The State Government has set a target for all NSW councils to save at least 70 per cent of waste from going to landfill by 2022. “The Tweed community is currently only diverting 42 per cent with our current bin system and waste behaviours. The day of the week for collection will remain the same for each household,” Ms Stinson said. “The 3 Bin System will bring us in line with the 28 other NSW Councils that are already providing a food and garden waste organics service, including five of the seven Northern Rivers local governments - Ballina Shire, Byron Shire, Clarence Valley, Lismore City, and Richmond.” New green-lid bins - or new lids for households that already receive the green-bin service – will be delivered near the end of May, along with information on what can go in the green-lid bin. As part of the Organics service, Council will also supply a kitchen ‘caddy’ sealed container for initial storage of food scraps, a supply of compostable liners and educational information. Households that already receive a green-bin service are not likely to have any increase in fees under the 3 Bin System. Urban residents that don’t currently have a green-lid bin will have a modest increase in waste costs, which are part of the annual waste management fees paid with your rates. “However, the 3 Bin Service will bring cost benefits for the community and ratepayers because organics and recycling services are cheaper to operate than sending waste to landfill,” she said. “Landfills are getting more and more expensive to develop and operate, and can require long-term monitoring and managing to minimise environmental impacts. So it’s more important than ever to have less going to landfill, to reduce current and ongoing costs to our community.” LEFT: One of the poster designs that will appear as part of a 3 Bin System community information campaign starting in March. Work is well underway on the $1.7million project to update historic Tumbulgum Road, Murwillumbah to allow the cliff face to be stabilised, the road and footpath widened and drainage to be upgraded. Vehicles are being diverted around the worksite via Old Ferry Road and Queen Street. Heavy vehicles travelling to and from Murwillumbah CBD are encouraged to use Cane Road and Queensland Road, or Tweed Valley Way and Wollumbin Street.

A new bin service is coming to Tweed Shire to help the community divert more waste away from landfill.

The new 3 Bin System will incorporate a green-lid Organics bin which will accept all food and garden waste and is expected to save and reuse nearly 4000 tonnes of organic waste each year. It will replace the current Multi-Bin Service for urban residential properties from 1 July and is part of a Less to Landfill campaign in 2017.

“By separating and sorting our waste correctly into the new 3 Bin System, we can significantly increase how much waste we recycle and reuse, rather than the increasingly expensive process of burying it in landfill,” Council’s Director Community and Natural Resources, Tracey Stinson, said.

The State Government has set a target for all NSW councils to save at least 70 per cent of waste from going to landfill by 2022.

“The Tweed community is currently

only diverting 42 per cent with our current bin system and waste behaviours. By processing 50 per cent of the waste we currently put in our red bins and converting it into useful compost, we will get much closer to this target,” Ms Stinson said.

From 1 July, the green-lid bin will accept:

• all food scraps - fruit (including citrus), vegetables, meat, seafood, bones, dairy products, eggs, cereal, shells, pasta, coffee grinds, tea bags and takeaway scraps

• garden waste - palm fronds, lawn, clippings, garden prunings, leaves, weeds and flowers

• some paper products - tissues, food-soiled paper products such as pizza boxes, shredded newspaper and compostable products

• approved compostable linersA facility will be constructed at

Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre to process the organic waste to produce high-quality, nutrient-rich compost for use by local farmers and households.

New Organics service vital for less to landfill

Like the Multi-Bin Service it replaces, the 3 Bin System will include a red-lid bin for landfill waste and a yellow-lid bin for recyclables such as glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and paper. Rural properties and multi-unit developments with more than two units will remain on the current two-bin system, except for units already receiving a green-bin service.

“With food waste now going to the Organics service, the green-lid bin will be emptied weekly, while the red and yellow-lid bins will be collected fortnightly on alternating weeks. The day of the week for collection will remain the same for each household,” Ms Stinson said.

“The 3 Bin System will bring us in line with the 28 other NSW Councils that are already providing a food and garden waste organics service, including five of the seven Northern Rivers local governments - Ballina Shire, Byron Shire, Clarence Valley, Lismore City, and Richmond.”

New green-lid bins - or new lids for households that already receive the green-bin service – will be delivered near the end of May, along

with information on what can go in the green-lid bin.

So it’s more important than ever to have less going to landfill, to reduce current and ongoing costs to our community.”

A most excellent visitorA visit to the Margaret Olley Art Centre is an experience every Australian should have at some time in their life, according to the Queensland Governor, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC.

Mr de Jersey and his wife Kaye received a guided tour of the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre (MOAC) on Friday, a visit they had been planning for a number of years.

“I have been a follower of her work for many years and we have two wonderful Olley paintings hanging in Government House,” he said.

Mr de Jersey had official duties in Coolangatta last Friday and took the opportunity to duck over the border and visit the Gallery.

“We have been wanting to come since the Margaret Olley Art Centre opened,” he said.

Mr and Mrs de Jersey are friends of Margaret Olley Art Trust member Philip Bacon AM, who was instrumental in overseeing the $1 million bequest by Margaret Olley AC to establish MOAC at Tweed Regional Gallery.

“It’s just marvellous,” Mr de Jersey said after their tour of MOAC.“It captures a moment in time and it’s something all Australians

should experience. And I can’t get over the beauty of the Gallery’s setting.”

A youth hub on the Tweed Coast is set for expansion, with concept designs to upgrade Les Burger Fields in Cabarita Beach now on display for public comment.

The plans include construction of a multi-function half basketball court area, as well as additional seating and landscaping, to accompany the existing skate park.

“The new facilities will ensure the Les Burger Fields youth recreation space caters to a wide range of users, including families with young children,” Council’s Director of Community and Natural Resources, Tracey Stinson, said.

“An expansion of the youth space is also needed to cater for the Tweed Coast’s growing population.

“Les Burger Fields is an important recreational facility, because it is centrally located on the Tweed Coast between Kingscliff and Pottsville. So Council is keen to hear what locals think about the upgrade concept plans.”

Visit yoursaytweed.com.au/LesBurger or www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/ParksAndGardens for more information or to provide feedback.

The upgrade and expansion follows on from recommendations in Council’s Youth Strategy and Action Plan adopted in 2013.

Since late 2015, Council officers have been meeting with representatives from a range of groups, including Tweed Coast Raiders Junior Rugby League Sport Club, Cabarita Bogangar Residents Association, Cabarita Youth Service, and the Lions Club of Cabarita Beach and Pottsville Beach to develop the concept plans. The plans will be open for public comment until 31 March.

“The skate park and other existing facilities at Les Burger Field are well utilised and these improvements will make it even more of a focal point for young people and their families,” Ms Stinson said.

Women’s Day celebration on holdInternational Women’s Day celebrations at Tweed Regional Museum have been postponed because their guest speaker, Margot Anthony, is no longer available on the advertised date.

Mrs Anthony was due to speak at Tweed Regional Museum Murwillumbah on 8 March, to share her recollections of her life-long association with the Tweed. Big response to ‘Living and Loving the Tweed’The formal exhibition period for Council’s Draft Community Strategic Plan 2017-2027 has closed with hundreds of local residents from across the Tweed taking the opportunity to have their say.

Council’s Director of Corporate Services Liz Collyer said there has been a significant response from the community to the plan’s theme of ‘Living and Loving the Tweed’.

“This process really demonstrates that Tweed people are passionate about their community and want to have a say in its future direction,” she said.

“In recent weeks, Council’s Community Engagement Network team has been out and about at markets, shopping centres and community events across the shire, with more than 300 community members taking the time to join the conversation. It’s been really positive to have our elected Council representatives joining staff at many of the Community Engagement Network events.

“We’ve also made presentations and ran information sessions for a range of ratepayer associations, community groups and business chambers.

“Feedback from almost 1700 responses to a Council survey also contributed to the plan, as well as several dozen formal written submissions.”

The submissions and feedback will be incorporated into the final version of the Community Strategic Plan which will be presented to Council at the end of March, accompanied by a Delivery Program which outlines how to achieve the plan’s broader visions.
