Dear Friends,

The emergency shelter founded by ATASK in 1994 remains the only provider of shelter and advocacy services for Asian survivors of domestic violence in New England. Recently we asked founder Reverend Cheng Imm Tan if she thought we would be celebrating this milestone 20 years later. While she had every faith in the organization’s long-term growth and survival, we (staff, Board and community) have always harbored the hope that domestic violence shelters would become obsolete.

Challenges remain, but in this 20th anniversary year, we are celebrating ATASK’s selection as a recipient of four Federal grants from the Office of Violence Against Women. These grants demonstrate that our innovative programs in legal advocacy, transitional housing, culturally and linguistically-specific services, and engaging men in prevention are addressing barriers and making an important impact.

We are celebrating the power of philanthropy and the spirit of volunteerism in helping us get to where we want to go. This year we acknowledge the generous contributions of Hemmie Chang, Esq., who authored our organization’s bylaws and helped ATASK achieve its nonprofit status; Ted English, for providing new furniture to our shelter and transitional housing residents to support their new starts; Miyoko Naka designer specialist at Bloomingdales Chestnut Hill, who coordinated numerous fashion shows that broadened ATASK’s base of support; and Marina Dang, for sharing her own passion for ATASK’s mission with a new generation of supporters as part of the Community Leaders Council.

We are celebrating the courage of thousands of survivors and their children who have passed through our shelter and programs, and inspire us to share our talents, time, and treasure.

And as so eloquently described in Harvard Business School Professor and ATASK supporter Rosabeth Moss Kanter’s 1994 article entitled, “Collaborative Leadership,” we celebrate how the myriad ways we collaborate with each other make our challenging work much less isolating and so much more effective, energizing, and enjoyable. Working together, it is possible to address the growing demands for services and create a community in which all people have the chance to lead safe and productive lives.

Things between me and my husband had been bad for years. He tried to suffocate me with a pillow, choked me, and once pushed me down a flight of stairs.

After the accident things got worse. I thought about taking my daughter and leaving. But where would we go? My husband was very controlling and did not allow me to go to school, work, or have money of my own. I spoke very limited English. I was completely dependent on him. How could I leave? I called ATASK’s 24/7 hotline and was referred to a Chinese advocate. We spoke about the abuse, and my options, but I decided to keep our family together.

My husband, daughter and I decided to take a family trip to China to visit relatives. I flew back to the US ahead of them. I didn’t know he had other plans.

For 9 months, he kept my daughter away from me. I did not know where she was, or when I would be allowed to talk to her. He even forged divorced papers that said I gave him complete custody of our daughter. I did not know if I would ever see her again.

I was now alone in Boston, and I did not know what to do. I called the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence again, and this time I entered their emergency shelter.

The shelter provided me with a community. The other women living there were sympathetic to my situation. I was surrounded by people who understood my language and my culture.

The staff helped me with food and transportation, and taught me about finances. Most of all, the legal advocacy program helped me get a court order.

ATASK’s shelter is almost always at maximum capacity, with 20 women

and children living in 9 bedrooms, and sharing 3 baths, a kitchen and common areas. Luckily

we found a space for Meilin, so she could feel safe

and not alone.

In May 2010, my whole family — my husband, me, and our two daughters —

was in a terrible car accident. I was in the ICU for a week. Fortunately, my 2 year old daughter was not seriously injured, but my four year old passed away. To make things worse,

my husband blamed me for the accident. Somehow it was my fault that he had fallen asleep at the wheel. He said I did not pick a good car seat from the store.

Since 1994, ATASK staff have helped

thousands of women and children lead lives free of violence. Each story

is a story of courage. Each story is a story of hope. This is Meilin’s story.

I took that order, went back to China, and was reunited with my daughter. We returned to Boston and to the shelter.

ATASK helped me get back on my feet. We found childcare for my daughter so I could take English classes. I enrolled in a job training program and became a Certified Nursing Assistant. I found a job at a nursing home and we got an apartment in the transitional housing program. Life was hard as a single mom, but things were improving for me.

My husband and I went through a long and ugly divorce process. I got sole physical custody, and thought my troubles with my ex-husband were over. But he did not follow the visitation rules. He took me to court many times because he knew I was too scared to disagree with his demands.

In summer 2014, I found myself in the same situation I was in 4 years before. My husband had my daughter in China, and refused to return her to the United States. I called ATASK once again.

ATASK taught me to believe in myself again, and to fight for my rights. They helped me get my daughter back. For the first time in my life, I am financially independent. I know I can do it on my own. I know I can provide my daughter with a good life.

Since 1994, ATASK staff have utilized their cultural knowledge, skills, and experience in developing and designing intimate partner violence (IPV) intervention and prevention programs that resonate with immigrant and refugee communities.

From 2009 to 2013, ATASK participated in a learning collaborative with seven other organizations in the U.S. that have expertise in working with immigrant survivors.

ATASK’s Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) was evaluated by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and LTG Associates.

56 teens aged 14–18 showed change in their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors around teen dating/domestic violence to develop healthy, culturally-supported relationships.

The February 2014 Strengthening What Works Initiative to prevent IPV in immigrant and refugee communities Summary Report stated: The preliminary results from this evaluation are promising and suggest that YEP can be effective in preventing IPV and developing critical consciousness about IPV and related issues among Asian American teens.

If young people have access to knowledge and skills, they will be empowered to act against violence and IPV.
