Parish Stewardship Twenty-Seventh Sunday

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 8, 2017
Some who read the Stewardship Spotlight may have noticed that starting a couple of weeks ago my signature line at the bottom
changed (if anyone gets that far!). I am no longer chair of the stewardship committee – I am a plain member (who will continue to
write the Stewardship Spotlight). I would like to introduce Corinne Turcotte, a longstanding member of the committee and
St. Augustine parishioner, as the new stewardship committee chair. Corinne is a UF alumna with bachelor’s and master’s degrees
and a certified public accountant, now working as an audit manager. That means that she is very good with financial responsibility!
I look forward to working with her in service to the parish.
Stewardship is not all about raising money, although that is a component of it. Stewardship is about recognizing God’s many gifts to
us and then returning them to Him through His people and His Church. At St. A’s, the stewardship committee has focused on
building community and fellowship among parishioners – both students and non-students. A prime example of this is the upcoming
Oktoberfest to be held at the rectory on Friday, October 13 starting at 6:00 pm. There will be beer, bratwurst, other drinks and food,
and fun things to do. This is not a fundraising event – it is free. It is a celebration of us – the people of the parish. Please come and
bring a dessert to share. There will be children’s activities, too.
The first reading and gospel from today’s mass focus on people who abused the gift of a vineyard. It is tempting to read into these
passages a strictly historical interpretation of Jesus telling the Jews of His time that they are missing the boat by not recognizing
Him and not turning to the Father. However, in this day, we are the chosen people who have been entrusted with a vineyard. Are we
being good stewards of God’s gifts and yielding much fruit, or are we abusing and neglecting God’s gifts to us?

Alachua Habitat for Humanity and local faith partners are getting ready to start on our 6th Interfaith build this fall, and we seek your help. Interfaith build
provides an opportunity for congregations from all religions to build on their faiths, collaborate, and share their love through an Alachua Habitat for Humanity construction project. During the build process, faith partners provide volunteers, meals, and financial support to help a local family build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. A full-faith sponsorship from St. Augustine's is $6500. In addition to financial sponsorships, congregations are invited to sponsor/provide lunches at the build sites and to volunteer to help build – no experience necessary! Please make your check payable to St. Augustine Church, noting Interfaith Build in the memo. Thanks, in advance, for your participation and support!
