RUTA 1 / ROUTE 1
Observable birds: Golden Eagles, Griffon Vulture, Tawny Own, Great Tit.

This lineal route is one of the best itineraries to combine culture and nature. The route’s starting point is historical Puente del Perdón (Bridge of Forgiveness). From this point we can see the Royal Monastry of Nuestra Señora Santa María de El Paular, which has been declared National Historic-Artistic Monument.
From that point we take the Vereda del Camino de Madrid and we go deep into a forest of scots pines which will lead us to the spot that names the route: the Cascada del Purgatorio, two waterfalls of Aguilón river, in the middle of Guadarrama mountain range and within the Special Bird Protection Zone (Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves - ZEPA) of Alto Lozoya. This ZEPA spreads along 7,869 hectares and holds the biggest nesting population of cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus) in Madrid’s community. Through the route you will witness their amazing flight over the tall mountains.

RUTA 2 / ROUTE 2
This itinerary goes through several livestock routes and it takes us deep into history. We will walk along ash groves and travel from the 18th century (San Ildefonso church) to Roman times (Roman Lodge).

In this site we will find the ruins of Roman Lodge which served as shelter and resting place for those who were going through the most complex section of Route XXIV. Please visit Collado Mediano’s Roman Lodge interpretation centre in order to understand the lodge’s history a bit better.
And while we walk on this route, we will very likely watch red kites (Milvus milvus). This bird is an medium-sized raptor of reddish chestnut colour, fork-shaped tail and a very nimble flight that is characterized by very visible white stripes on the back of their long and bent wings.

RUTA 3 / ROUTE 3

This route goes partly along Santillana’s reservoir, parallel to the M-601. It is one of the itineraries where we can watch the greatest amount of birds, mainly in winter and during the birds’ migration.
It is likely that we will find black-headed gulls, lesser black-backed gulls and common sandpipers. Other species also live here such as the eurasian teal, the northern pintail, the great crested grebe or the white stork.
Nevertheless, the most outstanding spot in our route it’s the beginning; Manzanares Castle, which is the best-preserved and most impressive castle in Madrid’s Community. In 1931 the castle was declared Site of Cultural Interest and it is a wonderful example of medieval architecture.

Vast cereal plains cross the route (8,5 kms) between both villages, which are connected by various cattle trails and many other agricultural roads.
We are in the middle of ZEPA (Special Protection Area) Estepas cerealistas de los ríos Jarama y Henares (Cereal Steppes of the Jarama and Henares rivers) declared as such due to the important community of steppe birds inhabiting these rainfed crop fields. Due to the faunal importance of the area, as indicated by the signposting, you must avoid leaving the roads and disturbing the birds.

This route is circular and difficult due to the slope that needs to be covered. Nevertheless, it is a privileged location for observing forest birds and birds typical of mountain heights thanks to the moors that we will find along the way.
The starting and finishing point is the train station. The itinerary partly goes along the Vereda de la Cruz Verde and shows us the area’s key livestock tradition and its farming architecture. Navalespino basins, livestock crush and forge are good examples of this.

Torrejón de Velasco Castle is our starting point and also the ideal spot to watch the route’s ornithological star: the lesser kestrel. 50 pairs of this small size hawk live here.
Once we have reached our main objective, we can start walking towards the Vereda de Valdemoro, which will lead us to Guatén stream basin and the Galiana Royal Glen.

The Moors of Pozuelo del Rey, located at the Eeast of Madrid, are the ideal place to watch raptor and steppeland birds such as montagu’s harriers.
The scarce vegetation is made of typical dry farming species, such as shrubs and aromatic plants, and a few holm oaks. A couple of artistic heritage sites, such as Santo Domingo de Silos church, located at the end of our itinerary, add value to the route.
And since this is a circular route, when we come back we can enjoy the local gastronomy and visit an
ecological winery without leaving Pozuelo del Rey.
