and the local police had lost ra-

dio contact with the fishermen, so rescueservices had to try and figure out where thefishermen were most likely to be.

Homeward boundBy 23:00 they formulated a strategy and

launched their boat to start the search.According to Barnes the freezing cold fis-

hermen were finally spotted about a mileoff the coast, when one of the NSRI sear-chlights reflected off one of the fishermen’s

jackets.After the rescue the Spirit of Vines had to

go all the way to Lambert’s Bay for recove-ry. At 03:00 she reached Lambert’s Bay andthen three hours later they finally got backto Melkbosstrand.

Concludes Barnes: “It was the first opera-tional call for Mardi and Dalene and theydid exceptionally well!”

The two thank everyone who had a handin the rescue.

Contrary to popular belief, pugs are actual-ly dogs.

Something pugs cannot quite manage,they try, but that tongue refuses to stay in-side that cheek! These oddities are exactlywhat distinguishes pugs from mere dogs.

About 20 pugs proudly waddled down Ot-to du Plessis Drive on Sunday in the nameof Pug Rescue SA.

Humans and other dogs stopped and sta-red at the googly-eyed creatures as theyhuffed and puffed their way down thestreet.

Let’s face it – pugs are adorable! This isthe sentiment of Pug Rescue SA’s LilianLooney.

“I love them because they are so lovable!They stick to you like glue! They’re non-agressive and very good with children.”

She adds matter-of-factly that pugs are“not actually fighting breeds at all”.

Looney fosters four pugs herself and can-not get enough of them.

ThePug-a-Thon, a 2kmwalk formembersof Pug Rescue SA and their dogs, started infront of Doodles restaurant under heavyclouds.

While some sought shelter from the rainthe adverse weather conditions actuallysuited them, as these dogs prefer coolertemperatures while walking.

Looney continues: “99.9% of these pugswere adopted through Pug Rescue SA,which then finds homes for them. We getthem in and immediately sterilise themand microchip them, foster them out andfind homes for them.

“Fortunately there are a lot of pug loversaround who will then go and do a homecheck and see if the home is suitable. Thepug must be inside, you have to understandthe breed. They cannot have unsupervisedaccess to a pool, other than that just lots oflove. Pugs are a very loving breed, but theydo shed hair 365 days of the year, they’re“teflon dogs”, because they want to be withhumans all the time.”

Pugs live up to 17 years and are, accor-ding to Looney, one of the best breedsaround.

People may think that by using gas, youare automatically saving both money andenergy. Although that is certainly true, the-re are a few tips you can follow to easeyour pocket even further.

In the case of a gas stove, heat is produ-ced by burning LP (liquid petroleum) gas.The more gas you burn, the more heat isproduced by the flame. The smaller the fla-me, the less gas is burned and the less in-tense the heat produced.

Heat absorbed by a cooking pan and itscontents usually cause the temperature torise. However, once the boiling point of aliquid is reached, further heating will notcause the temperature of the contents torise until all the liquid has evaporated.

The higher the temperature within acooking pan, the quicker the cooking. Ho-wever, if the temperature that is too highyou might burn the food.

By following these steps you will be ableto use less gaswithout compromising yourcooking.

V Use metal pots, such as stainless steelMetals, especailly cast iron, are good con-ductors of heat. Pots and pans made ofgood heat-conductors are more efficient.

V Maintain shiny outer surfaces onpans. Shiny surfaces reject heat (by con-vection) at a lesser rate than dull or blacksurfaces do.

V Use a pan that iswide enough to coverthe flame.Heat that is not absorbed by thepan and its contents is a waste.

V Once food comes to a boil reduce the

flame so that it is just enough to maintainboiling. A boiling curry, for instance, willbe at about 100 °C. Nomatter how high theflame, it is impossible to increase the tem-perature beyond this.

V During preparation do not add exces-sive quantities ofwater, expecting it to re-duce the quantity ofwater by cooking overa long time on a high flame. Instead addenough water so that cooking can be doneon a lower flame for the required duration.

V Keep the pan closed whenever possi-ble. An open pan will allow heat to escapemore rapidly than a closed pan would. Es-caping steam is also a loss of heat. Trappingthis steam inside the pan will allow coo-king on a lower flame.

V Make sure the flame is colourless orblue. Yellow flames are an indication of in-complete burning . It is best to get a techni-cian to take a look at the cooker or replaceit.

V Use a cookerwhich gives an appropri-ately sized flame. Many cookers availablein the market do not allow the regulationof the flame to a sufficiently low level. Thiscauses an unnecessarily high flame whichuses too much gas.

V Use a pressure cooker. Pressure coo-kers are very good at saving energy becau-se they cook food at temperatures around125 °C, depending on the pressure of thepressure cooker, while ordinary pans canonly reach around 100 °C, because they areonly under atmospheric pressure.V Source: WikiHow

Making themost of gas

We rely on our gas boilers, cookers and firesto keep warm, have hot baths and showersand cook our meals.

However, it is important that gas applian-ces are regularly serviced to help keep us safeand prevent them from breaking down whenwe need them the most.

Stay gas safe with these top tips:V Have all your gas appliances, including

boilers, gas cookers and gas fires, safety chec-ked annually.

V Check gas appliances for warning signsthat they are not working properly e.g. lazyyellow flames instead of crisp blue ones, blackmarks or stains on or around the applianceand too much condensation in the room. Re-member that an unsafe appliance sometimeshas none of these signs at all.

V Only use gas appliances for their intendedpurpose- don’t use a gas oven to heat a room.

V Always ensure there is enoughventilationfor your gas appliances to allow it to burn

correctly and make sure you are not bloc-king any air vents.

V When cooking with gas, make sure theflame does not go out – gas can escape si-

lently and invisibly.V Recognise the symptoms of carbonmonoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness,

nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss ofconsciousness.

More good advice:V Never leave cooking unattended;V Never get distracted. If you are called

away, turn off the gas;

V Never allow a child to cook without adultsupervision;

V Keep stoves and cook tops free of greaseand fat build-up;

V Hang tea-towels and oven mitts awayfrom the stove;

V Wear tight-fitting sleeves when cooking;V Ensure the exhaust fan above the stove

is clean and free of grease and fat build-up;V Have a fire blanket and extinguisher in

the kitchen;V Ensure smoke alarms are working; andV Have a fire escape plan in place.

I agree there are too manypreventable road deaths on ourroads. So being safety con-scious, I purchased a car withmany safety features such aspre-crash radar and run-flattyres.

Run-flat tyres have solid sidewalls, so the car maintainscontrol even during a tyreburst at 120km/h. It is, howev-er, not compatible with speedhumps.

Every speed bump is builtdifferently. Many motorists

A speed bump is only effec-tive on a small stretch of road.Effective policing, on the otherhand, would punish the unsafedrivers.

Maybe the root of the prob-lem is ineffective policingwhich a few speed hump isunlikely to solve. Why do wehave to pay tax for ineffectivepolicing and then pay for aspeed humps to cover up? Iwould rather support a petitionfor effective policing.

At the wheel of his classC, VW Caddy bakkie, a model designed asa light commercial workhorse, his oppositi-on included the latest in total engineeringfrom BMW and Audi among others and hewas down in 22nd place on the starting gridafter the final practice session.But when the heavens opened up at the

start, he used his headmore than his accele-rator as he picked his way carefully throughthe field. With cars going off the track in alldirections, it was a magnificent performan-ce. So much so that he briefly led the entire

field until having to settle in second placewhenhewas passedDanie vanNiekerk’s 325BMW, shortly before the finish.While the Midas category has a bye this

week, the hyper-enthusiastic Leite will beseen in his low life class D, Fiat 128 Rallyein the Mutlu Battery Classic Car events.Could there be a repeat performance if itrains?Whether wet or dry, he is going to face up

The u-13 Coca-Cola Craven Week ended inDurban on Friday with a 29-14 win for Wes-tern Province- the unofficial ‘final’ of theweek.Thewinmeant thatWPwere the only team

to come through the week unbeaten, leavingno doubt that they were the best side overthe four days of play.The final featured a contrast of playing sty-

les. Province had the stronger forwards andthree of their five tries came from drivingmauls, while Border had the most excitingbackline at the week.They man-aged to score two tries in the fi-

Milnerton Squash Club enjoyed a ve-ry successful streak last month.The club hosted its first public

tournament, which 11 teams entered.Matches were played within a 20 minute

time limit and the player with the mostnumber of points at the end, was declaredthe winner.The club is very proud of its juniors who

are participating in the interprovincialtournament this month. Aidan Ward wasselected to represent the WP u-13C team,whoare playing inPortElizabeth. Thiswasthe first year he has been selected. He alsofinished 17th in his first u-13 WP Open ear-lier this year as well.

Accolades all roundJordyn Campbell is having an equally

impressive year thus far, building on lastyear’s success. In 2013 in the u-11 category,she won the WP Open, Boland Open, PaarlOpen and Strand Open. Moving up to thenext age group is always a tough task, butshe has excelled again, finishing 7th in theu-13 Bloemfontein Open and 2nd in the u-13WP Open.After theWP ranking events, Jordynwas

selected as the no.1 for the u-13 WP teamto play in Port Elizabeth.Fellow team member Dario Hendrickse

has been selected for the WP u-14B team totravel to Johannesburg for the interprovin-cial. He will be playing number 3 in theteam. He also moved up to a higher agegroup this year, and achieved a 9th in theu-14 Boland and WP Open.Justin Maritz has been selected as the

no.3 in the WP u-16 team, off to compete inEast London. This is the fourth year he hasbeen selected to represent WP. He has beenselected as the captain of Milnerton HighSchools 1st team, even though he is only ingrade 10.
