Jump Rope for Heart Huge Success at Twin River Twin River Elementary took on the fight against heart disease and stroke this year by participating in an American Heart Association Event. Kindergarten through 6th grade took on the commitment to the American Heart Association in the opportunity to fund lifesaving research – research that will discover new, more effective ways to fight the #1 and #5 causes of death: heart disease and stroke. The students learned how to be heart smart. A few of the items they focused on in elementary PE, taught by Mrs. Van Driel, was eating plenty of fruits and veggies, choosing water over sugary beverages, getting physical activity every day, avoiding tobacco, and watching out for too much sodium. Students also participated in jump roping activities from your single basic jump to learning how to double dutch. The elementary students raised a total of $3,230 to help the fight against heart disease and stroke. Jayden Engler and Macy Nelson were two of the top participants against this fight. Nice work Twin River students.

Dr. Seuss’s Special Week On the week of March 6th Twin River elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss week. This was to celebrate his birthday on March 2nd. Monday the 6th the elementary students and staff were able to wear their p.js to school. Tuesday they dressed up as their favorite character from any Dr.Seuss book. Finally, on Wednesday the students we able to dress up as somewhere they want to go. That idea was taken from the very well know book “Oh the Places You’ll Go.” The students and staff had a great time celebrating.

Basketball Blood Drive By: Justyce Stankoski

The Twin River boys and girls basketball teams hosted their annual blood drive on Monday, March 20th from 11:00 – 5:30 at the Genoa City Hall. They collected a total of 65 units, just three off from their goal of 68. The money raised will go towards two $1,250 scholar-

ships. Thank you to everyone that came out and donated blood, the basketball players that helped, and the city of Genoa for use of the hall.

February Student of the Month By: Cody Turpitt

The students nominated for February Student of the Month were from the seventh and eighth grade. The students that were nominated were Parker Litz, Whitney Schmidt, and Kadren Miller. The student of the month for February was Kadren Miller. Kadren was nominated by a teacher because, “He is an excellent student. He receives super grades, is a very conscientious student, helps others as he see necessary, and is a joy to have in class. He is involved in extra-curricular activities which makes him a very well rounded student.” Congratulations to Kadren and keep up the great work!

8th Graders Attend Central Community College Career Opportunity Fair

Throughout the 2nd semester the Twin River 8th grade class has been doing various career exploration activities with Mr. Koziol. On Wednesday, March 21st they got a chance to turn their lessons into a real life experience by attending Central Community College’s annual Career Opportunity Fair. The fair consisted of two parts; Career & Life Skills Activities and Hands on Career Exploration Activities in the Gymnasium. The Career Exploration Activities event included approximately 24 Career hands-on booths sponsored by area businesses. Students were able to select 12 booths to attend and were be at each booth for approximately 10 minutes at which time the business demonstrated a career(s) in their business. The Career & Life Skill Activities included 6 activities. Students were able to select 3 of the 6 activities to attend, including a campus tour. The six activities included: interviewing techniques, dress for success, job applications, college essentials, virtual career assessment and social media. Overall it was a very informative morning for the 8th graders. By exploring careers, students were able to compare different jobs to their interests along with giving students a firsthand glimpse at different career opportunities.

ATTENTION ALL JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS…SAVE THE DATE The annual Junior High Dance will be on Friday, April 28th. It is being sponsored by the Twin River Student Council and will be held in the Old Gym from 7:00 – 10:30 pm. It will be open to all students grades 6-9. The cost will be $4 per person and school dress code will be enforced. The snack machines will be there for refreshments!!! Come and have fun!

Pre – K Goes on a Field Trip By: Jet-Lynn Worden

On Monday, April 3rd the pre kindergarteners took a field trip the Vine Street Café in Silver Creek. There they went behind the scenes and witnessed how their food is made at a restaurant. Then they were able to eat pancakes and enjoy a nice cold glass of lemon- aid. The students behaved very well on this trip and had a great time.

End of the Quarter The third quarter has come to an end. That means that the final quarter is upon us. The school year has gone fast and will continue to go fast as spring activities are upon us. The seniors last day will be on May 5th. Graduation will soon follow on the 13th, and lastly school is out for everyone either on the 16th or 17th depending on your grade. Stay focused Titans and finish strong!

FFA Attends CDE On Tuesday, February 28th twenty-two students from the Twin River FFA chapter attended the annual Nebraska Agricultural Education Career Development Events, also known as CDE. There were a total of twelve schools in the district, but not every school entered a team in every contest and not all students earn a ribbon. “Our students did fairly well,” stated Ms. Wetovick. “We did not have any qualifying teams in the contests that require qualification to compete at state convention. District Livestock Judging By: Cody Turpitt

On Tuesday, March 7th sixteen FFA students attended District Livestock Judging which took place by Aurora. There were twelve schools total in our district that took place. The top three teams from each division qualified for state. In the senior division they placed fifth as a team and there were a total of sixty-eight individuals. Otto Mohr received 5th place and received a purple ribbon. Samantha Wyman placed 19th and received a red ribbon. Two students received white ribbons, Blaine Jacobi and Sara Czarnick, and placed 28 th and 35th. Others to place were Nina Parry (41st), Trenton Kula (45th), and Mary Czarnick (55th). In the junior division the team placed eighth with a total of ninety-one individuals. Three Twin River students received red ribbons and included Kyle Kemper (18th), Andrew Nelson (20th), and Dalton Gembica (25th). One other student placed and that was Jacob Czarnick coming in 76th.

Quite the Day at District Speech By: Lexus Keyes

What a day and what an evening for the Twin River Speech Family on Wednesday, March 15th. The Titans competed in the District Speech contest at Wayne State College. The Speech family will be taking four members to state! The team participated in an amazingly difficult tournament. Twelve of the eighteen entries broke into finals, including all three freshmen entries. The team finished in 3rd place with a total of 309 points. The top three in each event make it to state. These Titans included Mary Czarnick receiving third in Serious, Preston Connelly and Justin Mohrmann runner ups in Duet, and Ryan Range champion in Extemporaneous Speaking. Others to medal included: Kenzie Whitlow sixth in Poetry, Caitlyn Van Winkle sixth in Humorous, Taylor Kemper, Tyson Jones, Nathan Whitlow, and Beau Wattier all placing fifth in OID, Courtney Nelson fifth in Informative, Catherine Laska fifth in Persuasive, Courtney Nelson fourth in Persuasive, Payton Cherry fourth in Entertainment, Mary Czarnick fourth in Poetry (through a five way tie for first place!), and Trey Fehringer fourth in Humorous (through a three way tie for third!). In total this year the Twin River Speech family brought home 163 individual medals, including 23 individual runner up medals and 18 champions. The coaches are beyond proud of the achievements of the Speech family.

Prom 2017 By: Jet-Lynn Worden

On Saturday, April 1st Twin River held their annual prom for Juniors and Seniors. The theme for the event was Diamonds are Forever. It was a great turnout and many good memories were made. The students enjoyed the meal, which was catered by Country Mile Catering. They also enjoyed dancing with friends, socializ-ing, and had a blast at post prom following the dance.

Stu Co Fun Night 2017 The first annual Fun Night, hosted by the Student Council, was held on Saturday, March 4th. The students that attended had a great time playing pitch, Taboo, Twister, Mat Ball, and lots of other games. The purpose of the event was to have students in grades 7-12 come have an evening of fun with friends during the “dead week” between winter sports and spring sports. Thanks to all the students who came out and had fun, the parents that help sponsor, and the Stu Co members for plan-ning the fun event.

David City Scramble Submitted By: Coach Fehringer

On Tuesday, March 21 the Titan golf team traveled to David City for a three team scramble event to kickoff the golf season. David City, Osceola, and Twin River participated in the nine hole two person scramble. Medals were given to the top three teams. Twin River took the 2nd and 3rd place medals. The team of Austin Grife and Colby Olson shot a 37 for 2nd place, while the team of Natalie Held and Jaxson Hinkle shot a 39 for their 3rd place medals. It was a great way to start the year on a cold windy day! We had some solid scores from our other golf-ers, which included: Jackson Jones/Nolan Ramaekers-40, Landon Cuba/Brandon Miller-43, and Isaac Booth/ Zach Jarecki-45. Our first dual is Monday March 27th at Pawnee Hills as we host Lutheran High Northeast.

First Track Meet of Season On Friday, March 17th the Twin River Titans competed in their first track meet of the season at the Doane Indoor Track. The girls placed seventh out of nine teams and the boys placed eighth. In the 60 meter dash Sara Czarnick placed second, and Curtis Miller broke the boys indoor track record placing sixth. Both participants also placed in the 200 meter dash with Sara coming in third and Curtis coming in sixth. In the 3200 meter dash Alexis Borowiak placed seventh. Both boys and girls did great in the 60 meter hurdles with Beau Wattier breaking the indoor school record and placing first. Gabi Wieck tied the school record in the preliminary round, but did not quite do that well in the final round placing seventh. Ahead of Gabi in the final round was Cali Shanle placing sixth. In the 4x400 meter relay the girls placed seventh, and the boys placed sixth with the team of Joe Zwiener, Jack Reeg, Curtis Miller, and Beau Wattier. Both the girls and boys relay teams placed in the 4x800 relay with the girls placing fifth and the boys seventh. In pole vault Cali Shanle broke the indoor meet school record placing third, Derrick Runge placed fifth tying the school record, and not far behind was Shyla Oberhauser placing sixth. In the long jump Sara Czarnick placed first, and Jack Reeg placed third. In the triple jump Gabi Wieck placed sixth. Lastly, in the high jump Jack Reeg placed second and Beau Wattier placed sixth. It was a great first meet for the track team and they will be working hard to improve for their next meet on the 21st of March.

The Twin River track team traveled to Central City for the Merrick County Invite on March 21st. The girls took third place, out of eight, with 97 points. The boys finished fifth place, out of eight, with a total of 65 points. Sara Czarnick finished first in the 100 meter dash. Also placing were Courtney Nelson finishing second and Irelynd Pearson finishing in 7th. Sara Czarnick also finished first in the 200 meter dash with Courtney Nelson finishing in fifth. Shyanne Sutton finished in fourth place in the 400 meter dash. For the 3200 meter dash Cady Stortzum finished fifth and Alexis Sliva finished seventh. For the 100 meter hurdles Gabi Wieck finished sixth and Cali Shanle finished seventh. For the 300 meter hurdles Lana Hebda finished in fifth. For the girls 4x100 meter dash the girls finished first, and the team consisted of Gabi Wieck, Cali Shanle, Sara Czarnick, and Courtney Nelson. Also placing was Madison Ternus, Payton Rinkol, Irelynd Pearson, and Marissa Morris coming in sixth. The girls 4x400 finished fourth, and the team was made up of Erin Cook, Shyanne Sutton, Taylor Kemper, and Lana Hebda. The girls 4x800 finished in second. For girls pole vault Cali Shanle finished fifth and Shyla Oberhauser finished sixth. Sara Czarnick finished first in long jump. For girls triple jump Courtney Nelson finished second, followed by Gabi Wieck finishing sixth. Lastly for the girls, Mattie Fehringer finished second in Discus. For boys Jack Reeg finished fifth in the 100 meter dash, followed by Curtis Miller in seventh. For the men's 200 meter dash Curtis Miller finished fifth and Mason Prososki finished sixth. In the 1600 meter run Joe Zwiener placed seventh. In the 110 meter hurdles Beau Wattier finished second, followed by Chris Sempek in seventh place. Beau Wattier finished second and Mason Prososki finished third in the 300 meter hurdles. The 4x100 relay team, which consisted of Mason Prososki, Nathan Whitlow, Jack Reeg, and Curtis Miller, placed fourth. The boys 4x800 relay team placed fifth. Jack Reeg finished first in high jump and also long jump. Curtis Miller finished third in long jump. Lastly, Beau Wattier took third in discus.

Track Teams Compete in Riverside Invite On Monday, March 27th the Twin River track teams competed in the Riverside Invite which was held in Fullerton. The girls placed sixth out of eleven, whereas the boys were the runner up. Freshman Marissa Morris placed second in the 100 meter dash. Sophomore Lana Hebda placed sixth in the 400 meter dash. Alexis Borowiak placed fifth in the 3200 meter run. In the 100 meter hurdles Cali Shanle placed seventh, and Gabi Wieck placed eighth. In the 300 meter hurdles Lana Hebda placed fourth, and Shyanne Sutton placed fifth. The 4x100 relay team, which was made up of Gabi Wieck, Cali Shanle, Marissa Morris, and Madison Ternus placed third. The 4x400 relay placed sixth and the team was made up of Erin Cook, Shyanne Sutton, Taylor Kemper, and Lana Hebda. The 4x800 relay team also placed sixth with the runners Caitlyn Van Winkle, Payton Rinkol, Erin Cook, and Chloe Cave. Cali Shanle placed first in pole vaulting, and Shyla Oberhauser placed fourth. In the triple jump Gabi Wieck placed sixth. Lastly in the girls division, Mattie Fehringer placed fifth in the discus throw. For the Twin River boys, Jack Reeg placed third in the 100 meter dash. Joe Zwiener placed sixth in the 400 meter dash, and Brandon Schwalm placed sixth in the 800 meter run. In the 1600 meter run Joe Zwiener placed fourth. In the 3200 meter run Donnie Otto placed sixth. In the 110 meter hurdles Beau Wattier was champion, Mason Prososki was right behind him, and Chris Sempek placed sixth. In the 300 meter hurdles Mason Prososki placed first and Beau Wattier placed second. The 4x100 meter relay received fifth place, and the team was made up of Mason Prososki, Chris Sempek, Jack Reeg, and Andrew Nelson. The 4x400 meter relay received fourth place and included Donnie Otto,Brandon Schwalm, Preston Rice, and Nathan Held. The 4x800 meter relay came in third and included Brandon Schwalm, David Kunes, Donnie Otto, and Dylan Loewe. Jack Reeg and Beau Wattier placed first and third in the high jump, and Jack also placed in the long jump receiving sixth place. Lastly, Beau Wattier placed third in the discus throw.

The Titans Host First Golf Dual of Season On Monday, March 27th the Titan golfers hosted their first dual for the season against Lutheran High Northeast at Pawnee Hills Golf Course. The Varsity scored a 187 and the Eagles golfed a 192. Jaxson Hinkle led the Titans with a 46. All of the other golfers on the varsity team, which were Austin Grife, Jackson Jones, Colby Olson, and Nolan Ramaekers, scored a 47. The top golfer for the day was Lutheran High’s Caleb Gebhardt golfing a 40. The JV had five golfers which included Brandon Miller, Natalie Held, Landon Cuba , Jamison Urkoski, and Zach Jarecki. The Eagle’s only had one golfer compete in the JV competition.

TWIN RIVER QUIZ BOWL TEAM GETS 3RD AT CONFERENCE Submitted By: Coach Sidwell

The Twin River Quiz Bowl Team received 3rd place at the East Husker Conference Tournament on Monday, March 27 th. The team started off 2-1 in pool play with victories over Bancroft-Rosalie and Scribner-Snyder. The team lost to North Bend in pool play. Twin River was then seated 5th in a 17 school bracket. We then beat West Point Beemer in the first round. In the second round we played a tight match against Humphrey and managed to be victorious. In the semi-finals we were matched up against one-seated Oakland-Craig, and even though we played well we fell short of going to the championship. In the consolation match against Clarkson things start off horribly, we started off down 0-45, but the Titans were mighty the last two-thirds of the match scoring 110 unanswered points! The Twin River Quiz Bowl Team members that competed in Monday's Conference Tournament were Tyson Jones, Justin Mohrmann, Jon Laska, Nathan Whitlow, Catherine Laska, and Ryan Range.

Kemper Signs with CCC Volleyball

The Central Community College volleyball team is pleased to announce the signing of Taylor Kemper of Genoa.

Kemper is a 5-10 hitter with Twin River High School. During her senior season, she earned Class C-2 Honorable Mention honors after recording 202 kills, 296 digs and 38 blocks. Kemper also played basketball for the Titans.

"We are excited for Taylor to join our program," said CCC head coach Mary Young. "Taylor will give us great depth at the hitting position and she will really grow as a player in the course of the next two years."

According to Twin River head coach Julie Strain, Kemper began serving as the student manager for the team when she was in seventh grade and always surrounded herself with volleyball to gain knowledge about the game. Strain believes that Kemper has the appropriate work ethic to be successful at the college level.

"Taylor will work very hard to be a key player on the CCC volleyball team this fall," said Strain. "She is very coachable and works at making herself a better player and person."

Kemper plans to major in athletic training. She is the daughter of Jared and Christy Kemper of Genoa.

Club Wrestling By: Justyce Stankoski

Twin River finished tied for 13th place out of 32 teams at districts in O’Neil, and individually seven kids qualified to the USA state tour-nament on March 18th in Grand Island. It was an awesome weekend for Twin River wrestling. The results they showed this weekend makes a coach very proud. Districts in O'Neil and Mat Jam in Kearney are two tough tournaments that prove the team is headed in the right direction. Great job all wrestlers who participated. It is also nice seeing high school wrestlers taking action to better themselves for next season. At Mat Jam Jaxson Jones received first place. Kendrick Staab, Jayden Schroder, and Tucker Alexander all placed second. Jayden had a big win since he beat a kid that has beat him all season. The Titans had one wrestler bring home first from Logan View and that was Cade Kunkel. Both wrestlers that participated in McCool Junction brought home first place and this included Brycen Kula and Spencer Kula. Lastly, the wrestlers that qualified for state were Zac Held, Rocco Gehring, Spencer Kula, Brycen Kula, Mason Tenski, Collin Leach, and Jed Jones. Great job Titans!

Club Wrestling at Central City By: Austin Strain

On Saturday, March 11th Twin River’s Club wrestlers wrestled in Central City. The Titan Club Wrestlers did an outstanding job. With the effort of twenty-five wrestlers, the Titans brought home their second team 1st place trophy of the season. The Titans had several champions which included Owen Johnson, Kendrick Staab, Cade Kunkel, Cinch Beck, Collin Leach, Zach Held, and Beau Zoucha. Caylee Kunkel, Milo Gehring, Jack Fritton, Rocco Gehring, Jaxson Jones, Jack Reeg, and Jayden Schroder all placed second. Ethan Rigsby, Owen O’Kelly, Shane Smith, Sage Beck, Elliot Leach, Jed Jones, Isaac Booth, and Tucker Alexander all placed third. Lastly, Brock Smith, Nathan Leach, and Nathan Held all placed fourth. Club Wrestling By: Ezra Turpitt

The club wrestling team wrestles well again bringing home their third trophy this season. A few of team members competed at the Clarks duals. The team placed 2nd out of six teams. Eleven wrestlers competed at USA State in Grand Island. Zach Held and Rocco Gehring both earn medals.

Club Wrestling at State Huskerland By: Austin Strain

On Sunday, March 26th Twin River’s Club Wrestling competed at State Huskerland in Kearney. Nine students represented the team. While no wrestlers received first place, Beau Zoucha and Mason Tenski placed second. Zach Held, Korbe Urkoski, Rocco Gehring, and Breanna Schroder placed third. Next week, the team will be traveling to Kearney again for the Midwest Classic.

Final Club Wrestling Meet for the Season The Twin River wrestling season came to an end this past weekend, the 1st and 2nd, at the Midwest Classic Nationals in Kearney. Ten athletes from Twin River participated. According to coach Majerus, “The season can be very long, but the wrestlers stayed tough throughout and I am proud of the improvements that were made.” The team will continue to work this summer at camps and be back for next year’s season. Coach Majerus would like to extend a thank you to all the coaches, parents, and athletes for a fun season . On Saturday Sienna Beck and Zach Held placed second, JLee Van Driel placed third, and Rocco Gehring placed seventh. Others that wrestled were Jed Jones, Cinch Beck, and Sage Beck. On Sunday the only wrestler to place was Tucker Alexander placing second. The other wrestlers were Jaxson Jones and Isaac Booth. Great season everyone!

Senior Spotlight

Jake Studham in the son of Dale and Jackie Gertsch. He has one sister, Jessica Ewert, and a dog named Bullet. The activities he was involved with were FFA, football, and wrestling. In his free time he enjoys working on cars. If he had $1 million he would have a mechanic shop and a lot of cars. His most inspiring teacher was Mr. Sempek because of all the advice he has given him. Jake’s most memorable moment of high school was being with all his friends. The three things he will miss most about high school are his friends, sports, and all the good times. Jake plans to attend college after high school and then find a job.

Kelsey Christensen is the daughter of Trina Christensen. She has one brother, Coltin Konwinski. The activities she was involved with were FCCLA and speech. In her free time she enjoys dancing. Her most embarrassing moment was when she was at the Lindsay speech meet and her stand fell. If Kelsey had $1 million dollars she would pay for college. Her most inspiring teacher was Mrs. Andreasen because she gives more than she has to. Her most memorable high school moment was having speech practice with the real care baby and Houdersheldt had to take care of it. The three things she will miss most about high school are the teachers, friends, and FCCLA. Her plans after high school are to attend college and be an elementary special education teacher with a focus on sign language. Sara Czarnick is the daughter of Mike and Amy Czarnick. She has two older brothers, Josh and Lucas. The activities she was involved with during high school were volleyball, basketball, track, Stu-Co, FBLA, FFA, FCCLA, band, and cheer. In her spare time, Sara enjoys playing sports and taking naps. If she had $1 million she would pay for college, then build a house, and give some to her parents. Her most memorable moment of high school was winning the long jump at state track. Her most inspiring teacher was Ms. Houdersheldt because she always has encouraging words. After graduation, Sara plans to attend college but is unsure at this time where she is going to attend. The three things she will miss most about high school are sports, some of the school lunches, and some of the teachers.

His most embarrassing moment of high school was his sophomore year when he threw a girls shot put in the district track meet. If he had $1 million he would buy a new truck. His most inspiring teacher was Mr. Stalder because he is a cool guy and made history class interesting. Preston’s most memorable high school moments were the band trip to Memphis and Boy’s State. The three things he will miss most about high school are the students, teachers, and sports. Preston plans to go to college and major in Business after he graduates high school.

Yuri Rascon is the daughter of Flor Durate and Amando Rascon. She has one sister, Deimy, and one brother, Orlando. The activities she was involved with during high school included FBLA, FCCLA, and cheerleading. In her spare time, Yuri en-joys hanging out with friends and eating ice cream. If she had $1 million she would pay off college so she wouldn’t have to work while studying and also buy her parents their own home. Her most inspiring teacher was Mrs. Andreasen because she’s pretty straight forward, comprehensive, and very funny. The three things Yuri will miss most about high school are playing UNO, not having a lot of homework, and being told what to do (it makes things easier). Her plans are to attend Northeast Community College in Norfolk.

His most embarrassing moment was his senior year during the Crofton football game when he tackled one of his own teammates. His most memorable moment of high school was after a JV football game in Norfolk when the team went to eat at USA Steak Buffet and Mr. Majerus was sitting at the table behind him with his girlfriend. He went up to him and asked, “Daddy can I have a dollar? His face turned beat red and everybody was laughing.” The three things Trenton will miss most about high school are his friends, football, and Shop classes. After graduation, Trenton plans to go to college for Diesel Ag Tech.
