Some years after Vegware began I learned that we were a ‘born global’ business. Not having ever stopped to learn much about the world of business this was a new concept to me. But we certainly fit the definition as ‘a business organisation that, from inception, seeks to derive significant competitive advantage from the use of resources and the sale of outputs in multiple countries’.

Right from the outset we’ve looked beyond the UK to find our materials as well as our markets - though the nature of our product means that we can’t just operate over the internet, we need local presence with people and product.

It’s certainly been an exciting journey so far. We’ve developed an amazing network of clients, stakeholders and partners that starts by the Union Canal in Edinburgh and spreads out through the warehouse near London through Europe to Dubai, Hong Kong, Taiwan, North America, South Africa, and Australasia. Conversations in my day span from the coffee shop on the corner to waste hauliers in Western Australia – which brings home to me that we’re part of a truly global solution.

Our mission...

Vegware has operational bases in the UK, USA, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, UAE and Hong Kong, with distribution throughout Europe and North America.

It is our goal to become the world’s best known brand of environmental foodservice packaging, and be part of the transition to zero to landfill within a foodservice environment.

Data used in this report relating to Vegware’s quality and environmental performance is based on records contained in the company’s quality and environmental management system which is certified to ISO 9001

and ISO 14001.

UK’s 29th fastest growing firm! That’s right! With 919% growth over the last 5 years, Deloitte has listed us in the UK Fast 50 for the 2nd year running. And we’re the 183rd fastest growing firm in the whole of Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

All this growth means more people. From just two in 2009, our UK team has now just passed the 50 mark – which means we are now officially a medium-sized enterprise!

NEW - Gourmet range

We’re very excited about this! Meet the market’s first eco spill-proof window box – for hot or cold food to go. This uniquepatented range of bagasse bases with matching lids is exclusive to Vegware.

The base is made from recycled sugarcane fibre, which has 99% less embodied carbon than polystyrene and it’s suitable for the microwave or freezer. The lid has an anti-mist clear window made from plant-based PLA, which has 72% less carbon than plastic film. The whole thing is completely compostable, as you’d expect with Vegware.

New carbon saving data

Switching to Vegware offers real environmental benefits, which our Eco Audits quantify by the kilo. Working with an independent carbon consultancy, we can quantify the reduction in embodied carbon in our plant materials compared to conventional packaging materials.

Our new figures reveal huge carbon savings for our renewable materials over carbon-intensive plastics. For example, the latest data reveals that the plant-based PLA we use has 72% less embodied carbon than the plastic lining in conventional coffee cups. See all our latest carbon data on page 12.

Vegware has over 50 awards!

Every award win builds vital trust in our brand, and we are extremely proud that Vegware has now been chosen over 50 times by independent judges. Every year, Vegware wins awards for sustainability and innovation, including being named the UK’s best business by the FSB, or meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

In 2014, most of our 12 awards recognised our overall business success and growth. We are also now being recognised beyond the UK, as Innovative Exporter of the Year and representing the UK in the EU’s European Business Awards for the Environment.

We’re ISO accredited!

Vegware have received our ISO 14001 and 9001 certification for quality and environmental management systems.

Paul Adderley of Sustainable Opportunity Solutions helped us to achieve our new certification Here’s what he had to say: “I can report that the business systems of this rapidly growing company are in fine form to keep pace with the demands of their expanding market share in Europe and beyond.”

Big eco benefits

Compostable packaging is made from plants, not plastic. Why use up finite resources? Trees, corn and sugarcane are renewable natural materials.

Plant-based eco materials have less embodied carbon than plastic. And Vegware’s free Eco Audits count your savings by the kilo!

We save virgin materials by using recycled card and paper. Bagasse is made of recycled sugarcane fibre.

Vegware only uses virgin card or paper from a responsible forestry source.

Vegware believes it’s important to quantify the environmental benefits of switching to eco packaging.

saving carbonwith packaging made from plants

Vegware provides free tailored audits over any period for any order quantity, quantifying the environmental benefit of switching to eco packaging with three figures:

• carbon saved – verified carbon data, calculated by product and component material• virgin material saved – kilos of recycled content in this order• potential landfill diversion – the amount of renewable packaging which Vegware can help clients divert from

landfill with its Food Waste Network initiative www.foodwastenetwork.org.uk

Q: Tell us about the Emirati appetite for eco friendly products…

A: Although becoming more environmentally friendly seems to be a relatively new concept over in the UAE, I definitely found that even in my short time there that this seems to be rapidly changing and people are starting to make steps towards increasing sustainability.

For example, in my time over there the residence I stayed in received their first ever recycling bins and I attended the UAE’s first sustainability event for the hotels and hospitality industry.

Eco-friendly packaging is still a very new idea being introduced to the region and it was really fantastic to be there first hand to see how excited people were about our products and how they can help the environment.

Q: How popular is Vegware over in the UAE?

A: Vegware was really well received in the UAE. People really loved the fact that they could make a real difference to their environmental impact simply by choosing Vegware packaging, and they loved our positive and energetic approach to customer support!

Q: What’s your most memorable moment from your time in Dubai?

A: Oooft - that’s a tricky one. As I was only based with the Horeca team for 6 months I tried to make every day memorable! I think one of my favourite days however was a cooking competition that Horeca arranged for its staff.

Everyone was split into teams, and then were let loose in a huge commercial kitchen to create the best meals we could using Horeca food. It was the first time I’d really got to see my new colleagues out of their normal working roles and we had lots of fun and giggles. And it may have helped that my team won!

Q: Which Vegware products were the Emiratis most excited about?

A: Our compostable CPLA cutlery - they thought it was fantastic! People would just not believe that this sturdy, great looking product was made from plants, not plastic. Luckily we had the certification to prove it!

Recycle - it’s the law!

Ban of biodegradable waste from landfill

Map Key

Food waste recycling mandated or introduced

San Francisco, US2009: Mandatory Recycling & Composting Ordinance.Requires residents & businesses to keep recyclables & compostables out of their landfill bin in order to help them achieve its goal of zero waste by 2020.

Seattle, US2014: Residents must separate food waste from trash or pay a $1 fine for each violation.

Vancouver, CanadaJanuary 2015: Organics Disposal Ban - biodegradable waste including food banned from waste facilities. If a waste load contains excessive recyclable materials, the hauler pays a 50% surcharge.

Austin, Texas, USThe City of Austin has committed to a Zero Waste goal to divert 90% of materials from landfills by 2040.14,000 households already have curbside organics collections as part of a pilot programme.

ScotlandJan 2013: Waste RegulationsAny business producing over 5kg food waste per week must introduce separate food waste recycling.

New York, US2012: pilot programme collecting food waste from NYC schools, residences & institutions.2013: New York City Council passed legislation requiring businesses creating >1 tonne of food waste a week to introduce food waste recycling.

Coffee nationAustralians love coffee. Not surprising - they drink 1.3 million cups of takeaway coffee every day!

Massachusetts, USJuly 2014: Law passed mandating food waste recycling for all businesses producing >1 tonne of food waste per week. Rhode Island, US

By 2016: Institutions producing >2 tonnes of food waste a week will be required to introduce separate food waste recycling.

Why recycle food waste? Here’s why food waste should be recycled, not sent to landfill...

Northern IrelandBy April 2015: separately collected food waste banned from landfill.By 2017: all businesses producing >5kg food waste per week must introduce separate food waste recycling.

Connecticut & Vermont, US2014: Large commercial waste generators (>104 tonnes/year) must divert food waste if they are within 20 miles of a licensed food waste recycling facility.

Beat new legislation New laws around the world are banning biodegradable waste from landfill and mandating food waste recycling.

Save money In the UK and elsewhere, landfill is the most expensive destination for waste. Landfill tax increasing every year, and as sites fill up.

Reduce greenhouse gases Breaking down in landfill, biodegradable waste can produce methane - a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than CO2

Produce energy & compost Food waste can be used to produce energy, heat, biofuel and compost in order to return nutrients to the soil.

Go zero waste Once messy food waste is in its own bin, the rest of your waste dry and much easier recycle. Food waste recycling is first key step to going zero waste.

Join the global movement - maximise recycling and reduce waste to landfill!

• Position volunteers at each recycling station• Use them to direct the public to the right bin• Provide litter pickers so anything that goes in the wrong bin can be

moved into the correct bin• The key is to get as little contamination as possible!

• Gather feedback from everyone who interacted with your waste system – key event organisers, volunteers, traders, punters

• Whilst it’s fresh in your mind, document what went well and what could have been improved - this can be used to inform your next event

• Obtain waste data from your contractor – how close to zero waste did you get?

• Share your experiences with others to be a part of the events sector’s journey to zero waste

go zero waste

Since January 2014, The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 require all businesses, regardless of their size or location to recycle these 5 key waste streams: glass, paper, cardboard, plastics, metal.

Businesses involved in the processing, distribution, preparation or sale of food will also have to recycle their food waste. This includes restaurants, cafés, food courts, canteens, hotels, public houses serving food, shops and supermarkets selling food, school and college canteens, nursing homes, hospitals and prisons.

New Year’s RevelationInsights from Edinburgh food businesses in their journey to comply with Scotland’s new waste Regs

Conclusions

Our report concludes that far from being the cost burden many businesses fear, the Scottish Waste Regs can bring savings for food businesses. Although greater segregation may introduce challenges such as managing space issues, there are solutions to these barriers.

Further insights

Our study also made these discoveries:

1. Biggest savings come from reducing general waste collections

2. Switching from a macerator to food waste collections may seem to increase costs but will

reduce energy and water use and maintenance costs

3. Regs likely to be cost neutral for businesses already with high recycling rates

4. Even businesses with initial cost increases can see savings once new recycling systems are in place

5. Businesses who pre-pay for bags may have extra up-front costs but will save over time

6. Grocers shops and supermarkets face higher collection costs for packaged food

Switching to Vegware’s eco disposables has not only helped Cornwall’s Penair School achieve the Eco Schools Green Flag Award, it has also served as a great educational tool to teach UK students about sustainability!

Compostable packaging heats Eco School and reduces waste costs

“We needed a compostable takeaway system as an essential component of our Food Waste to Energy system and the Vegware products look great, and they compost well in the biodigester.” Guy Chappell, Director of Business at Penair School

Before Penair School switched to Vegware, all their used catering disposables were going to landfill, and they had a waste collection bill of £11,000 a year. With over 1,200 staff and students, and a canteen that can only seat 250 at a time, this secondary school needed to offer a takeaway service to ensure everyone could have a hot meal if they wanted it. However, this created a lot of waste and the school were also finding litter to be a big problem.

Keen to find an eco alternative to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill and improve the unsightly litter problem, Penair decided composting on a large scale would be the solution, and introduced a large biodigester on site to convert all food waste into compost. Switching to Vegware’s completely compostable packaging meant used containers could be simply disposed of together with food waste and composted in their biodigester in just 48 hours.

Penair now have a complete Food Waste to Energy process in place. The compost they produce is used not only in their greenhouses, but also burnt in their biomass boiler, heating the school and their hot water – significantly reducing their heating’s C02 emissions.

“Vegware’s products are high quality, fit for purpose and attractive, and their customer service has been excellent.

We are delighted we switched to using Vegware’s eco packaging. We have been awarded the Eco Schools Green Flag (the highest award) and are working towards our Food for Life Gold Award, both of which have benefitted from using Vegware products to support our sustainability efforts.”

Vegware’s eco packaging has also given Penair a great educational tool to help teach students about the importance of waste management. Pupils from all year groups have visited the on-site biodigester to learn about the composting process and the Year 9 students went on to create a series of posters to persuade staff and students to use the recycling bins properly and learn how to separate their waste.

The students even made a video about their project - it’s one of our favourites on www.youtube.com/vegware

“Vegware is an integral part of our sustainability story.”

case study

NHS Trust reduces catering waste costs by 70%Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s catering services have found compostable disposables to be the key to boosting sustainability and recycling without increasing costs.

In 2010, Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s catering unit switched from conventional packaging to a wide variety of Vegware’s compostable disposables, including hot cups and lids, cold cups for drinks and desserts, napkins, cutlery, takeaway boxes and sandwich bags.

Where used disposables had previously gone to general waste, compostable packaging opened the door to improved recycling.

Now food waste and compostable disposables are collected twice weekly and taken to a local waste facility to be organically recycled into compost within six weeks.

Steven Fall, RBH’s sustainability officer says, “The use of Vegware products has allowed the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals Trust to significantly decrease our impact on the environment by switching to compostable catering containers and packaging.

The catering department has demonstrated that this transition was cost neutral, and in fact the Trust is now saving money on waste disposal via the introduction of a food waste stream.

This waste is recycled by a local company into energy, and agricultural fertiliser, which goes towards producing more food!”

“I would recommend Vegware to other companies & NHS Trusts; the service has been excellent and the products are great!”

Wider recognition

“By switching to Vegware products we have increased our commitment to sustainability within the Trust, and I think it is important that other NHS Trusts consider this switch too.”

Steven Fall, Sustainability Officer

Bournemouth’s achievements in waste management were recognised by the Footprint Awards 2012 and were also the subject of The Telegraph’s video case study on sustainability now being affordable – view it online: http://goo.gl/PCI5J1

Keen to build on their achievements, RBH are aiming for a bronze Food for Life Award in 2014.

“Vegware to date have been very efficient to work with. Their products are very good quality and meet all our needs. The products are very practical and they stand out from any others due to their quality and the branding, which I really like.

They also stack up well on costs against their competitors with many products being of similar cost, or even cheaper!”

Andy Whittingham

Head of Catering Operations

The Trust no longer sends any waste to landfill for financial and environmental reasons. RBH has discovered that in 2013 its catering waste stream cost over 70% less than its general waste stream, which goes to energy from waste.

Furthermore, with food waste separated out from ‘general’ waste, recycling other waste types has become much easier.

Steven Fall reports that, “By converting to compostable containers the internal management of waste has been simplified for staff – also saving time and effort.”

Vegware invests in R&D and has brought many eco firsts to market, including this original glassine bag - the first completely compostable window bag for hot cabinets.

Our other innovations include the first ever completely compostable hot cup lid, double wall cup, high-heat cutlery and compostable and recyclable sugar sticks. Our gourmet range is the market’s first spill-proof window box – for hot or cold food to go.
