Authorities had their hands full trying to calmdown fiery residents on Monday night’s meet-ing about the closure of the Tygerdal dumpingsite.

The majority of those present were happy thatcouncil has decided to close the site down, but therewere also others who don’t agree with the decision.One of the main issues of contention was that the

dumping site was establishedwithout the proper li-cence, and now that council has decided to close itdown they must first wait to get a licence for thenew site.This process could take three years.Those who live in the vicinity of the dump site

were in full force at themeeting, whichwas chairedby ward councillor Sakkie Pretorius and mayoralcommittee member for utility services, ShehaamSims.Pretorius tried to keep the proceedings light-

hearted and Sims spoke confidently about the wayforward, but residents were inconsolable in the be-ginning.It was only after they were enlightened that they

found hope for the future.As things stand, the dumping site in the residen-

tial zone will definitely be closed and until this hashappened variousmeasureswill be implemented toease the irritation of those living in the vicinity.Various sites within a seven kilometre radius

have been identified as possible alternatives, butthe environmental impact assessment and the li-cence application will take up to three years.TygerBurger has reported in the past about the

foul stench, vile dust andexcruciatingnoise comingfrom the site for the last three years.Complaints have finally been heeded, but nowpa-

tience is the name of the game.During themeeting,whichwasaquestionandan-

swer session, the issues of residents were carefullyexplained.The meeting threatened to explode at one point,

especially when one resident who lives much fur-ther away from the site said: “Where are the peopleofGoodwood?Most of those here are fromTygerdal!If you want to shut down this site then I want coun-cil to shut down Voortrekker Road, because it is al-so verynoisy! If they close down this site then I hopethey build a squatter camp here!”

live in the immediate vicinity and who alsodoesn’t want the site to be closed, has a gar-den service and doesn’t want to drive sevenkilometres instead of just two or three.Sims revealed at that stage that the idea

is to reduce the radius fromseven to fivekilo-metres.The main issue during the night was

summed up by an irate resident who said:“Letmeget this straight. The sitewas openedwithout a licence. So it is operating illegally.Now we are told that we have to wait up tothree years while council applies for a li-cence for the new site?”The response, which was given by Alfonso

van Vuuren, the manager of Solid WastePlanning,was that the lawhas changed sincethe site was opened years ago.

He said: “Legislation didn’t require sucha licence before. Wemust apply for a closurelicence and then adhere to the legislation byapplying for a licence at the new site.”The residents were promised that the situ-

ation will be resolved, but this cannot comequickly enough for those who live near thenuisance.One person even suggested that the com-

munity must toyi-toyi in the street until itis sorted out.The conviction of Sims in particular put

many minds at ease, however.She said that she will give this matter the

utmost attention and begged people to be pa-tient.The agenda for the next meeting has been

identified, which was how one can reducethe number of vehicles in the area, put atimeline on the table and the investigationof possible bad practices, such as the dump-ing of oil.It is currently envisaged that the terrain

will be rezoned intomediumdensity residen-tial.

Tygerdal site opinionAs the people left the closure of the Tygerdaldumping sitemeeting,TygerBurger asked themwhether they feelmore optimistic than earlier inthe evening. In general it seems that most wereimpressed with the commitment shown byward councillor Sakkie Pretorius, and specifi-cally mayoral committeemember for utility ser-vices, Shehaam Sims.Most agree with a manwho only wanted to be known as Robert: “Wehave had enough promises. Now is the time foraction.”Here is what some of the other resi-dents had to say:

“As a resident I feel we’ve heard anew commitment and I trust thatcouncil and the City of Cape Townwill move forward with more speedregarding this issue,” says Annemarie Steyn.

Casper Wiese opinions: “CouncillorSims is a very good speaker, but willshe come through? Only time willtell.”

“The whole ofGoodwood had tobe involved in thismeeting. Why isthis being done insecrecy? I’m sureGoodwood wouldn’tbe happy if this sitehad to close,” saysJohan Potgieter.

Henry and Selaelo Arendse muse:“We are rather concerned about thealternative if the site is closed. Withmedium density housing there couldbe an influx of people in the area andtraffic and noise will actually increase. Most properties next to railwaylines are undesirable. Crime will alsodefinitely increase.”

The case of Thabo Bester (23), al-so knownas theFacebook rapist,has recently been postponed inthe Western Cape High Court.

The last time Bester appeared inMay, the state and Bester’s defencefailed to reach an agreement on aplea and sentencing agreement.This time the judge, Andre le

Grange, postponed the case to Au-gust 13 to enable Bester to consulthis lawyer, Susanna Kuun.Bester was transferred from

Leeuwkop Prison in Johannesburgto the Drakenstein CorrectionalCentre in the Western Cape, so Ku-un didn’t have enough time to takeinstructions.In an unrelated case, Bester was

sentenced to 50 years in prison forraping and robbing two women.He was sentenced to 15 years in

jail on each count of rape and 15years on each count of robbery.Five years of each robbery was sus-pended.Bester was dubbed the Facebook

rapist as he used the social net-working site to lure women to meet

him. He would meet with the wom-en after claiming that internationalmodelling scoutswere interested inthem. Armed with a knife, he thenraped and robbed them.He is currently accused of killing

26-year-old Nomfundo Tyulu in aSunset Beach guest house.In oneof his court appearanceshe

told the court in mitigation that he

had been raped by his grandmoth-er’s friend when he was young,raped several times by a man whopromised to look after him, and thathe was gang-raped in prison.He said he hadnever seenhis par-

ents and that he lived under excru-ciating conditions with his alcohol-ic grandmother and grandfather ona farm in Gauteng.

Numerous motorists were arrested in thenorthern suburbs area for committingvar-ious road crimes during weekend opera-tions set up by police.Delft clocked in at a total of 13 motorists

arrested in two separate roadblockswhilstan additional four were arrested for thesame offence in areas which include TableView, Ravensmead, Belhar and Good-wood.Goodwood police arrested and took in a

48-year-old suspect charged with drivingunder the influence at an accident scenein Voortrekker Road.This after two men in their early 20s

were arrested on Saturday, for driving un-der the influence and defeating the ends ofjustice.They were reported by the Camera Re-

sponse Unit, after patrols were set up be-tween the Jip de Jager and Durban Roadareas where they were found fleeing from

the scene according to Deputy Chief,Yolande Faro.These patrols saw police officers arrest

a total of 29 suspects and a further 20 mo-torists, for driving under the influence in-cluding a suspect in Bellville arrested forpossession of stolen goods.“We appeal to motorists to be responsi-

ble ... we will continue our zero toleranceapproach,” says Wayne le Roux, CapeTown Metro Police chief.

A life line has been given tohomeless people in Parow,Good-wood, Bellville and surroundingareas by Subcouncil 3.

Allocations from the ward budg-ets of councillors serving in Sub-council 3 has provided employmentsuch as street cleaning and litterpicking to the homeless.

Councillors are also in the proc-ess of working in close collabora-

tion with the Displaced People’sUnit and Social Development De-partment to advance and intensifyprogrammes and interventions forthe area to get the homeless peopleoff the streets.

James Vos, chairperson of Sub-council 3, says creating jobs will en-able homeless people to earn suffi-cient money for accommodation in

shelters, for food and clothing.“It will be the first step on the

road to rehabilitation and it is apractical solution to addressing theneeds of the hundreds of people sur-viving on Cape Town’s streets.

However, the reality remainsquite obvious that the city has ahuge problem as far as vagrancy isconcerned.”

He says a street people need reha-bilitation, and citizens with truecompassion should offer their timeand energy, not their money.

“Appropriate compassion wouldbe to give money to shelters where,with time and patience, trained out-reach workers can gradually movepeople off the streets and into jobs.Rehabilitation is relatively easy

when people have not been on thestreets for very long but, after fiveyears or longer, it is already almosttoo late.”

“There has to be a sustained mes-sage.

“Do not donate directly. Allyou’re doing is bribing them to stayin the area, when they could be as-sisted back to normal lives.”

He added that street people needto be pushed in the right direction,either into rehabilitation, or skillstraining and development.

Jobs only solution for homeless

A Plattekloof woman has givenback to the community and ren-dered her services at a Maitlandschool. Optometrist Nicky Haberlegave free eye examinations andspectacles to scholars after she wasapproached by the Cape Care Cen-tre who asked for some kind of a do-nation for the Garden Village Pri-mary School.

Haberle, an independent optome-trist who started her own practicefrom scratch 16 months ago, saysshe was unable to assist financially,but tried to figure out what she

could do.“As financial support was not

possible, I offered them my skills,”she tells TygerBurger.

“After I was approached, infor-mation was sent to and fro to vali-date the information and 35 school-children from Grades 4 to 7 receivedan eye examination. It was identi-fied that seven children were eithervery short sighted or far sighted.”

She says it was her duty to dosomething because their eyesightwould affect their school perform-ance.

“Something had to be done imme-diately. I managed to secure seven

frames from David Green Eyewearand the spectacles lenses were kind-ly sponsored by Essilor.”

Haberle says it was such a privi-lege for her to work with the chil-dren.

“It was great for me to assist thechildren. I’m glad that the scholarsgot the assistance they needed. Oureyesight is very important and es-pecially for the scholars who needto go through school work and alsowrite exams,” she says.

“At the end of the day we had sev-en very lucky scholars who got theassistance they needed and thismade all of us proud.”

It was one small purchase for Grand-WestCasinoandonegiant leap fornovel-ty.

GrandWest now boasts the first custom-ised, completely enclosed electric buses inCape Town.

The four technological marvels run so si-lently that GrandWest had to install speak-ers playing music on the outside of the busesjust to warn pedestrians that the vehiclesare approaching!

Quite why these pedestrians are walkingif they could be floating silently across theparking terrain is open for debate.

The financial benefits of the new busesequate to a 52 percent to 55 percent reduc-tion in overall annual operating costs be-tween November and June, and a drop of 80percent in monthly fuel costs.

Maintenance costs are nearly a third ofthat of the diesel buses and parts cost a quar-ter of their diesel counterparts.TygerBurger spoke to engineering man-

ager, Johan Gelderblom last week to let himexplain some of the technical cost projec-tion to laymen.

“We save on diesel, but there is a cost perkilowatt hour. On a daily basis we will use18 kilowatts of electricity. The diesel wouldbe...”

He studies his notes for a while.“The fuel cost before on a monthly basis

averaged between R4 000 and R5 000 amonth. Kilowatt cost would be R590.”

All these numbers can get confusing aftera while.

Gelderblom thankfully leaves the per-centages and cost behind and continues:“We were looking at the different options toreplace the diesel buses and see if they’resuitable for our needs. We considered look-ing into the possibility of electric buses. Wefound a supplier, who then customisedthese buses just for us.”

GrandWest had a test bus for four monthsprior to the purchase to check the suitabili-ty and looked at how the guests respondedto it.

Suffice to say, they couldn’t get enough ofit.

Some would even wave the diesel busespast and waited specifically for the electri-cal ones.

Says Gelderblom: “We have a big parkingarea, so we want to make guest experiencesbetter. We pick them up undercover anddrop them off undercover as well, so if itrains then they wont get wet.”

One bus would drive about 85 kilometresa day, so countless people’s lives have beentouched.

The environment is, of course, also one ofthe beneficiaries. The daily fleet emissionsof the electric buses is 45,36kg of CO2, com-pared to the 108,86 CO2 diesel emissions. An-nually, fleet emissions are reduced by 58.33percent. Even for the numberphobic, thismakes for impressive reading.

Although the technology for the buses hasbeen available for some time, these are thefirst completely closed buses to be used.

Dat Rikus ’n man van vele talenteis, is beslis. Die skilderye in die kof-fiewinkel is sy eie handewerk, so

ook byvoorbeeld die tafels wat hy insy motorhuis aanmekaar getimmerhet. Hy’t ook pas ’n boek geskryf en’n halfmarathon kafgedraf.

Hy het argitektuur gestudeer enlater ’n advertensieagentskap besit.Totdat hy eendag besluit het omweer ’n ommeswaai in sy lewe temaak en ’n koffiewinkel te koop.“Ek’t niks geweet van restaurante

nie, maar ek’t geweet hoe om ’n pro-duk te bemark.”

Die feit dat sy onderneming ge-sonde groei getoon het sedert dienuwe Oppiekoffie sy deure oopge-maak het, is bewys hiervan.

Maar dis egter nie net die heerli-ke kos wat die mense teruglok nie.Dit is die mense.

Drunk driving is one of thebiggest threats to road safetyin South Africa.

According to Arrive Alive, re-search indicates that 50 percentof people who die on the roadshave a blood alcohol concentra-tion above 0.05 gramme per 100millilitres.

“It is my hope that these messages getthrough to young people to think againabout driving under the influence of alco-hol.”

He says social media should be consid-ered as a mechanism and tool of takinga creative approach to an anti-drink driv-ing campaign.

“My research has proved that in coun-tries with high levels of social media us-age, young people are making use of this

platform to engage each other about suchimportant issues. Too often drink drivingcampaigns talk down to young people,”says Vos.

“The fact of the matter is that youngpeople over-consumealcohol, but herewehave an example of the way in which so-cial media are working towards greateralcohol awareness by putting social mar-keting theory into practice, and to gooduse.”

such as tanzanite, ajoite, and verdite shinenaturally in the soft sunlight.For the layman, however, it doesn’t mat-

ter what the objects are called or how theycame to be.Jo’s words, interesting as they were,

could not competewith the jaw-dropping ex-hibition in Bothasig on Saturday.Once a month the club members get to-

gether at the clubhousewith the aim to raiseawareness and sell some of the items togawking individuals.It is the only club of its kind in Cape Town

andmembers come from as far asMontagueand the Northern Cape.“It’s a hobby club for peoplewho likemin-

eral specimens, gemstones, cabochons (pol-ished stones), and crystals. We have threemachines in here which members can useto cut gemstones after they do the prelimi-nary course,” she elaborates, before addingthatmembers cangoonorganised field tripsand listen to interesting talks.The multiple benefits of joining the club

• Geen persoon mag ’n onafhanklike skoolvestig of instandhou of leerders inskryf by so’n skool sonder ’n sertifikaat van registrasievan die Wes-Kaape Onderwysdepartement(WKOD) nie.

• Ouers word aangemoedig om eers vas testel of ’n Onafhanklike Skool geregistreer isvoordat hul kind daar geregistreer word.

• Aansoeke vir die registrasie van ’n onafhaklikeskool moet aan die WKOD voorgelê word, via’n onderrigdistrikskantoor, teen 30 Junie vandie jaar voor die skool van voorneme is om inwerking te tree.

Die lojaliteit van ’n kerngroepspelers, die nougesette toewy-ding van die bestuurspan en ’nhardwerkende afrigtingskorps.Hieraan kan die welslae van dierugbyklub Durbanville/Bellvil-le hierdie seisoen toegeskryfword.

Die Durbies is vanjaar die top-span in die WP se Superliga (nadathulle in 2010 tweede agter die Ma-ties geëindig het en verlede seisoen

vierde op die punteleer was).Dit bring mee dat die Durbanvil-

lers die WP aanstaande maand inRustenburg tydens die nasionaleklubkampioenskapstoernooi salverteenwoordig. Dit is die eerstekeer dat ’n klub in die Tygerberg-streek hierdie eer te beurt val.

Maar hierdie welslae het nie oor-nag plaasgevind nie. Carel Steen-kamp, die klub se voorsitter, sê dithet ná verlede seisoen se paar nael-skraapse nederlae deeglike beplan-ning geverg. En dan voeg Jan Oost-huizen, die klub se hoofafrigter by:

“Midde-in ’n puik struktuur het el-ke individuele speler sy kant ge-bring en ingekoop op die ses pilarewaarop die klub funksioneer: ge-loof, dissipline, fiksheid, gesind-heid, respek en geduld.

“ Die spelers leef elkeen van hier-die strategieë pligsgetrou uit metgetroue bywoning van die oefenin-ge, verduidelik Oosthuizen.

As beplanning en afrigting dievertrekpunt is, kan ’n klub se suk-ses egter steeds nie verseker wordsonder sy spelers nie. En in hierdieopsig is die Durbies, wat met 350 ak-

tiewe spelers spog, besonder gese-end – ten opsigte van talentvolle, so-wel as lojale spelers. So byvoor-beeld het Marius White en WayneThoressen elk al meer as 100 wed-stryde vir die klub se eerste spanuitgedraf (met die inspirerendeWhite meer as 90 keer as kaptein),terwyl manne soos Divan Batt, Mor-né Mennigke, Marius Visser en Ma-rio Ruster ook vinnig op pad nahierdie mylpaal is. Ander staatma-kers in die eerste span is ChristoffJanse van Rensburg, KoppeSchmidlin, Pieter Wium, Liaan

Scriven, Izak Saayman, Luvo Sogi-dashe en Sinethemba Zweni.

Maar ’n topklub bestaan nie netuit ‘n twintig spelers nie. Die andervyf senior spanne van die klub, so-wel as die drie o.20-spanne, vaarewe uitstekend, vertel Carel Steen-kamp. Om so ’n groot klub sukses-vol te bestuur, verg ook finansiëleondersteuning. Cape Town (Goodwood) and nationalKung Fu Master, MJ Li (Muhammad Ju-naid Chafeker) has just returned fromThe Legends of Kung Fu World MartialArts Championship in Houston, USAwhere he won gold and finished first inthe Internal Other Taiji (Tai-chi) KungFu divisions.

The Goodwood resident further addedto that, two more gold medals achievedin the Special Exhibitions Events underBagua and H-Sing-I Forms Divisions.

Li was part of approximately 1 000kung fu athletes who converged on TheMarriot Westchase Convention Centrein Downtown Houston. Athletes from asfar afield as Peru, Canada, Mexico, Tai-wan, Hong Kong and China competed.

Li was the only South African who rep-resented the country.

Competition was tough and saw manyregional, national and even continentalchampions competing at The LegendsWorld Champs.

This was Li’s third World Kung FuChampionship in which he representedSouth Africa.

Previous competitions saw him in2006 finish third at The World Tradition-al Kung Fu Champs in Beijing, China.

He finished second in 2010 at TheWorld Chin Woo Kung Fu Champs inShanghai, China and now arguably hisfinest performance at a World Champi-onship. He describes the feeling of win-ning gold and being crowned “World In-ternal Taiji Kung Fu Champion” asamazing yet a humbling experience thatsees one reflect on years of hard work,sacrifice and training.

Ian, who attends Bellville High School, firstpicked up a club at the tender age of three.“I remember I was eight when my dad took

me for my first golf lesson and the followingyear I entered the Paarl Junior Classic atBoschenmeer.“It was very special to win the first tourna-

ment I ever entered. I was always fond of thesport and at 14 I decided this is what I wantedto do. I want to be a professional golfer.”Paul Mackenzie has had a massive impact

in the past five years he’s been working withIan.“Coach Paul has helped me tremendously –

not only with getting my swing where it needsto be, but to be mentally fit as well.“Over the past few years my swing has be-

come much more consistent and it is very re-warding to see the results of our hard work onthe course.”Ian has represented Western Province golf

on every level. He played u-12, u-14, u-16, u-19,u-23 and made the senior team.This impressive resumé caught the eye of

scouts for the Ernie Els Foundation of whichIan has been a part for two and a half years.Only the proverbial cream of the crop get se-

lected to represent the Ernie Els Foundation.Playing on the world stage can be an intimi-

dating experience, but some relish the oppor-tunity to go head to head with the world’s fin-est.“It was a great experience to represent our

country last year at theWorld Junior Champi-onship in Italy. South Africa finished third inthe team competition and individually I fin-ished 17th out of 100 golfers.”Earlier this year in June, Japan hosted the

Junior u-19 World Cup where 13 countrieseach entered four players. Although the teamonly managed to secure 11th spot, which wasa huge disappointment for the SouthAfricans,the experience gained will be invaluable in fu-ture competitions.“I have never played courses so well mani-

cured, the greens and fairways are immacu-late. It was also an eye-opener to see how wellthe guys putt, it made me realise that I needto work even harder with the flat stick.”Having been asked who his favourite golfer

of all-time is, the answer was an emphatic:“Ernie Els!”. Ian’s dream fourball would con-sist of Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, Bubba Watsonand Gary Player.“My dream is to be number one in the world
