Guno and KoyoKala Thairani

From NBT’s Treasure Trove

Guno and Koyo are two names knownto everyone in Indonesia. And whenevertheir names are mentioned peoplecannot suppress a smile, for Guno means"helpful" but he is really very unhelpful.Koyo means "wealth" but he rarely hasany money. What is more, if Koyo everacquires any wealth, his friend Guno, thehelpful, helps him lose it.

It happened once that Guno andKoyo decided to rob an old Hadji(a Muslim holy man). In the darkness ofthe night they entered noiselessly intothe Hadji's house and began to dig a holein the wall. When the hole was bigenough for one man to crawl through,

Guno went inside, lit a candle and by itsdim light collected the Hadji's valuablesand passed them through the opening toKoyo who piled them neatly on theground. As Guno was about to leave, hiseye fell on the Hadji's colourful robehanging on a peg. He removed it andtried it on himself. "Oh, it is grand. I mustnot spoil it," he told himself, feeling therich material with his hands. Seeing theHadji sound asleep, he decided to leaveby the front tentrance. So he tiptoed tothe door unlocked it and went out.

Meanwhile Koyo was waitinganxiously for Guno's return. He satguarding the opening they had dug and

wondered why hisfriend was taking solong inside. Just then,he saw a robed figurestep out from the frontdoor. He thought it wasthe Hadji.

"O-oh. The Hadji,"he screamed in frightand fled, leaving behindtheir pile of loot.

Page 9: twu 2014 ikBd eap cqysfVu - National Book Trust...Indian presentation included a special exhibit of over 200 recently published children's books in English, Hindi, Gujarati and Tamil,

Readers’ Club Bulletin June 2014 / 7

The robed figure was none otherthan Guno himself. When he heardKoyo's frightened exclamation, hethought that the Hadji had awakened andwas right behind him. So he threw downthe robe and ran in swift pursuit afterKoyo.

The two men made so much noisefleeing through the village that theneighbours woke up and rushed out withsticks and sickles to beat the culprits.

Guno and Koyo ran on in headlongflight, too afraid to stop and look back. They ran through the village and acrossthe open fields until they came to theedge of the river.

"Quick. Jump in" said Guno. "We arefinished," wailed Koyo. "If we jump in,we shall be drowned. If we don't thevillagers will catch us and kill us."

"Don't be a coward" Guno said. "Theriver is not in flood. We won't bedrowned."

"If it were in flood," Guno reasoned"the water would be muddy. But it is soclear, you can see the bottom of theriver."

Koyo leaned forward to take aproper look. In the faint starlight hecould see the rocky surface of theriverbed. "You may be right", heconceded. "But you go in first and tellme how it is."

So Guno pulled himself up,breathed deeply, closed his eyes andleaped from the ledge. He landed on anabsolutely dry bed. The stones hurt hisfeet but he did not cry. Instead, he laydown and made swimming motions toconvince his friend that there wasnothing to fear.

Page 10: twu 2014 ikBd eap cqysfVu - National Book Trust...Indian presentation included a special exhibit of over 200 recently published children's books in English, Hindi, Gujarati and Tamil,

Koyo shouted. "Why, don't you saysomething? Is it all right?"

"Can't you see me swimming?" Gunoasked and said, "The water is very nice."

The villagers were now close to theriver and Koyo could hear the clangingof their weapons. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes and jumped from theledge.

Like Guno he landed on the dryriverbed and the stones hurt his feet andknees. "Oo-ho.Where is the water?" heasked Guno.

"Shut up, you fool. Try and swim likeme; otherwise they will pursue us here,"Guno replied. So Koyo also stretchedhimself on the ground and moved hislegs and arms as though he wasswimming.

RainVikalp

When the ocean water

turn into vapours from the sun's heat

the vapours go up to the sky

and become clouds

the clouds have task

to fulfil the wish of land

When the clouds burst

it starts raining

the clouds complete their mission

given by the ocean

to give water to the thirsty land!

The villagers had now reached theledge. Looking down they gazed inwonder at the two frightened men tryingto swim in the river that had been dryfor months.

"Look, Look," they shouted to eachother, amazed beyond belief. Then theylaughed and put down their weapons. They could not bring themselves topunish such silly fugitives.

Since then, whenever a person triesto get out of a difficult situation by afoolish act, people tell him, "Don't goswimming in a dry riverbed."

Every morning, Rajat used to go for awalk. Walking kept him healthy andrefreshed his mind. It was his dailyroutine. Though, health was not the onlyreason for this motivated schedule. Hisfriends would accompany him, so it wasalso the time when he would start theday surrounded by his friends. They werevery dear to him.

Everyday, he would get up at 5 am inthe morning. After having splashed somewater on his face, he would get readywithin 10 minutes and leave for thenearby park. On his way to the park, he

used to admire the trees lining the street. The rustling leaves, moving with themorning breeze, made his heart full ofjoy.

Rajat was quite a nature lover. Heloved looking at the birds, chirping onthe trees' barks while he would humalong sweetly. The agile squirels, whowould move so quickly had caught hisfancy as they would embark on the treeright away, if Rajat approached them.

All this made him delighted and helooked forward to have such a lovelytime in the lap of nature. And, thus he

would reach the park and would meet hisfriends and continue his walk for a quickhalf an hour so as to come back home intime to get ready for school. This washis daily routine. This was his deargrandpa's advice. He had instilled thehealthy habit in Rajat, which he wasproud of.

That day was no different. The clockrang five. Rajat, with same enthusiasm, got up from his bed. He went about hisroutine and geared up for the walk. Thesame fervour rang inside him to enjoynature.

He climbed down the stairs of hishouse thinking about the palm trees, dancing gently to the tune of morningbreeze on the street. By now, he had wellreached the street.

As he moved ahead, he felt uneasy. He rubbed his eyes to make sure whathe saw was real. But still he didn'tbelieve it. The sight was quite gut-wrenching for Rajat. He grew as silentas the grave. His zeal soon gave way todisappointment. He, who loved the treesso much, had to walk without the traceof any of them.

"What has happened to all the trees?Where are they?" he thought. There wasnot a single tree to be found, where onlyyesterday he had enjoyed the morningchants of the birds on the Ashoka tree.

"What a gruesome act! He must be cruelwho fell all the trees overnight," heremarked.

Reflecting profoundly on thehappening of this morning, he stilldecided to go and meet his friends. Hewalked with only man-made buildingsaround him. There were no squirrels nobirds and no greenery around him. Thewhole image was such as someone hadforgotten to put trees in his sketch, theonly thing visible was tall, high risebuildings against backdrop of the sky.

He reached the park. His friends,Rohan and Sonu were eagerly waitingfor him. They both bore the sameexpression of shock. They had beenthemselves quite dumb struck. Onseeing Rajat approaching towardsthem, they hurried to him. What they hadwitnessed was nothing short of amiracle, though not in the positive senseof the word.

"Do you see what has happened?"asked Rohan innocently. "That is quitevisible, Rohan," replied Rajat trying notto be rude to his friend. "Where on earthare all the trees?" asked Sonu. "It wasonly yesterday when we had noticed thatpetite squirrel with a darker hue on thattree and look at it today, there is nothingto look at nothing to admire. Why hasall this occurred suddenly?" he added.

Either of them was as clueless as theother. This sudden transformation hadbefuddled them all. "These high risebuildings have replaced all the trees,"said Rajat. "But how can one be able toreplace them all just in a day?" hepondered. "No trees means no oxygen, how are we going to survive? We don'thave much time left," added Sonu indespair.

While the boys were brooding overthe predicament, everyone else seemedto carry on his business as if nothingsurprising had happened. They noticedthat Sharma uncle, who was a regularvisitor like them for daily morning

walk, was calmly going about hisbusiness.

"Any man with two eyes would beable to find trees missing, how has henot noticed?" asked Rajat. "Do you thinkhe might be behind it?" enquired Sonu, though he was quite sure he must havedone it.

Sonu did not like Sharma uncle.Once Sonu was pissing in the garden ashe could not control the nature's call.He had been caught and reprimandedthoroughly by none other than Sharmauncle. Sonu himself had been aware ofthe wrong doing but it was the urgencythat drove him use the corner of the

park, drawing the anger of Guardian ofthe Park, as Sonu would call him. Thisincident was deeply engraved on hismind and thus his dislike towards Sharmauncle.

Neither Rajat nor Rohan replied toSonu's question. Instead, they thought ofasking the Guardian of the Park aboutthe possible reasons. Both of themapproached Sharma uncle while Sonufollowed them, though unwillingly.

"Excuse-us, uncle, do you have anyidea what has happened this morning?"Rajat and Rohan asked in unison. "I hopeit's not the third World War." remarkeduncle. This was also why the boysloathed him. He could never answer anyquestion directly. "Of course, it is, butbetween man and the nature," quippedSonu. Both Rajat and Rohan werepleasantly surprised at Sonu's reasonableremark.

Taken aback by the crispness of theremark made by Sonu, Sharma uncle hadno choice but to come straight to thepoint. He told them about how theirparents and everyone else had just beencontributing in the felling of trees.

"Many stomachs to feed, many headsto cover under the roof, many hands towork, thus for food, shelter and job, people have cut all the trees. Theyneeded place to stay, they cleared all of

it. Same way, they cut trees to set upfactories where they could employothers and feed their children withwhatever they earned. How do you thenexpect to see the trees all your life? Youhave been, however, lucky that at leastyou have seen what trees are like. Thinkof those who would not be able to seethe floral diversity that nature onceoffered. All that they would be lookingat would be men and women withskyscrapers everywhere. They would notknow the green colour forever."

Sharma uncle's monologue set thethree kids' imagination rolling. Theycould never have thought of a worldwithout trees! Rajat was so upset that hethought the word 'trees' was ringingthunderously in his mind. A few moreclanging in his head and he opened hiseyes just in time to see that it was themorning alarm bell that was ringing.

He got out of his bed to go to thebalcony to find to his relief that the treeswere intact at their places. The Ashokatree stood tall as the previous day. Herealized it was a nightmare, a dreadfulone. Rajat, however knew, that this mightcome true one day if we did not makethe right choices. He then got ready forhis morning walk and looked forward tothe animated discussion with his friends.

Faiyzee was a water-carrier in Kashi.During summer time he distributed wateramong passers-by. A few kind peopletipped him dimes at times.Others walkedaway after satisfying their thirst. However, he was always gung-ho, andsang tuneless boring songs to keep awaywoes and worries.

One afternoon it rained heavily andthere was slush on the road. Misra Ji, themiser, slipped and his belongings werescattered on the path. A little later,Faiyzee happened to pass that way andhe found a coin stuck in the mud.

It was a Rupee! The find was afortune for him, to be kept safe andsecured for the future. No place couldbe better than the wall of the royalpalace, he thought.

Fortunately, that afternoon, theguards were making merry in the coolbreeze. Faiyzee spotted a loose brick inthe wall. Placing the coin in one corner,he fixed the brick with mud, to make thewall look as old as centuries. He notedthat the brick was twenty paces from thecheck post which faced a temple.

The coin brought him pots of luck.He got a gardner's job at a rich mansion. He saved good money and in due course

The Miracle of A CoinSarla Bhatia

married Jhunjhun, a maid working in thatvery house. Two salaries, a good hut tolive in and a beautiful wife gave Faiyzeeimmense satisfaction.

In a flush of happiness he confidedin his wife about the buried coin. Thecouple decided to splurge at the Teejfestival, a popular event in the rainyseason. Faiyzee was determined to givehis bride a time of her life.

A day before the big event, Faiyzeewalked out in spite of pouring rain. Ashe was removing the brick, a guard

caught him and shouted, "Hey, what areyou upto?" The guard dragged him to theCourt, saying he suspected Faiyzee oftrespassing inside the palace, with anintention to remove valuables. The kingthought, "A thief would have preferreddarkness, instead of broad daylight. Moreover, what makes this man facesuch a bad weather?" He wanted to knowthe truth.

"What was your mission, youngman?" asked the king.

"My Lord, I was trying to recover thecoin which I had buried in the palace-wall. I wanted to give a present to mywife at the Teej," answered Faiyzee. Thecourtiers laughed loudly,"What a yarn?"But the king was not surprised, becauseof his simplicity and guileless answer.

"I will give you 10 rupees to have agood time with your wife. Don't spoil

our wall for a rupee,"said the king. "Sire, with your prize I shallhave 11 rupees. Themoney will enableme to present a silvernecklace to mywife," replied Faizee.A clever fellow, everyone thought!

The king decidedto find out the youngadventurer's motives.

He raised the stake to 50 rupees, thento 100 rupees and finally to 1000 rupees.

The young man bowed, thanked hishighness and remarked, "I have 51, 101and 1001 rupees, as the prize money wasraised. Firstly garments, then a coachand finaly a house came on his list ofgifts to his wife. In a disperate move theking asked. "How much money willmake you forget that wretched onerupee?"

"Sir, I cannot forget that rupee. It hasbrought me 1000 rupees. That coin maybe too 'little' compared to your awardsbut it does not lose its value, albeit hasadded to my fortune."

The king got his answer. Wise mensay, "Take care of your 'Pennies', the'Pounds' will take care of themselves."
