PASTOR’S COLUMN

FALL RAFFLE: Our annual fund raiser is back again. Tickets are now on sale in the parish office and through the reservation forms located at each entrance. If you fill out one of the reservation forms and send in your $100 per ticket, we will process your ticket and send you the ticket stub through the mail. Tickets are $100 each and the prizes to be awarded are $10,000, $2,000, and $1,000. The drawing will be Saturday, October 5, after the 5:15pm Mass. Each ticket is good for dinner the night of October 5, provided you make a reservation for the dinner upon purchasing your ticket. FUND TO REPAIR FALLEN HEADSTONES: A concerned parishioner has made a generous gift to raise up some of the fallen headstones at St. Mary’s Cemetery. The hope of this donor was that others might make donations to this fund in order to raise these stones, especially for those who have no family left to care for their graves. If you are interested in donating to this fund, please contact Fr. Tom Whitman (724-981-3232). AWNING REPAIR: Thanks to your generous gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal we were able to replace the two awnings on the west (Clepper) side of the church. If everything goes as planned the new kneelers should be arriving the week of September 9. Those were the other part of the Catholic Services Appeal. REFLECTION ON THE READINGS: This week the readings speak about humility. The first reading comes from the book of Sirach which is based on the teachings of Jesus Ben Sira who lived in the late third and early second century B.C. He was a teacher who tried to impart his wisdom about foolish and wise behavior. The section we read from today invites us to be humble in order to find fa-vor with other people. The proud and the arrogant make more enemies than friends. The second reading contrasts the way God seems to act in the Old Testament and the God that Jesus reveals through his life and ministry. The God of the Old Testament was a God to be feared. One did not even look at the face of God or you would die. The God that Jesus reveals through his words and his actions is a God who is approachable, loving, kind, and forgiving. This reading illustrates the humility of God – a God who did not want to be distant from us, but a God who was humble enough to become one of us in order to reveal the loving heart of God. The Gospel is Jesus observing people at a dinner taking the places of honor. This was typical of din-ners at this time. The one putting on the dinner would invite only people of power or riches, in order to make them look good. Jesus turns this model upside down. Jesus wants us to throw dinners for the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind – those who cannot repay our kindness. Jesus demonstrates the kind of hu-mility that will transform the world. We might think this week about the people we encounter every day who are left out of our circle of friends, or who are left out of any group. How might we find ways to invite them into our group?

HOSPITAL STAY For both Sharon and Farrell Hospi-tals: If you or a loved one become hospitalized, please call the church office at 724-981-3232 to notify us of your family name and room number so we will be able to visit and distribute Holy Communion to you or your loved one.

FIRST FRIDAY VISITS If you or a loved one are unable to attend church for health reasons or a disability, please call the church office at 724-981-3232 to be placed on our First Friday list. By signing up, the First Friday of each month a Eucharistic Minister or our priest will come to your home and distribute Holy Communion. When the priest visits he will also admin-ister the Anointing of the Sick.
