DOCUMENTA

Learning From Athens The documenta is widely seen as the world’s most important exhibition of contemporary art. It took place for the first time in Kassel in 1955 – as a symbol of a new beginning in a western German city scarred by war. For the 14th edition of the documenta, artistic director Adam Szymczyk is consciously focusing attention on a current European flashpoint, a city coping with both an economic and a refugee crisis: Athens. Szymczyk’s motto is: Learn from Athens! This year’s art spectacle opens on 8 April in the Greek capital, before continuing in Kassel from June. For some time already, opinions have been divided over the idea of locating part of the documenta in Athens. And while curators and artists hope it will energize the local arts scene, others sense cultural imperialism. Former Greek finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, called it a "gimmick" to exploit the tragedy in Greece - like "rich Americans taking a tour in a poor African country." Can the beleaguered city of Athens be more than a picturesque setting for the international art elite? What can the wealthier north learn from a city fighting for its survival? What happens when the art train moves on after 100 days? And what purpose can art serve in times of crisis? The documentary Learning From Athens – documenta 14 takes a look behind the scenes of the mammoth show and gauges the mood in the crisis-hit city of Athens.

Tashi and the Monk High in the Indian Himalayas, a Buddhist monk dedicates himself to giving orphans and neglected children a better life. Lobsang Phuntsok set up an orphanage with a poetic name –

“Garden of Love and Empathy.” For the few children who are accepted there, the orphanage offers the chance of a better future in a region with few perspectives. When Tashi moves in however, a girl who has been neglected by her alcoholic father, the peace is shattered. The five-year-old, whose mother died, is deeply traumatized – a wild child prone to explosive outbursts of rage. The girl presents Phuntsok with a serious challenge. Will he manage to integrate Tashi into the community? DW broadcasts the documentary Tashi and the Monk.

IN GOOD SHAPE

How Healthy is “Gluten-Free”? The “gluten-free” trend came to Europe from the US. In the United States, healthy eating means cutting out gluten. This although most people don’t really know much about gluten. The word gluten describes proteins that occur naturally in the grains of a variety of cere-als. The manufacturers of numerous special products have exploited the fact that there are people who can’t tolerate gluten – medically verified, or as yet undiagnosed – and the gluten-free food business is now very lucrative. But in contrast to the rare autoimmune co-eliac disease, in which gluten causes an inflammation of the mucous membranes, a gluten intolerance cannot be clearly diagnosed. To date, avoiding it has been the only way to find out. Patients with flatulence or other intestinal complaints without any obvious cause, often cleared up the symptoms after a few dietary changes. But to this day, experts cannot agree on whether gluten really is the culprit, or whether the problems are being caused by other proteins in grains. What is gluten intolerance all about? And what considerations are there in relation to coeliac disease? In Good Shape explains.

MADE IN GERMANY

Women 4.0 At the international women’s conference in Berlin (24 to 26 April) one issue promises to be a key focal point of the meeting: In the digital sector, senior management posi-tions are usually occupied by men. And this although the branch likes to praise itself for shaking up gender roles through digital transformation. Even in the younger start-up sector, there are few female executives and they lag behind their male colleagues in almost all areas of the digital industry. Made in Germany wonders: What’s the gender equality situation in Industry 4.0?

Megabusiness YouTube The VidCon is regarded as the largest inter-national convention on online videos. In 2017, it’s taking place in Europe for the first time. Makers and fans of video channels are meeting in Amsterdam to exchange ideas and do some serious networking. A special edition of Shift is also dedicated to the online video business and the battle for the hard currency “views.” The maga-zine meets successful YouTubers as well as innovative format developers and poses the question: How will we consume infor-mation and entertainment in the future?
