    Programs like A Bag’s Life already are hard at workeducating the public and promoting the “3 Rs”: reduce, reuse, recycle.

    • Just helped design a programfor Albany, GA – to be launched inFall 2015

    • Was asked and agreed to participatein the Keep Georgia Beautiful FoundationExhibitor Showcase in December 2014

    • Has worked with Galveston, TX – another

    coastal community – for the last two years.o Over 350,000 bags (5,000+ pounds) collected in its first year

    o Number of participating schools nearly doubled this year

    Policies Pursued Elsewhere

    • January 2015 – The Huntington Beach, CA City Council voted to begin to

    repeal their bag ban ordinance

    • January 2015 – The Santa Fe, NM City Council announced theineffectiveness of their year-old ban and a need to identify a different pathforward

    December 2014  – Over 800,000 citizens in California signed a petition toplace a statewide bag ban law on hold, and the measure will now go to apublic referendum in November 2016

    • December 2014 – The Mayor of Baltimore, MD vetoed a bag banordinance

    • April 2014 – Local legislators in Johnson County, IA decided to pursuerecycling strategies in lieu of a plastic bag ban

    • November 2013 – Durango, CO voters overturn ban on plastic bags

    Unintended Consequences of a Ban

    • Incentivizes consumers to shop outside of the banregion—an issue for stores located on islands or nearborder regions in particular5 

    • Often creates an inadvertent increase in shoplifting6 

    • Reveals no evidence of a reduction in costs tocommunities charged with handling litter and waste
